I need to get ready for Monday, but since jaunte posted this tweet downstairs I thought I’d repost it here along with a Google Images search that’ll give you scores of photos of Muslims in America and all over the world uniting & praying against Da’esh, for next time some wingnut tells you Muslims never reject terrorism. Yes, more needs to be done besides praying (tie your camel!), but it’s B.S. that we’re silent on the matter:

Google Images search results: muslims against ISIS pray

G’nite, lizards.

Looks like the racist far right Nationalist Front is capitalizing on the Paris attacks, sigh.

France’s far-right Front National (FN) party has emerged as the leader in regional elections in the wake of brutal attacks in the capital, Paris, three weeks ago.

Capitalizing on a sense of outrage over the attacks, which left 130 dead in the worst attack on French soil since the Second World War, and anti-immigrant sentiment, party leader Marine Le Pen said that the results indicated that the FN was now “the first party of France,” according to CNN affiliate France 2.

Lots of people in France are angry and scared. Le Pen is promising them security and revenge. It a powerful combination.

And yes, I know how wrong she is. This post is analysis, not approval.

From an old thread.

re: #149 Eclectic Cyborg

Hey Teleskiguy,

Have you skiied Squaw Valley or Whistler, BC?

I’ve never been to the Pacific Northwest or Western Canada and I’ve always wanted to go. If I do it I’m definitely going to make it like a three week journey and write a book about my experiences.

I’ve never skied those places.

Squaw Valley is where the Game of GNAR was invented. Squaw is known for producing some of the most brave and daring skiers in the world because of its vertical relief. Whistler is the largest ski area in North America with a mile of vertical. With that much relief, it sometimes can be snowing at the top and raining at the bottom.

Like I said, I’ve never skied at those places. But I know about them. Us skiers are a close-knit community and are always giving each other updates.

Dark_Falcon  Dec 6, 2015 • 10:03:01pm

re: #11 Dark_Falcon

Another thing worth noting is that regional elections mean somewhat less in France than they do in North America, because local authorities have less overall power there.

Unplug it. Take out the battery. Wait a few minutes. Reinsert the battery, and see if it will boot up. My old Lenovo laptop had this thing of locking up. When I tried to power off, it would just get stuck in this kind of limbo, not shutting off entirely but not restarting either. Removing all power was the only cure.

34
wheat-dogghazi-mailgate  Dec 7, 2015 • 3:16:36am

Texas Death Panel Fights To Remove Coherent Patient From Life Support

Now remember, Dunn is currently uninsured. And the “patient advocate” who was helping Dunn apply for emergency Medicaid before TADA was invoked told Evelyn that getting the necessary paperwork to send in the Medicaid application should be her “number one priority- and nothing else.”

Evelyn says she argued, “My number one priority is laying down the hallway in bed number [redacted for privacy]. Why are you so on fire about this?”

The hospital employee’s response is a tell-all.

“Well, the reason I’m so concerned about this is because Methodist Hospital has to get paid, Ms. Kelly.”

So much for death panels being a ridiculous political scare tactic. The hospital’s priorities are painfully clear- their main concern is not for the patient’s life, but how they will get paid instead.

So they are upset that someone is being left to die because they have no health insurance. Hello? Do you understand now?

BIOS is the nuts and bolts of the computer, before Windows loads. You can set which drive is the boot drive, or see if the computer sees a boot drive at all, among other things

Start the computer up and hold down the F1 when you see the gateway logo come up.

BIOS is plain, all text and you will have to use the arrow and tab keys to move around. Look for BOOT (UP) menu and see which drive is listed first, second, etc.

Layer upon layer of bullshit. We warbabies grew up knowing we had heroes fighting for the Chinese before Dec 7 ‘41. Except perhaps on the West Coast, almost all Asian food was Americanized Chinese food, served from restaurants named things like “Free China”. If there was a political bent to the food, it was to emphasise it was MSG- and Chicom-free.

