Ammon Bundy Says the Bible Wanted Him to Take Over a Bird Sanctuary

These people are not right in the head
Wingnuts • Views: 53,571

Here’s a reminder that one of the disturbingly weird motivations behind the domestic terrorist takeover of Oregon’s Malheur Wildlife Refuge is plain old right wing religious fanaticism.

“We read in Genesis where God gives the earth to man, he did not give it to government, he gave it to man to care and to cultivate, and that means to take care of it and to use it. That is necessary and that is what the Lord has done.”

Bundy went on to say that the government is violating “scriptural” precepts by controlling land, before arguing that his militia needed to use “shock and awe” to “remove the chains of tyranny and the chains of oppression so the people can regain a hope.”

I’d think he was a shrewd guy, using religion to gather dimmer people to his cause, but his goals are so bonkers, and he actually thinks he’ll achieve them, so I think he’s actually mentally ill.

Two years before, few attending this event knew who David Bowie was. He had been singing and playing rock & roll since 1962, and making quaint and eccentric albums since 1967, to little attention. His progress had proved so fitful that he wondered if he wanted to continue with it. He saw himself, he said, as an actor; he wanted to use his face and body, his voice and songs to play roles, outlandish ones. Then, in 1971, he realized he could combine it all — music and theater — into one character: Ziggy Stardust, an otherworldly being who came to Earth to save it, but instead found rock & roll; who sang about change and pain, and played the music better than anybody; whose vanity soared out of range, and who had the charisma to fuck anybody he desired, woman or man; and whose aspirations delivered him to ruin, his best purposes unfinished. That character had made David Bowie famous, and it formed an audience and community around his singularity.

Because in the end Conservatives don’t want to live in their own fantasy world. Conservatives love living in the real, more Liberal World with all of its trappings, the music, the food, the arts, the social programs they publicly deride but privately collect, and being included amongst “the cool” people.

Truth is, a Conservative world does exist in various pockets around the world, but virtually nobody wants to actually live there. They just like and long for the fantasy.

So coming home from Friday night out-to-dinner we drove through one of the most violent storms I’ve ever experienced. Hail slamming the car, sounding like baseballs hitting the roof. Visibility only a few feet with a solid wall of water and hail. In my friend’s brand new, pristine car, less than two months old. We sounded like guys in a comedy watching a bad fistfight or something… BAM! OOO! BAM! BAM! OOO! OOO! She’s going ow! Ow! Ow! as we crawled down the freeway… can’t stop there… BAM! OOO! in unison.

We finally got home safely and I’ve never been more ready for this rum ‘n coke. I fear seeing her brand new “baby” in the sunlight tomorrow. :(

I’ve been watching the internecine warfare on FR between the Trumpets and the Cruziers. Add in the whole “Birther” thing, and it’s amusing as hell. When Cruz wins Iowa, and Trump takes NH, I suspect that it will become downright (more) toxic than it is now.

Oooopsie!

Two Texas politicians made public details of an investigation into a terrorism suspect while it was still in progress, potentially jeopardizing the inquiry, three sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick released details from documents that were still under court seal, the sources said.

Not to long ago, I posted this to some wingnut acquaintances of mine.

I’m surprised that you aren’t reacting to Obama’s latest statement on gun control… “I have never believed in the general practice of carrying weapons. I do not believe in the general promiscuous toting of guns. I think it should be sharply restricted and only under licenses.”

After they went 7 kinds of batshit crazy about “He’s destroying the Constitution, yada yada”, I simply posted to them… “Oh my mistake, that was a statement made in the 30’s by the then president of the NRA as he was gathering support for FDR’s Federal Firearms Act of 34 and the Gun Control Act of 38”

Yea, I’m a bit of dick when I get bored.

Oregon standoff: Idaho group arrives to ‘secure perimeter, prevent Waco-style situation’

Curtiss and Chris McIntire, another group spokesman, called the situation a “double-edged sword” - the perimeter is meant to protect the occupiers from an outside attack but also to protect the Harney County community from those who arrive in solidarity with Bundy’s cause but may be prone to violence, they said. The Idaho group is here to keep the situation “peaceful” and reassure the community that it isn’t in danger, they said.

