WSJ: US Monitored Contacts Between Israel and GOP Members of Congress as They Tried to Subvert Iran Deal

Outrageous, but not for the reason the right wing media want you to believe
World • Views: 50,801

Right wing sites all over the net are screaming that this report from the Wall Street Journal proves President Obama “hates Israel.” For example:

But if you actually read about what was going on, the Obama administration had very good reason to continue surveillance of Netanyahu and his right wing Israeli government, because they were spying on the US and blatantly trying to subvert our government’s negotiations with Iran, even leaking information obtained by spying to members of Congress: U.S. Spy Net on Israel Snares Congress.

The U.S., pursuing a nuclear arms agreement with Iran at the time, captured communications between Mr. Netanyahu and his aides that inflamed mistrust between the two countries and planted a political minefield at home when Mr. Netanyahu later took his campaign against the deal to Capitol Hill.

The National Security Agency’s targeting of Israeli leaders and officials also swept up the contents of some of their private conversations with U.S. lawmakers and American-Jewish groups. That raised fears—an “Oh-s— moment,” one senior U.S. official said—that the executive branch would be accused of spying on Congress.

White House officials believed the intercepted information could be valuable to counter Mr. Netanyahu’s campaign. They also recognized that asking for it was politically risky. So, wary of a paper trail stemming from a request, the White House let the NSA decide what to share and what to withhold, officials said. “We didn’t say, ‘Do it,’ ” a senior U.S. official said. “We didn’t say, ‘Don’t do it.’ ”

Stepped-up NSA eavesdropping revealed to the White House how Mr. Netanyahu and his advisers had leaked details of the U.S.-Iran negotiations—learned through Israeli spying operations—to undermine the talks; coordinated talking points with Jewish-American groups against the deal; and asked undecided lawmakers what it would take to win their votes, according to current and former officials familiar with the intercepts.

It’s a measure of how utterly deranged the right wing media have gotten that they’re angrier at President Obama for keeping watch on a foreign government’s attempt to subvert US policy than they are at the outrageous behavior of Benjamin Netanyahu.

And by the way, that deal with Iran that Netanyahu tried to sabotage is working so far: Kerry: Iran Ships Uranium to Russia in ‘Significant’ Step for Nuclear Deal.

WASHINGTON — A ship carrying more than 25,000 pounds of low-enriched uranium materials left Iran for Russia on Monday in a step toward honoring Iran’s July 14 nuclear deal with major powers, the United States said.

[…]

A key provision of the agreement — negotiated by Iran with the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany — is Tehran’s commitment to reduce its stockpile of low-enriched uranium to below 660 pounds (300 kg).

If much further refined, low-enriched uranium can yield fissile material for nuclear weapons.

“The shipment included the removal of all of Iran’s nuclear material enriched to 20 percent that was not already in the form of fabricated fuel plates for the Tehran Research Reactor,” U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in a written statement.

This is the key graf:

Stepped-up NSA eavesdropping revealed to the White House how Mr. Netanyahu and his advisers had leaked details of the U.S.-Iran negotiations—learned through Israeli spying operations—to undermine the talks; coordinated talking points with Jewish-American groups against the deal; and asked undecided lawmakers what it would take to win their votes, according to current and former officials familiar with the intercepts.

Put plainly, Israel was spying on the US, and the NSA counter-intel operations uncovered Israel spying on the US.

That’s where the leaks came from. That’s how Netenyahu got his information. And that’s how GOPers in Congress got information about the Iran deal - from Israeli sources - coordinating talking points to oppose the deal.

So again to recap, Israel spied on the US. The US NSA spied on Israel revealing Israel’s spy operations and scope of said operations re: Iran deal.

Yet, the US is somehow in the wrong on this? Seriously?

Everyone spies on their allies and foes alike. It’s what spy agencies are supposed to do, but if you are going to attack the Obama Administration for spying on Israel as somehow anti-Israel policy, you better explain how Israel’s spying on the US isn’t anti-US policy meant to undermine US strategic and tactical goals/objectives in the Middle East.

You know, if Obama’s America really was the tyrannical empire that the wingularity makes it out to be (or is today one of the days that Obama’s America is a crumbling republic because of weak and ineffective leadership?)… Israel wouldn’t have dared to do something like this because they’d’ve been crushed under the heels of American boots… or something.

