Breitbart Commenters Love Trump’s Call to Ban Muslims From the US, of Course

These are Donald Trump’s supporters

Some Republican candidates are denouncing Donald Trump’s call for a total ban on Muslim immigration to the US, but let’s check out how the GOP voting base is reacting, shall we? For example, the commenters at Breitbart “News.”

Let’s face it — this is only going to make Trump more popular with the degraded right wing audience. His poll numbers are going to soar.

I’m hiding these comments by default, for reasons that will be obvious. There are already more than a thousand comments in this vein.

We don’t need them…they do not contribute to Science, Medicine, Computers, or Mathematics. Their last contribution to those disciplines was over 800 years ago. Evidence you ask?
Check to see how many Muslims have on the Nobel peace for those fields. Oriana Fallaci says they are parasitic in nature and take from a country’s bounty, and do not give back.

I’d like to know where the fuck we go from here.

Are there enough sane people left in this country to stop this? I’m beginning to fear that enough people have abandoned their sanity to actually let this country turn into exactly what we’ve always fought against.

Thanks, Republicans. Thanks a fucking ton.

Well, let’s see. I’m fine if we’re all agreeing this will drive Trump’s polling upward. But his share of the polls won’t go up to 100% tomorrow, or next week or whatever. They won’t go up to 70%. I don’t think they’ll go up to 30%.

What’s the number at which point I am allowed to look at this as a self-radicalizing spiral among the True Believers, rather than the very real and certain doom of democracy in this country?

This is an honest question. I am amazed at how fast we’ve all decided that this is definitely actually certainly the end. Sure, I’m scared shitless right now as much as the next guy, but “scared” isn’t the same as “I’m certain doom is upon us”.

I’m just going to leave this quote here, because it’s still too goddamn depressingly relevant:

The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices — to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill — and suspicion can destroy — and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own — for the children — and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is — that these things cannot be confined — to the Twilight Zone.

18
D_Red  Dec 7, 2015 • 3:10:09pm

“Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses”

I dunno, shitlord, maybe start by looking at the polling data?

To wit: if one is unwilling to suggest a number that indicates that Trump’s support has swelled as far as it can realistically go, then that carries with it a need to admit that one is not thinking rationally about this topic.

You don’t have to be confident you have figured out the correct number a priori, but you need to believe the number exists.

I don’t think this is certain doom. Getting down to brass tacks, the most relevant questions are whether or not Trump can win the GOP nomination and if nominated, could he win the general.

IMO, Trump wins the GOP primary and loses in the general by a depressingly small margin.

One thing I have noticed is that a big chunk of Trump’s support seems to be coming from boomers, but the generation previous seems under-represented. With this steady march to fascism, I wonder how Roger Ailes (b. 1940) and Rupert Murdoch (b. 1931) feel about watching this monster they’ve helped create. They’ve seen a bit more closely than later generations what can result from this.

It would be ironic enough to throw me into a giggling fit if the future of our moderate democracy rested on Ailes and Murdoch throwing marching orders to Fox News to tear down a whackdoodle on the far right.

Something to keep in mind is that we may have already passed peak Trump. The latest poll in Iowa shows Cruz blowing past Trump into first, and Rubio nearly catching Trump for second, while Carson continues to fade. It may be that now that we are just a few weeks from Iowa, voters are starting to get serious.

Good points, Testy.

But what makes me nervous is that a lot of people I’ve known for years - not just a couple, but a lot - are signing on to this shit. Real ‘live and let live’ types are mouthing Trump talking points like ‘we have to take care of our own’ and how they’re ‘sick of being PC.’

If it was the usual idiot 27% saying this stuff I’d be laughing my ass off. But it’s not, and this shit just isn’t funny any more.

I just hope they give me enough lead time to gather up my shit and expatriate if they’re gonna go down that road, because I refuse to go with them, and sooner. that will make me one of ‘them.’

