Ben Carson Backs Donald Trump, Threatens to Leave the GOP

If Donald Trump achieves nothing else with his absolutely insane rhetoric, at least he’ll have torn the Republican Party apart. Now Ben Carson is also threatening to leave the GOP after reports that establishment fat cats are discussing ways to thwart Trump’s potential nomination. More popcorn, please?

Ben Carson on Friday blasted the Republican National Committee following a Washington Post report that nearly two-dozen establishment party figures were prepping for a potential brokered convention as Donald Trump continues to lead most polls.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus held a dinner in Washington, D.C., on Monday, and, according to five people who spoke with the Post, the possibility of Trump heading into the Cleveland convention with a substantial number of delegates was a topic of discussion. Some attendees suggested the establishment lay the groundwork for a floor fight that could lead the party’s mainstream wing to unite behind an alternative. Carson rejected this approach.

“If the leaders of the Republican Party want to destroy the party, they should continue to hold meetings like the one described in the Washington Post this morning,” Carson said in a statement released by his campaign.

Carson said he prays the Post’s report is incorrect and threatened to leave the GOP. “If it is correct, every voter who is standing for change must know they are being betrayed. I won’t stand for it,” said Carson, who added that if the plot is accurate, “I assure you Donald Trump won’t be the only one leaving the party.”

“If the leaders of the Republican Party want to destroy the party, they should continue to hold meetings like the one described in the Washington Post this morning,” Carson said in a statement released by his campaign.

Not to worry, Dr Carson, the Republican Party was already well on its way to destroying itself long before this.

With this many candidates and with Trump saying he’s in the race till the end, Mr. Priebus would be irresponsible not to be making plans in case of a brokered convention.

The question isn’t whether the GOP will rip itself part with the crazy - bigotry, nativism, xenophobia, racism, Islamophobia, but how everyone else can contain the crazy to keep it from doing permanent damage to the nation.

And the single best way is to vote. Treat every last election as one of major importance.

It’s not just another school board vote. It’s a vote that has consequences for years to come as where do you think most politicians start? Local elections. Every one of those local elections has lasting consequences.

Treat them accordingly.

Second, do they think Muslims will burst into flame if they say the wrong words in the wrong order?

True, OT but finally caught this week’s Fargo. Holy shit man. Cannot wait to see what the finale brings.

I get that the deux ex machina of the ufo was meant to confound, and it did, but that’s the way life is - there are some things that go unexplained.

Best line of the episode (of many). Mike Milligan on pulling up to the massacre, getting out of his car, seeing all the bodies, and going “Okay then” and getting right back in and driving away with the surviving Kitchen brother.

Watching Hanzee eviscerate the Gerhardt with the diabolical trap w/cops was delicious irony, as was fact that the cops couldn’t be bothered to listen to Lou (which would explain why he plays with such regret in season 1). Sucks that Hank got caught in all of it, though he managed to hold his own, which was more than you could say about the local police chief and his staff. Bear lived up to his name. And Floyd pretty much saw everything go up in flames around her.

Peggy got herself actualized, Ed’s still in shock, and Hanzee’s on their tail (though I don’t think he’s thinking haircut at the moment).

Sadly, I don’t know if Lou’s wife’s going to make it. That didn’t look too good.

Ah. True.

I still believe he got freaked by the Paris attacks, though.

My take on Trump is that he’s a complete bullshitter. By this I mean that I don’t know if there’s any connection between what he says, and what he believes and feels. So I don’t know if HE was freaked out by the Paris attacks, and further freaked out by the San Bernardino attack, but his BASE sure was, and he got right out in front of all the rising Islamophobia.

His modus operandi is to identify a hot button issue for the angry white people base, and to not only tell them they’re right, but propose the craziest shit that they want as an actual policy. It would not surprise me to see him proposing internment or deportation for Muslim noncitizens, the next time there’s an attack, because that’s what his base wants.

IOW, I don’t assume he means what he says, ever. He’s the ultimate con man. He says what works.

