The Top 10 Contributors’ LGF Pages of 2015

1The most popular user-submitted LGF Page of the year was this tale of poetic justice: Elephant Hunter Crushed to Death by Baby Elephant.

2Number 2 on our list was this massively fun video: Teacher And His Students Recreate ‘Uptown Funk’.

3The number 3 slot goes to a report from the Jade Helm conspiracy theory nut culture: SURPRISE: 1/3 of Republicans and 1/2 of Tea Party Supporters Think Obama Will Take Over Texas.

4In fourth place, an excellent video presentation: Inside the Whitney Plantation, the First and Only American Museum About Slavery.

5Our fifth most popular LGF Page of the year was this story told in tweets: Epic Twitter Pwnage 2! Creationists Try to Take Down Evolution, Fail Miserably!

6A thought-provoking piece on the frightening rise of the deliberately ignorant right wing is number 6: Anti-Intellectualism Is Killing America.

7This LGF Page led to an interesting debate in the comment section: Charlie Hebdo: The French Satirical Magazine Is Heroic. It Is Also Racist.

8Number 8 was a post on Rush Limbaugh’s attempt to keep his brainwashed followers from seeing anything that might contradict him on Twitter: New Rush Limbaugh App Will Block His “Totalitarian” Twitter Critics For You.

9One of the stupidest right wing fake outrages of the year was the silly uproar over the renaming of Alaska’s Mt. McKinley to its Native American name Denali, and this satirical post is our ninth most popular Page of the year: Angry Mob Descends on Ohio State House to Protest Obama Mountain Name Change.

10Before Chuck C. Johnson, Todd Kincannon was most hateful, deranged right winger on Twitter until he was tossed off. And then his life really went downhill fast: Todd Kincannon’s Wife Taped Hours of Threats.

I was wondering what the deal was with throwing the pennies and found this:

Montana resident Ryan Payne, an associate of Bundy’s and who participated in the standoff with federal officials at the Bundy Ranch, said Wednesday he hoped the Hammonds will reconsider and accept “protection.”

“They’re not in prison yet,” Payne said.

Payne said he expected “a lot” protesters Saturday. Organizers have asked protesters to bring pennies, nickels and dimes to toss at a county office building to symbolize how county authorities have “sold out” the Hammonds by not offering refuge.

Ah, this helps things make sense:

The Hammonds originally received much shorter sentences from a U.S. District Court judge, who said the mandatory minimum sentence of five years was far too long. The lenient sentences, however, were overturned by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, leading to the Hammonds’ resentencing.

So the “resentencing” business is the 9th Court overturning a District Court judge’s ruling that was based upon personal opinion rather than the letter of the law.

Ignoring mandatory minimums because “they’re good people” does tend to get the sentence appealed by the government, yes.

Also the part where this has been a repeated issue with the family (i.e., the first time they did it they were let off with a warning, and the second time they did it with complete disregard for the firefighting crews in the area).

Everyone is still trying to come to an understanding of the elephant in the elephant train:

Thirty days to Iowa: Candidates make final sprint

[…]

Republicans say that Trump’s ground game, which has been the source of intense speculation, is the real deal. That’s critical, as Trump is banking on turning out a diverse coalition of caucus-goers that haven’t historically participated in the process.

A poor showing in Iowa could doom Trump, as his flashy polling numbers and record of “winning” are central to his pitch.

“He’s definitely for real out here,” said one Iowa Republican official who requested anonymity. “The question is whether the people they’ve identified as supporters will turn out. I’m not convinced they will, but if he can turn out just half of them he could blow the top off this thing.”

Yes, it is insane. That’s why it makes no sense.

You have to remember that, in the wingnut mind, they have the ability to differentiate between federal and state/local government when it suits them. It’s the federal government who are “railroading” the Hammonds, so the militia nutters have thus convinced themselves that the local government could flip off the feds and offer “sanctuary” to the Hammonds from federal law.

Speaking of Iowa, a quick look at this graph:

Image: dnc-ahm341n6.png

pretty much paints the picture of what playing politics in Iowa is about: the change of farming into an activity really out of the reach of the family farmer. The cultural transition from family farms to big business has been a long thing in America, but it continues apace with prime farmland becoming quite a precious thing.

