Tuesday Night Jam: Mariachi Flor De Toloache: Tiny Desk Concert

The real mariachi deal

To follow President Obama’s State of the Union speech, here’s an amazing performance by Mariachi Flor de Toloache, live in the NPR’s Tiny Desk studio, tearin’ it up.

January 8, 2016 by FELIX CONTRERAS

Mariachi Flor de Toloache’s 2014 self-titled debut album earned a Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Ranchera category — quite an accomplishment, given that the category celebrates an incredibly long tradition of Mexican music. But it was no fluke: The group’s members come by their mariachi skills honestly and with endless practice, while still looking for ways to take chances.

Still, the best way to introduce yourself to Mariachi Flor de Toloache is to see it live — something many have done as the band tours with The Arcs, both as members and as an opening act. It’s got top-notch musicianship, mariachi swagger for days, and a performance style that captures all the power and emotion you’d hope for.

Mariachi Flor de Toloache is available now.

What it tells me is that Republicans want to believe in a contradiction: That the President doesn’t say enough nice things about America, but when he does they’re ridiculous.

All the good Obama did in the last 7 years and all you hear from the GOP is how awful everything is.

I can’t imagine how much he could have accomplished if the GOP had tried even a little to actually accomplish absolutely anything.

I never understood this. Comparing America and China is like comparing apples and oranges. American and Chinese power and influence is exerted in different ways. The Chinese do not, contrary to popular opinion, “have us by the balls”. I’d like to see a prominent Republican answer that question honestly.

Well, I see Bernie Sanders at 40% in a Democratic primary, a party in which he has never spent a single day, and I realize that it’s likely to be a while until sanity is back to American politics; it’s just that both sides are insane right now in different ways.

The Democratic party wasted the chance, if the people who showed up in 08 & 12 to elect him had also showed up 10 & 14 the dems would still have congress and would have been in control of redistricting after the 2010 census!

Nikki Haley speaks, media goes “oooh awesome future VP,” base hates it.

I’ll ask again the question I asked in the previous thread. Would seriously like to hear any thoughts anyone has:

All the tongue-bathing on MSNBC about what a great VP she’d make—I’d like to know for whom? Nobody on the GOP side really needs any help carrying South Carolina. Trump wouldn’t pick her—not “pretty enough” and he’s already about a zillion points ahead here. Rubio and Cruz? They don’t need another minority on their ticket—and again, don’t need Nikki to carry SC. The only two I can see having any interest in her at all would be Kasich or Christie, and they don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting the nomination.

Plus, Nikki is not very bright and has a lot of dirty laundry that has not been fully aired.

Why do they think she’d be such a great VP pick? I don’t get it…

In a sane world, it would be the same reason Obama picked Biden - he didn’t need any help carrying Delaware (or any part of the Northeast). But he needed someone with a career’s worth of Washington experience. Haley would provide executive (government) experience for whomever wins the GOP nomination.

In the world we have, Haley wears a skirt and as we saw with Palin, the GOP thinks that’s all you need to get women to vote for you. Also, she’s not lily ass butt white, so that will help with minorities in their warped minds.

The truth is a VP pick rarely affects a national election. It’s one of those things that if you do it wrong, it could cost you the election, but otherwise it doesn’t really matter for most voters.

Why do they think she’d be such a great VP pick? I don’t get it…

The people who, prior to this speech, thought she’d be a great pick for Trump forgot that a month ago she called his immigration freeze un-American and unconstitutional.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley did not mince words on Tuesday when she called Donald Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States “absolutely un-American” and “unconstitutional.”

It defies everything that this country was based on and it’s just wrong,” the Republican said, speaking to reporters in Columbia and adding later that the policy was “an embarrassment” to her party. A clip of her remarks were posted to Twitter by her communications director.

Any candidate other than Trump might be able to bridge a certain level of policy disagreement with their running mate. However there’s no way someone as misogynistic as him picks a woman who’s stood up to him in such unequivocal terms on an issue so central to their campaign.