He has some weird rationalizations for it, of course, which I didn’t bother to read because I smelled bullshit a mile away.

But Chuck’s post just confirms that Twitter was absolutely right to throw Zimmerman out. If he thought he was helping Zimmerman, Chuck is a damn fool. But I guess we already knew that.

Yes, although I’m not sure that was all that calculated. I’ve noticed that Trump frequently says something only garden-variety crazy, then doubles and triples down on it until it’s entirely outside what I used to think was within the spectrum of US political discourse. I don’t know if he’s got the world’s strangest circle of advisors or if he just treats any questioning of his ideas as ATTACK ON YUUUUUGE GREATNESS, but this could just be another step in his own self-radicalization stemming from the San Bernardino fallout.

One wonders if there will be more steps beyond this one in the coming days.

Another good one from HL Mencken:

As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I think it safe to say this prophecy was fulfilled in 2000 and 2004.

This total lack of endorsements probably has no basis in ideology. To the GOP establishment, Trump is simply an obnoxious outsider who hasn’t paid his dues. So in primary season he won’t get any support/endorsements from that segment of the party.

However, if he ends up winning the nomination (which may come down to a bitter fight at the convention), the GOP establishment will most likely fall in line. After all, if it comes down to a choice between voting for a fascist on the GOP ticket, abstaining, or voting for the Democrat, we all know what GOPers will do.

With respect, I think you’re over-forcing the comparison. There’s no way on Earth the GOP will eventually fall in line behind Trump because they think they can control him.

Sure, there are similarities. Lots of them. Staggering, horrifying numbers of them. There are also major and critical differences.

Trump still hasn’t an average of 30% among Republicans. It’s not time to panic. Just make plans to do something unusually strenuous during the 2016 campaign.

The office-holding wing of the GOP (I try not to use the word Establishment because of how amorphous it is) has nothing to counter him with. No proposals to help the downwardly mobile white people that make up most of the party’s voting strength. Their endorsements have had little or no effect on the campaign. Their ads were money wasted.

The Simpsons had a line that summarizes their position: “We’ve tried nothing and we’re out of ideas.”

re: #49 Testy Toad T

I’m nervous as shit, and it stopped being funny a long time ago. 100% cosigned.

If the GOP can’t gain some control of this situation and Trump wins the nomination, I’m very worried about the outcome of the general election. Trump supporter are already showing that they’re eager to play the part of the Brownshirts and physically assault and intimidate political opponents. With our electorate so nearly divided (in no small part because of piss poor turnout), it wouldn’t take much intimidation and violence to sway the general election results and hand Trump the presidency.

I am terrified at the thought because, as paranoid as this sounds, if Trump becomes President and continues to use fear to gin up his support, it is only a matter of time before he turns that on his domestic political opponents. There might not be official purges like Stalin and the Soviet Union, but violence against Democrats and liberals by his supporters will probably be given the same *wink, wink* treatment that violence against favored targets currently gets from the GOP (Planned Parenthood for example).

I know this sounds extreme and paranoid, but even as little as 5 years ago, did you ever forsee a time when a major candidate for president could make such an announcement as today’s and be cheered for it? I know I didn’t.

“What I do is, wash it with Head and Shoulders,” Trump told Rolling Stone. “I don’t dry it, though. I let it dry by itself. It takes about an hour. Then I read papers and things.”

While his hair is air-drying, Donald watches TV for a bit and then styles it with a comb. “I also watch TV. OK, so I’ve done all that,” Trump explains. “I then comb my hair. Yes, I do use a comb.”

Trump denies his poufy hair is due to an artful comb over. “Do I comb it forward? No, I don’t comb it forward,” said Donald. “I actually don’t have a bad hairline. I mean, I get a lot of credit for comb-overs, but it’s not really a comb-over. It’s sort of a little bit forward and back. I’ve combed it the same way for years. Same thing, every time.”

