The new album from David Bowie, Blackstar, is absolutely fantastic — moving, surreal, cacophonic and wildly inventive. One of the best albums I’ve heard in a long time.

And this track is one of the best on it. Oddly enough, though, the version on the album is not the one you hear in this video. The music video is a sort of twisted jazz big band track; the album version is more rock-oriented, with more prominent drums and guitars. Both versions are great, but I think I prefer this one because it’s truly unsettling, like a soundtrack for a very dark film noir in which the horn section keeps veering from beautiful harmonies to disquieting dissonance.

The reason he hasn’t been able to achieve this yet is the usual one - he’s been subverted by Congress at every turn. The Republican Party seems to want to keep this open sore around forever.

This version of ‘Sue’ blows my mind. Bowie’s considerable body of work continues to expand in unexpected directions.

This track reminds me a little bit of some of the stuff on T-Bone Burnett’s “Tooth of Crime” - another terrific album that was sadly overlooked.

Interesting. Last time we didn’t have a flight crew, they held us at the gate until the flight crew arrived. I thought you meant actually out on the taxiway or (worse) parked in a maintenance lot.

Easy at snowy airports - get de-iced, wait in line of slow take-offs due to conditions. Wait too long and have to go de-ice again. Rinse and repeat.

That happened to us last spring when we flew from Amsterdam to Prague. Our first flight was cancelled and then they had to find another airplane. Then when they bussed us out to the airplane OOPS WHERE’S THE FLIGHT CREW.

The flight crew and the pilots were on different flights that were re-routed to Cleveland & Minneapolis due to the conditions in Detroit. So we had to wait for them to get in from there.

Could that have been what happened to your luggage that time - they left it on the first plane?

It’s a common enough occurrence here, but I’ve never had to de-ice more than once. Minneapolis has a pretty good system in place for de-icing aircraft; I got to see them once, lined up in a row, and the de-icers would just go up and down the line spraying planes as they wheeled up, then they’d wheel off to the active runway and blast off.

A lot of people seem not to understand the logistics involved in this sort of industry. On the flight where we were waiting for our flight crew, it was similar to your circumstances, except they didn’t let us on the plane. They knew where the flight crew was, but people were still grumbling about, “Why don’t they just get another flight crew and get us in the air?” That would’ve screwed over a whole bunch of other people, that’s why.

The flight crew arrived so they opened up the aircraft but we still had to wait on board for the pilots.

Is that the Desert Eagle with the tiger striped slide? I once saw the same gun for sale at a show back up north for four consecutive years - A Desert Eagle .50, gold plated, with darker-tone gold tiger striping down the slide. Even the tackiest Saudi sheikh would pass on that. And they must have, because nobody was buying it.

Politifact revisits a formerly answered claim:

Donald Trump repeats wrong claim that prisoners swapped for Bergdahl are ‘back on the battlefield’

We looked into whether there were any new developments around the detainees, sometimes called the Taliban Five. The new information shows they’re still where they were last — in the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar under government supervision. So Trump is still wrong.

Ok, assuming Politifact is correct in this, how can any of Trump’s fellow Republican candidates not call him on such an obvious lie?

Well, the Mormon church has decided to double down on the “children of gays/lesbians can’t become members” by claiming it’s a revelation.

After same-sex marriage became legal in several countries, including the United States, the LDS Church’s top 15 leaders wrestled with what to do, weighed all the ramifications, fasted, prayed, met in the temple and sought God’s guidance on the issue.

Then Thomas S. Monson, considered a “prophet, seer and revelator” in the 15 million-member Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, declared “the mind of the Lord and the will of the Lord.”

That led to the Utah-based faith’s policy regarding same-sex Mormon couples — that they would labeled “apostates” and that their children would not be allowed baptism and other LDS religious rites until they turn age 18.

“Each of us during that sacred moment felt a spiritual confirmation,” Russell M. Nelson, head of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and next in line for the Mormon presidency, said Sunday night in a worldwide speech to the faith’s young adults. “It was our privilege as apostles to sustain what had been revealed to President Monson.”

sltrib.com

Basically, the leadership is telling the membership, “the prophet has spoken, now line up.” I’m hoping people keep in mind this policy was designed to hurt children. I’m so disgusted.

A few, at least. The same rule has been in place for years for children from polygamist relationships. One of the “Sister Wives” daughters wanted to join the Mormon Church, but because she wouldn’t absolutely cut her father, mother and the other wives out of her life, she was denied. That is exactly what it means.

And, this is going to be hell on child custody cases in Utah. I just can’t even begin to predict what kind of a disaster this is going to be.

Jerry DeLemus, 61, of Rochester, New Hampshire, arrived in Oregon last week to also help convince Bundy - son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy - and his band to give up the occupation. He is well acquainted with the Bundys, having assumed the role of commander of the private militia involved in the Nevada ranch standoff in 2014.

DeLemus said in an interview he has been to the refuge once to talk to Bundy and will continue efforts “to get him to pack his bags.”

He said he approached the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Burns as recently as Saturday to offer to be a mediator. “I think I can get this resolved,” he said, but the FBI so far hasn’t accepted his offer.

RENO, Nev. — After days of coyly raising questions about Ted Cruz’s eligibility to be president, given that he was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father, Donald Trump let his audience weigh in at a rally Sunday afternoon.

“Is he a natural-born citizen?” the Republican White House hopeful asked several thousand gathered in a Reno ballroom. Members of the crowd shouted back, “No!”

“I don’t know,” Trump said. “Honestly, we don’t know. Who the hell knows.”

Former Alaska man sued for harassing federal employees with paperwork

The government has sued a former Alaska man for filing bogus financial documents seeking nearly $1 billion against Social Security Administration employees.

Trapper Killsmany, formerly of Manley Hot Springs, filed liens at the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Recorder’s Office in February and March. The February filing claimed two state agencies and seven federal employees owed him an undetermined amount of debt, and as such he was entitled to all their assets. The most recent lien went a step further, stating he is owed $950 million.

For anybody in NYC, Kendrick Lamar’s episode of Austin City Limits starts in 5 minutes. For anybody not in NYC… it’s up on the PBS website.

Do you think we can get “Mean Gene” Okerlund out of retirement to do the commentary on the GOP debate this week?

If only.

Although I will readily deride much of American pop culture, I have a bit of admiration for both Okerlund and for Bobby Heenan. As far as American television goes I think both were delightful characters. Note how Heenan uses “limpet” in that video. He was always good at that sort of stuff. From my memory, so much of American television of the 70’s and 80’s left me unengaged, and both Okerlund and Heenan were far from the worst things on American television.

I will take this opportunity to point out that if you listen to the Trump intro video he plays at his rally, Trump includes the part where Vince McMahon is praising him on TV.

Heenan and Okerlund were indeed great. I used to love listening to Heenan on commentary alongside Gorilla Monsoon.

Pretty useless. If we give a maniac the keys to the nuclear igloos, Hitler might be remembered as an also-ran. And we will be the Good Germans.
