True. But my connections are with Japan.

ETA: my DW’s uncle sent us New Year place settings with the three monkeys. He sent it express so that it would be here tonight so that we could have our “toshi-koshi soba” etc. on the celebratory place mats. I know that the rest of east Asia honors the lunar calendar, but Japan joined the West since the 1870s in making the new year according to the solar calendar.

The residential streets in Lubbock are still almost impassable in many areas, thanks to inaction by the city, but the state-maintained highways are clear. My daughter left for Kansas this afternoon and I will escape back to Mineral Wells and my conspiracy compound in the morning. Our hosts and their neighbors have been wonderful.
Others here are not so wonderful, as usual.
I would like to leave with an insider tip for the ultraconservative elements of the local business community: If you resent federal and state bureaucrats “interfering” in your business and oppressing your sacred entrepreneurial prerogatives, try OBEYING THE LAW and DOING THE RIGHT THING. You would be amazed at how these simple business habits will keep the Department of Labor, OSHA, and the Texas Workforce Commission out of your face and your books.

Happy New Year to all of the Lizardfolk! Still relatively quiet here in the southern end of the Denver metroplex — only a few bangs and fizzes so far, at 10:45 p.m. Current temp is 12F, supposed to drop to 5 or 6, which is much better than the northwest corner of the state where they’re predicting -27 for the low. (Stay warm, Teleskiguy!)

Teenager has fallen asleep, not surprising since he was at a sleepover last night and got the expected amount of sleep for a reunion of three 17-year-old (male) video gamers. He says to wake him up at midnight, will see if it works. The 91-year-old mother has gone to bed and does NOT want to be woken up for the ball drop — says she was at Times Square for New Years’ 1953 and that was plenty. So it’s probably just going to be me and the spouse and some peppermint schnapps to celebrate another trip around the sun.

There’s got to be something better to watch than imitation Dick Clark’s New Years with idiot Jenny McCarthy…

Here is an article written after the Dubai Torch tower fire that discusses the fire risk from the composite (aluminum sandwiched polyurethane) panels used on many buildings there.

m.thenational.ae

Dubai has changed its building code to ban them now and is making some existing buildings install upgrades to stop fire spread on the exterior.

Also talks to insurance people who are saying they will no longer insure buildings with more than 50% of their skin made from composite panels.

I was just going through some old posts on another forum, and I ran across hand-wringing from wingnuts about when Ramadi fell, and how it was “proof” that the administration’s effort to degrade ISIS were a “failure” and how it was yet more evidence that the President didn’t take ISIS “seriously.”

What’s more hilarious is that I haven’t seen any of those same wingnuts commenting on the story the other day that Iraqi forces have retaken Ramadi and credited the US air campaign for weakening ISIS to the point that they could throw them (with the exception of small pockets of resistance) out of the city.

I don’t know, but I remember when killing off leaders of Al-Q was an event worth crowing about amongst wingnuts. You know, before that black guy took up residence in the White House, and suddenly bombing terrorists wasn’t sufficiently macho enough, we need carpet bombing and soldiers on the ground (again).

90
Alyosha  Jan 1, 2016 • 1:37:03am

re: #87 Targetpractice

It would mean having to give some credit to this particular Commander-in-Chief’s regional strategy of few boots on the ground, air support and local consultation.
Pessimists can also say it might have been accomplished sooner with a ground invasion which might have occurred if not for that pesky lapse of the SOFA with the Iraqi government. Another thing which the right wing have used retroactively to bash the president.
It’s always something.

WN: *crickets*

I’ve had the discussion over and over again with wingnuts and found two different schools of thought:

The first goes that the Iraq government didn’t really mean to throw us out, they were just playing the diplomatic equivalent of “hard to get.” They were willing to let us stay and give our soldiers immunity, they were just looking for the right price. But the President wouldn’t negotiate with them and give them what they wanted, so it’s his fault for not being sufficiently dedicated to the negotiations. And if you point out to those making that argument that Bush spent a year negotiating the last SOFA and he failed to do better than 2 year extension, they go quiet.

The other school says basically what Alyosha just stated: Iraq was “ours,” that the Bush admin built clauses into the SOFA that would have allowed us to ignore the withdrawal date, and thus the President “abandoned” Iraq rather than fighting for what we’d “won.” The problem is that the clauses they talk about say (upon further inspection) that any decision to stay past the withdrawal date has to be mutual and based upon an active threat to Iraq’s security and sovereignty. And any wingnut who will stand up and insist that ISIS was such a threat in 2011 that we could have convinced the Iraqi people to accept an indefinite stay should be tested for mind-altering drugs and/or dementia.

Finished watching Childhood’s End.

It was ok. Parts I liked. The lead actor (the farmer) I found about as unlikable as he was in the atrocious Under the Dome. Other than that I think the casting was ok.

