Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

God put contradictions in the Bible to ‘weed out’ the atheists

Young Earth creationism evangelist Kent Hovind asserted this week that God had purposefully put contradictions in the Bible to “weed out” non-believers.

In a YouTube video posted on Monday, the Christian fundamentalist responds to a follower who is troubled by a contradiction in the book of Acts.

“If I was God,” Hovind explains, “I would write the book in such a way that those who don’t want to believe in me anyway would think they found something. ‘Aha, here’s why I don’t believe.’”

Hovind then goes on to say

that he made a choice to “believe the Bible until it’s proven wrong.”

, which of course can never happen because he knows that would be a trick.

An all knowing god wouldn’t need to weed them out using trickery. Hovind’s just grasping at straws.

Ha. That video of him was posted here earlier this week. Good to see he may get to find out what government benefits are for. Although, I’m sure he’d turn down anything like unemployment and the like.

It might seem a surprise that Carson apparently out fundraised Cruz in the 4th quarter $23 million to $20 million…but we learned last month that Carson spent nearly 75% of his 3rd haul on professional fundraising, so it would have been a bigger surprise if Carson hadn’t hit it big.

When I was a very little kid, and not yet over religion, it occurred to me that Christianity is meant to select for credulity. “Why would a god want to save people who don’t ask questions, and send critical thinkers who don’t believe in him to hell?” was the question that destroyed my belief in religion, and eventually in the supernatural entirely.

I just spent 18 hours changing radio stations while driving (yes, I could have listened to my iPod, but I’m an idiot like that). If there is a war on Christians, you wouldn’t know it from a scan of our airwaves. Jesus F’ing Christ. My favorite was a brief blip from a sermon as I punched the button: “I couldn’t find my pry bar. So I said a little prayer and I asked God to help me find my pry bar. And when I opened my eyes and turned around, there it was! My pry bar was on top of the garbage can….” [punches button; gets Christian rock; punches button again, searches in vain for Imam on the radio]

My dad has thankfully switched to CNN from Fox. I don’t know if that’s just for my sake, and my brother’s, but it’s a welcome change. They may not be as partisan, but they are just as hackish, and are probably dumber on the whole.

They were just discussing the building fire in Dubai a bit ago and the genius anchorperson asked some expert how likely it would be that they would discover that the fire had originated inside the building, as opposed to what, I don’t know.

I was a charter subscriber to XM when it launched back in 2002. Their original satellites were called Rock and Roll. XM’s radio technology is much better than Sirius’s in that XM can change the channel numbers but you don’t lose your presets-Sirius’s radios don’t do that (recently XM moved BBC World Service from 118 to 120-the channel number changed, but the preset stuck.)

He said he has a friend who raises alpacas who has the same problem. I gave him my name, number, and email address and told him I’d take any fleeces next time he shears and to please call me. Nope, definitely not dying. There are some things that are still much simpler with jQuery, e.g. Ajax. But some of the newer Javascript (really ECMAScript) functions like querySelectorAll() bring a lot of the same jQuery functionality to native Javascript.

I haven’t tried learning the drop spindle yet because I was working on my malacate skills since that’s what I do when I’m volunteering and I use the spinning wheel for speed. The stuff I’ve seen done on the drop spindle is really fine and I’m making thicker yarn for weaving rugs.

Using 3D Print Technology to Restore a Child’s Nose

For the first time in the United States, a patient has undergone a complex and intricate series of surgical procedures to implant a fully functional, three-dimensional (3D) printed “model” of a human nose. New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai surgeons Tal Dagan, MD, Associate Adjunct Surgeon, and Grigoriy Mashkevich, MD, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology, Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, performed the operations on Dallan Jennet, a 14-year-old boy from the Marshall Islands. Dallan’s face was disfigured at the age of 9 after he fell onto a live power line, severely burning his entire face and losing his nose.

“The procedure is akin to a ‘nose transplant’ in that we were able to replace the nose with a functional implant,” says lead physician Dr. Dagan. “This procedure may be a breakthrough in facial reconstruction because the patient will never have to deal with the standard issues of transplantation, such as tissue rejection or a lifetime of immunosuppressive therapies.”

Dallan flew halfway around the world to New York City for the opportunity to live a normal life with the help of Canvasback Missions, Inc., a nonprofit organization that brings health care and health education to the Pacific Islands. Treatment began in early 2015 in the Marshall Islands, where the patient underwent the first of five surgeries. Expanders were inserted under the remaining skin of his nose, creating space under his skin for the actual reconstruction, which would be performed at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

I see a shiny new loom. I don’t know if I’d like that style, though. It’s different than mine for sure.

Shiny loom is a Swedish-style one. I was going to say Glimåkra, but the beater doesn’t look quite right. Anyway, very different from a Jack loom, but very versatile and better for some things. Jack looms are better for others.

If the harnesses are pushed up from the bottom it is a jack loom, if they hang from a superstructure it is probably a counterbalance or countermarch loom, but it is possible for it to be a jack loom (like a Harrisville.) Some people will fight to the death over which is better. I solved the problem by having one of each.

Happy New Year to LGF from out in the central Texas countryside, away from the usual New Year’s plunging gunfire in Houston.

I just took a walk into the back of the property and saw a lot of tracks in the mud. I thought at first from the size that the neighbor’s cows had gotten through the fence again, but the tracks were made by cloven hooves. Now I’m trying to find out how big wild hogs are based on their prints. Does anyone here know what size hog leaves a print six inches long?

re: #130 Sionainn

I’ve only just learned how to warp my loom. I have no idea what I’m looking at!

