Saturday Morning Animated Short: “Soar”

Learning to fly
Arts • Views: 49,144

Vimeo

A cross between Miyazaki and Pixar, SOAR is an award-winning 3D animated movie about a young girl who must help a tiny boy pilot fly home before it’s too late. facebook.com

Soar was created as Alyce Tzue’s thesis project in school. What began as a toil of love by first-time filmmakers ended up catching the eyes of festivals all over the world. Soar is the proud 2015 Gold Winner of the 42nd Student Oscars, Best Student Animation Winner at Palm Springs, Finalist at the Student BAFTAs, and has screened in the Hamptons, St. Louis, Seoul, Austin, and more.

The Soar team is beyond grateful for your support. We believe the film’s surprise success is proof of its message: when you put in everything you’ve got, sometimes you achieve more than you ever expected.

There are plans to make Soar into a feature length film inspired by the sensibilities of Hayao Miyazaki and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince. For more information, please contact Alyce Tzue at alyce.tzue@gmail.com.

Misread “Soar” as “Star”, and immediately thought of this:

I saw that Bernie Sanders is a critic of the deal, saying it doesn’t go far enough. That may be, but if he really thinks a deal that would go far enough could actually be reached, he’s an idiot.

Awww, Bernie’s an idealist. No room for real-world thinking in that head of his. But the world needs idealists too! Hopefully as little of it rubs off on others. That is how it works.

re: #4 SteveMcGaziBolaGate RN

Can’t tell whether we need to have the Senate agree to the deal.

Pretty sure all of the targets are still voluntary so there really isn’t anything for the Senate to agree to. Right now I think the US is already on pace to meet or exceed our promises just with better efficiency, increased renewables and replacing a lot of coal plants with natural gas.

The trick is if we actually need congress to act to pass a law to meet the targets, good luck with that.

9
Nyet  Dec 12, 2015 • 11:08:21am

When it comes to climate, “not far enough” may be not simply idealistic carping, but rather an acknowledgment that if the measures are not drastic enough, we’re fucked no matter what else we do.
Anyway, I’ll wait for scientists’ assessments.

I like Bernie although I get nervous about his followers. Bernie is being honest that the agreement is probably not good enough even though it’s the best possible. I like that he’s trying (somewhat Quixotically) to move the discussion to the left.

I don’t think he’ll do anything to poison the well for HRC - I think he’ll do everything he can to help HRC after the nomination - but I don’t necessarily trust his followers to get in the boat. That doesn’t mean I want Bernie to go away.

I blame his parents

In a public conference call with investors last week, Shkreli announced the purchase of the Chagas treatment and said that he would price the drug, benznidazole, similarly to hepatitis C drugs.

Hepatitis C treatments currently cost patients up to a staggering $100,000 for a full treatment.

Talk about cognitive dissonance:

The Palmetto Family Council has started a “Defend Christmas Freedom Hotline” for folks to report religious freedom violations in South Carolina…

The council is researching the credibility of complaints about undisclosed government agencies “banning a Christian symbol of Christmas from a person’s personal space,” Smith said.

The hotline is not just to defend Christmas.

So From Wikipedia:

Benznidazole (INN, formerly marketed by Hoffman-La Roche under the trade names Rochagan and Radanil) is an antiparasitic medication used in the treatment of Chagas disease. Its mechanism of action is the production of free radicals, to which the Trypanosoma cruzi is particularly sensitive given its reduced detoxification capabilities.[1] Roche donated the technology and rights to produce benznidazole to the Brazilian government.[2]

And from the article:

Benznidazole isn’t currently approved in the United States, allowing Shkreli to cash in on hundreds of millions of dollars from a profitable government voucher program — known as a priority review voucher — by developing the drug and then selling it.

Did he buy the rights from Brazil? Does that mean he still needs to take it through FDA approval?

My favorite comment from that article:

Even the “Oops” are bigger in Texas.

But, it’s important to note that this article turned out to be incorrect. Later reports of the incident say that the victim suffered the head injuries during the initial assault, not as a result of the armed intervention.

