Y’All Qaeda Is About to Find Out How Cold the Oregon Wilderness Can Get

Shutting off the warmth
US News • Views: 54,310

Some self-styled constitutional patriots are about to get very cold up there at the Malheur Wildlife Sanctuary: Authorities plan to cut off power to militia at occupied Oregon refuge.

Federal authorities are planning to cut off the power of the wildlife refuge in Oregon that has been taken over by militia, exposing the armed occupiers to sub-zero temperatures in an effort to flush them out.

Armed militants will begin their third day at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, a remote federal outpost in eastern Oregon, on Tuesday, and have vowed to remain for months in protest over the treatment of two local cattle ranchers.

A federal government official told the Guardian that authorities were planning on Monday to cut the power at the refuge.

“It’s in the middle of nowhere,” said the official, who is based in Washington, DC, and has knowledge of the planned response to the militia. “And it’s flat-ass cold up there.”

That’s true for me as well. I have family in both Pullman and Seattle, WA, so I know about the great differences west and east there (having visited a couple of times). But if I’d have imagined eastern Oregon as the same as the Pullman area I think I’d be mistaken.

Not much of an “Exit Plan” hinted at in the article.
But, what I found interesting was these two paragraphs:

Led by Ammon and Ryan Bundy — sons of Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher who became infamous for another standoff with the federal government in 2014 — the gunmen took over the unoccupied facility in remote Burns, Oregon in a bid to free the Hammonds and sound the alarm about what they claim is a government war against private ranchers.

And

But LaVoy Finicum, one the gunmen who seized the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, made it clear he wanted to get back to his Nevada ranch.

I was honestly surprised to see gunmen used by the MSM

A question for the more information-savvy than I:

Where can I find “the other side of the story” regarding the BLM, without having to go into the full-throttle freakshow internet?

If I google search for anything about these controversial things the BLM supposedly does, I get a raft of militia freak sites. I hear stuff about corporate land grabs, how the Feds own this huge part of the west, yadda yadda, but I’d like to know if there are legitimately questionable things done by the BLM. I’m not looking for extremes, just reality.

The BLM administers a fair amount of land all across the West. They enforce grazing fees, control use of the land by local landowners, and generally serve as stewards for the land. They’ve done nothing illegal.

The Bundys and Hammonds, however, feel the land is theirs to do whatever the hell they want with, even if that encroaches on the health of the wilderness area and on the access of others to the same patch of land. If anything illegal has been going on, it’s been done by these guys and their fellow travelers, who believe federal laws and regulations do not apply to them.

46
gocart mozart  Jan 5, 2016 • 6:45:42pm
Turning now to the merits, we hold that the district court
illegally sentenced the Hammonds to terms of imprisonment
less than the statutory minimum. A minimum sentence
mandated by statute is not a suggestion that courts have
discretion to disregard. See United States v. Wipf, 620 F.3d
1168, 1169-70 (9th Cir. 2010). The court below was bound
to sentence the Hammonds to five-year terms of
imprisonment. See 18 U.S.C. 844(f)(1). Although the district
court attempted to justify lesser sentences on Eighth
Amendment grounds, sentencing the Hammonds to five years
of imprisonment would not have been unconstitutional.

If conservatives have a problem with this, they should appoint more judicial activists to the bench who can then “usurp the will of the people.”

To be fair, the BLM has done some stupid things in its time. There are cases where the locals were right and the BLM was wrong. There are probably many more cases where it’s the other way around. There are also places where ranchers and the BLM are working hard together to restore overgrazed land to health.
As with so many things, it’s complicated. But don’t tell the conservatives that. They won’t be able to process a situation that isn’t binary.

“Red lights are flashin’ around me,/ Yeah, love, it looks like they found me”, and the chorus, the voice of a cop on the bullhorn is heard, commanding: “THIS IS THE POLICE. YOU ARE SURROUNDED. And it looks like Bill’O really stepped in it this time. The talking point for wingnuts for days now has been that mandatory sentences are “the sux” because of the Hammonds, so what does Bill suggest?

Unlike his colleague Andrea Tantaros, O’Reilly said he believed Obama was sincere in his desire to increase public safety. Instead, he argued that anyone convicted of using a gun while committing a crime should receive a mandatory 10-year sentence on top of their sentence for the crime.

“You simply can’t leave sentencing to local judges if you want to control gun violence on a national level,” O’Reilly said. “You can’t do it.”

