As for the Donald, I’ve never been able to sit through him more than a few seconds. Thirty-six seconds of him bloviating was quite enough. Asshat.
Well gang, I’m off to bed. With a little bit of luck we’ll finish up the inventory tomorrow at the shop (the counting is done, it’s just a matter of reconciling it against what the computer SAYS we have). So far no real surprises, like last year when I found a 1300 dollar regulator set in the back of a storage bin that wasn’t even listed as being in the system.

I saw a lot but it was scarcely glorious. In the convention hall, the establishment shut down dissidents, beat up reporters, and muscled Hubert Humphrey into the nomination. Outside, Mayor Daley’s police goons launched an epic pogrom against anti-war demonstrators. I can still smell the tear gas. The experience had a lot to do with my decades-long defection to the Republicans, the sainted memory of my great-uncle Sam Rayburn notwithstanding. There really are any of a number of nightmare scenarios for the GOP right now, going into the general election. Trump could drop out and go third party, he could drop out and refuse to endorse, he could win the nomination and then select a similarly loony running mate, there could be a brokered convention, etc.
I don’t mean to suggest that we would descend to the madness of Germany. What I think can happen, and it is in fact something we have already seen happen, is the willingness of the populace to accept an extreme executive. During the W administration, we saw the executive run amok with little checks and balances from the other two branches. The Congress was too afraid to challenge the rush to war in Iraq, both the Congress and the Courts didn’t put a stop to war crimes or domestic spying. People find it hard to believe that Trump gets the support he does, and even if he doesn’t get the nomination, he is dragging the GOP farther away from reality. Millions of people vote against their own economic interests just because they hate the other side. Money is distorting how we get to see what happens around us.

I skied the men’s downhill course at Beaver Creek for the first time this winter today…LIKE A BOSS! There were three skiers who were tip-toeing in their boots to the edge of “The Brink” (a steep drop-off that is a pure sheet of ice for about 30 or so yards into a hard right turn) and I went into the pitch without even thinking about it. We got a few inches of news snow so I was able to find some snow to link a couple of turns. Still, with that water-injected World Cup race surface, that icy face never holds snow!

Fellow Masshole here—and many of my dad’s family were from Salem (one was referred to as “Aunt Minnie in the Closet.” I believe it was because she was sort of a recluse. The only time I ever saw her, she had the labels still on the outside sleeve of her coat.)

And no one talks about policy anymore, only politics.
I stopped being a conservative a few years ago - because I realized Obamacare is a good deal for just about everyone, because the strong Federal response to the Great Recession was the correct one, and because human AGW is real and we have to do something starting now. But mostly because I hate the freak show the GOP has become. I guess they were always like that, but more dormant. Maybe Fox has given them a platform to let their freak flag fly, so now we know what they are.
And now the GOP front-runner is the most loathsome, amoral, load-mouthed, no principles bully imaginable. And the GOP is eating it up, in spite of the fact Trump hasn’t uttered one true thing, and every single statement he’s said about what he would do as president isn’t going to happen. AND IT’S SO OBVIOUS, how can these Trump supporters be so stupid? How can any human being be that stupid?

His manager was informed of the risk before he made the decision, and instead chose to override the city council and roll the dice with people’s health and safety. The Sheboygan County sheriff is standing by his decision to hire a convicted killer as a radio technician, despite questions in the community about whether it is appropriate for someone with that type of record to be working for law enforcement.
“I’m not going to throw him under the bus. I take responsibility for bringing him on,” Sheriff Todd Priebe said of the technician, Rafael George Macias. “If I had known the gruesome details, I may not have taken him on, but what he brings to our agency is nothing but positive.”
Macias was 20 and an airman at Carswell Air Force Base in Texas when he pleaded guilty to killing and dismembering his live-in girlfriend, Julia Adams, also 20, in 1977, according to news reports from the time. Police linked Macias to the crime after he reported her missing, the reports say.
Macias later told police he strangled Adams out of jealousy and put her body into a bathtub, cut it in half with a hacksaw and stuffed it into an Air Force packing crate. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison but was released after 13 after being given credit for good behavior.
So TransCanada started working on a pipeline it didn’t have final approval to build and didn’t have all the land it needed to build on, is now suing us for not giving them that approval, and is claiming $15 billion in damages for work they did without the guarantee that they’d be allowed to finish.

