4Number four on our list is our post on the white supremacist group Council of Conservative Citizens, who took down their entire website briefly following the terrible massacre at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, when it was revealed they had directly inspired shooter Dylann Roof with their racist propaganda: After the Discovery of Dylann Roof’s Website, the Council of Conservative Citizens Is Running Scared.

5In fifth place, our piece about Donald Trump’s delusional xenophobic immigration policy, and its multiple citations of far-right website Breitbart “News:” Donald Trump Has Released an Immigration Policy Plan and It’s Completely Insane.

6The number 6 spot goes to this post on a CNN interview with supporters of Donald Trump, in which they made it very clear they simply do not care that Trump lies like a rug: CNN Interviews Trump Supporters - They Don’t Care That He’s Lying.

7There were a huge number of fake outrages coming out of the right wing in 2015, and during the uproar following Dylann Roof’s attack on AME Church and his attraction to the Confederate flag, the far right blog “Conservative Treehouse” tried to counter-attack what they saw as a left wing agenda by posting a faked photo of Hillary Clinton with a Confederate flag (and their post is still up with no correction): Right Wingers Circulate Photoshop Fake of Young Hillary Clinton With a Confederate Flag.

8Our eighth most popular post contained a video clip of a Donald Trump rally in which a bigoted supporter asked him a now-infamous question: Video: Audience Member Asks Trump: “We Have a Problem… It’s Called ‘Muslims.’ When Can We Get Rid of ‘Em?”

9Number 9 on our list was this piece about Operation Rescue president Troy Newman, who also serves on the board of anti-choice propaganda group Center for Medical Progress, and is on record taking the virulent ideology of these people to its logical conclusion: Board Member of Right Wing Group That Made Planned Parenthood Video Believes Murdering Doctors Is “Justifiable”.

10You just knew crazed litigious cyberstalker Chuck C. Johnson would be on this list, didn’t you? He grabs the number 10 spot (although number 2 might have been more appropriate), with our post about one of his many attempts to sneak back onto Twitter after being permanently suspended from the social media site: Chuck C. Well, Goldie, one of the originators of UK Jungle/Drum ‘n’ Bass has received a CBE in todays New Year’s honours!

So, in celebration, here’s the opening (and title) track from his debut album “Timeless” in 1995. This 21 minute track (! Considering this is an early UK Jungle track, this is amazingly prog.) one was the major reason I bought my first CD player.

My New years resolution: Pick up my guitar every day and play for at least 15 minutes.

Backstory: About 10 years ago due to a shoulder injury and surgery I couldn’t play guitar for about a year. Just as I was starting to heal enough to play again, the other shoulder went out. I gave up.

I would pick it up every now and then but sounded so awful to myself, I once again, just gave up. We are a very musical family. Both my kids and my husband play. For Christmas I got myself new strings and have started playing again. It is amazing how much difference a few minutes a day can make.

Still really rusty, but it is beginning to come back!

Whew. Just finished writing an epic about the latest version of the LGF Pages bookmarklet, walking through every part of it and explaining how all the code works. Been working on this all week; I do these take-apart posts for myself as much as for the audience, because I actually learn things while I do them. Writing about the code forces me to think carefully about every bit of it, and I frequently find things that can be tweaked and improved this way.

The Rice University Marching Owl Band used to do a tribute to the LSU Tigers by forming a tiger paw whose middle finger (the drum corps) extended itself a few times when they ran up and down the field. There is no ‘good taste’ in college marching bands.

In 1991, the University of Notre Dame banned the LSJUMB from visiting its campus after a halftime show at Stanford in which drum major Eric Selvik dressed as a nun and conducted the band using a wooden cross as a baton. (During the pregame show and first half of the game, the drum major had been dressed as an Orthodox Jew, where the wooden cross was part of a menorah-like baton.) After the halftime show, a female Notre Dame fan ran onto the field, approached from behind the unsuspecting Selvik, and forcibly ripped the nun habit off of his head. Selvik pursued and regained his habit from the attacker, who in the scuffle for the habit told the drum major he was “going to hell for this.”[4]

In 1992, the Athletic Department pressured the LSJUMB to fire its announcers after one used the phrase “No chuppah, no schtuppa” at a San Jose State University game halftime show.

In 1994, the Band was disciplined after nineteen members skipped a field rehearsal in Los Angeles to play outside the L.A. County Courthouse during jury selection for the O. J. Simpson trial. The band’s song selection included an arrangement of The Zombies’ “She’s Not There.” Defense lawyer Robert Shapiro described the incident to the media as “a new low in tasteless behavior.”[5] Later that year, during the halftime show of the football game against USC (where Simpson had played football and won the 1968 Heisman Trophy), band members drove a white Ford Bronco with bloody handprints around the Stanford Stadium track,[6] an obvious allusion to the low-speed chase in which police followed a white Bronco carrying Simpson around the Los Angeles area.

