Watch Live: President Obama’s Last State of the Union Address

The speech doesn’t start until 9 pm Eastern, but they’re leading up to it with some interesting interviews and features. This excerpt posted on several media sites gives you an idea of what to expect.

We live in a time of extraordinary change – change that’s reshaping the way we live, the way we work, our planet and our place in the world. It’s change that promises amazing medical breakthroughs, but also economic disruptions that strain working families. It promises education for girls in the most remote villages, but also connects terrorists plotting an ocean away. It’s change that can broaden opportunity, or widen inequality. And whether we like it or not, the pace of this change will only accelerate.

America has been through big changes before – wars and depression, the influx of immigrants, workers fighting for a fair deal, and movements to expand civil rights. Each time, there have been those who told us to fear the future; who claimed we could slam the brakes on change, promising to restore past glory if we just got some group or idea that was threatening America under control. And each time, we overcame those fears. We did not, in the words of Lincoln, adhere to the “dogmas of the quiet past.” Instead we thought anew, and acted anew. We made change work for us, always extending America’s promise outward, to the next frontier, to more and more people. And because we did – because we saw opportunity where others saw only peril – we emerged stronger and better than before.

I’m with Charlie Pierce, “No Fucks To Give” Obama should take the podium, lay out how the state of the union is in far, FAR better shape than Republicans would have wanted or allowed if they had more power than they’ve already abused, and that he’s done being their punching bag. He’s going back down to 1600, he’s going back to work, and they know where to find him if they want to get their heads out of their asses and govern.

Then drop the mic on the way out.

Adding to my list of things I’m officially sick of:

Kim Davis

Didn’t think I needed to include her, because I thought her 15 minutes was up last year (about 15 actual minutes after it began.)

Tonight’s drinking game: Every time the President throws an expletive across the aisle.

Okay, so he won’t really seriously do that, but honestly, I wish he’d go completely Chevy Chase on them for a minute or two. They’ve earned it.

I predict Icky Nikki’s big rebuttal speech tonight will include:

Lauding herself for her “bold bi-partisan” action relating to the the confederate flag coming down (after saying it was no problem at all just a few short months before) and patting herself on the back for the wonderful state of South Carolina, with its anti-union, anti-ACA (anti-education, anti-women, pro-shoot-em-up, pro-idiocy) leadership.

Oh—and her excellent race relations because of how quiet the aftermath of the Charleston massacre was—which, of course, was to the credit of Joe Riley, but Nikki won’t see it that way.

Somebody will have to report back to me, because listening to her talk induced projectile vomiting for me.

One the excerpts released so far indicates that she’ll take a “softer” approach to immigration, including actually suggesting that anybody who comes here and works hard should have a chance at citizenship. Which tells me that, just like last year, she’s being fed a script from the leadership, likely aimed at trying to convince people that the party itself is not as crazy as The Donald is.

The GOP is in the position of not clapping positive virtues with the US economy, the workforce, and the American spirit.

That speaks volumes. A growing economy is something the GOP can’t applaud, because that’d expose the reality that the GOP opposes so much of what allowed that to happen.

Pawn of the Oppressor  Jan 12, 2016 • 6:47:55pm

Well let’s see, seven years…

- Osama’s bullet-riddled corpse is at the bottom of an ocean.

- I have a full-time office job instead of standing in line and waiting two weeks to be hired for a part-time job shoving boxes into the back of a truck in 104F heat with no water

- Gas is <$2 a gallon instead of ~$4.

- There’s a nuclear deal with Iran in place.

- The only people complaining about our President are, for the most part, racist fuckheads (as opposed to The Whole World) and the GOP has finally revealed itself for what it is, which is always helpful.

Granted, cost of living, bills, and personal property insurance sure as hell aren’t going down, but it would take an actual functioning legislative branch to fix that, and that’s not going to happen. Oh, and I still can’t go back to my old shooting hobby, since it’s been taken over by reactionary assholes and price gougers.

But on the whole, am I better off? Hell yes. Can some of that be attributed to Obama? I think maybe so.

What’s the GOP done for me? Absolu’ley nuthin.

re: #346 lawhawk

The President is definitely doing the law professor thing. It’s a lesson on governance and politics. The power of the executive. The bully pulpit.

Calling for the end of gerrymandering districts and letting politicians decide the drawing lines. Campaign finance reform.

Make it easier to vote, not harder.