One other thing, the way it typically works is if a presidential nominee has Washington experience, they pick a governor; and if they are a governor, they pick someone with Washington experience. With one exception: when the nominee has little experience they tend to pick someone with lots of experience (JFK and LBJ, Obama and Biden).

It’s a trend that mostly holds:
Romney picked Ryan; McCain picked Palin; Clinton picked Gore; GWB picked Cheney; Reagan picked GHWBush; Carter picked Mondale.

About the only exceptions I can think of were GHWBush taking Quayle and Gore picking Lieberman.

More than a dozen local residents have reported to authorities that they were harassed in the weeks leading up to the occupation and in the days since. Different trucks, SUVs and other vehicles — most with out-of-state licenses — have followed the residents.

Four of the people who filed reports agreed to share their accounts with The Oregonian/OregonLive only if their names and identifying information were withheld because they feared further harassment. Law enforcement sources confirmed each had reported the episodes.

So, two things here:

1.) Republican governor and champion of small govt. admits he needs the poster child of big government federal agencies to bail him out after he poisoned an entire fucking city through ideologically based, depraved criminal negligence.

2.) Snyder’s twitter handle is actually @onetoughnerd wtf?

Also good points. As I said, it’s hard for me to be objective about Haley, as I truly loathe her. Before becoming governor, her resume was so thin as to be nearly transparent, and until the boost she got when Palin (just another reason to hate and despise Palin) came out for her, she wasn’t even a serious contender for governor. She has really only gotten this far by cronyism (at one time, she was Mark Sanford’s go-to gal) and bullshit.

I worked for/supported her Dem opponent both times—of course, it’s a straight vertical uphill battle for Dems here in South by dog Carolina. But, it let me know just about everything there is to know about Nikki. Most of it, not very pretty. It’s just amazing to me when she’s touted as such a strong contender for the national stage.

Say what you will about dKos - and I hung out there for a long time before migrating over here - it’s always been THE place to turn when it comes to a wonkish devotion to the state and local races that too often go neglected. If Democrats have any hope of regaining Congress in 2020 and beyond, they need to take a lesson from the GOP and start contesting those small races harder, both to build up benches of good candidates and of course to get some control of the next House redistricting.

re: #86 freetoken

Trump is pretty emphatic that he is only running to win. Since almost everyone agrees that a 3rd party candidate ain’t goin’ to be POTUS, even Trump won’t take that one on.

In order for a third party candidate to win, there has to be several things going on. You need (in addition to a national campaign):

1. disillusionment with both major parties
2. name recognition (or money to quickly create name recognition, without the benefit of a primary system like the major parties have in Iowa and New Hampshire)
3. ballot access in all 50 states (whether this is through a third party or as an independent or some combination)
4. an electoral college path that avoids the election being thrown to the House

Basically, you need the perfect storm. Perot came close in 1992, before going crazy/exposing himself as crazy. Of the four conditions above, Trump has #2. He’s screwed on #1, as Democratic voters, while not overly enthusiastic about Clinton, are not willing to leave the party for Trump. I’m not sure if he can get on the ballot in all 50 states without some trickeration because of sore loser laws. And I don’t see GOP House members going with him over the official GOP nominee if it were to be thrown to the House.

Now, it’s possible that Trump would be dumb enough to think he can win anyway. But it’s more likely that GOP voters would eventually fall in line with the nominee than abandon the party for Trump (who at that point will be painted as a sore loser, his greatest fear, I think), and his total would top off somewhere around 5%.

It has been hilarious to watch the birther meltdown on the right. As much as they have played the game over the years it’s really something to see them turn it against themselves. It proves that even if Republicans could clear the country of every impure soul and attain their perfect union with perfect people, all they would do is turn inward and consume themselves.

Thanks to Trump they don’t have to wait for their nirvana, its here…lol!

A bit of agribusiness news:

Iowa, Nebraska post record corn and soybean crops

It is a record year for Iowa and Nebraska crop farmers.

The final harvest report released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture says Iowa farmers brought in 2.5 billion bushels of corn, 4 percent higher than the 2009 record. Iowa has led the nation in corn production for 22 consecutive years. The average per-acre yield of 192 bushels also is a new record.