Still, picking up your brass and fleeing the scene puts this joker well outside the hypothetical definition of “good guy with a gun”.

Actually, a large number of them were purportedly voting as zombies in South Carolina (of course.)

Stoking the zombie-voter fire back then was a list of some 950 names that Republican Gov. Nikki Haley’s DMV director, Kevin Shwedo, said were those of dead people that appeared to have voted in recent elections.

“Well over 900 individuals appear to have voted after they died,” Shwedo said at one House hearing on the matter.

Horry County Republican Rep. Alan Clemmons, who took much interest in the dead voter drama, proclaimed gravely in another hearing, “We must have certainty in South Carolina that zombies aren’t voting.”

Notice the clock tower in the background where the UT Gunman snipered a bunch of people.

To the best of my knowledge, the UT sniper was the last mass murderer to use a manual action rifle. That was in 1966. Australia knew what they were doing when they placed severe restrictions on (but did not “ban”) SA weapons after the Tasmania massacre.

Also worth noting: The tower gunman was in fact engaged by a number of “good guys with guns,” certainly by more than any recent mass shooter. A TV reporter indicated that a number of bystanders had grabbed rifles from their cars and pickups and were plinking away at the tower, to no avail. He was finally done in by a police officer who made it up the tower and smoked him with a pump shotgun.

People who haven’t been there very often have no idea how important physical fitness, especially endurance, is in combat. There is a reason the military subjects trainees to constant running, pushups, 30 mile marches, and the like.

USS Milwaukee breaks down at sea

The littoral combat ship USS Milwaukee, the Navy’s newest ship that was commissioned in Milwaukee in November, broke down at sea Friday and had to be towed more than 40 nautical miles to a base in Little Creek, Va., the Navy Times reported.

The ship, constructed at the Marinette Marine Corp. shipyard in Marinette, suffered an engineering problem while in route from Halifax, Canada, to Mayport, Fla., and ultimately its home port of San Diego, according to a post on the Navy Times website.

The cause of the problem on the ship — which was towed to the Joint Expeditionary Base at Little Creek, Va. — is being evaluated by the ship’s crew and technical consultants, according to the Times.

Initial indications are that fine metal debris that collected in the lube oil filter caused the system to shut down, but the cause is not known, the Times reported.

I simply do not understand how openly carrying long weapons with covered faces is allowed anywhere. It used to be that if you dressed like that, you were committing a robbery and police were called. Now it’s a form of protest??

I’m going to sound like a whiny liberal here, but speaking as a gun owner and carrier, We The People need some kind of prohibition against this shit. Intimidation, confusion caused to law enforcement, and general public safety are all at issue. When your local white boys think it’s OK to dress up like fucking Hamas and hang out on the street with loaded weapons, it’s time for a societal head check.

I find it to be a form of intimidation especially the fuckwad we saw earlier carrying his penis surrogate to the women having the rally for gun control. Honestly, if gun owners want to know why people like me in part have a negative view of guns, it’s shit like that. It’s pathetic and it needs to stop.

Editorial: No state has been so ill-served by its governor as Wisconsin

Walker announced last week the state will provide a grant of roughly $100,000 to Amery-based Northwest Communications to expand broadband Internet access in Barron County — as part of a plan to distribute $1.5 million in broadband expansion grants during this budget year.

“High-speed broadband Internet access, that will help in terms of small businesses,” said Walker. “It’ll help farmers. It’ll help forestry. It certainly will help our schools and education in the state.”

True enough.

But you know what would have helped a lot more?

Accepting tens of millions in federal funding that could have been used to expand high-speed Internet service in schools, libraries and government agencies.

In 2011, barely a month into his governorship, Walker’s administration returned $23 million in federal stimulus money that was supposed to be used to improve broadband connections for 380 Wisconsin communities — including 385 libraries and 82 schools. The money could also have been used “to improve police, fire department and hospital communications in rural areas,” according to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports at the time.

I’m sure his tertiary wing feathers are trimmed to limit full flight. He would be quite calm and relaxed being held if he felt secure though. Wings held in that position say that he feels his support is about to drop from under his feet.