Swap out Jew for Muslim in Trump’s speech, and it’d fit right in with the American Nazi Party rallies at the old Madison Square Garden.

In February 1939 Kuhn and the Bund held their largest rally in Madison Square Garden—ironically, one which marked the beginning of the end for the organization. In front of a crowd of 22,000, flanked by a massive portrait of George Washington, swastikas and Americans flags, Kuhn attacked FDR for being part of a Bolshevik-Jewish conspiracy, calling him “Frank D. Rosenfeld” and criticizing the New Deal, which Kuhn had deemed “the Jew Deal”. Three thousands members of the Ordnungsdienst, the militant arm of the Bund, were on hand and fistfights broke out in the crowd among those who had come to heckle Kuhn. After the rally, New York District Attorney Thomas Dewey arrested Kuhn on charges of larceny and forgery. He not only was convicted of these charges but he also confessed to being arrested multiple times for drunkenness, carrying on extra-marital affairs and pocketing $15,000 from the Madison Square Garden rally. After the war, Kuhn was deported to Germany; he died there unceremoniously in 1951. Following Kuhn’s arrest, the Bund slowly withered away, until its dissolution on 8 December 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the United States declared war on Germany, federal officials began to arrest Bund officials. Kuhn’s successor Gerhard Kunze was captured in Mexico and sentenced to 15 years of prison for “subversive activities”. Twenty-four other officers were convicted of conspiracy to violate the 1940 Selective Service Act and served prison time. Some other Bund leaders committed suicide before the FBI caught up with them. Although some Bund members had their naturalization revoked and some spent time in prison camps, most members were left alone after the organization was disbanded.

History doesn’t repeat. It stutters.

Very difficult conversation with a Jewish friend, who has bought well into anti Muslim fears and attitudes. Jew vs Arab old school anger. Okay is what it is. What a lovely man.

He has ripped on the media all night. They should all pull their plugs gather all the equipment and head out the door.

But they won’t. They will slurp up the ratings and ask why they do it?

And that’s what scares me the most. Not to be melodramatic (but to be very melodramatic), the foundation of our democracy is a free press—that will call things that are facts and call bullshit what it is. But we really don’t have that anymore—we have untrained reporters, non-journalist bobble-heads and the quest for ratings/money the driving force behind news organizations. They want to MBF every fucking story to maintain the horse race aspect of politics, and to titillate their audiences for ratings.

Without anyone to scream that the emperor has no clothes, we are careening to a really dangerous place.

re: #243 Great White Snark

Not really. Criminal conspiracy, most broadly defined, is “an agreement of two or more people to commit a crime, or to accomplish a legal end through illegal actions.” I don’t think you can get conspiracy from “he’s trying to take away civil rights.” Now, there may be a question as to whether his talk legally amounts to incitement under Brandenburg v. Ohio - but even then, you have to show intent, imminence, and likelihood; and I’m not sure we can get there.

This is something that has to be defeated politically and morally. We have to remember that this is not who we, as Americans, are. We are better than this, and we need to act like it.

The average person is often either ignorant, stupid, or too busy to dedicate any time to analyse the issues. Trump is pretty much “the average person” who happens to have been handed a wad of money.

What I think we’re seeing here is exposure of the rotten soul of the US Republican party —- the monster that’s been there ever since the Southern strategy made specific outreach to racists and bigots part of the GOP.

It remains to be seen if the GOP will unite behind this banner of open fascism, and if so, whether or not they will win in a general election.

Not so sure of that. Every time you’d think one of his asinine statements would end him, Trump ends up even higher in the polls than before. This time might be different, but there’s no reason to think it will be different. He’s tapped into the party’s base in a way all the others haven’t. It’s to the point where if the media reports word for word what he says, Trump says it’s an attack, and he garners even more support by playing “victim.”

Rubio is a hand puppet for PNAC. He’s made that about as clear as one could, without using the phrase “hand puppet.”