Btw, I was an eyewitness to the ‘68 Democratic Convention riots in Chicago. My mother was a delegate and the folks took me along in the hope that I would see the populist process in all its glory. I saw a lot but it was scarcely glorious. In the convention hall, the establishment shut down dissidents, beat up reporters, and muscled Hubert Humphrey into the nomination. Outside, Mayor Daley’s police goons launched an epic pogrom against anti-war demonstrators. I can still smell the tear gas. The experience had a lot to do with my decades-long defection to the Republicans, the sainted memory of my great-uncle Sam Rayburn notwithstanding. I actually remember thinking, “Well, Uncle Sam, sir, if you could see this, you might turn Republican too.” My recovery started at the time of the Clinton impeachment, which I thought was a farce, and accelerated when the Bush/Cheney invasion failed to turn up any WMD in Iraq.

That makes the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets more volatile than the NYSE, for example, where trading is dominated by institutional investors that are less skittish.
Besides, China wants to look like it has a stable economy, given that nearly everyone outside China is saying it’s going to collapse.

City authorities identified some suspects in the Cologne New Year’s Eve attacks as asylum seekers from Syria, detaining or questioning some of them, according to reports by local newspaper “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” and national daily “Die Welt,” which published an online preview of investigations by its “Welt am Sonntag” Sunday paper.
According to the newspapers’ reports, citing officers on duty on New Year’s Eve, officials checked the IDs of at least 100 people present at Cologne’s central station on December 31 after their behavior became conspicuous. Seventy-one people were identified, 11 people were remanded into custody and 32 criminal complaints were registered, according to the Welt am Sonntag (WamS) report.
“There were, quite to the contrary of what was said publicly, identity checks on numerous people,” the WamS quoted an unnamed officer as saying. “Most of them were recently-arrived asylum seekers.”
The first internal police report on the event - a so-called “Wichtige Ereignis Meldung” (“important event announcement”) - spoke of a crowd mainly of “North African and Arab” origin. According to the Kölner Stadt-anzeiger, the officer leading the team at the station wanted the report to include mention of the Syrians and asylum seekers, but the senior officer writing the “WE-Meldung” decided not to, saying it would be “politically awkward.”

It ended working out since McAuliffe ended up beating Cuccinelli for governor and Kaine beat George Allen and has been a better senator than Webb was but Webb’s attitude pisses me off. I’ve never been a big fan of his. He has some of my gratitude for ending George Allen’s presidential aspirations but at the same time, I don’t like the guy at all.
Frankly I don’t think Webb really has the right to accuse the Democratic Party of abandoning him and his ideals when he wasn’t really a Democrat that long. He had supported George Allen in 2000 for example and George W. Bush for President.

Most real libertarians should have those same beliefs. In my mind, that’s how I separate a real libertarian from a fake libertarian. So, of course, wingnuts will label him progressive and an enemy.
I know, I was mocking the wingut “libertarians” who are anti-gay, anti-immigrant, and anti-choice more than actual Libertarians with that statement. But yeah they’ll see him as a liberal because of that.

Heartbreaking. I saw a doctor interviewed last night, (probably on NPR) and thought at the time, how could anyone not understand these people feeling compelled to flee? We need to have more msm coverage of their plight.
And all the bombs falling, ours, and our allies against ISIS, as well as Russia. We see precious little of it on television. I don’t enjoy seeing carnage, but people in this country need to be reminded on a daily basis what the refugees are running from.
Why isn’t it a bigger story? Is it because we have no “Boots on the ground”?