Most of these “ranchers” are bigtime bible thumpers and homeskoolrs. I see them on Facebook, receive the same newspapers and magazines, attend many of the same events, and they’re always tripping over each other’s dicks to out-Jesus each other. And let us not forget Cowboy-effing-Church - it’s like a necessary amino acid, like Lysine to the Jurassic Park dinosaurs. From there, the babyklukkers and gun freaks all converge. It’s truly a freak show under glass.

I posted this before, but here’s your typical - not atypical - anti-government wingnut rancher: Meet Calvin Greenup. I think in the wingnut bullshit bingo game, Calvin’s scorecard is completely full.

There’s a secondary prize of “only” 1 million. Frankly, if God’s listening, I’d rather win that. Pay all my bills off, get a nice home and some toys. Set aside a trust for my son’s college tuition even at someplace expensive. Give some to a couple of deserving charities, and then go back to work again. Best of all possible outcomes.

One thing I really admire about Snow Peak is that unlike a lot of foreign companies that sell products in America they’re all like “Wait, you don’t know Japanese? That must suck for your sad little bitch ass, you should probably learn Japanese or something.” I mean, that’s what I assume they’re saying here. It’s a refreshing alternative to the bad translation problem, just not even try.

They do this with all their stuff. I love that the single instruction actually that got translated into English is “Outdoor use only,” because their lawyers were probably like “Wait a sec, these are Americans we’re dealing with here, some asshole is going to try roasting marshmallows in their bedroom on this thing unless we tell them not to.”

I think they added powerball sometime around 2007 or so-there was some mutual exclusion deal between Powerball and MegaMillions where you could only have one or the other, eventually the two sides hammered deals out and both became pretty much nationwide with 6 states (AK, AL, HI, MS, UT, NV) not allowing either game.

Milo is a completely amoral, hedonistic nihilist. He’ll write whatever the argument of the moment calls for. He believes in nothing beyond the paycheck he gets from the niche he’s current found with Breitbart. For instance, from that link:

“I’d describe myself as 90-95% gay. I would never have chosen to be this way. No one would choose it. You’d have to be mad. “

However he also wrote this diametrically opposite take on the issue recently when he was pretending he was going to go straight.

I’ll never forget the precise moment I chose to be gay. It was the endpoint in a process of rebellion against my white middle-class parents that climaxed with me smuggling a black drug dealer into my bedroom at 3 a.m. on a school night aged 15.

Today, thanks to society’s endless mollycoddling and celebration of “alternative” lifestyles, the joy of rebellion is drying up for me. You see, I only plumped for homosexuality to irritate my parents. But now even they are fine with it. A few years ago, my mum said, perhaps cannily, “All I want is for you to be happy.”

That came as devastating news. Because my sexuality was never about maternal acceptance, but rather the mischievous and incorrigible pursuit of social censure and the threat of being cut out of the will. Now my gayness was not only roundly applauded by wider society but even my own parents, what was the point?

So I find myself in the perplexing position of asking: what’s next? Casting my eye around modern Britain, in the last few months I’ve been on the look-out for the most marginalised, ridiculed and socially ostracised slice of the population. And I think I’ve nailed it: it’s time for me to become a straight white male.

Dude is pretty close to a pure psychopath.

So far the GOP has sucked at stopping Trump from sucking up all of the suckers and if they don’t stop sucking at it in the end they are going to be sucking up to Trump because being suck-ups to money and power is what they do best.

Boy there’s a lot of sucking going on in the Republican camp!

And of course, being the psycopath he is, it’s a lie:

“I had all the characteristics of a human being—flesh, blood, skin, hair—but my depersonalization was so intense, had gone so deep, that my normal ability to feel compassion had been eradicated, the victim of a slow, purposeful erasure. I was simply imitating reality, a rough resemblance of a human being, with only a dim corner of my mind functioning”

You don’t have to be particularly quiet to sneak up on humans. You can even be stinky out in the woods and other humans wouldn’t notice. Modern humans are almost entirely visual and pathetically unaware of other sensorial cues. Easily distracted as well. Use those traits and lead your human targets where you want them, just like we use a coyote’s traits to trap them.