Soybean farmers did very well too producing a record crop and the nation’s largest soybean bounty, beating out Illinois for the first time since 2012. At 554 million bushels, this year’s Iowa soybean harvest exceeds the 2005 record by 5 percent. The per-acre yield also beat the 2005 record.

[…]

If my calculations are correct, the 2015 corn production in Iowa alone, if eaten directly by humans, would provide every American over 2000 calories per day for the entire year.

Think of that for a moment.

That’s just corn.

Now in reality only a tiny fraction of the corn is intended for direct-to-human use. A great portion now goes to ethanol production and livestock feed, and the portion for humans is mostly through processed products (corn syrup, corn oil, etc.) There are industrial uses too.

Still, I remember when LVQ would rant about how the US was vulnerable to climate change - and we are - and he would fret about food. I kept telling him that we don’t have to worry about food. Even with climate change. At least for this century.

The US is capable of producing vastly more food than even we could consume in a gluttonous orgy of daily feasts.

FWIW: a bushel of corn is .0254 metric tons, i.e., 25.4 kilograms. Dry corn provides around 386 food calories (i.e., kilo-calories in chemistry) per 100 grams. So a bushel of “indian corn” provides a bit over 98 thousand food calories.

David Brooks:

But Cruz manufactures an atmosphere of menace in which there is no room for compassion, for moderation, for anything but dismantling and counterattack. And that is what he offers. Cruz’s programmatic agenda, to the extent that it exists in his speeches, is to destroy things: destroy the I.R.S., crush the “jackals” of the E.P.A., end funding for Planned Parenthood, reverse Obama’s executive orders, make the desert glow in Syria, destroy the Iran nuclear accord.

Some of these positions I agree with, but the lack of any positive emphasis, any hint of reform conservatism, any aid for the working class, or even any humane gesture toward cooperation is striking.

Which ones ?

Iran’s Fars News Agency is reporting that Iran has freed the U.S. crew members from two Naval vessels that had strayed into Iranian waters, prompting their seizure and detention by Iranian coastal forces.

Fars quoted a statement by the “Islamic Revolution Guard Corps” saying Iran “has released the U.S. marines and their vessels in international waters’ after its investigations showed that they had gone astray during their voyage in the Persian Gulf. In its statement, the IRGC pointed out that its investigations show that the U.S. combat vessels illegal entry into Iranian water was not the result of a purposeful act,” Fars said.

There was no immediate comment or verification from U.S. officials. But they had said earlier Tuesday that they expected a release Wednesday morning.

A bit of agribusiness news:

Iowa, Nebraska post record corn and soybean crops

If my calculations are correct, the 2015 corn production in Iowa alone, if eaten directly by humans, would provide every American over 2000 calories per day for the entire year.

According to my math, it’s 20 million calories!!!

Gotta be more than just 2.

Sugar cane is a grass native to Asia and grows mostly in tropical and subtropical areas. In terms of the U.S. sugar cane production by state, it is mainly concentrated in the federal states of Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Hawaii. In 2014, Florida produced around 15.05 million tons of sugar cane and was expected to yield more than 15.2 million tons the following year. During this period, Florida accounted for almost half of the country’s total sugar cane production. Some nine hundred thousand acres of sugar cane are harvested yearly in the United States, generating over one billion U.S. dollars in annual revenues. In 2013, revenues from sugar cane harvesting reached two billion U.S. dollars.

But a lot of the farm land is owned by just a couple of families. Example:

Various business holdings and ventures

The Fanjuls began vertically integrating their sugar holdings in 1991 with the creation of the company’s own sugar marketing arm. Previously, their Florida sugar was marketed by Savannah Foods & Industries of Georgia.[10]

In a turn of diversification, in 1994, Flo-Sun broke ground on a joint venture with U.S Generating Co. to construct a cogeneration power plant adjacent to the company’s Okeelanta sugar mill in western Palm Beach County. At a cost of $200 million, the power plant would produce energy from sugar cane stalks and woody waste that would be delivered via Florida Power and Light to an estimated 46,000 homes.[11] After the partnership dissolved, Flo-Sun began operating the biomass power plant on its own in 1996 and expanded it to the largest in the nation by 2006 [12]