Ever since I got on FB a few years ago, I’ve commented on posts that appear in my feed, often because they were liked by family members. Usually those comments die a lonely death, with one or two Likes. In the last week, however, at least 4 times I’ve made comments that got dozens, even hundreds of Likes. One comment on an NPR thread about the Tamir Rice non-indictment got nearly 500 Likes.

What the hell happened? Did I suddenly become eloquent? Or is it just that so many like-minded people have this week off and are hanging out on FB because they have nothing better to do?

Yes, it’s true, they were. Because GOP members of Congress were conspiring with a foreign government to sabotage the US — a foreign government that was spying on us.

Background on Invitation to Prime Minister Netanyahu - January 28, 2015

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted Speaker Boehner’s invitation to address a joint meeting of Congress. In the days since, there have been questions regarding the nature and origin of the Speaker’s invitation.

A handful of media reports have claimed that the Israelis “orchestrated” the invitation. This is flat-out wrong. As Speaker Boehner has said, the Congress is a separate and co-equal branch of government. It was the Speaker’s right to invite the Prime Minister of Israel, and he did so for one reason and one reason only: so the Prime Minister could speak about one of the most important issues facing the Middle East and the world - the stakes regarding Iran.

In the interests of transparency, here is relevant background information that the Office of the Speaker has provided to the media:

* The process of inviting the Prime Minister was a coordinated effort between Speaker Boehner’s office and Senate Majority Leader McConnell’s office. Discussions began on the staff level late last year.

It’s called counterespionage, and the NSA did its job - identifying that Israel was spying on the US and passing along information to GOPers in Congress and to anti-deal advocates in and outside the government.

Israel was looking to shape and change the terms of the debate. They were actively engaging in meddling in the functioning of the USG.

Shapiro and his ilk will ignore that, instead focusing on the NSA uncovering the leaks to Congress (from Israel - which they’ll demote to paragraph 30 buried on page A-30).

TA-NEHISI COATES brings it.

When I was around 10 years old, my father confronted a young man who was said to be “crazy.” The young man was always too quick to want to fight. A foul in a game of 21 was an insult to his honor. A cross word was cause for a duel, and you never knew what that cross word might be. One day, the young man got into it with one of my older brother’s friends. The young man pulled a metal stake out of the ground (there was some work being done nearby) and began swinging it wildly in a threatening manner. My father, my mother, or my older brother—I don’t recall which—told the other boy to go inside of our house. My dad then came outside. I don’t really remember what my father said to the young man. Perhaps he said something like “Go home,” or maybe something like, “Son, it’s over.” I don’t really recall. But what I do recall is that my dad did not shoot and kill the young man.

re: #90 The Vicious Babushka

The militia members have been insisting that Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward create a sanctuary so the Hammonds will be immune from surrendering. Ward met with the militiamen and rejected that demand. The militia has since labeled him an “enemy of the people.” Ward said he has received emailed death threats among thousands of messages from across the country regarding the Hammonds.

So much for that theory about them believing in the authority of the sheriff.

And the usual suspects are there:

Ammon Bundy once helped his father repulse the government in an armed showdown on a Nevada desert. He was Tasered for his effort.

Ryan Payne, an electrician from Montana, joined that same standoff and boasted of organizing civilians into sniper squads that drew a bead on federal agents.

And not long ago, Jon Ritzheimer worried the FBI with his threatening rants against Muslims in Arizona and elsewhere.

Now, the men say, they are in Burns to help Dwight and Steven Hammond.

Payne and others want a local sanctuary created to shield the men from surrendering for federal prison, a move the Hammonds don’t support.

And yet, the overwhelming majority of the media reports on this story emphasize that “the NSA was spying on Congress.”

Yes, it’s true, they were. Because GOP members of Congress were conspiring with a foreign government to sabotage the US — a foreign government that was spying on us.

It’s one thing to understand everybody spies in the abstract sense. But what is also expected is consequences when caught. While Bibi and Obama have serious problems, the relationship is bigger than both of them. By the measure of financial and military relationships between the Pentagon and Israel things have rarely been better.

