Saturday Jam: The Dukes of September, “Kid Charlemagne”

A fantastic version of the classic Steely Dan song by the Dukes of September, featuring Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs, and Jon Herrington taking over for Larry Carlton with a terrific guitar solo. (Carlton’s original on the recorded version was one of the all-time great solos.)

Here in Ventura County the day after Christmas was marked by yet another wildfire, because fucking California.

Commuters traveling through Ventura County during the holiday weekend got some relief Saturday afternoon as the 101 Freeway reopened following an overnight closure prompted by a wind-driven wildfire that grew to 1,250 acres and prompted evacuations near Solimar Beach.

The blaze broke out on Christmas around 11 p.m. and was pushed by 50 mph winds, Ventura County Fire Department Chief Mike Lorenzen said.

We’re getting a new batch of Marco Rubio commercials here in Iowa. They’re touting him as the Republican Hillary doesn’t want to run against.

Frankly they just make him the Republican I want to not so much want to punch in the face for being a smarmy SOB like Ted Cruz, but instead give a good slap upside the head for being a WATB.

I learned it by listening. And listening, and listening….

(I don’t read, so transcription was not an option. But that solo really sharpened my ability to recognize what I was hearing.)

I’ve always wondered how many pro musicians have perfect pitch.

I suspect it’s as much a curse as an advantage. Perhaps less so in a world with cheap accurate tuners but a disadvantage in many ways. There’s a lot of music out there where the band is in tune with each other, but not tuned to an objective standard.

I wonder if people with perfect pitch go crazy from that. Do they have to tune to the recording in order to be comfortable playing it? ;)

Groups have multiple tricks. tuning up, down and alternate tunings. Flat, sharp. A slightly out of tune backline piano can lead to insanity. Capoing is a slight of hand I came late to. If one person in a band has perfect pitch, he will forever be let down.

It just seems a natural path.

A good friend of mine from high school and college had perfect pitch. She studied music, hoping for a career singing opera. But her voice was not exceptional, so she ended up in the administration side of opera. That bored her silly, so she went back to school to become … a doctor.

You can learn relative pitch. I studied composition in college for a while and you can acquire and hone the skill with practice. Having said that, some folks have a natural ability to hear intervals and I’ve always been a bit jealous of that talent.

I think relative pitch is more important than perfect pitch when it comes to learning music. I worked with a keyboard player/vocalist (and piano tuner) who had perfect pitch. He was impressed when I could sing him a sixth. I’m a drummer.

I certainly am jealous of that.

Jack Semple was a friend of a friend and went to the same high school I did, so is an acquaintance of mine . Although he started playing flamenco from a really young age, he could pick up all music almost magically. I haven’t asked him, but I assumed he had perfect pitch.

My chorus teacher in high school made us practice solfeggio as warm-ups at the start of every class: each interval (do-re, do-mi, do-fa, etc. ) and runs like do-mi-sol-mi, re-fa-la-fa, and so on. A few years of that locked those intervals in my head forever.

Not my sight reading skills, though. I always did poorly on that examination in high school, and now I can’t read music worth beans.

If I were to do the band thing at this point in my life, it would be pure instrumental like The Ventures or Scale The Summit. My voice is not that good and I’d rather just concentrate on making the song do the work.

I don’t write code, so no. But stories that I’ve written? Yup, all the time. I have a draft novel sitting on my desk that it took me way too long to write (seven years, maybe, life kept getting in the way and inspiration was flighty), and as I was editing I just kept thinking “wow, that’s dumb, I need to change that.” I have a feeling if I get around to actually finishing the editing process it still won’t be something I’ll try to publish

79
Interesting Times  Dec 26, 2015 • 7:22:22pm

Has anyone here seen The Reader or read the novel on which it’s based? I saw the movie a few weeks ago and it left me feeling messed up for days. Especially in light of today’s political climate - where the Overton window has been so thoroughly shattered that an openly fascist campaign is now treated as acceptable - it made me realize on a visceral, gut level how Nazi Germany happened.

Just wondering if anyone else has a similar interpretation…

That’s a reasonable point but to go back the other way, one of the things I like best about Scale the Summit is that by being instrumental they avoid the “verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus” structural trap of most pop music.

You only have to write in that framework if it serves the song. It’s a convention that’s pretty easily subverted if that’s the way you want to go.

One of my favorite quotes ever is from Todd Rundgren, who knows his way around writing a song - ‘The great thing about songwriting is that no one can tell you you’re doing it wrong.’