The problem is Rubio struggles to have a demanding public persona. That water gulping scene is hard to live down. That he looks young and cute may endear him to a bunch of grandmas thinking about their grandsons, but it’s not that clenched-jaw stern profile that RWR used to be able to gin up on demand.

re: #37 Charles Johnson

The commenter who wrote “Tarleton showed us how to handle this during the American revolution” is apparently referring to the Waxhaws Massacre.

Basically, he wants to murder every last Muslim in America, by imitating a British officer’s horrendous slaughter of Americans in the Revolutionary War.

Waxhaws was bad. I live only a couple hours from where that happened. The commenter is missing something, though…

We retaliated…and that was really bad too. We murdered British prisoners while yelling “Tarleton’s Quarters!” or “Buford’s Play!” and this continued in the Carolinas without respite for the rest of the war.

Also…there this nasty little incident here in NC…en.wikipedia.org

allthingsliberty.com

The encounter lasted no more than ten minutes. Samuel Eakin described it as “a total rout and slaughter.” Another North Carolina militiaman related how he and other American troops, “drawing their swords attacked the Tories and cut them down … a great slaughter was made.” Matthew Vandiver stated that the loyalists were “cut to pieces,” an assertion that William Lenoir verified was “literally” true. “I never before witnessed the works of death carried to such an extent in so short a time,” Thomas Lofton of North Carolina declared, “Pyles with his Tories being all either killed or wounded.” Captain Graham added that “some Catawba Indians … who did not overtake us until the close of the action …. were suffered to kill seven or eight wounded men with spears before they were made to desist.”[24]

…and the desecration of British dead at King’s Mountain (which two of my own ancestors possibly participated in doing). Bodies were defecated and urinated upon (particularly that of British Major Patrick Ferguson) and summary executions of British prisoners were carried out.

Tarelton’s murder of American cast a long and very bloody shadow in the petite guerre of the Carolinas, and a great many loyalists died in retaliation for what he did.

The fire will never be really extinguished. We’ve toyed with some similar movements in times past.

It’s just that Trump is too grating to too many people.

There have been discussions about America’s fascistic tendencies since the term was coined.

Hyper-nationalism is not something especially new.

I suspect our modern communications technology has allowed us to be more aware of these things in real time.

I try to push back in my tiny little circle of friends and relatives. It’s not much, but it’s what any of us can do.

Our diversity as a nation is growing (which is why the white supremacists are screaming all the louder) and I believe that will keep us from going down the dark path that Germany and Japan went down in the early 20th century.

However, what I am concerned about is that we simply let our divisions keep us from doing anything big any more. We’re like a burnt out star, still shining from the thermal emissions but no more fusion going on in the core.

We will limp through the 21st century.

This is one reason I wince when people refer to the Nazis and Hitler as ‘evil’ or ‘inhuman’, or speak of a devil. It removes Nazism and the Holocaust from the realm of ‘Things Humans Do’, and pretends that it’s not something well within the range of human behavior.

Genocide is little more than tribal warfare writ large. The Nazis were every bit as human in their actions as any group of humans who decimated any other group throughout history or prehistory. Calling it ‘inhuman’ lets the rest of us off the hook - “It can’t happen here!”, but Nazi Germany reminds us that it CAN.

The talk session after discussed that problem, since the CNN guy did argue with her. One thing that was mentioned was that the whole Magical Balance Faerie thing was no longer operating, since nobody else was doing what the Trump Campaign was doing, and that correcting his campaign lies was having the effect of reinforcing his war with the media narrative that the GOP base has been primes to love for 35 years.