He’s speaking to deaf ears on that one. Remember, these are the people who are with varying levels of success trying to repeal the Voting Rights Acts on almost a daily basis. Removing non-whites from the voting rolls en masse, engaging in voter intimidation, and reinstating de-facto Poll Taxes have all occurred in the past half decade.

Obama did a number on the direction the GOP wants to take the nation. All those nattering nabobs of negativity. Hate, anger, and fear are what’s driving the GOP. And hate, anger, and fear are strong motivators, but they’re not representative of the facts or the challenges that face the nation.

It was what his fans wanted, which was to lay out everything he’s accomplished, make no big promises as he knows Republicans will do everything in their power to snuff them out, and left on a high note. Neither of which originated at a State of the Union Address.

FDR’s “only thing we have to fear is fear itself” line was from his first Inaugural Address.
JFK’s first mention of a lunar goal was in May 1961 - and the “We choose to go to the moon” speech didn’t occur until in September 1962 at Rice University.

She’s good, polished. I think much of what has been said here was superficial. She was ready for prime time. A GOP first.

She reads well from a teleprompter, but she needs to work on not looking on-camera as if she’s talking to somebody hanging from the ceiling.

I know you all loved the speech, but I thought it was pretty mediocre. Basically the political equivalent of fan service. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but as speeches go it wasn’t exactly Kennedy launching the lunar program or FDR’s “Only thing we have to fear…”

Why should it be?

From Bobby Jindal not understanding why seismology might be important, to Bob McDonnell’s corruption, to thirsty Marco Rubio, to Jodi Ernst and her bread bag shoes, to what we just saw..it has become a real “walk the plank” kind of experience.

Yeah, the condescending bit about there being no riots in SC sort of falls flat when you consider that there was little to no argument over Roof’s guilt and he was pretty quickly hauled in and put behind bars. If he’d been a cop, you can bet that Nikki would be singing a much different tune.

509
Bass Reeves  Jan 12, 2016 • 7:40:14pm

I think she was pulling a relatively early-term Thatcher in terms of forcing a square jawline to look more masculine while also speaking slower and deeper. It’s supposed to make her seem more competent.

She doesn’t do it that well, mostly because she overdid it. But also because most of the stuff she said is stupid.

Nikki had virtually no part in the events that played out after the Charleston shooting, and even had the ignoble honor of having said she didn’t think the Confederate flag was a concern in the state months before the shooting. That she’s now trying to grab a bit of the glory is pretty pathetic.

Outside of Reagan, who on the Republican side in the past half-century has had true oratory skill? Pretty much anyone can do the Trump bombastic speech - I’m talking about having the ability to inspire those being spoken to.

Reagan was outside the norm on that. It’s the same reason GOP comedy never works…it always goes after the weak and marginalized and ends up being sadistic. GOP speeches try to sell a bill of goods…but it always sounds like a sales pitch to the rubes. The rubes have caught on.

re: #399 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I’ll skip the talking head analysis and Republican response.

That was one hell of a speech. Hopeful. Uplifting. Doing his best to remind people on both sides that the other side is human.

(Added bonus of getting to watch people on both sides completely miss that point.)

Watched on Youtube, audio was just fine for me.

I switched over to “Chopped.” Much better for my health. Now I’ll go back upthread to see what idiocy Nikki spewed.

BTW—before I do—all the tongue-bathing on MSNBC about what a great VP she’d make—I’d like to know for whom? Nobody on the GOP side really needs any help carrying South Carolina. Trump wouldn’t pick her—not “pretty enough” and he’s already about a zillion points ahead here. Rubio and Cruz? They don’t need another minority on their ticket—and again, don’t need Nikki to carry SC. The only two I can see having any interest in her at all would be Kasich or Christie, and they don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting the nomination.

Plus, Nikki is not very bright and has a lot of dirty laundry that has not been fully aired.

I just don’t see it—but I have been known to be wrong once (or maybe twice) before.

Stop the presses — man’s hair gets greyer as he enters middle age!

My hair went from red to white, as I prefer to call it, in just a few years in my late forties, and the most stressful experience I had during that time was working in corporate America.

Do I know my gov or what?re: #24 BeachDem

Reagan also had good sceenplay writers… no, seriously. Look back and tell me how many of the ones people remember as good weren’t straight out of a Frank Capra movie? When not, he was doing stuff like the Alzheimer’s inspired “bombers” comment.
