Astounding 12-Year Old Jazz Pianist Joey Alexander: “Giant Steps”

Music • Views: 46,087

YouTube

Joey Alexander is from Bali, he’s 12 years old, and his facility on the piano is absolutely mind-blowing. In this video he plays one of the most difficult jazz standards ever written, John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” (named that because of the wild chord changes) and improvises with sensitivity and grace, and without a single wrong note. Just incredible.

This kid almost makes me believe in reincarnation.

Joey Alexander performs “Giant Steps” in studio, from his debut album “My Favorite Things”!

“Giant Steps” has been known to make grown men cry when they try to improvise over the changes.

Nice that he lets those full-sized guys play with him.

Here’s the original recording - check out pianist Tommy Flanagan’s solo. It’s kind of embarrassing; he struggles with the changes. And Flanagan was a really excellent pianist. To be fair, he apparently had no time to prepare for this solo - just walked into the studio and had the music put in front of him, and the recorder turned on. But his solo shows how insanely difficult this tune is.

Good gravy. That’s not merely a 12-year-old doing something extraordinary, that’s a mature performance coming from a small person. :D

I’m not a jazz fan but watching this, I think I’m starting to “get it”.

“Musician” is an old word that means “Speaks with the gods”, if you ask me.

Twelve. Years. Old. Wow.

You cannot teach the feel that kid has. The word ‘gifted’ does not begin to cover it.

Incidentally, Charles - I don’t know if you’ve listened to any of the new David Bowie album, but it’s completely thrown me for a loop. It’s about as far from a rock album as Bowie has ever gotten (only the single, ‘Lazarus,’ even approaches a rock format). This song and its arrangement made my jaw drop. So not prepared for this.

David Bowie - Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)

When I first read something about Joey Alexander, I really didn’t expect him to be this good. There’s something a little scary about a talent this huge in someone so young.

The longer the authorities let this go on, the harder it’s going to be to end it. They have to be starting to think about moving in on these armed idiots soon, and they should NOT be letting anyone bring them supplies. I’m amazed they’re letting that go on.

It’s clear they’re not going to leave on their own.

The arm of the law is long and slow.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, whose department includes the BLM, says Bundy will eventually have to answer for what he owes the federal government, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

“Cliven Bundy has had multiple court orders to remove his cattle from federal public lands and he has not paid his grazing fees and he has not abided by the law,” Jewell told the Review-Journal Wednesday on a visit to Incline Village, Nev., where she spoke at a Western Governors’ Association event.

“We will continue to pursue that,” she said.

Is there some kind of a weird parallel going on between Bundy/Oregon and Donald Trump?

In a way they both seem to be breeding in an atmosphere of everyone not doing anything about the outlandish crap they are saying and doing and just standing around and watching where it is all going to go.

Both the police and the media are acting like spectators in Oregon. The media and the GOP central party seem to stand around and watch The Donald in much the same way.

They all make statements it shouldn’t be happening and act dumb as to why factually it is and then let it happen anyway.

Some kind of a strange white privilege paralysis is affecting brains.

I think the media doesn’t want to minimize the potential for tragedy. And until said tragedy takes place, they can keep eyeballs by selling a ‘tense standoff.’

Never mind, I answered my own question—and the “media” will probably be delighted to set up shop in the office that these miscreants broke into. I don’t think it’s simply local law enforcement. After the town hall the other night, I’m pretty convinced that the entire town is at least sympathetic to these nutters. And that their demands for the Bundy crew to leave stem more from worry that there will be consequences if they’re perceived to be openly supportive than any real disagreement with their actions.