If the BIOS displays an error, it could be a connection problem (the drive can’t get power or there’s a data connection lost) or the file structure is hosed. The first can maybe be fixed if you can remove the drive and reseat it. If the file structure is hosed, then you’ll need a Win10 boot disk to try to repair it

If it’s under warranty, then it’s Gateway’s problem. If it’s more than a year old, then you can either try the repair yourself, and find a computer shop (or computer geek) to do it.

Failing hard drives are either shoddy drives or some other issue with the laptop itself.

Acers used to be pretty good.

Asian food? China attacked the US on December 7? What kind of misinformed asshat is Erickson to believe that claptrap? Who does he think he is? Blutarsky?

Wait, I just answered my own question. Erickson is Blutarsky.

Japan attacks the US on December 7, 1941, so his family’s response is to not eat any Asian food on the day. Except that for most Americans, the only Asian food they’d come into contact for decades wasn’t Japanese food, but Chinese food.

And China’s one of those countries that Japan invaded (and committed war crimes against for that matter). It’s only in the last few years that someone could find all manner of Asian food - from Japanese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Malaysian, etc., to say nothing of regional Chinese.

Leave it to Erickson to conflate all Asian food for purposes of being a slack-jawed yokel.

OK. When you have a chance, find a young’un who’s good with computers, or a repair shop in town. Most places have a locally owned shop that can probably fix it way faster than a chain store (BestBuy GeekSquad) or with our remote help. If you’ve got a local college or other school with a computer science department, you can ask around for a handy student.

Migrant crisis: Germany heads for 1m asylum-seekers in 2015

Germany has registered 964,574 new asylum-seekers in the first 11 months of the year, putting it on course for more than a million in 2015.

The number of migrants arriving has not slowed despite the winter cold, with a record high of 206,101 in November.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in August that the country expected 800,000 asylum-seekers over the year.

Documents leaked in October suggested the government was privately anticipating the arrival of up to 1.5m.

What astounds me is the very low level of backlash against the refugees themselves. People are pissed off at the government and politicians for railing to foresee the extent of the crisis, but have been generally welcoming to the people who have arrived.

Internment camps are all the rage… again (courtesy of Trump supporters):

Many Trump supporters are also enthusiastic about his immigration reform plan, which would include deporting millions of undocumented immigrants.

“We gathered in World War II all the Japanese and put them in camps. … It’s appropriate today to do to the Muslims, same way,” said David Brooks, 67, a former owner of a paving company. “And anybody that don’t like it, liberals can get the hell out. I’d close every mosque in this country.”

But even on Trump’s central policy issue, there are some deep-seated doubts among some of his backers.

“I think his policy on immigration might be a little bit misguided in some instances,” said Shane Jampole, 17, who said he plans to support Trump. “There’s a lot of people who have migrated to America and live in this general area. My grandpa, his parents were immigrants. It’s just the way it is. We need immigrants to keep America the melting pot that it is.”

Jampole pointed to a friend, Mohammed, as he walked by on his way into the rally. “His parents emigrated from Pakistan, and I don’t know why he’s here. I think he’s a little bit offended. But I think he’s hoping to learn.”

And its worth remembering that up through the 1930’s the Civil War was still within living memory. So there remained in Vicksburg people who had had to live through that horrible siege.

And in fact India fought as part of the British Empire and beat back a Japanese invasion in 1994, while China had been fighting Japan continuously since 1937.

Mr. Erickson’s attempt to depict himself as being from an “Old School Patriotic Family” ends with his wearing his asshat and putting other asshats upon his parents.

Geez, I was living in Japan in 1994 and totally missed this ;)

Morning. So, looks like America’s media is all upset that Obama was Obama and they didn’t get that magical transformation to Obomba The War President.

Especially Morning Joke.

5 minutes of that jerk was all I could take. But, it was 5 minutes enough to again give me the feel for the whole Republican stand on the President’s address last night.

