Vintage Trouble is one of the many excellent bands to come out of the R&B revival movement, joining performers like Leon Bridges, The Alabama Shakes, Lianne LaHavas and many others, and here’s a great example of their stripped-down live show from Austin City Limits.

Typical gun-f*cking post in the resurgent #COSProject corner of twitter:

I really do believe our leaders have needed to, for many years, openly discuss the emotional duress of the changes in our culture.

Obama tried that with the clinging-to-guns-and-Bible thing, but he backed down. Should have stayed with it.

Important point about this meme is that there’s not a speck of actual fact in it. It’s totally, completely pulled-out-of-the-ass fabricated. Not even poorly interpreted data, just totally made of whole cloth.

So, if your Father-in-law sends you a ham every Christmas, and your Older Son doesn’t like ham, so you have to have Turkey, so you end up with a lot of both leftover, and it’s cold and rainy out, you make soup. In this case, Leek and Potato soup with ham and turkey. And carrots, which are way cheaper than leeks. And the leeks really cook down!

Yummy!

Another very intelligent person telling us that polls don’t matter (quoting 538 of course):

The More We Poll, the Less We Know

[…]

So what can they tell us? Not much.

Pollsters agree that at this point in the race, no poll nor group of polls can predict who will be the next president, or even who will be the party’s nominee. “Early surveys, even a month out, are not going to give people the prediction they’re looking for — particularly in primaries,” said Michael Dimock, president of the Pew Research Center and a political scientist who has conducted many polls in his time.

Who gets the most excited by polls? The candidates who lead them. It’s not a Donald Trump rally without the candidate trundling to the podium, crowing about the numbers showing him winning. But those polls do not predict a Trump victory. Here’s why:

The level of support Mr. Trump boasts about (currently, between 30 and 40 percent) is drawn from within the 25 percent of voters who identify themselves as Republicans, according to Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight, meaning that to secure the nomination he would have to broaden his appeal among Republicans beyond the slice he has — not easy, given the extremism he represents. When Mr. Trump was polling at about 30 percent, Mr. Silver estimated he was pulling between 6 and 8 percent of the American electorate, which he said was about “the same share of people who think the Apollo moon landings were faked.” Also, only a small fraction of those self-identified Republicans will vote.

[…]

So let me see if I get this right:

The guy who is polling 40% probably can’t win because he’s too extreme.

As if the next guy down is any less extreme. Am I supposed to believe that Cruz, who’s just as extreme, who is polling at less than half of Trump, is more likely to win? Even the nomination?

And it only goes down hill from there.

Who do these people think will win the GOP nomination?

The non-extreme Jeb! who doesn’t even make it above the noise level in the polls ???

Meanwhile, up in the great white north:

Religion central to Gianforte’s life, but not his campaign

Religion plays a central role in the life of Greg Gianforte, who is exploring a run for the Republican nomination for Montana governor in 2016, but it’s a topic that the Bozeman entrepreneur and philanthropist declines to speak about at this stage.

[…]

Most of the approximately $36 million the Gianforte family has donated through a private trust in the last decade has benefited Christian-based organizations, the AP found in a review of Gianforte Family Foundation tax disclosures. They include organizations in the U.S. and Africa that conduct research, teach, foster children and promote missionary work.

The philanthropy includes about $2.3 million in scholarships to help K-12 students afford tuition at private schools in Montana. It also includes hundreds of thousands of dollars to anti-abortion groups and more than $150,000 to organizations that promote creationism.

[…]

Will he become the future governor?

I used to repeat to myself the Nate Silver stuff the author(s) of the editorial cite; aka, “At the end of the day, not that many people really support Trump.” Basically as a way to make myself feel better.

Now, I recognize that as whistling past the graveyard. The GOP has proven, if anything, over the last 7 years that they will do absolutely anything to hold on to power; up to and including fanning unashamed bigotry.

As I said earlier, Americans in general are absolutely capable of electing a piece of shit like Trump to run the country, regardless of the idiotic, horrendous things he’s been spewing since summer.

And Republicans? Based on their one defender here, they probably would support a unapologetic religious fanatic, Klan member or a white supremacist if they thought they’d get the White House back

So, while acknowledging Nate Silver is a much smarter human then I’ll ever be, I think he’s full of shit on this. The only way Trump gets denied the POTUS nomination is if the GOP grows a spine at the convention and stand up to him.

Given their past history (I’m looking at you, 2012 GOP autopsy), I seriously fucking doubt it.