The problem with this, as we have seen in Kentucky recently, is that the people at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, those who are most affected by the cynical Social Darwinistic policies espoused by these freaks, are the least likely to vote. Because they are too damn busy scratching out a meagre living from their increasingly cruel circumstances.

They have neither the time nor the inclination to follow complex policy narratives to their conclusion; telling them that the Trickle-Down economic policies implemented 35 years ago are responsible for the gradual erosion of decent jobs and investment in infrastructure, and … hey? Oh Kentucky

It was Bonnie Higdon’s birthday on Wednesday. But instead of celebrating, her husband woke up angry. Christopher Higdon, 66, took his anger out by shooting at the couple’s television. Then he began shooting at Bonnie, who called 911.

But when Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins and Maj. Corey Knochel arrived Bonnie said her husband of 40 years had already decided he was going to take them on.

“I said, ‘Chris, you know police have got more powerful guns than you got,’ because he just had a little rifle. He said, ‘Well, I’ll kill those sons of [expletive] before they should kill me.’ I said, ‘OK, good luck.’ And that’s all I said,” she told WLKY. Her husband then walked outside and opened fire on the officers.

Chaffins fired back, shooting Higdon three times and killing him.

re: #77 Blind Frog Belly White

Take, for example, his ridiculous promise to subject all cop killers to the death penalty by executive order.

That would be clearly unconstitutional. most murders of police officers are punished under state law, and individual states have always had the right to decide if they will or will not use capital punishment.

I favor executing cop killers, but never at the expense of justice or federalism. One might ask Mr. Trump why he lacks faith in America.

A lockdown at Albuquerque City Hall prompted by a suspicious person with a gun has been lifted Friday.

Around 10:15 a.m., Albuquerque police say a man with a holstered handgun attempted to get into the Alternative Dispute Resolution office by banging on locked doors.

APD spokesman Tanner Tixier said the man, who is not being identified at this time, was talking to himself and rambling.

[…]

Police confirmed the man is not a disgruntled employee and his motive is not yet known. APD took one report on the man for another disturbance six years ago, according to Tixier.

Tixier also said it does not appear that the man took his gun out of the holster during the incident.

A lockdown at Second Judicial District Court has also been lifted.

No further information has been released; stay with kob.com for updates.

So I guess watch out in 2021 or so. And I guess he’s white.

Hell, that’ll get a person killed here in the Czech Republic. Deadly force by the police is frowned upon as a general rule, but in a case like that, there’s no question whatsoever that a Czech cop would be perfectly justified in the use of deadly force.

Well in their worldview, all will be right with the world when there is a strong, charismatic man who tells them who to hate, and that as long as they are sincere in their hate (and willing to get their hands a little dirty in solving the problem - coming up with a final solution, as it were), then they will be led to the Promised Land.

Sharpshooting nun who picked off 10-point buck catches flak

A Pennsylvania Navy-vet and current nun who teaches at a catholic school was blasted on social media when she shared an image of her harvest last week.

Benedictine Sister John Paul Bauer of St. Mary’s, a rural area in Erie County that is home to Straub Brewery and the first Benedictine convent in the United States, has been hunting for five years and has successfully bagged both bear and deer in recent seasons. With that, the educator who teaches at Elk County Catholic High School didn’t think twice about sharing a photo of her recent harvest, that of an impressive mature buck with a 16-inch spread.

The image made it to the Diocese’s Facebook page where it received 2.1 million views and 16,585 shares but was pulled after a series of negative comments.

“We did take it down. The majority of the comments were positive, but many of the comments were inflammatory,” Anne-Marie Welsh, a representative for the diocese, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Welsh said they posted the image to give the parish insight into the lives and hobbies of some of their members and never expected a backlash.

“We thought it was an interesting way to show that sisters have different interests and talents along with their vocation,” Welsh said Monday.

IMO, hating on photos of kills from legal and non-canned hunting is improper. Deer hunting is a acceptable and needed thing in many parts of the US.