Whereas the German police dropped the ball, the Finnish police did good:

Finnish police reported on Friday that women in its capital city experienced an unusually high level of sexual harassment on New Year’s Eve. After receiving tips about asylum-seekers’ plans to sexually harass women, police said they greatly increased the number of patrolling officers ahead of the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
“They had bad purposes in mind,” Helsinki deputy police chief Ilkka Koskimaki told DW, saying those criminal intentions included “sexual abuse, robberies and theft.” He said there were multiple attacks on New Year’s Eve, including three sexual assaults around the central train station. He added that 15 refugees were taken into custody.

Yeah, it looks like the Polizei - especially in Köln - dropped the ball. I chalk it up to the fact that they were basically overwhelmed by the situation going on pretty much everywhere around them. Why didn’t they call for backup? Was there any backup available?

In any event, this incident, and others that occurred in Germany as well during New Year’s Eve, is going to generate some serious backlash.

Because taking the cultural background into account is apparently “racist” or something. The talk of “rape culture” should only be confined to the realm of Western males. And the police should be told to avoid mentions of crimes committed by refugees in order not to give the right their propaganda “meat”. Because cover-ups have always worked.

And after the hard right comes to power, we’ll make an innocent face, wring our hands and say: “Nobody could have expected this!”.

Like my dad always said when it comes to politics, “It ain’t the crime that’ll get you in really deep shit - it’s the cover-up. That’s when people start howling for blood.” (He was referring to Nixon in that instance, but it’s generally applicable to any and all cover-ups)

And in this instance, it also serves to lend credence to PEGIDA and other hard-right groups; they’ve been talking endlessly about how German officialdom (LE, the media, the government) has been covering up, or at least downplaying, such matters. Now they’re all gonna be crowing about how they’ve been vindicated in their beliefs.

Cologne’s police force was severely criticized after officers failed to prevent dozens of women from being robbed and molested by groups of men gathered at the city’s central station. Chief of Police Wolfgang Albers was specifically accused of not informing the public about the attacks and withholding the countries of origin of the assaulters.
City mayor Henriette Reker also distanced herself from the police head, saying she was not given a complete picture of the security situation that night.
“I cannot accept the fact that as the mayor of this city, I get this information from the media, especially regarding the origin of the suspects who were investigated,” Reker said in an official statement. Her “trust in the police leadership” had been “severely shaken” following the revelations, she added.

Dollar and a dream baby…. only the odds are one in 292 million to have a winning Powerball ticket that is already $800 million (nearly $500 million cash value) and could head towards $1 billion before the drawing tonight.

Oh, I’m sure everyone’s wondering what they’d do with the money. Why not. It’s free to dream.

But I have no illusion of winning, even as I plunked down to get a couple of tickets.

If I win? I put about $10 million into trust for myself and my family. If I could make do with my current fiscal situation, I could certainly make due with that.

The rest (which would be about $480 million after tax)? Charity. There’s so many needs out there, starting with my town. Infrastructure falling apart with no money to get things fixed. Thanks Christie for not funding the transportation trust fund. Thanks NJ for having a dysfunctional school construction program. Yeah, there’s a bridge I’d pay to get replaced. I’d help the local schools upgrade facilities.

I’d help fund the NPS Great Falls National Park build out their facilities and see their plan realized.

My alma maters would get new scholarships and endowments. A couple of charities near and dear to me would see my contributions increase.

I’d give back, because at the end of the day, you can’t take it with you, but you can leave a lasting impression on those around you.

As you can see, I don’t talk about GamerGate stuff here because every single time I bring it up, without fail, it turns into a shitstorm. It’s not worth the drama to even try to discuss it, so I don’t.

Hell, for a while there just because I happen to be a GamerGate supporter I had someone on this site stalking me, going to literally ever single comment I made and downvoting it regardless of content, constantly harassing me with nasty replies, going to the main threads just to call people to downvote and harass me in sub-pages (which worked, which was the sad thing), et cetera. Other people were going to my completely unrelated social media accounts like on Reddit and stalking my comments over there, too. It was freaking creepy and I had to step away from the site because of it.

Now I might deserve this because I’m a “prick” and follow the wrong people on Twitter, who knows. I disagree, but that’s just me.

Hell, the only reason I even know what GamerGate is is because when it started someone on this site called me “Less than a Shitstain” because I’m a Gamer. Play some Minecraft on my time off? Oh, I’m such a monster! The irrational response and the blind hatred flying at me resulted in me looking into the tag and discovering something quite different than what you guys see, apparently.

But again, I try to avoid GG talk here. It just turns into an irrational shitstorm and I genuinely do not want that.