It gets really mixed reviews. Clarke fans are aghast, or so it appears.

I’m glad that SyFy is finally producing more shows that are not intended for a juvenile audience.

I find the way the Overmind was portrayed to be reminiscent of a similar character in the Doctor Who series The Key to Time.

re: #100 ausador

The Trump campaign has this idea of itself which appeals directly to the sensation that the guys pulling the strings (the Establishment) do not want him to win.

No revelation there.

The ‘back’, then, is everywhere. No one believes anything which doesn’t conform to pre-existing suppositions.
We are at Alex Jones levels of presuppositionalism.
There will ever be a state of conspiracy.
No one is exempt. But some are more suspect than others.

Holy mother-fuckin’ shit.

102
Alyosha  Jan 1, 2016 • 6:14:02am

Has anyone else noted how maternal the Trump message has become?

Can’t remember which particular rally it was but the tone and thrust was almost identical.

1. Suggest vague problem. Eg. Unemployment, general societal malaise.

2. Attack current administration. No specifics. Appeal to general feelings of torpor that come with being the minority party.

3. Suggest solution that even Luntz focus-groups suppress because it comes out all ‘Nazi-y’.

4. Receive applause.

5. Suggest that things will become even worse due to the current PC climate, which ignores your inherently backward-ass worldview.

6. Repeat a well-worn phrase which uses fear as a multiplier and will solve the issue, and all issues, once and for all while using reassuring language which resembles in force the words that encourage using potty.

i.e. ‘They are overrunning us right now, but Mummy will build a Wall, okay baby, and don’t you doubt it for a second, honey. It’ll be so tall, you shouldn’t even worry about it. Just keep loving me and it’ll be alright.’

Interesting that the Wall is something he returns to when he goes off on a tangent and loses the crowd. Wakes them up. Brings them right back.

The tone is always bombastic, but at base it is weirdly maternal : ‘I won’t ever let them hurt you’ while ramping up the threat.

Trump’s supporters are essentially frightened children. It’s not at all surprising he adopts such a parental tone when he speaks to them.

Turns out nobody quite knows why, the graphs with the article are clear enough though. Combination of a lot of stuff apparently…

[Embedded content]

I suspect the reason the spike occurs between Christmas and New Years is because of wanting to be with family and ignoring signs that you should go to the emergency room. As for the overall increase in the winter, I do think, contrary to what the article says, it is because of the cold. The South may be warmer than the North, but 1) southerners are not nearly as prepared to deal with the cold, and 2) the South has more poor and a lower rate of medical coverage than the North.

R.I.P. Wayne Rogers

Wayne Rogers, Trapper John on ‘M.A.S.H.,’ dies at 82

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Wayne Rogers, whose Trapper John McIntyre alongside Alan Alda’s Hawkeye Pierce brought mischief, martinis and meatball surgery to the masses in the 1970s every week on “M.A.S.H.,” has died.

The actor was surrounded by family when he died Thursday in Los Angeles of complications from pneumonia at age 82, his publicist and longtime friend Rona Menashe told The Associated Press.

Rogers’ army surgeon Trapper John was one of the most beloved characters - and half of one of the most beloved duos - in TV history, despite the actor’s appearing in only the first three of the show’s 11 seasons on CBS.

WN: We puiied out too soon!

Me: We pulled out on the date Bush agreed to.

WN: Obama could have gotten it extended!

Me: How could he do that when the Iraqi government wanted us out? Bush had to negotiate for months to allow us to stay as long as we did and almost didn’t succeed.

WN: *crickets*

The best answer to that is: “It’s complicated.” Al-Malaki was at one point willing to bring an SOF forwards but right before he planned to do so Wikileaks released documents that made it look like the US had covered up heavy civilian casualties from an airstrike. We hadn’t done so, and we proved we didn’t in fairly short order, but not short enough to prevent a hue and cry being raised in Iraq that prevented the SOF from being acted on.

It’s important to remember that the root of (honest) Iraqi objections to the SOF was over its requiring American military personnel to be tried only in US courts. The lie Wikileaks told with its dishonest document release (and dishonest it clearly was) stoked Iraqi fears of Americans killing Iraqis are then facing no consequences for having done so.

It was not until the fall of Mosul in the summer of 2014 that those fears were finally put aside, not allayed so much as outweighed by the overwhelming threat of Daesh.

re: #97 ausador

There are already Dubai tower fire truther videos up on YouTube. :(

Same old shit “crisis actors!” “Google time stamps on stories before the fire started!” etc, etc…

My question to them is why? Nobody got killed, it wasn’t claimed to be terrorism, politics aren’t involved, so why burn the building on purpose?