They’re the ones who decided to actively seek out the votes of whites couldn’t accept the Civil Rights movement and now nearly a half century later the country’s demographic make up won’t allow them to get away with that and they also have an asshole their establishment can’t control. A lot can change but i do agree with the concession that they’re boned for the immediate future since they’ve alienated themselves with so many important demo groups. I think it really showed when Obama managed to beat Romney with Cuban-Americans and I think Clinton could probably beat even Rubio and especially Cruz among them as well. It would be in the long term interest of both the Republican Party and the nation as a whole if the Trump/Carson faction left the GOP. If they come in a distant third (Buddha willing), maybe they disengage from the political process and our system becomes a bit more sane. It also gives the GOP a chance to moderate/modernize on social issues (I don’t expect abortion to go away as an issue, but I could imagine a world where it is minimized), and be something of a “pro-business” center-right party.

Not to sound like a birther, but I’ve read US v. Wong Kim Ark, and based on that, I don’t think Canadian Ted qualifies. OTOH, I think the Electoral College and Congress can exercise their judgment on the issue and its not open to second guessing by the courts, so if Cruz is elected President, he is President, natural-born citizen or not.

A guy can dream, right?

Except Marco Rubio is overtly obsessed with abortion and gay marriage, and he’s being presented as the face of the future for the establishment GOP, so nope.

The following shall be nationals and citizens of the United States at birth:

(g) a person born outside the geographical limits of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is an alien, and the other a citizen of the United States who, prior to the birth of such person, was physically present in the United States or its outlying possessions for a period or periods totaling not less than five years, at least two of which were after attaining the age of fourteen years…

Pretty sure that makes Cruz a natural born citizen. Wong Kim Ark had more to do with the children of foreign nationals born within the United States, rather than the child of US citizens born outside the US.

Also, keep in mind that in 2008, Congress passed a resolution stating that both Obama and McCain (who was born in the Panama Canal Zone) qualified as natural born citizens.

I’m not saying there won’t still be members of the GOP who care about abortion and gay marriage, but I think if the Trump reactionaries and Carson fundamentalists leave the party/process, the reformed GOP would put less of an emphasis on those issues. IMHO, if your citizenship depends on an Act of Congress then you are not a natural born citizen based on US v. Wong Kim Ark which exhaustively analyzed citizenship law. Congress grants citizenship through its naturalization powers, and if you have to be naturalized, then you aren’t natural-born. But I still consider this an academic and political issue, since as I said the courts can’t reverse the judgment of the Electoral College.

I think Ted qualifies, but natural born status is indeed is not as simple as merely having been born to an American citizen.

Congressional law places restrictions on whether your citizen parent can confer citizenship on you when you are born abroad. Which means they can change the law and a person born after the law changes who might’ve qualified before might no longer qualify after, or vice versa. The fact that your citizenship is subject to the will of Congress if you are born abroad demonstrates, in my mind, that people such as Cruz are not natural-born citizens. Natural born citizens are automatically citizens at birth regardless of what law Congress may or may not pass.

Republican Party Attempts To Regroup And Move On After Massacre

it has been two weeks since the tragic melee at the quicken arena that erupted during the 13th ballot for president, where 45 people were killed and scores injured after a fistfight on the floor escalated out of control and numerous concealed carry practitioners attempted to neutralize one another

now that the funerals are over, the party has begun to emerge from mourning to deal with the fact that there is no republican nominee for president

attempts to contact, or even locate donald trump by our organization have been no more successful than any others since the tragedy, as the real estate mogul remains incommunicado with no hint as to his whereabouts and no statements forthcoming from his campaign

other candidates have been more available and forthcoming, even as reince prebus and other gop leaders remain hospitalized, reportedly recovering from shock

ted cruz was eager for the party to get over the tragic debacle and move forward. “as i have been saying all along, i offer the best hope to bring to bring together all wings of the party, to establish in law the bigotry demanded by our base, while at the same time reassuring the traditional washington and wall st leadership that only their interests will receive serious attention in the long run”

jeb bush sought to soothe the broken spirit of the party, saying “i want to extend my heartfelt sympathy once again to all those who suffered or lost loved ones on that tragic day. i hope i can be a part of healing our party and nation, and refocus our party on the fundamental issues that are most important to all americans at this critical juncture in this nation’s history, such as bringing down capital gains taxes.”