I’ve been wondering for a while if overt political violence by the ultra-rightists (those hoorawing at Trump rallies, e.g.) isn’t going to be the final straw that will (to mix a metaphor) finally break the Trump fever. Cocky young assholes milling around trashtalking about “breaking heads” might make for good news filler, or shock tweets, but I can’t help but think that if heads actually start to get broken, that will be the beginning of the Trump implosion. It’s been 40+ years since we had anything like overt political violence in this country (and even then it needed a Vietnam War to spark off the passions); I wonder how the public (the real public, not the wingnut fever swamps) will react if it breaks out at The Donald’s rallies…

A few random thoughts after stepping into to the thread late:

1. The excerpt from Erickson upthread is unreal. To paraphrase: Trump put the other candidates on the defensive, and the other candidates will have to say that you must allow Muslims into the country, which is no different than saying you have to allow Mexicans into the country. I mean—holy shit. Wait, I mean HOLY SHIT. He basically said to the xenophobes—keep your eyes on the prize, all these people are brown, we can keep them all out! This is a mainstream voice of conservatism/GOP. HOL-EE SHIT.

2. Any Trump supporter or any GOP voter that doesn’t roundly criticize Trump and then professes to be a constitutionalist can FUCK RIGHT THE HELL OFF.

3. The collective boner from the media over these comments is nauseating. Do your goddamn job. Trump should be shouted and/or laughed off any public forum. A sane media would make it so that you couldn’t even mention Trump’s name in polite company.

4. Pat Buchanan must be pissed that his campaign message was apparently about 20 years to soon.

5. Seriously, how the fuck did we get here?

This is what I mean about the media boner over Trump. No dickweed, you don’t have to report on Trump as if his positions are legitimate.

re: #485 ObserverArt

This reminds me. This morning, one of the first things said on Morning Joke was them announcing Mark Halperin and John Heilemann have a show that will now be carried on MSNBC at 6 PM weeknights. I guess it is their Bloomberg TV gig or something.

Ugh. Just more of the changes.

So, Fox suspends people for saying shit and pussy—ignores all of the other hateful crap their people say. MSNBC slaps Halperin’s little hand for calling the President a dick, then gives him a nightly time slot. Maybe, in limited and specific cases, the MBF does exist. Go figure.

Any further immigration of non-Germans must be prevented. We demand that all non-Germans who have entered Germany since August 2, 1914, shall be compelled to leave the Reich immediately.

Guess who

I don’t know what this means, but according to Twitter the trending terms in the US seem to have nothing to do with Trump, or the Presidential race.

I think most Americans rather don’t care.

Which I suppose could be quite bad in some scenarios.

Saint West still trending? I know new thread, so probably safe to post this (ck dates)

Trump spokesperson Katrine Pierson tells CNN that Trump is behaving like a “war time commander.”

Nathan Bedford Forrest?

When the Nazis told the Danish Jews they had to wear the yellow stars, the Danish royal family put them on, too.

So maybe people in the USA who disapprove of Trump’s bigotry ought to wear hijab and ask their bosses to give them time off for daily prayers.

I dunno about the prayer part, but I’m willing to put on a scarf if it comes to that.

I’m considering growing out my beard and wearing a triangle with a Crescent on it. If that SOB wins the primaries, I damn sure will.

In the eyes of the theocratic nutjobs, we agnostics/atheists would be social climbers to call ourselves ‘Muslim’. Even now.

re: #486 Mike Lamb

A few random thoughts after stepping into to the thread late:
2. Any Trump supporter or any GOP voter that doesn’t roundly criticize Trump and then professes to be a constitutionalist can FUCK RIGHT THE HELL OFF.

My favorites are the ones who claim to think Trump is a nightmare, then go right on with “but seriously, Muslims and illegals are an existential threat to this country.”

Talk about wanting to have your cake and eat it, too.

re: #350 Charles Johnson

Chuck C. Johnson is bragging that he’s beating me at fundraising.

That’s OK, you are beating him at “not facing jail time” and “not being in the cross-hairs of multiple scary law firms.”
Oh, almost forgot - also beating him at “being a decent human” and “making positive contributions to the world.”
I’d say overall you come out pretty far ahead.