Some wingnut heads are gonna pop like champagne corks over this.

re: #33 gocart mozart

Given the seriousness of arson, a five-year sentence is not
grossly disproportionate to the offense. The Supreme Court
has upheld far tougher sentences for less serious or, at the
very least, comparable offenses. See Lockyer v. Andrade,
538 U.S. 63 (2003) (upholding a sentence of fifty years to life
under California’s three-strikes law for stealing nine
videotapes); Ewing v. California, 538 U.S. 11 (2003)
(upholding a sentence of twenty-five years to life under
California’s three-strikes law for the theft of three golf clubs);
UNITED STATES V. HAMMOND 11
Hutto v. Davis, 454 U.S. 370 (1982) (per curiam) (upholding
a forty-year sentence for possession of nine ounces of
marijuana with the intent to distribute); Rummel v. Estelle,
445 U.S. 263 (1980) (upholding a life sentence under Texas’s
recidivist statute for obtaining $120.75 by false pretenses).
And we and other courts have done the same. See, e.g.,
United States v. Tolliver, 730 F.3d 1216, 1230-32 (10th Cir.
2013) (upholding a 430-month sentence for using arson in the
commission of a felony); United States v. Major, 676 F.3d
803, 812 (9th Cir. 2012) (upholding a 750-year sentence for
offenses under 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)), cert. denied, 133 S. Ct.
280; United States v. Meiners, 485 F.3d 1211, 1212-13 (9th
Cir. 2007) (per curiam) (upholding a fifteen-year sentence for
advertising child pornography); United States v. Uphoff,
232 F.3d 624, 625-26 (8th Cir. 2000) (upholding a five-year
sentence for arson of a building).

I’m sorry. I know I’ve posted about this before (a couple of times). I went to the Trump rally in Derry, NH on a lark because my 14yo wanted see what all the ruckus was about back in August. A month later a colleague was saying “come on, Trump is a joke, he’ll never….” I told her that he is and is not a joke. I explained what I had witnessed. She thought I was out of my mind.

That’s the problem.

And it looks like Bill’O really stepped in it this time. The talking point for wingnuts for days now has been that mandatory sentences are “the sux” because of the Hammonds, so what does Bill suggest?

Some wingnut heads are gonna pop like champagne corks over this.

Well, for one thing, the President can’t arbitrarily add enhancements to sentencing guidelines.
And, pretty much state and federal criminal statutes already have weapons enhancements.

If something of mine is stolen, I can see a criminal penalty for poor storage. But of course a gun can be stolen with the trigger lock on it. Or the safe can be stolen or broken into. A gun owner should not be responsible for the criminal acts of another person after being the victim of a crime to begin with.

Not unless we do that with our cars, knives, heavy equipment etc. We don’t do that. If someone breaks into my home steals my gun removes the trigger lock and uses it in a crime I am not responsible. I’m a victim of a theft. If that guy steals my vodka and car and drunkenly crashes it into a crowded kindergarten schoolyard I should not be held responsible. the DUI car thief would be responsible.

Insurance companies give discounts for antitheft devices on cars. California requires proof of ownership of an approved gun safe, or simultaneous purchase of a compatible trigger or cable lock. So, it’s not too tough to put the two ideas together.

I’m honestly not convinced there should be any such weapon; perhaps a “smart gun” that will only fire nonlethal ammunition, or a taser. But certainly not firearms as they exist now.

And yes, I’m aware that my position is highly unlikely to become law anytime in the foreseeable future. Which I think is a shame. As a nation, we’d be much better off if all of our guns were to cease to exist tomorrow morning.

I have watched nearly all of NCIS, mostly for the character interplay and the way the writers have fleshed out these characters. The plots, though, are often silly and during the last several seasons focused too much on terrorism and espionage to be believable.

And, the actors are aging. Weatherly went through a middle-aged spread phase that seems to be less noticeable, and McCallum, bless him, is in his 80s. Harmon’s Gibbs has got to be approaching mandatory retirement age for an active agent. So, the writing is on the wall.

Sources: FBI developing plan to end Malheur standoff

LaVoy Finicum, a member of the small, armed group that has been occupying a national wildlife refuge in Oregon, says he believes federal officials have issued warrants for the arrest of five group members.

Harney County Joint Information Center, which said in a statement it had no information on arrests or arrest warrants and that authorities were “still working on a peaceful resolution.”

Finicum, holding a rifle and a backpack, told reporters he would stay at the entrance to the refuge overnight so authorities could find him. Ammon Bundy, a group leader, said they would take a defensive position anticipating a possible raid.

LaVoy believes warrants have been issued.

Yeah, NCIS has survived this long because of the characters and the actors who play them. Dumping everyone and starting with a new cast (maybe they keep the young’uns around) would be a big, big risk.