There’s a legit point buried under all that hot mess though, mandatory minimums completely do away with judicial discretion, which at least used to be a valuable tool in mitigating prosecutorial overreach. It doesn’t sound like the Hammonds are the most deserving recipients for leniency, and local corruption may well be at the root of the district court judge’s decision in this case, but minimum sentencing is also why we have such an appallingly high rate of incarceration.

Yes, but a lot of these militia folks are completely for mandatory minimums when applied to the “wrong” sort of people.

For what it is worth, I have a small amount of respect for the Hammonds because it sounds like they’re willing to serve their time and likely proceed with the appeal in the correct way of things, and have asked the militias to go away. I would agree that mandatory minimums are a horrible thing - but the judicial branch has to follow the law until the law is changed, which is why the prosecutors had to appeal. Failure to do so would have caused a mess in other cases down the road, because this isn’t something that can be decided on the district level but would ultimately be up to either lawmakers or the Supreme Court.

If they want to start the ball rolling while serving out their time, that’s great. Let’s look at them for the drug laws, etc. too while we’re at it.

Looks like the Affluenza teen’s lawyered up with a high-powered Mexican attorney.

According to Mexican news reports, Benitez represented former Tijuana Mayor Jorge Hank Rhon when he was arrested on weapons charges. Guns found inside Rhon’s home were linked to several murders, authorities said.
Rhon argued that police never had a search warrant to search the house so everything they found was inadmissible in court, and according to the reports, a judge agreed and the charges were dropped.

Asked Friday if Benitez was the same attorney who represented Rhon, he said, “Yes, I had the privilege of representing Mr. Hank in 2011, with good results.”
In 2014, Benitez also represented U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, arrested for crossing the border into Mexico with three weapons in his truck. After 214 days in jail, prosecutors dropped the charges and he was freed.

Mississippi Coast Coliseum is an 11,500-seat reserved seating, 15,000 festival seating, multi-purpose arena in Biloxi, Mississippi.

It appears as if one of it’s claims to fame is that it’s hosted quite a bit of professional wrestling.

Maybe because as a trained psychiatrist, he still fancies himself a man of science. And that would be true in most cases, but he has long ago joined the dark side where anti-science is king.

Ask a scientist if a medical doctor is automatically a scientist. You’ll get a resounding no. Scientist isn’t defined by the MD or PhD. It’s defined by what they do.

Neither Rand Paul nor Ben Carson, nor my family doctor for that matter, is a scientist.

When Freddy and Donald Trump’s father, Fred Sr., died in 1999, the roughly $20 million inheritance was divided up among his children and their descendants, “other than my son Fred C. Trump Jr.,” according to The Times.

Donald Trump had helped draft the will. At the time, Freddy Trump’s children sued, claiming Donald Trump and his siblings had used “undue influence” over their grandfather, who had dementia.

Donald retaliated by withdrawing the medical benefits he had promised to his nephew’s infant son, who suffered from seizures that led to cerebral palsy, according to The Times.

My latest photo on Flickr is actually quite a personal one:

My husband, Dave.

This has been in a strange way, the best Christmas we’ve had together. About 10 weeks ago, he phoned me, saying he had breathing trouble. A couple of days later he was in the Doctor’s being prescribed medicine for heart problems.

A couple of weeks later, he had an angiogram, and was told: you have heart problems: it looks like a bypass or stent.

We had a check couple weeks later, and were told: It’s a bypass. 4-6 weeks before we tell you.

Next day: You’re in next Tuesday. We’re thinking: what the hell? One week later, I’m saying hello to my husband, as he’s in the intensive care hours after the operation. We’re both dazed, both not there, thinking “Did we just dodge a bullet, without thinking about it?”

And so, he we are weeks later, in a cafe, just going off to meet in-laws for a post Christmas meal. The post Christmas milleu is around us in this cafe. But somehow it doesn’t matter. We have each other, and that’s the best Christmas present.
