A major step forward today in humanity’s exploration of space, as the SpaceX first stage booster sticks the landing at Cape Canaveral. I watched this live and got chills, then got chills again watching for the second time. This is a huge technological achievement.

The very first Falcon 9 first stage has successfully landed at Landing Zone 1, formally Launch Complex 13, of Cape Canaveral after launching as part of the OG-2 return to flight mission from Space Launch Complex 40 just 10 minutes before landing.

Can we maybe, somehow, get Trump to mention SpaceX so the cable news channels will talk about it?

What? Is he still talking about Hillary at the debate? That’s just…weird, man. The guy is weird.

If I recall correctly Musk threw a little shade at Bezos after the successful BO VTOL test. I’d say he is within his rights to needle him back a little.

Now comes the fun part. Disassembly and re-certification of the first stage. Successful recovery was only the first step. A major one I grant, but can the engines and hull be reused? Much testing to be still done.

I’m not sure they will reuse this one-I suspect they’ll tear it apart and do microscopic analysis on all the components.

This is a monumental triumph. I will not even look at free republic’s response, since they almost universally despise Elon Musk and adore the profiteering legacy contractors. All the latter have now is their numerous pet Congress-critters. Is it enough to derail SpaceX and keep the Lockheed-Boeing gravy train rolling? I really don’t think so, but we shall see.

Thus the disassembly and re-certification. They will do it on each unit.

Musk says they’re keeping this one on the ground.

Glad to see it worked as it was supposed to.