So Israel crossed a red line. Now what?

They’re professional “tough guys” (who are intimidated by 74-year-old women and 78-year-old men.)

The sheriff said three militiamen and one woman, one with a gun strapped to his hip, engaged his 74-year-old mother and 78-year-old father at a yard sale being held at the American Legion. When the men criticized the sheriff, his mother bristled, and said she didn’t need their protection from the government.

Later, the men showed up at the sheriff’s office to complain about the exchange involving his mother.

She had, they said, threatened them.

re: #136 jaunte

It’s quite the rant.

I find it to be a bit ahistorical though.

In no sense am I trying to defend the contemporary GOP, but it was founded for purposes different than the Gawker article makes it sound.

Before the Great Depression one could say the politics of the US was very much tied to the region of the country. Rich people could always have the advantage regardless of party.

With the advent of FDR and his programs/policies perhaps it became a bit more clear that the Republican party was the party of the wealthy, but I still believe that the common Republicans were more so due to historical (Civil War) reasons than being part of a “trick”.

The GOP which Gawker describes I propose really became that way with the Gingrich “Contract” - a way of selling under the guise of populism a systematic destruction of the idea that government really did exist for the purpose of social safety nets.

Oh, and the shocking news today that Trump uses aerosol hairspray…

I had missed that. We’re living in a Joseph Heller novel.

“You can’t use hair spray, because hair spray is going to affect the ozone,” the billionaire mogul told crowd.

He continued, pausing to pantomime spraying and styling his shag carpet-like hair: “I’m in my room, in New York City, and I want to put a little spray…but I hear they don’t want me to use hairspray, they want me to use the pump.”

The presidential candidate very much prefers aerosol hair spray to “the pump” version, which he said “comes out in big globs and it’s stuck in your hair and you say, ‘oh my god, I’ve gotta take a shower again because my hair’s all screwed up.’”

Trump also contended that using aerosol hair products in his “sealed” apartment can’t cause harm to the environment.

Aren’t these folks who are complaining the loudest the same ones that say, “If you’re not doing anything wrong you shouldn’t worry about surveillance”?

re: #27 Backwoods_Sleuth

Why, yes.
Funny how that works…

Peter King, two days ago on 12/28:

Republican Congressman Peter King today continued to defend his call for mosque surveillance by saying, “People in the Muslim community should want this type of surveillance.”

King said on CNN earlier tonight that the feds went into Italian neighborhoods when they targeted the mafia, and “if you’re looking for the Klan, you don’t go to Harlem, you go where the threat is coming from.”

He insisted that there’s a serious threat from the Muslim community, and given how he thinks most Muslims are “good patriotic Americans,” King thought they “would want to have the assistance of the FBI.” […]

mediaite.com

In the video he brought up the Mafia, the (Irish) Westies, etc. but didn’t say anything about law enforcement following them into their churches to watch them.

I wonder how many in the GOP would be okay with the feds spying on the churches because of radical Christians who have murdered abortion doctors—I mean surely patriotic American Christians would welcome that, right? RIGHT??

Fucking assholes. They’d be screaming about the First Amendment & persecution in a heartbeat. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

We hauled the yard waste trash can underneath and tossed it directly into that. It would have been a lot easier with a garden trowel or something along those lines, but the one we had was disposed of a few years ago and so there wasn’t anything thin enough to fit into the opening.

Mouse kibble?

Birdseed, dry cat food, and lab blocks. I have some snakes, so I have experience with mice.

btw, I’m getting out of the snake biz because feeding them sucks if you like animals, but it’s a slow process. If anyone here wants a Ball Python, let me know. I can ship for about $100 in the spring, or you can pick up in Lisle, IL.

The thing is, they want to monitor all mosques, not just those known for preaching hate (if there are even any still left being stupid enough to do so openly). I’m fairly certain sane Christians wouldn’t be okay with their churches being the targets of the kind of mass surveillance the wingnuts want on mosques.

Yes, monitoring all mosques is insane, and very Republican. They want to make our friends into enemies so they have someone for the rubes to hate.