In 1997, the Band was again disciplined for shows lampooning Catholicism and the Irish at a game against Notre Dame. The Band put on a show entitled “These Irish, Why Must they Fight?” Besides the mocking supposedly stereotypical Irish-Catholic behavior, there was a Riverdance formation, and a Potato Famine joke, drawing criticism[7] for its “tasteless” portrayal of Catholics. Both the band and the Stanford President Gerhard Casper subsequently apologized for the band’s behavior.[8] Subsequently, the Band was prohibited from playing at games against Notre Dame for two years.[9]

In 2002 and 2006, the Band was sanctioned for off-the-field behavior, including violations of the University alcohol policy.

In 2004, the Band drew national attention and Mormon ire for joking about polygamy during a game against Brigham Young University. The Dollies appeared in wedding veils with the Band Manager of the time kneeling and “proposing” to each in turn as the announcer referred to marriage as “the sacred bond that exists between a man and a woman… and a woman… and a woman… and a woman… and a woman.” [10]

OK, that was weird. Showed much of Iowa’s halftime band show. Then, Stanford’s “unconventional” band takes the field. They show about 15-seconds of closeups—rainbow wigs, pretty funny formation—then switch to really wide aerial shots, then cut away to a commercial block with about a zillion commercials, then come back and it’s highlights, more commercials and no band. Wonder what they were doing that got ESPN all riled. Tweets saying they mocked the whole state of Iowa…

Maybe it was the percussionist drumming on the kitchen sink.

Reminds me of when DF proudly listed all of the deep red states that were not part of the Confederacy…without regard for the fact that only a few of them WERE states at the time of the Civil War.

I’ve seen bumper stickers like that in Illinois too, BW. In Cook County, no less. So the sight of one such is in no way dispositive.

Moreover, actions speak louder than words: The GOP in Montana kicked racists and Neo-Confederates out of its annual Lincoln Dinner and the state bar disbarred than Oathkeeper lawyer. The actual moves by people with authority in Montana have been against racism rather than in favor of it. So that Neo-Confederate asshole may live in Montana, but most Montanans do not agree with him.

Judges do not tolerate lawyers abandoning their clients as Rhodes did and they sure as Hell expect to be answered when they demand that a lawyer account for his or her actions. Rhodes didn’t even bother mailing back an envelope full of DERP, which is a big part of why things moved so fast against him.

Still, I expect him to turn up sometime in January peddling a fake tale of ‘persecution’ in which he will claim that the Montana state supreme courts ruling that he had to actually do his job as a lawyer in order to be a lawyer is somehow ‘tyranny’.

Very few people get warm-fuzzies when they see other citizens carrying guns. Everyone else gets freaked out to some degree - maybe a little, maybe a lot. Most people see a gun as a threat - either from the person carrying it, or because they’re wondering WHY someone feels the need to carry it - is there a threat nearby?

Because people feel less safe when they see a stranger with a gun, not more safe.

My prediction: open carry backfires in a big way IF people actually do it. But I don’t think they will. I hope they don’t.

Florida’s anti-mask law was (openly) designed to combat the KKK. For that reason (because doing away with an anti-Klan law would obviously look horrible), if none other, it is unlikely to be changed.

For those unfamiliar with it, the State of Jefferson is a long-running secessionist movement based mostly in the state of California, but also found in some parts of southern Oregon as well, going all the way back to October 1941. They don’t want to break away from the USA; they seek to create a 51st State (at least in its original iteration). Largely, it’s an expression of discontent with the rest of the state by the residents of rural northern California - it also finds fertile ground in southern and rural Oregon owing to the electoral dominance of Multnomah County, the Willamette Valley region and cities like Eugene, Salem, etc. Washington state has similar issues - the Cascade Mountains are basically a dividing line.

Needless to say, the Pearl Harbor attack and America’s subsequent entry into WWII put the kibosh on the State of Jefferson, historically speaking. It seems to have gained momentum again.

Also, in regards to Oregon, it’s no secret that eastern Oregon gets shafted when it comes to politics and financial resources. That being said, it’s sort of hard to argue against it when you consider the vast population gap: If you add up the populations of Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Lane, Marion, and Jackson Counties, that’s 65% of the entire state’s population, just those six counties alone. If you were to add in the rest of the “Western” counties, it’s damn near 87% and that’s not even including Deschutes or Klamath Counties in that particular statistic.