The main trouble with procedurals is coming up with new variations on the same basic plot: someone is dead and we need to find out how and by whom. (within 45 minutes)

Don’t know about a separate policy for each gun, but certainly a dedicated policy that is required for each gun owner. Gun damage covered only by that policy, excluded in a person’s general umbrella policy. Perhaps with higher premiums for multiple weapons, depending on how the insurance companies calc their risks.

(Will have to go read my umbrella & homeowner’s policies to see if they have any provisions/exclusions. Not a gun user so never paid attention.)

Chinese netizens know how to evade bans, but everyday viewers might be stymied. The media censors banned The Big Bang Theory for unknown reasons for several months last year, which drove its Chinese fans batty. Then, also for unknown reasons, the ban was lifted.

Many Japanese anime series are also banned, largely for their violence and sexual nature, but also for a perceived lack of respect for authority figures.

China’s media censors make the Puritans look racy by comparison, yet porn sites abound in the Middle Kingdom. Sora Aoi, a Japanese adult video star, has a huge following in China, for example.

The dogs are only used to restrain or restrict a fleeing suspect.

In MA, the animals go home with their partners. No cop wants to have to check into a police kennel and check out a vicious dog to start their day.

It seems that at least one more GOP lawmaker has come out in favor of the seizure of a federal building by Ammon Bundy’s makeshift militia in protest of the resentencing of Steven and Dwight Hammond for arson on federal property.

And of course it’s Gordon Klingenschmitt.

Klingenschmitt, the Colorado state representative/televangelist/demon-hunter/exorcist/conspiracy theorist, shared a post on his Facebook page suggesting that the judge presiding over the Hammons’ case is guilty of treason and should therefore be hanged.

All of NV, most of AZ, and half each of WA, OR, CA, ID, UT, appear to share the same climactic conditions, judging by Google Earth imagery. Poor writing in the WaPo wire article:

Hydrogen, or thermonuclear, bombs are exponentially more powerful and destructive than atomic devices. An atomic bomb uses fission to break up the atomic nucleus and release energy, while a hydrogen or thermonuclear bomb uses fusion to add to the nucleus. This leads to an enormous explosion resulting from an uncontrolled, self-sustaining chain reaction.

Gack.

Also, do these folk have any idea what “self-sustaining” means?

Tried to differentiate fusion from fission, but I think they failed to do so in a proper way.

Keerist on a fucking cracker—I am so sick of these rightwing assholes comparing themselves to Rosa Parks. Yeah, the Bundy fuckwits have been so discriminated against. They’ve been grazing their fucking cattle at a fraction of market cost—and they won’t even pay that ; defaulting on loans; raising guns against federal agents; and endlessly running their illiterate, obnoxious mouths. And they’ve suffered nothing.

And maybe it’s because I’m tired, but the humor in these assholes is escaping me. They’re fucking publicity hounds, and the media is feeding their frenzy. Look at fucking Ritzheimer—he’s been on a coast-to-coast lunatic tour, stirring up as much trouble as he can.

Now, maybe the actual idiots on the ground in Oregon are the gang who couldn’t shoot straight, but there are way too many of their cohorts, watching and waiting, and if there is not some repercussions, including jail time, fines and more, the next bunch will just be emboldened.

I think Charlie Pierce has it right:

This is an act of armed sedition against lawful authority…These are men with guns who have declared themselves outside the law. These are men with guns who have taken something that belongs to all of us. These are traitors and thieves who got away with this dangerous nonsense once, and have been encouraged to get away with it again…Ammon Bundy and his brothers should have been thrown in jail after they gathered themselves in rebellion the first time.

This is another step down the road that leads to the broken shell of the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City.

re: #278 goddamnedfrank

The basic assumption of their world is that they have a unique and superior understanding of God, country, and freedom. They’ve bent the entire cosmos, scripture, the Constitution, and history itself to create a story in which they’re a priori the righteous and the Elect.

Their choice to carry weapons, and they way they speak about the use of lethal force is a continuation of this vainglory. They’re the Elect, so their discernment of who deserves to die, and who gets to kill with impunity, has the weight of objective truth.

(which is why the kid with the Skittles and the mild discipline issues deserved to die, and the armed vigilante who was following the teenage boy at night was a good and loyal man.)

If anything goes wrong, it won’t be their fault. If people get sick, if shooting starts, it won’t be their fault because they can only be failed.

Somebody should remind the Bundys that the last time they set up one of these armed protest shindigs, some of the participants peeled off and shot up a Walmart. But it won’t actually stick—for retroactively, that couple turned out to be Not Of The Wingnut Body…because that’s how it always is.