Your Cells. Their Research. Your Permission?

This often surprises people: Tissues from millions of Americans are used in research without their knowledge. These “clinical biospecimens” are leftovers from blood tests, biopsies and surgeries. If your identity is removed, scientists don’t have to ask your permission to use them. How people feel about this varies depending on everything from their relationship to their DNA to how they define life and death. Many bioethicists aren’t bothered by the research being done with those samples — without it we wouldn’t have some of our most important medical advances. What concerns them is that people don’t know they’re participating, or have a choice. This may be about to change.

If you haven’t read any of “his” (co-authored) books Orielly’s shitck is to hint at conspiracies without outright accusing anyone specifically. In the Patton book he basically is saying that either Wild Bill Donovan or the Soviets had him killed via a staged accident.

I found out why Texans need moar gunz, wild hogs!!!

Trappers either shoot the hogs in the pen or, if they’re hoping to sell them, back a truck up to the pen and load them in. Trying to handle the animals, which are aggressive, strong and quick, is something to avoid.

“The mama hogs, when she’s got babies, that’s one that you really got to worry about. They will take you down, and they don’t want to lick at you, either, like a puppy dog,” he said. “They’re fast as lightning.”

Those in the hog world share horror stories of facing the beasts. Summers said he once accidentally trapped himself in a pen with one and hurt his back while leaping over the fence.

“The wild hogs, they pop their jaws, they snap their teeth against each other,” he said. “It’s a distinctive sound. Once you hear it, you’ll never forget it.”

Dornak said he’s only had one close encounter with a feral hog, and it’s not a scenario he encourages anyone to replicate.

“At 2 o’clock in the morning, I was intoxicated and in flip-flops and wielding a shotgun,” he said. “I was showing off for the folks around the campfire and almost had my legs taken out by one.”

I am so hurt by his actions. Cosby violated a public trust. Not only did he climb to the highest pinnacle of success, he was LOVED by just about everyone who grew-up watching his shows, Jello commericals and comedy acts.

Of all the celebrities, we thought we could trust Cosby.

I’m glad my father passed away before all this came out. He really admired Cosby and this would have been devastating.

Cosby’s (yeah, I said trump originally - he’s everywhere these days, even in unrelated thoughts) lasting legacy will not be as a comic, but as a rapist and sexual predator who assaulted dozens of women.

Here’s the thing. Prosecutors had much of this evidence for years on end and did nothing with it. It took dozens of women to come forward before prosecutors decided to act.

K-/J-/Canto-/Mando-pop groups have a shelf life of maybe five years. As soon as the members get close to 30 (or get married), the groups generally fizzle out, or fresh faces are brought in to keep the brand alive.

The members of both these groups range in age from 20 to 25, for example.

I’m old, too, but setting aside the eye-candy aspects of these groups, the tunes are catchy enough to get stuck in my head. Basic pop tunes, but with some suggestiveness added. I suspect older Koreans’ English is not good enough to catch the double-entendre about “tasting me” in “Ice Cream Cake.”

I’m not surprised. The same is true for J-pop, as well. Having decent spoken English is key.

My Chinese students are fascinated by Korean actors and performers in general. They scorn the plastic surgery, while admiring the handsome (androgynous) men and pretty (girlish) women.

K-pop really took off. Over the years of living in Japan I was always astounded that singers really only needed to be cute—straight teeth, good singing voice unnecessary. Then Morning Musume came in and it started to change. Not long after, of course, South Korean producers took the whole thing to a new level.

They’ve created a product line, complete with merchandising and marketing, but I have to say the singing and dancing of these groups are really pretty good. They won’t be big hits in the USA, unless they come up with some suitable cross-cultural bubblegum hit. PSY’s Gangnam Style came close, but fizzled out pretty quick. And the Mando hit “Little Apple” (Xiao Pingguo) barely lasted a few weeks stateside as a novelty tune.

3. If the sample does not require your identity to be attached, then no further contact to you is required to be given.

Can’t wait to watch Texas turn into the Wild West v. 2.0 with the open carry craziness that they’ve sought. We’re going to watch more people killed - civilians killing civilians. Cops killing civilians. And if you’re a minority in Texas, watch how the open carry rules wont be applied equally, resulting in more stops, hassling, and confrontations that may well end in violence.

Watch too as the 3 percenters and sovereign citizens abuse the open carry and put others at risk. Watch for more accidental shootings (of selves and others).

