Criminals don’t follow gun laws

Chicago did a study on all the crime guns seized there. They found the vast majority had been legally purchased. 60% had been purchased out-of-state, primarily from states with lax gun laws. Guns used in crime don’t come from some separate supply stream that rarely if ever crosses with the supply stream for legitimate gun purchases. They come from the same gun dealers as all the other guns.

To be fair…the Founders likely assumed that firearms would become more efficient and deadly over time, since they knew perfectly well that flintlocks had replaced doglocks which in turn had replaced matchlocks. Also, the Ferguson Rifle, which was a military breech loading flintlock rifle capable of up to 8 aimed shots a minute had already seen action in South Carolina. The Ferguson was 70 years ahead of its time and American militia lucky enough to capture one off of a dead British soldier at King’s Mountain passed them down through their families. Fergusons were used in the early stages of the Civil War and every known Ferguson in America today can be traced to a known Confederate soldier who got it from grandad (who got it from a dead Brit).

What the Founders did not anticipate was a large standing army and police forces that did away with the need for a militia (Radley Balko argues most of the Founders would probably be horrified at what the police forces have become and would consider them unconstitutional), not would they have anticipated the bizarre pathology of mass shooting events that have shown up. Mental illness and social alienation were not at all understood at that time.

Let’s give the land back to The People. All The People.

We’ll have to put some sort of Bureau in place for Land Management, and to ensure that it the bureau answers to The People, we’ll put it in a larger Department that is responsible for The Interior of the US.

We’ll make sure that Department is answerable to The People by making the person in charge, and their deputies, selected by the representatives of The People.

Oh, wait. We already did that.

Rod Dreher has a major case of

TEH ARABS ARE COMING TO RAPE TEH PRETTY GERMAN GIRLS OMG TEH ARABS ARE RAPING TEH WHITE GERMAN GIRLS I TOLD YOU SO RAPING GERMAN GIRLS ANGELA MERKEL IS A SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIOR SACRIFICING WHITE GERMAN VIRGINS TO TEH ARAB HORDES

theamericanconservative.com

Bonus comment from a Gates of Vienna type:

K. W. Jeter says:
January 5, 2016 at 12:51 pm

Per RD:

Why shouldn’t Germans, especially German women, worry about a massive influx of young men from cultures that regards Western women as whores?

Welcome to the white nationalist side, Mr. Dreher; there are plenty of open-borders immigration enthusiasts, not just in Europe but here as well, who would say that your concern over this influx, or even just your noticing it, is because you’re someone whose heart is “filled with hate,” to use Frau Merkel’s repeated description.

So exactly what have your differences with Jean Raspail dwindled to now?

[NFR: Just because I am not a multiculturalist does not mean I am a white nationalist. — RD]

Oh Rod, you stalwart defender of white European virtue!

Just because I hate mutliculturalism, social justice warriors and those damned trannies, let a self declared neo Nazi post on my page and read Derbyshire and Steve Sailer every day doesn’t mean I am…you know, one of those cross burner types!

This is one of those moments when one who wishes to be a reasonable person recognizes that he is now apparently in agreement with someone who is clearly not a reasonable person and thus takes a moment to reevaluate his position. But I’m not sure Dreher is capable of such an epiphany.

Originally, yes. But the problem is that private party transfers break the chain of eligible custody and accountability. That’s what Obama’s EO is designed to rectify.

Forget it. Denser than lead. Or unobtainium. He’s derpium. Blocked for sheer ignorance - when he posts stuff that debunks the very things he claims.

Like the posting about how fatality rates have stabilized but are way down from 20 years ago - curiously happening to coincide when the Brady law took effect requiring background checks.

Now, Obama wants to expand and streamline the process, and he went on to claim no one stopped by the checks, which undermines his claims that the 2A right is somehow infringed.

A lot of these guys simply do not understand how the private party transfer loophole works. They think there are some magical consequences that happen to people who “accidentally” sell a gun to an ineligible buyer. They actually don’t know that in states that haven’t closed the loophole sellers don’t even have to ask if the buyer is eligible, ask to see their identification or keep any records of the sale whatsoever. It comes as a shock to them when they learn that there are absolutely zero consequences for a seller who maintains plausible deniability through such a policy of deliberate ignorance, and as a result ends up transferring a gun to a felon who uses it in a murder.

About a year after the VA Tech shooting, a brother of one of the victims went to gun show here in VA with $1000 cash in his pocket. He walked out with a rifle, a shotgun, and three pistols. One of the pistols was exactly the same model of gun used in the shooting, whose seller had approached him while he stood in line and offered it to him for $300. When he told the seller he didn’t have any ID, do you think the sale ended? Of course not, the guy decided for $100 more, he’d look the other way.

Enraged Birders To Retake Oregon Wildlife Refuge In Dawn Offensive

The armed militants who have occupied the Oregon wildlife refuge may be encouraged the apparent lack of response by government authorities. But their stand is reportedly doomed anyway, since they picked the worst possible location to make their point, according to a source at the American Birding Association.

“The Malheur sanctuary is home to approximately 320 avian species beloved by birders. BIG mistake.”

The nearby town of Burns has seen a rapid influx of birders who are determined to eject the illegal occupiers. The birders possess a number of advantages when it comes to combat in open terrain, according to those familiar with the hobby.

“They are masters of disguise who know how to blend into the outdoor environment, whereas the enemy, with their pickups, massive guns, and loud obnoxious personalities, tend to stick out like a sore thumb.”

They’re going to keep at it into November, because they didn’t learn their lesson in 2012 and are convinced that the law is so unpopular that people will drag themselves to the polls just to vote against any Democrat who supports it.

Meanwhile, red states left and right have sounded the retreat on their insistence that they’d never, ever accept the Medicaid expansion. Just last week, Mark Bevin had to retreat from his insistence that he was going to dismantle Kynect entirely.

“Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: ‘Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?’ That’d be a big problem,” Trump said when asked about the topic. “It’d be a very precarious one for Republicans because he’d be running and the courts may take a long time to make a decision. You don’t want to be running and have that kind of thing over your head.”

Trump added, “I’d hate to see something like that get in his way. But a lot of people are talking about it and I know that even some states are looking at it very strongly, the fact that he was born in Canada and he has had a double passport.”