It’s not a coincidence that the ur-rumor about shooting is “the murderer was a registered Democrat!” That’s their episteme, their ethos, stripped naked. Bad shit is done by some other kind of people; kulaks and wreckers.

Mother Mosque of America Requests A Visit From Donald Trump

The Mother Mosque of America in Cedar Rapids is reaching out to Donald Trump about his views on Muslims.

The Mother Mosque building in NW Cedar Rapids. Local Muslims reacted on Tuesday to Donald Trump’s comments about banning Muslims from entering the U.S.

[…]

One of [Trump’s] plans that has received much criticism is banning all Muslims from entering the country. Trump says the ban would be temporary and would have exceptions. Trump doubled down on this proposal in his first television ad that began airing Tuesday.

That ad and other comments prompted a response from Tawil.

[…]

Tawil wants to stop the negative comments that are creating fear of anti-Muslim backlash in the community. The Imam said Trump paints all Muslims with one brush, which is creating confusion.

The Imam said he wants to talk to Trump, and the presidential contender can pick whether that’s a public event or a private event.

Tawil spends his days at the Mother Mosque of America, which was the first facility created as a mosque in America. It was built back in the 1930s.

[…]

So, what’s the chance that Trump would actually visit?

Hopefully, CBS doesn’t try to pull a CSI, and get rid of nearly everyone, while dragging the show along for a number of seasons.

Only one show I know of can survive the cast leaving, along with the writers, and that is Doctor Who.

Actually, over here, one of the longest running TV dramas was a police procedural show “Taggart”, that not only survived the death of the titular character (due to the real-life death of the actor playing him), but actually lasted longer after his death, despite his famous catchphrase being what most people remember about the series.

There’s been a murder!

re: #306 freetoken

They botched it. You don’t add to the nucleus in fusion. You force two smaller nuclei together to make a heavier nucleus; the process releases energy and mass as the new nucleus becomes stable. Roughly, 4H —> 1He, but there are several steps in between.

Fission happens because the nucleus has too much mass/energy to remain stable. A little nudge will “split the atom,” releasing the extra mass and energy in a big kaboom, or preferably in a slow burn for a reactor.

Self-sustaining means the fusion reaction doesn’t stop, i.e., the Sun. H-bombs are not self-sustaining, once the kaboom part is finished.

Things I’ve learned in the past 24 hours. The right wing cognitive dissociation from reality is complete. A complete and utter lack of empathy and desire to find ulterior motives to everything the President does overrides common sense.

After all, this is a GOP that thinks that repealing Obamacare is somehow going to improve health care for millions of people, or that universal background checks somehow infringes on the 2A.

And it’s the 2A EO that has thrown the right into a complete and utter meltdown. They’ll bleat on and on about how executive orders are unconstitutional, except that the facts and legal reality show that it’s an accepted practice for over 200 years. In fact, Obama has used it less than any of his modern predecessors going back to Grover Cleveland’s first term (on a per annum basis). He’d need to issue a more than 150 EOs in the next year in order to top Reagan’s tally of 381 during his 8 year term, and that’s just not going to happen. Obama currently sits at 227.

The GOP has gone into meltdown mode when Obama uses an EO that basically cribs the language of a Reagan EO on immigration. They’ll go on a meltdown here.

Basically, the GOP doesn’t want government to do anything for the next year and change - they’ve abdicated governing as witnessed by their repeated and renewed push to repeal Obamacare (for the 60+ time), claiming that this is what constitutes policy. And when Obama acts in the absence of Congressional action, they fight it because it once again spotlights that Congress under the GOP is a do-nothing, know-nothing crowd.

That too gets to the heart of the matter. This GOP is lacking any sense of what it means to govern. They want to slash and burn government. They want to cut safety net programs. They make up babbling BS about how Obama is cutting defense spending while funding PP, which doesn’t even pass the smell test. They’ve got candidates for the White House who are members of Congress who don’t even bother to show up to vote, let alone attend foreign policy hearings about the pressing issues of the day.

Heck, you’ve got Rubio claiming that it doesn’t make any sense to vote as a member of Congress, which brings into question why he’s even in Congress as a US Senator in the first place. He’s just one of a new breed of GOPers who want to shut down government by any means necessary - Rubio’s methods are sheer neglect and willful indifference. Cruz’s methods are far more brute force - he wants shutdown and confrontation after confrontation, and doesn’t care that the consequences cost more than if government remained open during that time.