Why? Because we’ve seen just how the application of law enforcement disproportionately hits minorities, and that the laws aren’t applied equally or fairly.

Texas open carry is a prime example of lawmakers passing a symbolic gesture without thinking about it.

“Carrying without a license is illegal, but there’s no clear way for police to investigate if the person does indeed have a license to open carry or not.”
……………
“Even trickier for police officers is what happens when a citizen is asked and refuses to show proof of an open-carry license. According to the Dallas Morning News, there is no penalty in the law for license holders who refuse to do so.”
……………
“What happens when an officer arrives on a scene of a shooting and observes multiple people with guns on their waists? he asked. How would an officer differentiate a suspect from a civilian? How do you control a crime scene when everyone has a weapon, and is convinced that they have a right to use it? At what point when detaining someone for a different crime altogether is an officer allowed to remove the suspect’s weapon?

None of these questions is addressed in the language of the law.”

re: #94 I Stand With Planned Parenthood

No prob.

I’d like the option to be informed. I’d like to know if there is information I could pass to my kid or future grandchildren.

I can speak to this - we use leftover tumor tissue from a variety of different cancers, as well as normal tissue. We try to determine whether a particular antigen is present on tumors, more than on normal tissues. We look at a lot of tumors, because we’re trying to determine percentages - what percent of tumors express?

Generally, it’s not what you can learn from one sample, but what you learn from dozens or hundreds of samples. Make it harder to get those samples - which would otherwise be autoclaved and dumped - and you make it harder for us to do our jobs.

In the end, it’s unlikely that we’d find something in a particular sample that could be of use to the person it came from. And trying to keep a log of the individual from whom each sample came, while maintaining that person’s privacy, and following what happens to that sample and what all is learned about it is a nightmarish complication, especially since samples are sometimes pooled.

Add in to that the the things one might learn may still be in the process of discovery. That is, suppose we have your sample, and we’re using it to research whether a particular gene is linked to a propensity for a particular disease. We may find that allele in your sample. Should we tell you? At this point it’s still hypothetical, and even if we find a correlation between the allele and the disease, there’s still no proof of causation. This is one reason why the “Personal Genome” places are limited in what they can tell you - the information isn’t solid enough to make telling the customer ethical.

It almost seems as if this horrific scenario was carefully planned.

I am only suggesting from here on out it will be all diminishing returns because I think a lot of his image is going to be changed and ruined.

I think he’d be better to get out now and tell everyone how hard it has been to try to be president and to get good people to work for you…and all you ever wanted to do was listen to God say you were the man for the job. The books will still sell, the speeches will still be paid for.

While I think there is a place for ‘cowboy doctoring’, I don’t know how to say that I think that’s what Carson was into without offending someone. Separating conjoined twins is out there on the edge of medicine. I feel for all the people involved, especially the twins themselves, but it wasn’t so long ago that there was a pair ordered by a court to be (unsuccessfully, as it turned out) separated. Carson wasn’t there, and separations are not all he did, but it is among his experiences to participate in unsuccessful separations.

Yup. That’s why I’m asking - because you can see fireworks on neighboring buildings too. If there were fireworks on the building, that could explain why the fire quickly spread throughout the exterior of the structure - and fireworks misfiring could also explain why the fire spread to interior spaces - breaking the exterior curtain wall.

I don’t agree with his attitude of “kill them all so they don’t come here” and how he felt he HAD to go there, but he did save a lot of lives. My opinion is all based on the film, I haven’t really looked at his background.

Anyway, despite Clint’s political leanings, he’s a good director and actor. Glad I gave it a chance.

Looking at the Dubai fire Twitter feed. twitter.com
The fire appears to have spread very, very quickly right up the tower, with upper floors fully involved before the intensity lower down had even begun to decline. This is either catastrophically bad construction and planning or a large scale arson. Very bad either way.

The derp is inevitable.

Never mind that fire doesn’t have to melt steel, it merely has to weaken it sufficiently that the load carried by the structure above it is no longer sufficiently supported. And with the WTC, you not only had fire for more than an hour fed by jet fuel and other combustibles, but you had a chimney effect plus damage to key structural members throughout the affect floors where the planes impacted. The towers also did their jobs, as many of those below the impact floors were able to escape. The problem was that the towers weren’t designed with sufficient protection to the emergency stairways, so they were cut off by the plane impacts, preventing nearly all those above the impact floors from escaping.

The fire I was thinking of was of the Torch Skyscraper that happened in February.