In 2010, the Fanjul family celebrated the 50th anniversary of their American sugar companies, which at the time included 187,000 acres of farming in Palm Beach County, Florida with 2,000 jobs and more than 650,000 tons of sugar.[13] Worldwide the Fanjul companies at the time included four raw sugar mills and 10 refineries in six countries, making them the world’s largest refiner of cane sugar, producing 6 million tons of sugar annually.[14]

In 2011, Fanjul Corp. was ranked the third largest private company in Florida. CEO Alfonso Fanjul granted a $1 million charitable contribution to the University of Miami to build a research center for the top eye hospital in the nation.[15]

The Fanjul brothers were large shareholders and directors of Southeast Bank before its takeover and liquidation by the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in 1991. In addition, they are the majority shareholders and directors of FAIC Securities, which was investigated by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission for regulatory violations.[16]

She has a vagina and brown skin, which is supposed to help hide the GOP’s misogyny and racism.

New poll from Iowa out, and it’s from the DSM Register, the paper Trump likes to hate.

Because it shows Cruz in the lead:

desmoinesregister.com

Note however that Cruz’s lead is noticeably less than the last iteration of that poll. The other pollsters are showing Trump edging ahead of Cruz in Iowa popularity, and this DSMR poll does show changes in Trump’s direction.

Sure, this is all just popularity polling… but soon the real thing will be here, and if as conjectured by endless pundits is true - that Trump’s bubble will burst - then that better come soon.

re: #90 BeachDem

But then, the GOP picked Palin for VP, so the bar is very, very low.

I don’t. The state and city would have been saddled with debt from building a stadium and related infrastructure for a billionaire owner that they can ill afford. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the existing stadium except that the owner thinks that they can make more money with a new stadium.

Some other municipality will now be paying for the privilege of hosting a billionaire sports owner’s team.

Some Navy families can breathe easier this morning, calm heads prevailed all around.

DUBAI, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Iran released ten U.S. sailors on Wednesday after holding them overnight, bringing a swift end to an incident that had rattled nerves days ahead of the expected implementation of a landmark nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had freed the sailors after determining they had entered Iranian territorial waters by mistake. The sailors had been detained aboard two U.S. Navy patrol boats in the Gulf on Tuesday.
“Our technical investigations showed the two U.S. Navy boats entered Iranian territorial waters inadvertently,” the IRGC said in a statement carried by state television. “They were released in international waters after they apologized,” it added.
Confirming the sailors’ safe release, the Pentagon said there were no indications they were harmed while in Iranian custody.

193
lawhawk  Jan 13, 2016 • 6:06:31am

Meanwhile, the Iranians released the US sailors and their boats at first light - exactly as they said that they would. The right wingers goes apoplectic anyways. They’re busy questioning whether there were actually mechanical problems with the boats, or that there’s more at work here than basic law of the seas and common courtesy stuff - that the Iranians were within their rights to detail the USN boat and sailors until they sorted out that they were having mechanical problems and that they’d let them go on their way.

The US and Iranian authorities are both on the same page, so the right wing automatically goes into conspiracy mode. It’s worse than clockwork.

The GOP is currently constituted to be the party of anger and hate (which leads to suffering). They need bad stuff to happen to the nation to somehow prove that their worldview is the one that’s an accurate reflection. Problem is that every one of their predictions for doom and gloom have not come to pass. They warned of sky high oil prices - they’re cratering. They warned of high unemployment that was intractably stuck above 8%. It’s now at 5%. They warned of continuing recession and poor economic growth. They’re wrong as the economy continues to grow. Job growth? Yeah that too.

They warned that opening relations with Cuba would be bad too. They’re looking wrong on that as well.

Everywhere you look, the GOP has been wrong, and are pushing the nation down the wrong path. Same with Obamacare. They warned it would destroy the jobs market and insurance industry. Wrong again. They warned it would increase the number of uninsured. It hasn’t.

But the GOP remains fixated on repealing Obamacare to the exclusion of all else.