Meanwhile, in Köln, Germany:

German police have used water cannons to disperse PEGIDA demonstrators in Cologne. The anti-immigration movement were rallying against a rash of assaults on women, blamed on migrants in the city on New Year’s Eve.

Scuffles between the police and PEGIDA supporters started after the demonstrators hurled firecrackers and beer bottles at law enforcers. When they continued to throw projectiles, police deployed two water cannons and used pepper spray to disperse the group. Supporters of the anti-immigration movement were then herded towards an area near the city’s station.

Nyet  Jan 9, 2016 • 8:40:13am

Having read about gg from quite a lot of gg’rs themselves, at the start there were two (overlapping) factions: those who were pissed off about certain goings-on in the gaming journalism (whether justifiably or not is not material for this discussion - what matters is that they believed that it was about ethics) and those O’Reilly’esque “culture warriors” who were pissed about the so-called “SJWs” in gaming. E.g. I’ve seen one gg’r making sure on twitter that they’re not from the “anti-SJW” faction.
Now, it’s pretty unbelievable that the first faction is still “alive”, because whatever the issue might have been originally, it’s a dead horse by now. So the absolute majority of gamergate followers *right now* are indeed out for “SJW” scalps. Which has almost nothing to do with gaming, aside from it being only one battle in a “culture war” these folks are trying to fight.

The goal of this LDRD was to demonstrate the use of robotic vehicles for deploying and autonomously reconfiguring seismic and acoustic sensor arrays with high (centimeter) accuracy to obtain enhancement of our capability to locate and characterize remote targets. The capability to accurately place sensors and then retrieve and reconfigure them allows sensors to be placed in phased arrays in an initial monitoring configuration and then to be reconfigured in an array tuned to the specific frequencies and directions of the selected target. This report reviews the findings and accomplishments achieved during this three-year project. This project successfully demonstrated autonomous deployment and retrieval of a payload package with an accuracy of a few centimeters using differential global positioning system (GPS) signals. It developed an autonomous, multi-sensor, temporally aligned, radio-frequency communication and signal processing capability, and an array optimization algorithm, which was implemented on a digital signal processor (DSP). Additionally, the project converted the existing single-threaded, monolithic robotic vehicle control code into a multi-threaded, modular control architecture that enhances the reuse of control code in future projects.

Note: pdf file

(File describing the sensor array will not embed.)

I can’t recall a single instance of anyone catching hell just for gaming. I do recall some chatter among players of a couple in particular.

Of course you can’t because it hasn’t happened. This particular poster has a tendency to resort to verbosity & melodrama when challenged. It’s a weird sort of Gish Gallop.

GG being about ethics in gaming journalism… LOL. It’s like an Al Queda spokesman claiming AQ is about peacefully getting U.S. forces out of Saudi Arabia when eeeeeeverybody knows you for something a little different.

Early on for quite a few people it was about what they saw as unethical behavior (e.g. the “death of gamers” series of articles that looked coordinated), but how long can one be sour about something like this? So naturally the fuel for gg had to be found elsewhere, and it happened to be “SJWs”, whereas “ethics in journalism” turned into a cover.

Serious apples and oranges: while Germany has taken in nearly a million refugees, Finland has taken only a few thousand.

I’d just like to note, as a woman, that it doesn’t have to be New Year’s Eve and it doesn’t have to involve refugees from Scary Middle Eastern Places to get sexually harassed. Just being in a public place can trigger a catcall, a whistle or worse. And don’t get me started on being out after dark. There are a lot of people (including a sibling of mine) who think women get what we ask for if we go out after dark, even if it’s just to make a run down to the local Stop’n’Rob.

I agree it’s a half measure, Milo should have been banned from Twitter a long time ago. I’m a gamer and have been gaming before computers were a thing. I’m an avid FPS player and I run eight Steam servers for our gaming community. GG is a movement much like taking a dump is a movement. Ethics in gaming journalism? No it’s not. That’s a vague answer to what I see as a rhetorical question. The first step towards a solution of a problem is recognizing it, rather than trying to relativize it. That migrants often come from countries where relations between men and women are vastly different (regardless of religion, I should add) is acknowledged by most, but the next logical step is often not made: this cultural background is likely to be an influence in their new home. This doesn’t mean that all, or even most migrants are like that, but one can predict that statistically it’s going to be a problem esp. with young single males if things are left on their own. The ways of dealing with this right do exist, e.g. Norway seems to understand it:

nytimes.com

When he first arrived in Europe, Abdu Osman Kelifa, a Muslim asylum seeker from the Horn of Africa, was shocked to see women in skimpy clothes drinking alcohol and kissing in public. Back home, he said, only prostitutes do that, and in locally made movies couples “only hug but never kiss.”