Are you noticing a pattern?

Fires aren’t supposed to just easily zip up the side of a building like that. That’s the classic sign of a strong chimney effect at play, and it means the fire found an uninterrupted vertical space to vent, one containing flammable materials and poor firewalls, allowing fire to spread. That’s why stairwells have fire doors and elevator shafts are supposed to be void of virtually anything that can burn.

Seeing how the “visiting” workers were treated, and the speed in which all this went up makes me think corners were cut that will only be seen when things go wrong. A building of the magnitude that is now a Roman candle should never happen at the speed in which it did. China had a few just fall over a while back.

MSNBC showing current images, lot of smoke, not a lot of large visible flames as earlier.

Saw a small fireball, at same time person on phone interview says he heard a small explosion from generally ground/lower building area (which corresponds with images I saw)
Likely common combustibles from businesses/restaurants in the building (guess)

I don’t know what the seismic/building codes are in Dubai, but SOM was the architectural firm of record. You can believe that they wouldn’t want their name associated with a structure that would crack and fail in those circumstances, or go up like a match either. Not when they’ve learned what to avoid after the WTC and how to better protect against fire and contain damage to give people more time to escape the damage area and the building altogether.

They claim to have engineered the structure to deal with wind loads. There’s no mention of seismic loads though.

Another one for my aviation “nope” file. Must have been a hell of a ride though. ZEL (zero length launch) was a 1950s concept for blasting a jet fighter off a truck trailer. It used large solid fuel booster rockets that had been developed for the Snark cruise missile program. It worked well enough but was something of a solution looking for a problem since the planes still needed a place to land. The Soviets had something similar with MiG-17s and 19s.

As I’m on vacation, I’ve been avoiding electronics of all kinds.

Someone had to tell me today was New Year’s Eve.

Such things just don’t matter when you are in Paradise.

Or as I like to point out….Look at the boiling cauldron of Hell Colorado has become since cannabis became….Nevermind…

I particularly enjoy hearing about marijuana job fairs, along with the sad dilemma of what to do about those pesky tax revenues that exceeded expectations.

We went for a long walk from the hotel down to South Street, with me snapping pics all along the way. I saw this one in a shop window and thought of you guys…

Happy New Year to Lizard Nation.

re: #364 b.d.

So Ted Cruz is a soccer player/fan, I bet his wingnut fans would have something to say about that,

This is a different Ted Cruz. There has been a change.

It should be legal in every form in every state. Period. The law against it is wrong and has been since it was enacted. I could go on for about a month on this.

Bet he didn’t chew the scenery like Oliver Reed. And that whiny, nasal voice of his, as Biww Soikes? Yeesh.

The former classmate I heard interviewed said he didn’t really care what the part was as long as he could be center stage. Sounds about right.

Well, I’m not terribly fond of more than a few of his supporters, but I do like the light Sanders has been shining on economic issues so that even when Hillary becomes the nominee they won’t be able to sweep them completely under the rug. That’s done more good for the socialist cause than anything since the last time Deb’s ran.

So I got a solicitation for funds from The Democratic Socialists of America today to help Bernies campaign with the promise of a kewl button for donations today. What the heck, if it keeps him in a bit longer, so much the better.

And besides, perhaps my son will be able to sell this to someone for silly money someday…

Be sure to turn it over and turn off the chip hidden in the curve of the back inner edge. The commies may be listening.

Yep, agree on that. Marijuana should be legal, and hemp should be a standard cash crop that you can grow outdoors. I don’t expect common sense to prevail anytime soon, but commercial interest may help influence the debate.

I like football, I really do, but doesn’t it seem like instead of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves we have The Playoff 6 and the 35(!) Meaningless Bowls? 41 bowl games this year? SMH.

I was down on South Street with my brother and niece just after Christmas to eat at a German restaurant. Good beer to be had.

There’s about 10 thousand reasons hemp has been cultivated since the dawn of time.

Here’s what Cruz’s freshman roommate from Princeton says about him:

I would rather have anybody else be the president of the United States. Anyone. I would rather pick somebody from the phone book.

And, you know, I want to be clear, because Ted Cruz is a nightmare of a human being. I have plenty of problems with his politics, but truthfully his personality is so awful that 99 percent of why I hate him is just his personality. If he agreed with me on every issue, I would hate him only one percent less.

I love that! It’s pretty much as I imagined. Can you imagine living with that narcissistic, sanctimonious blowhard for an entire school year?