Just finished watching the pilot for the USA Network series “Colony”…

Early on in the episode the thought came to me that each scene seemed like one of those mini-scenes used in acting classes, to teach people how to do basics, such as dialogue and interacting with another person.

And the entire show seemed like that. Scenes strung together like Christmas lights on a strand, but with no real plot.

I never watched Lost but I imagine this is what a show without a real plot looks like. I gave up on Under the Dome after season 1 as that show really came off as a shaggy dog story - just one never ending series of scenes for actors to practice, without an overarching compelling plot.

Colony plot came off like that to me.

Didn’t really make me want to watch the premier on the 14th.

I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if that were the case. They’d be a smallish state, to be honest.

As of the 2010 Census, if the Jefferson counties were a state (original 1941 counties), the state’s population would be 457,859: smaller than any state at the time. Approximately 82% of those residents live in Oregon. Its land area would be 21,349.76 square miles (55,295.6 km2) - a little smaller than West Virginia. The area is almost evenly divided between Oregon and California. Its population density would be 21.44 inhabitants per square mile (8.28/km2) - a little more than Idaho. With the addition of the more modern Jefferson movement (Coos and Douglas and Lake Counties in Oregon, and Humboldt, Trinity, Shasta, Lassen, Mendocino, Lake, Tehama, Plumas, Glenn, Butte, Colusa, Sierra, Sutter, Yuba, Nevada, Placer and El Dorado Counties in California), the population as of the 2010 Census would be 2,313,958, making it the 36th most populous state in the US.

I saw it, too. It seemed like the flip side of Childhood’s End — malevolent aliens with cooperative humans doing their bidding. It’s not clear why these aliens would seal off cities, restrict food and supplies, and generally foster a repressive regime. Surely, ETs capable of interstellar travel could manage to subjugate the human race without all the fascist infrastructure.

Yes it is. And I have noted on my iPhone that as the ioS versions increase the attached apps become more and more annoying in their little add-ons. With no way in many cases no way to trim things to a more functional display mode. So I end up with big fingers trying to manipulate cluttered controls on a small touchscreen.

Plus adding folders to toss all the built-in apps I have no use for in. It’s still primarily a phone for me, not a small PC that happens to have a “call another PC” app on it.

Can I just say how much I LOATHE the sanctimonious horseshit on social media every stinking year about New Years Resolutions no one keeps? God Help Me.

And this year The Husband has jumped on the bandwagon. He went and spent 300 dollars on an overpriced freaking BLENDER to make green smoothies. Because this is going to fix his diabetes and weight problems. He just got around to telling me, the person who shops,budgets and cooks all the food, about this yesterday. He plans to start Monday. While our shelves are filled with food he now considers “not good for him”. According to some dipshit “certified nutrition expert” on FUCKING FACEBOOK. Nevermind the two ACTUAL nutritionists we both saw, one after his first heart attack and angioplasty (he’s had 3) and one a little over a year ago, at his insistence. And did he follow the ACTUAL nutritionist’s advice? Nope. For about a month, maybe. Had he listened to that advice, he might be a few pounds or more lighter and more importantly, off the diabetes meds. But no, a fucking 300 dollar blender and some fucking overpriced produce is going to make things all better. Meanwhile I can’t afford all the things I need to keep the front porch from literally falling off the house. I want to break things.

Then there’s the same people, every stinking year, who vow to do this or that to lose weight and get in shape. My neighbor, the conservative who loves guns and trucks and Jesus, is now spending a fortune on losing weight with aromatherapy oils, some of which she’s putting in water and drinking. Yummy. But, are any of these people actually physically moving their bodies? NOPE. No exercise mentioned by any of them.

Meanwhile, back on Planet Earth, I have been on a mission to feel better. So, the dog and I began walking about 3 years ago, almost daily. In that time we’ve walked more than 2300 miles with a higher goal set each year. I’ve lost a bit of weight(15 so far, with a goal of 20 more) and kept it off and the only money spent has been on shoes. Not expensive trendy shoes, just shoes with good arch support and a halfway decent sole. And can I get a single one of those people to walk with me? NOPE. Not ever. AND I STILL EAT COOKIES when I want to.

And this year The Husband has jumped on the bandwagon. He went and spent 300 dollars on an overpriced freaking BLENDER to make green smoothies. Because this is going to fix his diabetes and weight problems. He just got around to telling me, the person who shops,budgets and cooks all the food, about this yesterday. He plans to start Monday. While our shelves are filled with food he now considers “not good for him”. According to some dipshit “certified nutrition expert” on FUCKING FACEBOOK. Nevermind the two ACTUAL nutritionists we both saw, one after his first heart attack and angioplasty (he’s had 3) and one a little over a year ago, at his insistence. And did he follow the ACTUAL nutritionist’s advice? Nope. For about a month, maybe. Had he listened to that advice, he might be a few pounds or more lighter and more importantly, off the diabetes meds. But no, a fucking 300 dollar blender and some fucking overpriced produce is going to make things all better. Meanwhile I can’t afford all the things I need to keep the front porch from literally falling off the house. I want to break things.