Add in the TP contingent and you’ve got a GOP that refuses to govern, or wants to roll back decades of socio-economic progress, all to preserve a status quo where a select few had accumulated power and rights that everyone else could only wish for.

We see this with the GOP action on SSM. We see it with women’s rights. We see it with abortion and birth control. We see it with their inane tax policies (flat taxes and other schemes that shift tax burdens from the rich on to everyone else).

Those are clear differences and distinctions between the GOP and Democrats, and there are consequences to voting and elections - or not voting. That’s why this and every election matters - at all levels of government.

Even with the ongoing Oregon domestic terrorist standoff, we see GOP fingerprints - as GOPers have backed efforts to try and divest federal lands or undermine the Wilderness Act and other federal protections for federal lands. These are folks who are more than willing to throw up oil rigs in and around national parks including Arches and Canyonlands - heck, you are already finding rigs and pipelines on the drive to Canyonlands and other mineral exploitation would occur at parks and their boundaries if the GOP had their way.

Add to that the GOP indifference to clean air and water and you’ve got a recipe for disaster (which is compounded by their anti-science anti-global warming babbling bs).

It isn’t hyperbole to say that this is a GOP that threatens the nation with its policies. Because the consequences of their acts are easily sussed out. Just look at Flint Michigan, where GOP Gov. Synder put money ahead of public safety. Instead of maintaining a water supply that was safe, it switched the city over to the river, which caused lead to leach out of pipes, causing widespread lead poisoning. All to save a few bucks on treating the water.

The societal cost will be huge, but it’s off the books to the government at the moment. That wont last, as those injured will have lifetime injuries and costs.

Germany is going through massive attacks to its people by the migrants allowed to enter the country. New Years Eve was a disaster. THINK!

This is a major scandal in Germany: the chastity of German womanhood is at risk!

The sort of thing that hits at a gut level. And is certainly fueling the arguments of the NDP, Pegida, AfD and other right-wing groups in Germany and Europe.

And there were some major fuck-ups: the police were unable to control the situation after initially dispersing the mob.

And needless to say, if those women had been properly armed, none of this would’ve happened…

Some doubt about the H-bomb claim in that the seismic signature was reportedly identical to their last underground atomic bomb test. Sure we will hear more once the experts have time to parse the data properly.

It’s possible that this was yet another fizzle. Or they were attempting a completely different design that was miniaturized, but there’s no way to know for sure what they were doing. If they were claiming a thermonuclear detonation, we would expect to see a far larger seismic event. We’d also have to wait for overflights to see what isotopes were released (if any). The US and Russians have a very long history of figuring out these kinds of tests, so they’ll look closely at what was done.

My guess is that it’s yet another fizzle. Even with Iranian or Pakistani involvement, the North Koreans have numerous technological hurdles to overcome.

That said, they’ve been playing with nuclear weapons tech for 20 years, and it took less time than that for the US to go from scratch to a thermonuclear weapons power. Same for the Russians. They physics is known, but the technology is tough to master.

What it also says is that Jong Un needs something to divert attention from the fact that their economy remains a mess and that crop failures are a dire threat to the survival of the nation.

Disagree. The problem with this view is that you’re choosing pay it later over pay it now. Say the worlds greatest neurosurgeon was born in a poor family. If we, as a society don’t help pay for that child’s education, and the child gets educated, there will be a lot of people who will never receive the benefit of their skills. If the child manages to go through school, incurring the cost of her education, society will be paying for it in by having to pay the additional wage needed to pay off the school loans, at the future cost. In either way, society, and the wealthy, loses.

Even if you don’t do the extreme of a neurosurgeon, would you rather have one educated auto mechanic to have to go to, or 100 to choose from?

It is actually much worse than that…

(Poor) People pay money to take part in the lottery, lottery money is added to the budget for education… and then money from other sources is taken out of the budget for education so that it can be spent on tax breaks/something else thanks to the fact that there’s no rule saying that the education budget has to have a floor value with extra money from lottery added on top of it, lottery money does nothing to help education.

As someone who has put four kids through college (though only two finished), I can say with some authority that determining how much a family can pay for a child’s education is not an easy task. That’s why the financial aid forms ask for far more details than even the 1040 does, and even then overestimate a family’s ability to pay. Working out those details for every single school age child would be a nightmare.

Go soak your head. Something Donald Trump and I understand but you seem to be missing is that these sorts of attacks on women are a whole block of ‘broken windows’. If robbers and rapists think they can get away with this sort thing then they will do it more and more.