Confused, Mr. Kelifa volunteered to take part in a pioneering and, in some quarters, controversial program that seeks to prevent sexual and other violence by helping male immigrants from societies that are largely segregated or in which women show neither flesh nor public affection to adapt to more open European societies.

[…]

Mr. Kelifa, the African asylum seeker, said he still had a hard time accepting that a wife could accuse her husband of sexual assault. But he added that he had learned how to read previously baffling signals from women who wear short skirts, smile or simply walk alone at night without an escort.

“Men have weaknesses and when they see someone smiling it is difficult to control,” Mr. Kelifa said, explaining that in his own country, Eritrea, “if someone wants a lady he can just take her and he will not be punished,” at least not by the police.

Norway, he said, treats women differently. “They can do any job from prime minister to truck driver and have the right to relax” in bars or on the street without being bothered, he added.

Thing is, with decentralized “movements” one can always do something bad in their name, and it’s not clear why someone doing bad stuff in the name of BLM, Occupy or anti-gamergate (there were anti-gg death threats against gg’s) should not discredit every single participant, but what someone did in the name of gg suddenly should. No, gg is not credible because of the core of what is it about now (a vehicle for wingnuts to spread their reactionary rot) rather than what someone has done somewhere.

I’ve had plenty of interactions with Gamergate people on Twitter, unfortunately, and there’s really no doubt at all that it’s a deeply reactionary right wing movement, with many members who are outright racists and white supremacists, and lots of ties to the deeply fucked up “men’s rights” movement. There may be some people calling themselves Gamergaters who don’t fit these descriptions — but not many.

The Gamergate movement is comprised of some of the worst people on the web - people like Roosh, Milo, Mike Cernovich, etc. Really despicable caveman types.

So he’s like most wingnut trolls, taking first a request and then eventually a warning to follow the rules not as a sign that he needs to calm down, but as an insult that invites only further stupidity until he gets banned…at which point he screams he’s being discriminated against for his beliefs.

I agree, right? That’s what I meant by gg being a vehicle for wingnuts to spread their reactionary views (step by step leading the followers towards further extremes - Roosh, Vox Day, then the “alt right”. etc.). Which is what is wrong with gg.

Ascribing terrorist threats of some gg’rs to all is, however, not different than ascribing various terrorist threats by anti-gamergaters to all of them.

One GG moron tried to hit me with the stupid SJW label and I ripped into him for it. I told him to stop using a stupid acronym that some kid came up with to try and insult people, especially since many people who trip across this GG nonsense and comment on it have no idea what the damned acronym means. I’ve seen it happen and it makes me laugh every single time the child using it has to explain to the person he is attempting to insult exactly what SJW means. ProTip: If your attempt to insult someone requires further explanation to your intended victim after deploying it, you have failed. Massively. If you are going to do verbal battle with someone then use your own damned words, not some childish bullshit some kids made up.

True, and as you said, this can occur with migrants regardless of religion, however how often do you see examples of non-Muslims used, be they Christian, Hindu, Yazidi, animist, or whatever? I don’t see it often—in fact, almost never. And when a non-Muslim is used as an example, how often is the religion of the attacker/victim mentioned?

Perhaps the media doesn’t do so consciously, but it gives the impression that it’s primarily a problem with Muslim migrants. There’s a bias there that annoys me.1

1. Last night I began reading a book I mentioned here recently called Muslims in the Western Imagination, so I’m probably going to be pointing out anything that strikes me as representing “Muslim monsters” with regularity as I read & learn more.

Here’s a YouTube conversation with the author about the book, if you’re interested. IIRC, I became familiar with her when that repository of scholarly articles was offering a month of free access (I think it’s UK-based, but can’t remember the name of the site—I remember you were happy to hear about the free access and said that you like the site).

Edit: It was Brill I was thinking of, but it wasn’t there that heard about her,