On and on it goes, and no one in the GOP is going to stop it.

I saw the pilot but have not sat down to watch the rest. Hope they do not spoil one of my favorite PK Dick novels.

Typical negative reviews of the series complain about not really following the book. For my viewing pleasure, I don’t really care if a screen production is faithful to a printed story.

spoiler 1 - plot critique (doesn’t really give away much.)

I find the plot slow but complex enough to have some substance. By plot here I mean the overall progress of the story. There is considerable weakness in the personal plotlines of the characters, especially the lead characters, as I don’t think they portray rational humans well enough. I.e., the characters make choices that I believe real humans would not do. The main heroine in particular, in how she deals with the men in her life.

spoiler 2 - final scenes - real spoilers

I wonder if in season 2 the resistance will realize they have been duped by Hitler and have been collecting films for him all along.

Also, I wonder if Frank’s naive buddy will in fact end up dead. That was sort of left hanging out there.

That the head of the Japanese Imperial police unit would interrupt his Seppuku ceremony I find somewhat questionable. It goes against a great deal of how they built his character.

That trade minister Tegami ends up in our timeline in his vision is interesting but I don’t see how the plot can really make use of that, unless a time machine is introduced.

I doubt he’s going to file a suit. His present legal battles are not going too well for him. A judge reading his BS and Twitter’s TOS & rules would just toss the suit out. It’s a contract with a private company, and he broke his side of the contract more than once. Too bad, so sad.

re: #215 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

not worried about maintaining the plot line, but whether they uphold the spirit of the thing.

This is a very minor spoiler and I don’t think I need to hide this:

Well, I’m not sure if this seires is in the “spirit” of the original book or not, but one thing I did notice in all the episodes is how both the Imperial officials in the west, and the American Reich citizens in the east, very clearly wear lapel pins to publicly declare their patriotism to their in-group.

It’s very conscious costuming and scenes are shot to clearly emphasize regalia.

It reminded me of these “debates” of ours where the candidates are all sure they have their shiny little flag lapel pins all polished and presented clearly on the lapels of their very dark suits.

Now I guess I’m one of those who are very tired of our fiction always going back to WWII and Nazi-this and Nazi-that. It’s beyond tropish. But I guess if one is going to to an alt-history of the 20th century it’s likely WWII is going to loom large in the story.

One of my take-aways from the 10 episodes is that Americans make better Nazis than they make Japanese citizens.

The show does lean quite a bit on stereotypes.

minor spoiler:

I think there is the underlying Japanese-are-sneaky theme going on in the entire story. It’s an old meme. I’m not even sure most Japanese find it offensive. But it is a stereotype.

re: #227 freetoken

The show does lean quite a bit on stereotypes.

The conflict that comes out in the book is that there is a faction in post-Hitler Germany that wants to turn on their erstwhile Japanese Allies and use the atomic bomb on them, forcing Japanese to take sides in the struggle by supporting the SS, who favor a continued alliance with Japan.

‘Morning, Lizards,

This morning’s jumbled thoughts…

My wife Skyped me a little while ago and told me her place of employment is on lockdown. A bank in the area was robbed, and the robber has eluded police to this point. She doesn’t seem too concerned about it because they’re in a pretty secure building. Kinda bugging me, though.

Didn’t watch the SOTU last night, opting to watch the Knicks pull out a short-handed win against Boston (Carmelo was running down the floor and a ref didn’t get out of the way, so sprained ankle). The Knicks playing winning ball is something I haven’t seen much in this century, so I’m watching when I can - I watched the game live, then a 60-minute condensed version and a full replay while tracking guitars in my studio, finally getting to bed at 2:00 AM. The game was that good, playoff atmosphere.