“He doesn’t get it.” “We’ve heard all this before, we need something more.”

Here is what I think. America doesn’t get it. We heard all this before. This is a world problem created by much of the politics of that world. If all the world politicians can get together and agree the world fucked up the MIddle East part of that world and start to put plans together with the input of the Middle East nothing is going to change.

It is not Obama’s problem. It is everyone’s problem. And Obama is not going to fix this himself. Too bad everyone is blaming it all on his lack of a “new” fix. There isn’t one. We have too many old problems.

But if Joke Scarborough would like to at least know who is winning, I would suggest ISIS. And all with the help of the Republican candidates, Joke Scarborough and all those like him, Trump, etc.

Which works for siblings to some degree, unless they’re males named after their fathers, grandfathers, uncles or great-uncles. Nicky Hilton and Kim Kardashian’s sisters do very well, while the younger Hilton brothers Barron and Conrad and Rob Kardashian Jr. are all disasters cases.

The reason for the name specificity is that Caitlyn Jenner’s sons Brandon and Brody have also done quite well by their Kardashian association.

Considering that he lived in the Middle East (per his wiki) for a number of years, does he realize that not eating Asian food would extend to Indian, Middle Eastern, and even pasta/noodles? Or is he that dense to equate Asian = Japanese? Even though he probably was exposed to mostly Americanized Chinese food if he was growing up in Georgia.

Yup - the hull design dropped out of favor after the Russian-Japanese war of 1905 due to being unstable in heavy sea states. They’ve incorporated new tech to address that (though it’ll be put to the test in real world conditions).

They’ve also incorporated the angular structures for stealth purposes, including enclosing the guns to minimize radar cross sections.

Oh, and since the costs spiraled out of control, the US only gets 3 of them - at nearly $4 billion a pop (figuring development costs spread across class) - the class was originally supposed to include 32 ships, then 10, and now 3.

Coming from a Democratic administration, it’ll probably look a lot like the NOAA’s system for dangerous weather. It’ll have multiple components, and while it won’t say outright that a particular place is in danger, it’ll give probabilities for chances, and the type of danger probable. And then Republicans will complain because it also contains domestic terrorism probabilities.

Unanswered questions of those who polled in favor of this ground war.

Do you know where this ground war would occur?
1) yes,
2) no,
3) Rand Paul
4) ground war? BAH! Nuke it from orbit, just to be sure.
5) actual countries in ME and rest of world where Daesh is known to operate, including Syria, Iran, Jordan, Turkey, France, Germany, Libya, Egypt, Belgium, etc.

And speaking of Libya:

I favor an armored thrust into Belgium. We could attack through the Ardennes to outflank their defenses. Hey, it’s been done before, twice in fact.

Bastrop County Texas would also be a good venue for this type of operation, close to Fort Hood and all.

Here’s what that article said when referring to the Civil War:

Where a revolt takes the form of armed rebellion, it may not be viewed as an insurgency if a state of belligerency exists between one or more sovereign states and rebel forces. For example, during the American Civil War, the Confederate States of America was not recognized as a sovereign state, but it was recognized as a belligerent power, and thus Confederate warships were given the same rights as United States warships in foreign ports.

China’s Airpocalypse Is So Bad, It’s Banning Half the Cars in Beijing

Beijing issued its first-ever red alert on Monday. The radical measure means that half the cars in the capital must stay off the streets, outdoor construction must stop, and schools must close. The pollution is simply too dangerous.

While it should surprise no one that China’s still struggling with its smog problems, the red alert in Beijing means that not even the highest-ranking government officials can escape the stench. Red alerts are supposed to be issued when the air-quality levels rise above 300 for three consecutive days. That puts it in the “Hazardous” range on a scale that tops out at 500, and the government warns that “everyone should avoid all outdoor exertion.” So it’s very bad.