What Trump gets deliberately wrong is that the answer is not deportations in this case. The NYPD, the police department of his hometown, has already shown how such incidents are to be dealt with:

1. “Flood the zone”: Put together a heavy police presence at the next event where such filth are liable to attack and keep larger than previously normal numbers of police at such events for the foreseeable future.

2. Find the scum that did it: Look for witnesses and security footage and don’t forget what information you get. When members of such a predatory gang are next apprehended, bring in witnesses from previous crimes and see if they can give an ID. Arresting and prosecuting the scum who rape and rob is critical to crime prevention.

3. Data-driven policing (COMPSAT): Keep track of where such crimes occur, and who the victims and preps are likely to be. If you’ve got a suspect you can’t nail for one of the sexual assaults, have the cops in the area keep an eye on him and look for related crimes he may be committing.

This is how you deal with assholes like those rapists and thugs.

That was part of the problem: the police were overburdened and failed to keep on top of the situation even after they initially dispersed the mob.

Part of this was because a large number of Federal policemen normally posted at the main train station in Cologne had been diverted to guarding the borders.

And yes, Germany, having take in nearly 1 million refugees, is in over its head. That fact is going undermentioned. I would say that overall they are doing an admirable job of demonstrating humanity and compassion in a world that seems to place little value on such values.

I didn’t mean to imply that I was offended by your statement. Property taxes fund education because they are the one thing controlled by the school districts, but the state will occasionally go “hey, everyone’s asking too much”. So, what we get is one district asking parents to send additional school supplies, and Allen High School sending it’s band to the Rose Bowl parade without having to do any fundraising (when my brother and sister went with their band back in 1990, they basically fundraised for a year to pay for the trip).

The problem with the Catholic church itself is that they chose to deal with the problem by covering it up. They should have allowed the clergy to be prosecuted rather than trying to hide the abuse (sounds exactly like the problem we’re having with police here).

It is the problem that is inherent in any authoritarian, from-the-top-down organization. To admit guilt is to admit weakness in the structure. We see a similar pattern in the military: it is only dealt with when it grows so egregious that it affects recruitment.

I live in Texas. You don’t have to tell me. We just passed a property tax cut even though the state Supreme Court keeps telling Texas that it’s violating its own constitution by underfunding education.

No problem!

Ohio has been under court order for failing to properly fund schools for almost 20 years. No one in our GOP dominated government has done anything about it. Why? Business as usual. The local communities have schools funded by local taxes and since a good portion of the GOP voters are in well-funded school districts in wealthy locals…it’s all good.

Wiki - DeRolph v. State (Of Ohio)

DeRolph v. State was a landmark case in Ohio constitutional law in which the Ohio Supreme Court ruled that the state’s method for funding public education was unconstitutional.[1] Handed down on March 24, 1997, the 4-3 opinion said that the state funding system “fails to provide for a thorough and efficient system of common schools,” as required by the Ohio Constitution, and directed the state to find a remedy.[2] The court would look at the case several times over the next 12 years before it relinquished jurisdiction, but the underlying problems with the school funding system remain to this day.[1]

Lovely isn’t it? And it isn’t even a Black and White thing. The schools that brought the suit are in Perry County which is basically getting into Ohio’s Appalachian Whites area in southeast Ohio.

One thing that might force change though is Johnny Kasich’s great creative accounting that allowed him to claim the state budget is balanced. Yeah, sure was…by cutting a lot of the monies that also helped pay for schools. That of course has brought demand on the local communities to both raise taxes and cut programs and charge for sports, etc. But hey…your Ohio State taxes are lower and your fantastical governator can crow to America how he should be President.

If one has no problem admitting that there is a systemic problem with child abuse among the Catholic clergy, one should also have no problem admitting the sexual harassment problem among male migrants from countries whose cultures are much less woman-friendly than the Western ones.

That can also be flipped so that if you have a problem with male migrants you can also have problems with what has gone on in the church. Right?

So I finally read something that explains why they’re not cutting power in OR. Cutting power to the reserve alone isn’t possible. Cutting power affects residents throughout the county.

I’m so used to city life and electric grids that didn’t cross my mind.

Sounds like a pretty lame excuse to me. They have to be able to isolate that feeder line somehow without effecting the whole county. Opening a switch or pulling the fuses where it splits off of the main distribution line comes to mind.

I live in Texas. You don’t have to tell me. We just passed a property tax cut even though the state Supreme Court keeps telling Texas that it’s violating its own constitution by underfunding education.

