Hilarious Sunday Short: “The Talk”

WARNING: Not for young children unless you want an awkward talk with them.

There comes a time in every parent’s life when the harsh reality hits — their child is growing up. And with that realization comes an event, a moment, faced with fear and trepidation, when said parent takes time from their busy day to have a special chat with their child, a talk if you will. And as with all parenting moments when dads are in charge, it goes horribly, horribly wrong.

The comedic slice-of-life short THE TALK is about such a parenting moment mishap. Starring the immensely talented JOHN HOOGENAKKER (Public Enemies, Empire) and lovable rising star ISABELLA CROVETTI-CRAMP (Joy, Colony) it is a cautionary tale of the pitfalls of parenting — of epic proportions — and reminds us that life is not always as it seems.

MAKE SURE TO WATCH IN 1080p.

I initially thought it said “Hillary Sunday Short: The Talk” and thought it was some sort of campaign commercial.

re: #25 makeitstop

I fail to see what the strategy was.

Both offenses had performed not well for a quarter and a half. Patriots defense had momentum. Because it is not Sudden Death OT anymore, and Bellichek trusts his defense, he made a field position gamble. Forcing the Jets to go 80 to beat you is a calculated risk, with a high reward value. Got the best kicker in the league. Jets start at their own 20. Likely he thinks, they can force a punt and give Brady and the offense the ball at about their own 35. Do that, get 30 yards for a make-able FG by Gotskowski.

What Trump has done is not only sucked all the air out of the campaign for Republican nomination but it appears to me that he has also created an exhaustion of such breadth that other hot button topics can barely get any attention.

Is it possible the Pats actually wanted Slater to “defer” and if the Jets took the ball, they would then select the wind? By selecting to “kick” they got neither the ball, or wind.

(I could easily be wrong)

Well explained, thanks.

But if it’s not Sudden Death any more, why was the game over when the Jets scored the TD?

If the first team gets a field goal the other team gets the opportunity to either get a field goal to tie or a TD to win. Still sudden death on a TD.

The leagues attempt to limit the effect a coin toss can have on the game.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Jesus was gender fluid!

Remind Christians again that 90% of our image of Jesus is filled in to fit our preconceived notions. The Evangelists were intentionally vague about many key details of his birth, death or appearance, focusing only on those stories that supported their claim that he was The Messiah.

Quick clarification. It is not sudden death on first points scored unless the first score is a Touchdown. A Field Goal cannot end overtime on the first possession. New rule starting last year I believe.

That was the rule change made for sudden death-only a TD score would end the game and not a field goal unless the other team fails to score when they get the ball after a three-point conversion by the other team.

re: #37 lizardofid

I believe it’s game over if your score a touchdown, but a field goal allows the other team to possess the ball.

Also, game ends if team with initial possession gives up a Safety (2 pts)

Smith25's Liberal Thighs  Dec 27, 2015 • 2:16:12pm

I say this as no fan of New England: Bellichick has some of the biggest coaching stones in the world. He has made call after call that are considered to be “outside of the box” Some have come back to haunt him(this one, the 4th and 2 pass at the Colts on Monday Night several years ago) but he has won 4 Super Bowls as a Head Coach, and one(or two) more as a Defensive Coordinator. Got plenty of respect for someone who can do something against the norm like that.

The Evangelists (whose real names we don’t even know - all the gospels are anonymous, with the traditional names arbitrarily attached much later) freely invented the key details as they went along in order to fit Jesus’ life to the OT prophecies, which they then duly cited. Which makes the gospels extremely unreliable, if at all useful, as historical sources.

An inch of rain in an hour seems like science fiction to me. It’s taken three months for us to get a little over an inch total.

There is very little in this world better than Science Fiction.

Greetings from frozen Lubbock. The bad part of the storm is not the cold and the snow, both of which are fairly moderate, but the howling wind, which has averaged over 40 mph for almost 24 hours now. This piles the snow into hard packed drifts that are hard to see but that will trap almost any car and most 4wds that don’t have chains. City crews are doing their best but they could not conceivably have the equipment for this kind of once- in-50- years event. There have also been a couple of power outages, but the utility crews have the lights up and running again. My front drive Dodge minivan will handle it well enough for me to get to the store a couple of blocks away, but I am not going anywhere else till it clears. My hosts have been wonderful and I made beef stew for everyone tonight. Should be just the thing. It’s ready now so I will be back later.