Let us not forget, that many conservatives want to get rid of the EPA. Just look at China today….if we didn’t have an EPA, this is what America would look like.

From dictionary.com

insurgent
[in-sur-juh nt]

noun
1.
a person who rises in forcible opposition to lawful authority, especially a person who engages in armed resistance to a government or to the execution of its laws; rebel.

So, that’s a good guy with a gun… we should not report such individuals because (see something/say something)…

And the only reason that we wouldn’t be calling cops is that they’ve got the right complexion.

Meanwhile, out of the past bunch of mass shootings, that’s the demographic - white male.

There is no legitimate reason to walk the streets with a rifle. Anyone doing so should be stopped by law enforcement.

1948 Donora Smog

Folks in Pittsburgh, Johnstown, Connellsville and the other steel and mining towns of western Pennsylvania were used to smog. Smog meant that the mills were running and the coke ovens burning. Smog meant men were working and families fed. Sure, it could be a nuisance. It stunted the growth of crops and trees, soiled curtains and caused asthma and hacking coughs, but that was the price of progress and prosperity.

No one was prepared for the black cloud that swallowed Donora, a Monongahela mill town, just a short drive south from markerPittsburgh, on Tuesday, October 26, 1948. By Friday, folks were crowding into local hospitals, but that didn’t stop the Halloween parade that same evening, when costumed children appeared “like shadows moving through the gloom,” or the high school football game the next day, when no passes were thrown because no one could see the ball. Seventeen people died on Saturday, and thousands were gasping for air. But the zinc works and steel mill stayed open, their stacks pouring an acrid gray smoke into the suffocating sky.

On Sunday morning the bosses at American Steel and Wire finally closed the plant. By the time fresh winds finally swept through the valley and blew away the smog on Monday, 7,000 people had become ill - nearly half the town’s population. In all, twenty would die from acute fluoride poisoning and asphyxiation. In the days that followed, state and federal investigators descended on Donora to find out what - or who - was to blame. Donora became a national “scientific test tube” for the study of air pollution.

I have a half-sister who lives on the bank of the Allegheny well inside the city limits. When we were kids it was a dead toxic sewer, bright copper green in contrast to the iron-red of the Monongehela. After decades of EPA cleanup she still has an environmental problem—the damn beavers come up the bank and girdle her birches. Bass fishing contests are run from her place down to The Point.

I read a historical account of the Donora Smog incident.
Some people headed to their basements in an attempt to escape the smog. Unfortunately, that’s where the worst of the bad stuff settled.

Now thinking go the probably apocryphal story of when an American officer met an NVA officer after the war.

American officer: You know, you never defeated us in the field.

NVA officer: That is true. It is also irrelevant.

And hence the reason why open-carry is completely stupid and completely dangerous. If someone decides to exercise their FREEDUMB and walks down the street or on to a schoolyard with an assault-style rifle, no one knows if he’s a “good guy” or “bad guy”. Open-carry only causes more problem for Law Enforcement and for the public at-large. Every time a “law-abiding” ammosexual walks on to a schoolyard, it forces a school to go on lockdown. Hell, most sheriffs in the state of Florida do not want open-carry. They know it causes more headaches than it’s worth.

Let us not forget, that many conservatives want to get rid of the EPA. Just look at China today….if we didn’t have an EPA, this is what America would look like.

I remember visiting our office on Sunset Blvd in Los Angles in the late 1970s, and the windows looked like someone flew by in a helicopter and threw mud at the windows.

The Confederate government was paralyzed by its built-in fetish for states rights.

And, with that in mind:

If the south had won, how long would it have managed to stay as the CSA? Secession would have been legitimized, individual states would have seceded from the CSA, and then the states would most likely have fragmented into a plethora of fiefdoms that would make 16th century Europe look consolidated.

The anti-secessionist language of the CSA constitution is a bit stronger than that of the US. Is it irony yet?