Sigh…idjits

The fire was set so Donald Trump could lambast Dubai for poor construction standards and tout his own expertise in hotel construction. More fires and incidents will occur, especially in those tower hotels owned by people who purchased a speaking engagement by Bill Clinton. Thus Trump will convince America that the Clintons are ea jinx who will bring the nation bad luck, thus ensuring his election as president.

The final stage of Trump’s plan will happen after his inauguration, when he will claim all of the tower hotels in the UAE and Saudi Arabia are “firetrap symbols of uppity Islam”. All be destroyed by cruise missiles with the tower in Mecca deliberately dropped onto the Grand Mosque there. Then will sweep aside all federal obstacles to enable his old children to build the world’s tallest hotel tower in the US, thus restoring America to its rightful position of dominance.

Wondering myself, certainly tens of millions in damage. Plus the whole exterior should be stripped and retrofitted to remove the flammable insulation.

It probably took enough structural damage to be condemned.

So it probably hangs around as an unoccupy-able eyesore for a decade or so before someone bites the cost of tearing it down in order to reuse the space.

Happy New Year to Lizards everywhere!

Here’s hoping for a more sane 2016, in spite of of the presidential campaigns of the various GOP campaign trying to “out tuff” their opponents, with ever heightened rhetoric.

Here’s hoping we can find a way to value the lives of all our citizens equally, and the law will back us up.

And here’s hoping the retaking of Ramadi is just the beginning, and that the Iraq central government can and will find a way to entice the Sunni buy in, needed to allow real and lasting stability. It would be so encouraging, to see a real viable model to stopping the carnage. That would make for such a great New Year, to see progress.

And here’s hoping………..well, if we could just get some of that, it would be a great year.

Think Progress had a great bit on the predictions of the Right for 2016 if Obama were to be reelected in 2012. They’re so far off the mark, it’s amazing. Gas headed for $10 a gallon, unemployment >8%, stock market crashed, and the entire US economy collapsing.

None of which, obviously, has come to pass. But he has a year yet, and maybe all our guns will be taken and we’ll all be in FEMA camps after he crowns himself President For Life.

Or maybe we’ll have another pretty good year, while the Right screams that a Hillary Clinton Administration will be like another Obama Administration, and while their adherents faint from the horror, the rest of us will say, “Hey, that sounds pretty good!”

The Flying Spaghetti Monster Lives

While doing routine maintenance on an oil well off the coast of Angola, a team from BP spotted a—oh god, what is that? They nicknamed the 4,000-foot-deep creature the “flying spaghetti monster,” after the deity.

Remote operated underwater vehicles working for offshore oil and gas companies routinely come across interesting specimens like this, and pass their footage along to deep sea research groups. The National Oceanography Centre in Great Britain and the SERPENT Project reviewed the footage, and suggested the workers likely encountered a siphonophore, which belong to a group of aquatic animals including jellyfish. May it float peacefully away from the rest of us, RAmen.

Although these dire economic predictions have proven false, it doesn’t mean there aren’t real, persistent problems with the U.S. economy. Most critically, wage growth for American workers remains stagnant. That’s why, although many economic indicators are strong, a lot of Americans aren’t yet feeling the impact.

Guess who has a vested interest in keeping wages low…

Does anyone know if LGF subscriptions paid via PayPal will renew automatically? I just assumed they do, however mine hasn’t (it’s due to renew today).

Yes they do, mine auto-renewed 2 weeks ago.

Judd Legum watched the Fox New Year’s Eve TRUMP EXTRAVAGANZA so you didn’t have to—it is hilarious. A few examples:

9:17: We now move to the substantive portion of the evening and are joined by astrologer Susan Miller.

9:55: Unfortunately, it’s clear now that Waters, Kennedy and Timpf have run out of people to interview and things to say. But they have five minutes left. So they riff. This is the worst part.

10:26: I’m running out of steam. I take a break to eat an ice cream sandwich. I feel better.

11:41: Fake interview with a National Guard member. It’s actually just a ruse so he can propose. She says yes. It’s kind of sweet. I’m in an emotionally vulnerable state.

11:52: TRUMP IS HERE! “All of America is watching you and your beautiful family,” Guilfoyle says. This is not true. I personally know many people who are not watching.

(10 Seconds)
Bolling realizes there is no time and recalibrates. “Stay with us we’ll get back to you right after the ball drops,” he pleads.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
It’s now 2016 and Trump didn’t get to count. No matter, he starts counting anyway.
“Five, four, three, two, one.”

In “Them” they just declared martial law in Los Angeles via a radio and TV broadcast. I was just thinking how an announcement declaring martial law in LA on the basis of the invasion by a nest of giant ants would be taken if it was done today.

Oh, I don’t know. People believed the Iraq WMD.

I think so, but I frequently order stuff from Amazon and I rarely watch TV or go to the movies, so I like the videos. There’s free streaming music too, if that’s important to you.