I see the assassination meme on Trump is rising again on Twitter.

Trump’s ugliness has all sorts of side-effects.

At its heart, Trump;s anti-humanism, pro-self world view is the adult (term used loosely) form of infantilism.

The willingness to kill another is deeply rooted in our basic animal instincts of survival. To tap into these instincts one has to really work at pushing the most primal of buttons.

And Trump is good at that.

A bit about the Jewish counterpart of Muslim radicals, from a former head of Shin Bet, no less:

Anyone who thinks we’re talking about no more than a few dozen wild-eyed youths is bitterly mistaken. In the State of Judea there are hundreds of young people (some no longer that young) who adhere to messianic and/or anarchic and anti-authoritarian ideologies. Among those hundreds are dozens who each day apply some level of violence or terrorism against the persons or possessions of Palestinians. Among them are dozens who would be willing, without hesitation, to apply violence and terrorism against their Jewish brethren should their idea of the sanctity of the land ever be put to the test. According to some scenarios, the ranks of these extremists might mushroom.
[…]
Religious Zionism still isn’t the majority in Israel, but as a very significant elite it has succeeded in making an ugly contribution toward the de facto establishment of the State of Judea, and it’s on its way to try and take over (democratically) the State of Israel. This, without a doubt, is a triumph for the ideology of religious Zionism, but it’s a Pyrrhic and tragic victory.

This is because religious Zionism has, unknowingly, sown the seeds of its own destruction. It gave birth to extreme religious nationalism, which in turn gave birth to its own right-wing competitor of extreme Jewish messianism, which itself gave birth to the Hilltop Youth, who are anti-authoritarian, violent, and extreme and who support the “revolutionary” values of Jewish supremacy (yes, Jewish supremacy) as well as a halakhic state, terrorism, hatred toward the other, and racism. Today, even the rabbis who delivered these wild-eyed ideologies are considered too soft and moderate for many of their followers.

A halakhic state would be as nightmarish as any sharia state.

re: #133 The Vicious Babushka

Why returning to the “Gold Standard is fucked up.

I have a better reason, the U.S.A. currently has $1.39 Trillion in currency in circulation. That is the bare minimum amount of gold the Treasury would have to have on hand in order to back all dollars with gold.

Wiith gold at its current price of $1078.80 per Troy ounce the math goes like this…
1.39 Trillion divided by 1078.8 equals
1,288,468,668.9 Troy ounces of gold.
(The Treasury only has 261,498,926)

How about if we try volume, how much gold is that?
1,288,468,668.9 Troy ounces at 0.098 cubic inches each gives you 126,269,929.55 cubic inches of gold. Converted into cubic feet this is approximately 73,073 cubic feet of gold!

How about by weight the normal person can understand?
1,288,468,668.9 Troy ounces each of which are 0.0686 of a pound equals a whopping 88,352,137 pounds of gold!

Anyway the whole thing is a pipedream to start with unless they can explain how the Treasury is going to suddenly come up with 5 times the gold it currently has. ;)

re: #220 ausador

Anyway the whole thing is a pipedream to start with unless they can explain how the Treasury is going to suddenly come up with 5 times the gold it currently has. ;)

Of course, the problem is that you’re only considering currency. You’re not including demand deposits, checking accounts, and other MZM (money at zero maturity). According to the St. Louis Federal Reserve, there is $13,730.7 billion in MZM in the US right now. So for the current gold supply of 261.5 million troy ounces of gold to cover all of that, you’d need gold to be priced at $52,500 per ounce. And that’s not considering CDs and other time deposits and commercial paper in M1, M2, and M3.

So there’s another argument about why the gold standard makes no damn sense for America now.

Actually by law the Treasury is forced to value its gold at only $42.2222 per Troy ounce when it values the gold reserves. (A very old statute apparently)

That’s from the Nixon administration in 1971, as part of the last-ditch effort to save the Bretton Woods system. For most of American history, the value of gold was $20.67 per troy ounce, rising to $35 after the 1933 Roosevelt executive order and enshrined by Bretton Woods at its inception in 1944.

In fact, the entire internet seems more broken now than it has ever been. I get more slow connections, more links that have gone bad, and overall I am beginning to doubt whether we’ll be able to keep our information infrastructure in any sense sound.