My son just left teaching this year after 6.5 years to follow his dream (sports writing, he is with MSNBC now, hooray). He and his wife (who still teaches) were/are in the San Antonio school district. He did not mind teaching that much but wanted to follow what he really wanted to do. But both of them said that the state is really trying to put the screws to teachers and school systems. Guess it is good politics to keep a majority dumb and poor in Texas.

Exactly. No matter how culturally evolved or progressive we consider ourselves to be, it seems that a man’s/culture’s/country’s honor still lies between the legs of women.

It’s weird. I suspect it’s because it touches on a very basic evolutionary, survival of the fittest sort of thing—i.e. a woman always passes her genetic material on to her child, but men have to live with the danger that some other male may come along and impregnate “their” women, thus the “foreign” genetic material is passed on instead.

If you were going to truly be correct, you would say schilling for the rich, since this is a way to get the poor to pay for their own children’s educations.

My favourite author points out that lotteries are a cry of despair on the part of governments. It’s an unconscious realization that they no longer have the power to tax economic activity within their sphere of power.

From the moment a government encourages its citizenry to finance the state by gambling–which means by idle dreaming–instead of through creativity, work and productivity, the state is in an unacknowledged crisis.

Like to see a link to whatever it was that says that because as an ex-commercial/industrial electrician it doesn’t pass the smell test. Granted that it may be true that the only point they could disconnect the facility from the mains without shutting off another user may be too close to the gunmen to do it safely. But every connection from main distribution lines, above or below ground, has an accessible disconnection point of some type.

Well shit. I can’t and won’t stand by what I read because it wasn’t sourced. It just made sense to me since it’s so rural I thought there would be that interconnectivity.

The wingnuts are pulling the same shit the did back in ‘14 with Cliven Bundy, taking his hogwash and running it as “fact.” In this case, they’re presenting the legal defense the Hammonds presented as “fact,” that it was just a “controlled burn” that got out of hand and ended up on federal land. To believe that, you have to believe that their grandson/nephew is a liar who perjured himself just to help the Feds convict his kin. That the accusations of poaching and deliberate arson are something the Feds cooked up so they could throw the Hammonds in the slammer and thus financially ruin them.

What is with us, Dark, is that your party is about to nominate for President a dangerously inexperienced fascist, who is winning support by appealing to exactly the same dangerous impulses that Hitler appealed to, and that is not exaggeration.

You all have reassured us that he’ll flame out, and that it’s just a momentary flirtation, and in the end you’ll all fall in line behind someone who’s sane. But he keeps building support, and a lot of those who claimed he was a joke with no chance at the nomination are nevertheless saying they’ll vote for him anyway if he’s the nominee.

And even if he does fail, look who’s in second place - Cruz, who represents all the same policies but with less bombast, and you have said you would vote for him if he’s nominated. He’s a horrible person, Dark, and his policies are the comprised of all the worst ideas of the Right for the last 80 years. And you’ll vote for him.

If you’d vote for Cruz, why should we believe you won’t vote for Trump?

Lotto? My wife won five grand on a scratcher. I’m sure we are ahead. We buy in a tiny bit from time to time. I’ll probably buy a superlotto ticket. Am I gambling? Sure. Is that gambling at all comparable to going to the horse races, or a casino? I don’t feel that way, I find that point overblown.

The government gets the money. Is that so bad? If you think so look out that’s where your tax monies go. Horse racing has the animal abuse issue. And where the profits go. 1%er sport etc., etc.

Buying a Lotto ticket is a strictly voluntary act. We are talking about adults. There is no physical addiction. Makes for a thin argument to end it.

Mostly everyone here at LGF wishes you would acknowledge your party has a huge problem in its base and Trump has tapped it. I don’t think you have ever admitted Trump is speaking for many right of center.

As Joke Scarborough keeps going on and on…and on and on about…Trump will most likely be your party’s nominee. If he wins Iowa and New Hampshire it may well be over for all the rest. Maybe you hold out hope it won’t happen. I think you better start making plans it will.

The reason for ending the lottery is that it’s a way for state governments to avoid properly funding government. And by proper I mean taxing those who can afford to pay more.

True, Hillary’s right of center (though she said yesterday she was a “progressive Democrat”…just one who voted for a war in Iraq, has strong ties to Wall Street, and thought the Keystone XL wasn’t all that bad of an idea). There’s that little issue of the way he acted as mayor, that managed to get an entire TV show based on it.

As for the rest of it, I love the idea that “Center” is some fixed point at some imaginary location. It would be a bit like defining median income at $200K and deciding that anyone below that sucks.

You may have noticed that there’s one teensy tiny problem, with this particular editor’s note, however.