marco rubio, when reached for comment, issued an emotional statement, saying “fuck the republican party, and fuck those assholes at quicken arena who spit on my mother and called me a sp** before shooting off two of my fingers. i have already changed my registration to democrat and plan to do all i can when i get back to washington to fight the racist bullshit spouting now out of all orifices of the once great republican party”

Well, you’ve made a statement to that effect, but you haven’t supported it with analysis. Wong Kim Ark lays out a comprehensive legal theory of citizenship which would exclude Cruz from natural born citizenship, so for me to accept he is a natural born citizen, I would want to see an alternative comprehensive legal theory which explains how a person made a citizen by Congress pursuant to its naturalization power could be a natural born citizen. Having said that, would I refuse to vote for a person born outside the US for President if I thought they were otherwise qualified? No, I wouldn’t, because frankly I think that requirement has outlived its usefulness.

It might be completely true with the Dems at this point in history, but it still rings true to many Americans. That is why “bothsiderism” is effective. re: #181 Big Beautiful Door

That code section defines who are nationals and citizens of the US. Subsection (a) covers people born within the jurisdiction of the United States, what you would call a “natural born citizen.” There’s basically two categories of citizenship - birthright and naturalized. But both are defined by Congressional action beyond the 14th Amendment. And the only place where it makes a difference is one’s eligibility to be president or vice-president of the United States (which I’d be in favor of doing away with, but the amendment process is probably too arduous for that).

Nyet  Dec 11, 2015 • 1:43:36pm
Concerning the contention made in earlier cases that everyone who is made a citizen only by
federal statute is a “naturalized” citizen (even those who are made citizens at birth by statute), it
may be noted that the common understanding and usage of the terms “naturalized” and
“naturalization,” as well as the precise legal meaning under current federal law, now indicate that
someone who is a citizen “at birth” is not considered to have been “naturalized.”164 Justice
Breyer, for example, dissenting on other grounds in Miller v. Albright, explained that “this kind of
citizenship,” that is, under “statutes that confer citizenship ‘at birth,’” was not intended to
“involve[ ] ‘naturalization,’” citing current federal law at 8 U.S.C. Section 1101(a)(23).165 The
Supreme Court recently recognized in Tuan Anh Nguyen v. INS, that federal law now specifically
defines “naturalization” as the “conferring of nationality of a state upon a person after birth,”166
and thus it could be argued that by current definition and understanding in federal law and
jurisprudence, one who is entitled to U.S. citizenship automatically “at birth” or “by birth” could
not be considered to be “naturalized.”

How is that case relevant given that Cruz was not born on the US soil?

The child of an American citizen mother and non-citizen father is born a citizen, regardless of where born, if she goes to the embassy to fill out a form and the child spends 5 of its first 14 years in America.

The child of an American citizen father and non-citizen mother, born outside the country, requires a lot of hoops to be jumped through before that child is a citizen. Especially if the father is military serving abroad — they’d need DNA tests and a marriage certificate and the father’s sworn declaration that he wants the child, plus his CO’s permission, and the embassy and/or military might still decide to be dicks about it if they feel like.

Yes, that is the opinion of one attorney. But natural born citizen, according to Wong Kim Ark, is determined in accordance with the english common law definition of natural born subject, incorporated into the Constitution at the time of its framing. Congress can’t change the Constitution simply by passing a law defining terms. The Constitution did not give Congress the power to make natural born citizens; it only has the power to naturalize citizens.

Well I can’t agree that a US Supreme Court opinion interpreting the Constitution isn’t relevant, but the product of a research service interpreting statutory terms is. As an attorney, I would cite a Supreme Court opinion over a research service opinion any day of the week. But again, I will say that I don’t think this is an issue for the courts.