And finally - we’ve got tickets to see the one and only Tommy Emmanuel at Town Hall in NYC in February! So excited about that.

nines09  Jan 13, 2016 • 8:08:31am

Just wanted to say this to someone. I picked you.
Heard a bit of the SOTU last night as I came back from eastern Pa on the PATP in squalls and high winds. Once again I heard a very articulate argument on how as Americans we are all in this together. I heard a man ask for understanding and empathy and a plea for all of us to look inward and be the best we can be as a people and a nation. I heard a man stand before the body of our government and our nation and say that we are a good and decent people. I heard no rancor or hate. I heard no fear and loathing. I heard a leader speak of the bright future and the ability of America to be what she has always been. A beacon of light in a sometimes dark world. I guess I’ll now spend the next few days watching those very people who he attempted to reach on the other side of that aisle crawl back under the rock and feed the baser darkness that has enabled a grifter like Trump to use their machine to advance bigotry and ignorance and ugly. He could have stood there and summed up the last 7 years by asking for one of his illustrious colleagues from across that aisle to point out one thing that Grand Old Party has done in those last 7 years to advance the welfare and prosperity of the American people. Just one. No one is perfect. No political party is perfect. As I say under my gif, “We are all damaged in our own exquisite way.” But one party has some serious soul searching to do. Very serious.
Back to the tasks at hand.

247
HappyWarrior  Jan 13, 2016 • 8:12:37am

I missed the SOTU as I said since I was at class. It did get me thinking since I had taken a classes there 8 years ago when Obama was still a candidate that one of my favorite professors had a large Obama sign outside her office. I asked my professor that I had last night if she was still teaching on the campus and he said yes and told me he’d say hello for me. I was going to visit her office during our midway break(class is 2 1/2 hours) last night but realized that there was no way she was in her office. I was looking at footage Obama as the SOTU drew to an end and it’s sad that this is his last year. He’s done a lot of good but I hope he enjoys a much deserved retirement and I know he will be a good ex president.

Most of what they call “a Hulu original”really isn’t… like they picked up The Mindy Project after Fox cancelled it. Or they buy shows from overseas.

But they’ve done some cute documentary series that I’ve enjoyed; “Behind the Mask” follows the real lives of sportsball mascots (pro, semi-pro, college and high school) when out of costume. Or “Rocketjump” about a company that makes short films; each episode is 10 minutes of behind-the-scenes, then they premiere the clip.

I mean Christie needs to ask himself how we would have responded if the same thing happened. I naturally feel for the families of those involved but it’s part of the risk that does happen when you’re in another country’s waters on an armed ship. Christie is showing that arrogance that makes a lot of foreigners hate our government and it’s one that disgusted me in the Bush years and I hope we won’t return to after Obama.

So, wasn’t Nikki Haley’s response to Obama last night sold as the GOP’s way to get back at Trump??? It appears to have failed in that regard. All the crazy wingnuts are dumping on her.

And of course Mr. Ugly Grunt TRUMP® was critical. From this NPR online article…

NPR - Trump And Supporters Hit Back At Nikki Haley’s Jabs

Trump responded to Haley’s comments Wednesday, calling in to Fox & Friends. “She’s weak on illegal immigration, and she certainly has no trouble asking me for campaign contributions,” Trump said.

“I feel very strongly about illegal immigration. She doesn’t, and I think the people in her great state, I love her state, I’m there a lot, and by the way I have a massive lead in South Carolina. We have a massive lead. They’re incredible people, and they feel like I do. Believe me. Because they don’t like what’s happening in our country,” he continued.

And a tweet from Laura Ingrham…

Laura Ingraham ✔ @IngrahamAngle

The country is lit up w/ a populist fever & the GOP responds by digging in, criticizing the GOP candidates dominating polls?! NOT SMART.

I can’t stay, but I just had to come drop this off. I don’t remember how I found it, but this prepper guy is apparently ex-military and he gives a rundown of what he can tell about the Oregon situation from looking at photos from news reports. He’s clearly not impressed, but there’s one part where he’s reading through the list of the supplies they want and when he gets to French Vanilla Creamer (around 2:00) the WTF look on his face is absolutely priceless. I nearly fell out of my chair LOL:

Heh. Reminds me of a little mishap our (former) lead guitarist had in our basement music studio. We were jamming and he stopped quick and ran out the door to grab a towel from my laundry room. I looked down and noticed he had kicked over his cup of coffee he had brought with him. I went to help him and I saw this light brown puddle of what looked to me like baby upchuck. I said to him I thought you said it was coffee. He had so much creamy French whatever in it it had no look or consistency of coffee. WTF?