Then there’s the same people, every stinking year, who vow to do this or that to lose weight and get in shape. My neighbor, the conservative who loves guns and trucks and Jesus, is now spending a fortune on losing weight with aromatherapy oils, some of which she’s putting in water and drinking. Yummy. But, are any of these people actually physically moving their bodies? NOPE. No exercise mentioned by any of them.

Meanwhile, back on Planet Earth, I have been on a mission to feel better. So, the dog and I began walking about 3 years ago, almost daily. In that time we’ve walked more than 2300 miles with a higher goal set each year. I’ve lost a bit of weight(15 so far, with a goal of 20 more) and kept it off and the only money spent has been on shoes. Not expensive trendy shoes, just shoes with good arch support and a halfway decent sole. And can I get a single one of those people to walk with me? NOPE. Not ever. AND I STILL EAT COOKIES when I want to.

My ex insisted on getting a Vita-Mix so she could juice fruits and veggies and go on a raw foods diet. This was pre-Facebook. She had read about it somewhere: raw foods are best, cooking removes valuable nutrients, blah blah blah. I knew there was no point in arguing with her. She had a book! I had only common sense and a science background.

This raw foods diet lasted a few months, and the Vita-Mix ended up gathering dust.

She also did a macrobiotic diet, a fruitarian diet, a vegan diet, among others, too. All short-lived.

She’s 65 and in OK physical health, AFAIK. We don’t talk much anymore.

I’ve done work with a lot of those counties. Some are more rural than others—Butte and Mendocino seem to have some semblance of county structure. Some of the others are pretty dependent on their connectivity to Sacramento. Some of them are pretty much mountains and reservations.

There’s a Keep It California group against the whole Jefferson idea—here’s their fact sheet. (Their tagline is— If it were a business proposal, would you invest in the “State of Jefferson”)

Some of those counties were created back in the heyday of their extractive industries (like lumber) and also were influenced by transportation access. Del Norte County for example has no business being a county any more, but I don’t suppose they’ll merge with their neighbors any time soon.

The original State of Jefferson was proposed because the folks in way northern CA wanted paved roads. It was more a PR thing than an actual desire to secede so they naturally dropped it when WW II rolled around.
Now I’d be surprised if very many of the proponents were really serious about it-a few wingnuts, sure, but most of those flying the flag are just having fun with it.

If you drink water instead of soda/coffee/beer… that reduces your calorie intake significantly. And if you drink water with a little squeeze of lemon instead of having a snack, it can temporarily satisfy what you think it hunger and make it easier to wait until your meal.

(also… a wedge of lettuce and some fresh crisp carrots, if you happen to like that sort of thing, can be very satisfying and take up a lot of room in your stomach that would otherwise go to cookies and potato chips).

I used to make yogurt and banana smoothies for The Kid with the 40 dollar blender when he was in high school to add to his breakfast because his lunch was scheduled late in the day. After HS I put it in the cupboard and I don’t think it’s been used since. I swear, I’m tempted to run the stupid blender all day til the motor burns up. He still hasn’t brought it into the house. Among the states, California’s population growth rate in 2014-15 was 17th, and Oregon’s was 10th. Their liberal policies just don’t seem to be hurting them much.

I wonder how they plan on getting approval of both the legislatures of California and Oregon as required by the Constitution before they can become a separate state.

Plus the fact that the counties would also certainly end up with less money (getting a larger percentage of a much smaller pie).

Frankly, I wonder why no RWNJ backed plan for Texas divisionism has yet to spring forth and gain footing.
I would think the possibility of 4 new Republican leaning states, thus an additional eight Republican Senators, would be alluring.

I gotta say, I get really annoyed by the people who live in sparsely populated areas bitching about lack of representation. They’re every bit as well represented as the people who live in metro areas. Indeed, because of the US Senate and the Electoral College, they’re OVERrepresented. They want their big, empty counties and stated to have the same power as cities where MILLIONS of people live. Why? Who the fuck are THEY that they’re so damn special?

That growth is solely in illegal Mexicans, artsy types, and teh ghey. The only productive people moving to the Left Coast are Chinese and they keep the place goin’ while Real ‘Muricans flee in droves!

This is where they get the color coded county maps of the US to show that the Republican candidate won more acreage than the Democrat, as it that counted. Not to mention what ‘The Cities’ is code for.