In this era of all electronic and now all-“cloud” based lives, our collective memories - what the future humans can use to write their history of our times - will so easily be erased.

There should be a special award for mixing the genres of (1) retro-1970’s TV Christmas Specials with (2) Japanese semi-erotic cos-play aerobics.

J-pop girl groups generally seem geared toward two demographic groups: young teenagers and older men with Lolita fetishes.

As for costuming, there’s a variety show here in China, called Happy Family (or Happy Camp) 快乐大本营. The five hosts (3 men, 2 women) change outfits several times during the show, and the costumes range from childish to weird to trendy.

That said, the five are actually quite talented, and one is a university professor!

Using the numbers in this thread, if you backed only American MZM ($13,730 billion) with all the gold ever mined (171,300 tons or 5,507 million troy ounces), you’d need the price of gold to more than double to $2,500 per troy ounce. That’s not counting the rest of America’s money and “near money” or what the rest of the world would use, or the billions of Indians and Chinese you’ve pissed off by taking their gold.

For the average schmo, the Gold Standard is a really, really bad idea. The folks who push it talk about inflation, as if it were 1) just around the corner! and 2) an unalloyed evil.

Well, it IS an evil if your income comes from interest. Your revenue stream gets smaller. OTOH, if a lot of your income goes to servicing debt, and your income rises with everything else, your debt becomes less onerous, and your payments smaller in real terms.

Oh, they just throw away all the “fiat” money (forget for the moment that gold only has value because we agree it does which means it’s just as much a fiat) and reprint back at $20 an ounce like in 1900 for $5,229,978,520. The economic innumerancy of not understanding what the deflation of the money supply from 1.5 trillion to 5 billion would do to the global economy is more staggering than the stupidity of actually doing it.

They count on people not knowing their economic history, about not knowing about the devastating bank runs that occurred every 10-15 years and took away the life savings of millions and left people with no money at all with which to buy life’s necessities, or the grinding effects of deflation eating away at incomes year after year (at a time when a far greater proportion of the population were primary producers such as farmers and miners than is true today). Most of the goldbugs have no experience with that kind of work.

The wheelers and dealers were able to deal with the original gold standard- this is when the Rockefellers, J.P. Morgan, etc. became billionaires. Their heirs would agree to such a system after making sure their interests were protected, no matter what happened to the USA’s 320 million peons.

I started reading it in 9th grade but was bored out of my mind after the first two chapters, put it away and read LOTR instead.

Proof you are a very wise woman.

Well, a good exercise for your Mandarin, too.

You got it. It’ll be fun, because I can eat the results of the mandarin lesson.

I stop most pollsters with “my number is on the governmental do not call list.”

The “do not call” list covers most (but not all) commercial telemarketers and not much else. It has and will never cover pollsters & market research.

From the Rude Pundit: Hillary Clinton Responds to Donald Trump: A Christmas Fantasia

“Losing to Barack Obama? That wasn’t getting schlonged. Being forced to respond to every stupid thing vomited out of Donald Trump’s mouth, the really disgusting thing in this whole bullshit uproar? That is not just me getting schlonged, but the entire country. Vote for me and I’ll cut off his schlong and toss into the garbage disposal, where it belongs.

“Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

That’s the finale. The buildup is also pretty good.

But - extremely NSFW, because it’s the Rude One.

Mass post-Christmas brawl shuts down Kentucky mall: Thousands of unruly youths cause havoc as shoppers flee

As many as 2,000 children were involved in mass brawl at a mall in Kentucky last night, as a wave of violence at shopping centers spread across America.

Shocking video showed shoppers charging out of Mall St Matthews in Louisville after a huge number of teenagers sparked mayhem, with dozens of reports of fights.

Youths harassed store employees and tried to prevent businesses from closing as police attempted to shut down the mall.

The chaos came just a day after another brawl at a mall in Florida saw scores of teenagers - including dozens of girls - lash out at each other in the street.

There were also minor disturbances on Saturday at shopping centers in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Long Island, New York.

I can’t. I enjoy lying to them too much. Still remembered 2012, when they kept calling me daily and I lied to them that I was voting for Romney…

SteveMcGaziBolaGate RN  Dec 27, 2015 • 8:03:38pm

When I get a pollster (or a telemarketer) I sometimes let the call go on and on. I keep saying “Whaat?” or misunderstand the question and at some point I just silently disconnect the call. I figure hanging up right away does them a favor.