Drawlooms give you a lot of patterning possibilities. There are 2 sets of shafts.

The ones in the front give the weave structure (usually satin, but it can be twill) and the key is that it has to be 1 warp thread up and minimally 3 threads, but more commonly 4, 5, 6 or 7 threads down, progressing through however many warp threads you have so that it is a balanced weave, but you see mostly warp on one side and mostly weft on the other.

The second set of shafts, in conjunction with special long-eye heddles on the front shafts, let you change which groups of warp threads weave warp faced as opposed to weft faced. It is how you get the patterning woven into damask linen tablecloths and the like.

This is a test piece I’m doing-it is 10/2 cotton, so not particularly fine and I’m paying no attention to minor errors, or the selvedges. It is the lower half of a bird in flight, as in not yet complete, but will let you see what it produces.

All you ever needed to know about Heidi Cruz. We’re going to need to rename New Year’s Eve to All Grifter’s Eve.

Heidi: worried sick

Ted needs your help.

Ted is under an all-out assault on his campaign, his values, and even him personally. Attacks are coming from all sides — Republican and Democrat — and of course the liberal media.

Ted won’t tell you this but I will — please stop what you are doing and read below.

Here is the situation, and it worries me:

1) We just received inside information that Iowa Super PACs — funded by Republicans — are planning to spend millions attacking Ted’s policy and character.

2) Hillary is personally attacking Ted’s strong stand for American families. She openly speaks of her distain for Ted’s values and is attacking him in front of millions online.

3) The media is getting personal. The Washington Post published a despicable attack on my children. Both Ted and I are determined to protect our children from their shameless attacks.

4) We now have only 18 hours left before the media starts their full scale “exploration” into our campaign finances. Thumbing through thousands of financial papers to find any weakness and mislead Americans.

Pete, I don’t know any other man who is prepared to fight these political assaults, stand up to the personal attacks, and still provide a positive vision for America.

I admit I’m biased, but Ted is the man we need to restore America.

One more thing: every dollar, every prayer and word of encouragement means the world to Ted and me.

Today is the final day of 2015, and Ted could sure use your support right now more than ever.

You see, he’s confided in me that he must raise another $349,394 dollars before midnight tonight — less than 18 hours from now.

That is a big shortfall.

I know there is no way you — or any one person — can cover that entire balance, but if you could just make one last 2015 Stop-Gap donation, both Ted and I would be in your debt.

If we close the books and Ted is still short, it could mean the difference between winning and losing this campaign.

I know it’s a lot to ask, but can Ted and I count on you one last time in 2015?

Warmly,
Heidi Cruz

And no, I don’t know who Pete is.

Evening Lizards. My New Years Eve will consist of sitting with my dog in my lap, reading a good book, and trying not to worry about my oldest who is in the downswing of his bipolar cycle and really needs to go to the hospital and get regulated, because he’s off his meds.

Sounds good and sending best wishes towards your oldest.

It’s not just the repugs. I’ve been getting them from the Dems as well. The reason is probably end of the year = end of tax season and they (and you) have to report any income/donations on tax reports.

Article makes no reference to the “transparent aluminum” of Star Trek fame, nor China’s dominance of the indium market. Indium is what makes current glass touchscreens work. A cheaper alternative would put a dent in the indium markets.

I just remembered that several musician friends of mine who live in and around the Catskills were extras in The Gig, and they still talk about much fun it was.

Getting hazy outside from all the powder smoke, the street lights all have visible halos…

His politics were not to my liking, but he apparently was a decent guy.

That’s the most important thing one can say about a person, innit?

Mrs Cranky and I went to see the new Star Wars in 3D. Don’t go to the theater much, but it was worth seeing on a large screen in 3D. Nice dinner and then a quiet night at home with the dogs, some snacks and a bottle of wine.

May the new year bring good things to all the lizards and their loved ones. We’re thinking we may need to get Netflix again to maintain our sanity once the political ads start though. ;)

Happy New Year to all and stay safe!

You may have heard about the YUUUGE crowd of teenagers that descended on a suburban shopping mall near Louisville, KY. The mall has announced temporary restrictions on teens entering the mall on weekends. Two of my Facebook friends posted the same link, one a millennial and the other my former sister-in-law. The comments from each are polar opposites.

Youngsters pointed out no one was harmed, nothing got broken, nothing got stolen, no shots fired. They also noted the so-called adults supporting the policy acted like THEY never did anything remotely crazy as kids.

From the oldster thread, there were these two gems:

And well it SHOULD be… So-called parents are going to have to find another means of ‘day-care’ for the brats.

Children under 18 should never be allowed in the mall alone they are minors and should be accompanied by an adult. Sick and tired of the ridiculousness of our society today!

I’ll be 60 soon, but I agree with the youngsters. Clearly the woman making the last remark has never been a mother to a teenager, too.

RIP Wayne Rogers…

rawstory.com

So Wayne Rogers will be missing from the “stars who died this year list” the same way that the 2004 Tsunami missed the important stories of 2004 list because it happened in the last week of the year?

I enjoyed his acting and am sorry for his loved ones. 82 is a good run, I’ll sign up for that right here and now.

I’m hoping to hit the century mark, but we’ll see. It’s hard to imagine what the world will be like in another 5 years, much less 40 (for me). So, I want to watch as it happens.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

God put contradictions in the Bible to ‘weed out’ the atheists

rawstory.com

Hovind then goes on to say

, which of course can never happen because he knows that would be a trick.

As usual, Raw Story’s headline distorts what “the bad guy” is saying. A casual reader will go away with the impression that Hovind accepts that there are contradictions in the Bible, which he of course doesn’t.