Unfortunately for DC, people in Pakistan speak Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, Urdu, and Balochi. In fact, English is also an official language in the country alongside Urdu, although last year the Pakistani government announced plans to promote usage of Urdu over it instead. At any rate, do you know what no one in Pakistan speaks? “Pakistanian”, as it does not exist.

I can’t speak for “a lot of Democrats”, but I generally focus much more on economic policy when it comes to determining “left … right” positioning. In those terms, I think the US “center” has moved right after a leftmost point in the 60s/70s. FDR was economically left of center for his time (and in fact he moved the center leftwards).

So, Ted Cruz tries his hand at foreign policy, and thinks up a combination that makes no sense. Cruz says that the US should work with China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan on the North Korea conundrum.

Anyone want to find the problem with this formulation? Oh wait. I’ll do the work for you. Cruz wants to replace Russia with Taiwan in the 6-Party Talks that have been ongoing for more than a decade in response to the North Korean insistence on being a nuclear power.

What does Cruz gain from adding Taiwan and removing Russia? Headaches. China and Taiwan are antagonists to each other, and Taiwan has no sway over North Korea - far less than even what Russia does, and Russia shares a border. That puts Russia over Taiwan on proximity alone, since any crisis in North Korea could directly affect Russia, such as yet another crop failure and people attempting to flee the Hermit Kingdom.

This shows once again that Cruz doesn’t get foreign policy or geopolitics.

Governor Cuomo has ordered all the homeless to be taken off the streets and housed during cold weather. City weighs the use of using the Armory.

Dan Reagan has been living at a 350-bed men’s shelter at the Bedford Atlantic Armory in Brooklyn. He said the environment works for him.

“The place is huge. It’s a really nice building,” Reagan said. “I mean, they could hold a lot more people if they really had to.”

The armory in Park Slope is one of a handful that the city uses as full-blown shelters. Former Department of Homeless Services Deputy Commissioner Robert Mascali believes the city and state could easily provide shelters for the homeless by opening armories as emergency drop-in shelters.

Now we are arming the homeless, will the madness ever end?!

Everyone stand back. Dark is on the attack!

Me, I’m still waiting to see how he is going to dump all over Obama’s speech and Executive actions yesterday?

Will it be more party line and Guns are next to Godliness?

Or, is he being quiet about it because he knows it will be unpopular?

I think at this particular blog nobody has a problem with admitting the systemic sex abuse problems in the RCC.

Definitely not. But the Catholic Church sex abuse doesn’t garner the same visceral response from certain people here that the tragic events in Germany have. That’s my issue, hence my “SCUM!!! THUGS!!!!!” post.

I’m thinking BWS could shed some light on this.

I’ve been away for a few hours, but did a bit of researching and learn that Oregon Rural Electric Cooperative Association serves the various fish and wildlife facilities and 80% of cooperative customers have the new Smart Meter technology.
With that, the power can be cut off remotely to a specific customer. Power usage can also be monitored remotely. There’s no need to physically go out to the refuge unless there is actual damage requiring repairs.

And when Cruz “tells reporters” these totally inaccurate, bogus things, do these “reporters” ever follow up with any questions challenging the truth (or, in some cases, sanity) of said claims?

Assumes facts not in evidence, like the reporter knowing what the facts actually are. Or that they leave it to their editors/fact-checkers to figure out (or ignore entirely).

As someone who works in law enforcement, I find these people galling. They hold themselves out as idealists rebelling against “oppressive” government. An unstated reason they don’t like government is they want to be able to shirk their creditors. I’ve found that a lot of their ilk are notorious deadbeats. It’s not just creditors. It also includes child support. It should come as no surprise that these people have failed relationships.

They also plan to tell the locals how to have local control. In case they, the non-locals, ever leave.

That’s one of my longstanding quips. Had Romney been elected, he would have swapped out Obama and changed it to Romney, and all this nonsense about the ACA would disappear. They were for the individual mandate before they decided it was unconstitutional. Heritage and President Bush both suggested it as a way to get individual responsibility for individual’s health care - right until Heritage and GOP decided that opposing it makes more political sense.

It doesn’t, but 60+ votes later, and the GOP is still carrying on about how the ACA is somehow violating the law.

My town plans to install those meters over the objections of a woman who said she develops a mild fever if she spends a half an hour in a building equipped with one. Radiation, ya know.

The reason for ending the lottery is that it’s a way for state governments to avoid properly funding government. And by proper I mean taxing those who can afford to pay more.

The missing link is the likely poor taxation policies with or without lottery funds. Hundreds of ways to tax the poor, very few if any voluntary. Homeless or billionaire, we all pay sales taxes.