LOL, Google Alert came in. Pamela is screeching about Sharia in Las Vegas. Yes, really. Apparently, if the police investigate possible hate crimes against mosques, then they’re submitting to Sharia. Her headline:

Sharia in Las Vegas: Police HUNT Man Who Placed BACON On Mosque’s Door Handles

She says it’s not a crime to put bacon on the handles of a mosque in the U.S., therefore the fact that they do indeed consider it a crime makes them dhimmis or something. That thread currently has 165 comments, which is far more than the next one about Obama Spying on Israel!!11!, which only has 20.

They appear to love nothing better than hating on Muslims. I wonder if she & her knuckle-dragging followers would consider it a crime if someone put bacon on the door handles of a synagogue?…

Depends on your line of work. Blue collar people have been in big trouble for years now as the government allowed their work to be outsourced for a pittance, and the white collar work is not what it once was. IT is still doing well, and paying me well, but that can dry up too.

Repeating myself, yet again - I believe the angst many Americans are experience is not due to “economic blight” but rather existential despair.

The old ways with their easy answers to life’s problem don’t fit so well anymore.

I call this “worldview collapse” as I think what we are experiencing are the pangs of becoming a post-Christian society.

Europe was forced ahead of us in this due to WWI.

I think worldview collapse is part of it, though cons still refuse to update their worldview at all, so it’s a hell of a slow collapse, but I’m sure a lot of it comes down to economic opportunity. People turn mean when they lose hope for a better future.

As for the many who can’t find a job in a field in which they’ve worked - this is why Trump can go around and get so much support with his protectionist speeches. I can agree with the idea the “free trade” has in fact led to some target job losses in this country. And because so many people can’t find gainful employment our politics are now taking a turn towards the more protectionist empathies.

When in Council Bluffs last night Trump mentioned Newton, Iowa.

Newton became a news story when Maytag decided to pick up an leave:

cbsnews.com

In some ways one could see where Trump has a point - Newton could no longer compete. It lost. Big.

I was in Newton briefly this year. Like most towns in that part of the country it was pleasant enough. It’s not like it used to be, though. Driving around to different towns some clearly fared worse than others from the de-industrialization.

I mention it here because that part of Iowa is one reason why Iowa was a “purple” state - plenty of FDR Democrats in central and eastern Iowa.

But with the loss of jobs due to small (or in this case, not so small) businesses moving out of the state (and country), the economic loss was a personal loss to many.

So in come the opportunists whistling Dixie (in some cases literally, which is odd considering the history of these regions in the Civil War.)

Perot tapped into the angst. The Tea Partiers likewise. Now comes Donald Trump.

So yes, there is a difference between losing your job and losing your God. I didn’t mean to conflate the two.

Nevada Revised Statute 207.200:

Unlawful trespass upon land; warning against trespassing.
1.  Unless a greater penalty is provided pursuant to NRS 200.603, any person who, under circumstances not amounting to a burglary:
(a) Goes upon the land or into any building of another with intent to vex or annoy the owner or occupant thereof, or to commit any unlawful act; or
(b) Willfully goes or remains upon any land or in any building after having been warned by the owner or occupant thereof not to trespass,
is guilty of a misdemeanor

I would say that the actions definitely qualify under subsection (a).

Also, Nevada Revised Statute 207.190

 Coercion.
1.  It is unlawful for a person, with the intent to compel another to do or abstain from doing an act which the other person has a right to do or abstain from doing, to:
(a) Use violence or inflict injury upon the other person or any of the other person’s family, or upon the other person’s property, or threaten such violence or injury;
(b) Deprive the person of any tool, implement or clothing, or hinder the person in the use thereof; or
(c) Attempt to intimidate the person by threats or force.
2.  A person who violates the provisions of subsection 1 shall be punished:
(a) Where physical force or the immediate threat of physical force is used, for a category B felony by imprisonment in the state prison for a minimum term of not less than 1 year and a maximum term of not more than 6 years, and may be further punished by a fine of not more than $5,000.
(b) Where no physical force or immediate threat of physical force is used, for a misdemeanor.

It can also probably be read as an act of coercion under subsection 1(b) and/or 1(c).

Of course Geller and her ilk are the type that would defend a cross burning by calling it just a little campfire get together… So there’s that.