Depends on how much you buy from them throughout the year. The free 2 day shipping on most items is very convenient. I’ve had stuff show up the next day, and even on Sundays. You’ll quickly get tired of the video selections though, which aren’t rotated out very often.

I bought my Dad an Echo for Christmas and it seems like that might make Prime a little more useful through the Prime music library. I haven’t used the Kindle lending library either, so that would extend the value for someone who reads a lot of ebooks.

Yes.

Great original shows and access to many network series. Tons of available free music, which you can access on your phone too via an app. Free two day shipping (or same day depending on where you live). I looked high an low for a simple grapefruit knife, gave up, ordered a $2.36(?) one off of Amazon and it was sent via 2nd Day for free.

It is for me. I’m still getting used to them actually delivering items on Sundays!

But when it comes to Amazon Fresh, I give that a big thumbs down. I tried ordering groceries through them 3 times and each time they bungled the orders, delivering things I didn’t order, yet charging me for what I actually ordered.

Yes. I just checked and I placed 53 orders last year. That works out to less than $2/order for shipping, and some of that stuff was heavy. Plus the TV and stuff. And sending things to my mother. You know. Stuff.

Exactly. And they carry such a wide variety of stuff now, much of it at better prices than you can get in brick & mortar stores. That, and even when their prices are slightly higher than other online stores (like certain art supplies from DickBlick, whose prices have gone up this year), it still works out cheaper for me because of the free shipping. I order things like bulk dry cat food & other dry foods on a regular basis.

The monthly choice of one of the free Kindle First books is a nice touch too.

Yeah, i didn’t include my Kindle stuff either. Even if I didn’t buy a single additional book this year I doubt I could read all the stuff I already purchased in the next 12 months. They know me too well—dangle something from my wish lists or “saved for later” items in front of me at a significant discount, and I’ll bite 90% of the time.

My son just sold last semester’s textbooks to Amazon. He’s real happy because he got a lot more than he was offered elsewhere, and he’s fine with payment being in the form of an Amazon gift card as he buys lots of stuff from them.

It was win-win for both—he got a much better deal and Amazon knows he’s going to spend every penny of it with them. They’re smart, they know how to keep customers happy while keeping the money flowing in.

Today’s paranoid (or is it?) question: now that Iran’s delivered all most of their enriched uranium to Russia… do we need to worry that maybe Russia has plans for it? Possibly their own enrichment facilities have degraded due to decades of poor maintenance, or some of their stockpiles were stolen, and this is something they need for reasons we should find alarming.

First and foremost, let me add my best wishes to all Lizards for a healthy and happy 2016: at the irreducible least, may it be no worse than 2015….

re: #193 darthstar

I’m guessing these NSA “revelations” are probably not, in the end, going to be much of any public issue: Israel’s Netanyahu’s efforts to scupper the Iran nuclear deal were much too overt and too obvious (and, more importantly, blatantly unsuccessful) for “evidence” of the influence [certain domestic factions and] Israel brought to bear to be much in the way of “news”. Pushing the issue probably won’t produce any positives outcomes: First, the RWNM will (as I believe they have already started to do) likely focus on promoting screaming outraged butthurt over the fact that the NSA was “spying” on Congresscritters; which deflection is, only too sadly, likely to succeed. Secondly, there is a nontrivial segment of the electorate (in both parties) who don’t really view Israel as a “foreign country” - stirring that pot isn’t likely to accomplish much (save a tempest of Godwin’s-Law nonsense).

Well we made it through 2015.
Happy New Year
Hope that 2016 will be better than 2015 was.

2015 really wasn’t that bad a year, despite the howling of the rightwing. The economy continued to generate lots of new jobs while the price of gasoline sank to $2.00 a gallon (its a $1.89 where I live), The President achieved diplomatic coups with the Iran nuclear deal, the Paris Climate accord and improving relations with Cuba, marriage equality came to the entire nation, the ACA survived another Supreme Court challenge and we got new controls on carbon emissions, and Daesh has been in steady retreat capped by the recovery of Ramadi by the Iraqi army, which finally seems to be a capable fighting force. The single most important thing we can do this year to keep the momentum moving forward is elect a Democrat President and recover control of the Senate.

Since the Russians already have roughly 10,000 nuclear warheads, I’m not too worried about the uranium for a few more. And if they couldn’t lose any of their stockpile to theft over the 25 years since the USSR went out of business, it’s probably not that likely to be a concern.

Due to the strategic arms limitation treaties both the USA and Russia decommissioned a large number of existing warheads. We both ended up with large stockpiles of weapons grade uranium and plutonium that are already on the “shelf”. Irans 20% enriched uranium really is no use to them, they already had what they need to build more nukes if they wanted to anyway.