My guess is the establishment still thinks that there’s enough “reasonable”/”Main Street”/non-Tea Party Republicans left in the primary electorate that they’ll eventually be able to turn back Trump and/or Cruz. In part because that’s the way it’s always gone down for them. Reagan was the crank in ‘76 and Ford got the nomination; Buchanan in ‘92 and ‘96 was the same thing; Huckabee in 2008, Santorum in 2012. There’s always the crazy uncle at Thanksgiving who yells inappropriately at guests (usually not realizing that said guest is gay or has a biracial child or wasn’t born in the US or whatever), but eventually the electorate settles down and goes with the respectable choice.

I’m just not sure there’s enough of those reasonable Republicans left. The older ones have died off and many of us younger ones have left the party.

I believe it’s called a Vihuela. They can have up to 12 strings (in courses, or pairs, like a regular 12 sting guitar), but they are popular in the five-string configuration.

The Guitarron is also made in a 5-string configuration, but I notice that the woman playing the one in the video has a six-string model.

Also - they are good. The vocals were surprisingly contemporary for the style they’re working in, and the melding of the two works a lot better than I’d have imagined.

All I can say is that the Tea Party is alive and well in South Carolina. Their annual orgasmafest in Myrtle Beach is this weekend, and I believe it is sold out. Unfortunately, their presence on MLK weekend means that several of them will show their ugly mugs at the MLK breakfast next Monday (last time around it was Perry and Newt), pretty much ruining the event from my perspective.

re: #352 makeitstop

I believe it’s called a Vihuela. They can have up to 12 strings (in courses, or pairs, like a regular 12 sting guitar), but they are popular in the five-string configuration.

The Guitarron is also made in a 5-string configuration, but I notice that the woman playing the one in the video has a six-string model.

Also - they are good. The vocals were surprisingly contemporary for the style they’re working in, and the melding of the two works a lot better than I’d have imagined.

You are correct. I just found that out in a google search under “5 string guitar mariachi” for the search term.

I remember having dinner in Orlando Florida many years ago at a real Mexican restaurant and they had a full Mariachi band with I believe 8 guys in it. I was amazed at how they could play so dynamically at such a low volume that did not disturb the diners.

And yet almost everyone is playing. We all have a dream of quitting the 9-5 rat race and being our own bosses. Being one’s own boss is much tougher than most 9-5 jobs. That is why when my co-workers ask me what would you do if you win; I respond the first thing I will do is make a print out of said numbers attach it to “winning” ticket and then call my accountant and attorney. My co-workers do not get it.

I am an anomoly, I guess. I love my job and wouldn’t want to quit. I would be happy to reduce hours (I tend to do 60-75 on a regular basis…some days, like today, are light, which I relish!), but I have been having trouble:

1) wrapping my head around this much money. If you did the 20 year payout, that is $75,000,000 per year. That alone I can barely comprehend.

2) what on earth would I spend that much money on (a new house, new car, possibly a mini-winnegago van, and, I’m done).

That said, I would definitely create my own PAC and go the MoveOn route, so for that alone, winning would be great.

We went to one of our favorite Mex joints for dinner over the weekend, and they used to have Mariachi every weekend. But as the place got more popular, they added more tables and now there’s not enough room to squeeze in a small Mariachi band.

They had a woman singing Spanish songs to tracks. She was good, but it wasn’t the same. Pity, I enjoyed watching a good Mariachi band.

Yep.

And you’d think by now the Tea Party types would have figured out candidates like Haley were just there to be used by the GOP. Once elected into the party the party tried to mainstream, or establish them as real Republicans. It is why it has been a rocky relationship. This election might bring the big breakup.

Even TRUMP is using them, it is just not clear as to what end. If he is the nominee, will he too be just another Republican and the people he conned into thinking he was for them get screwed? If Trump thinks he can be this crazy and then do a complete turn to be seen as electable in the presidential elections there is going to be hell to pay.

I wonder if Trump realizes he is playing with unstable characters and if they do not get what they want, they may well take it all out on him.

Later…

There’s no evidence that anything would have been different with or without the deal.

This was an instance where a sovereign nation addressed an armed ship/boat entering their territorial waters and investigating and determining that there were mechanical issues - not anything else.

If you immediately put 80% of your winnings into a tax-free foundation, you don’t have to pay income tax on that $. Then you spend your days looking for worthy causes and writing checks. If you give away $20M a year, that would take your whole life.

And the 20% you kept… that’s for the really nice house you live in meantime, and as many really fun vacations as you want. (pro-tip… chartering a jet means you’re not subject to airline schedules, TSA checkin, etc. Makes the trips a whole lot more fun).

The way they treat their own is why one should have little faith in their ability to govern us all. Haley’s not a RINO, she’s not a moderate, she’s every bit part of why the GOP is a toxic vat of shit in the Obama years but because she criticized King Donald, she’s suddenly a RINO and not a real conservative. She only came around to taking the flag down when it was politically expedient for her to do so. Her immediate response after the Charleston massacre:

But Haley said her job right now is to heal, not to have policy conversations.

“To start having policy conversations with the people of South Carolina, I understand that’s what y’all want. My job is to heal the people of this state,” Haley said…

Haley has argued that the flag over the state’s Capitol is a “sensitive issue,” but has said it’s not worth removing the flag. Haley also argued that South Carolina’s image problem with race was “fixed” when the state elected her, the first Indian-American female governor, and appointed Republican Tim Scott, an African American, to replace Jim DeMint in the U.S. Senate.

Main thing is without the deal is that it would have been more likely that this escalated into dick waving and chestbeating? Especially if our policy towards Iran at the time involved that. As it is relations are still sour enough that Iran will use this as a small propaganda boost at home; I don’t care because really harmless to us. And I don’t know why running around freaking out about things is considered manly and tough by a certain set.
Obviously no way to establish that minus the deal that this would have been worse but I do think it’s reasonable to posit that the odds of it being more confrontational somewhere would have been higher. As it is the body language of the Sailors (Marines I haven’t followed closely enough to be sure) doesn’t even seem that worried. Wary yes, following commands cause they were smart enough not to escalate yes, but not the posture of people that think they are really screwed.

Sometimes comments are the best.

FreedomOfSpeechInOregon

The media, (i.e. Olive), is playing this to scare the really, really stupid people of Portlandia (redundant). Why isn’t President Obozo proposing restrictions and standards on the MM (Mindless Media)? Clearly the MM is trying to get people killed so they can profit from it. Clearly the MM is frightening Portlandia for profit.

What is sad is that Portlandia can’t see when they are being played.

@ FreedomOfSpeechInOregon it is a redflag operation by the sex toy industry to sell more bags of dks. Really what is your address, I’ll send you some.

Oh, I’m paying for it, believe me. I found myself having to stop and walk around a bit, the concentrated frustration, hatred and rage was so intense.

This page?

Yep, that’s the one. Sorry I didn’t include the link earlier. It really is stunning, to see the fracture lines in the GOP start to come out into the open. The establishment is bailing, backing & filling as frantically as they can, and The Base, poisoned by decades of Hate Radio and Fox News, has got the bit between its teeth.

I saw this one on an earlier thread, and wondered aloud if his profile pic on the Google+ page was him doing Sarah Palin in drag. You know, as a sort of tribute. And also similar to the way some young RWNJ’s like Steve Crowder seem to like dragging up even though they’re homophobic knob-ends.

I was wrong though- that’s the way Mr Fry actually looks, apparently.

You’re welcome.

Now I need a shower. And some cute kitty videos.

Eggsellent post. And, thank you for doing the truly grimy disgusting work that you did.

re: #403 Charles Johnson

Welp, this morning I’m being lectured on Twitter that using the word “moron” to describe people like the followers of Milo Yiannopoulos is “ableist,” and they’re not going to recommend my article on his blue checkmark tantrum until I take a “pledge” to refrain from using words like that ever again because it hurts them so much.

I just can’t even.

What’s their position on “bag of dicks”?
