Tonight my son had an indoor soccer tournament. The first three rounds were 25 minutes long, but the first game was at 6 and if they won the second game was at 8—a long wait. The coach thought they would win the first two games and apologized to the parents for taking them away from the all-holy Patriots. They lost in the first round and a few parents were heard to say, “well, too bad; let’s get home and catch the second half!”

If we’re going to make stupid, empty claims about Trump’s accomplishments, why not go straight to Juche-style insanity?

Donald Trump was preceded out of his mother’s birth canal by a double rainbow and a unicorn. That rainbow then turned into the polio vaccine; the unicorn pooped IBM stock, and was a fairly accomplished electrical engineer.

Finicum said he is licensed and has a care contract with Catholic Charities Community Services in Arizona. While his license has not been revoked, Finicum said he would no longer receive referrals to care for foster children.

That represents an enormous loss of income for the Finicums. According to a 2010 tax filing, Catholic Charities paid the family $115,343 to foster children in 2009. That year, foster parents were compensated between $22.31 and $37.49 per child, per day, meaning if the Finicums were paid at the maximum rate, they cared for, on average, eight children per day in 2009.

“That was my main source of income,” Finicum said. “My ranch, well, the cows just cover the costs of the ranch. If this means rice and beans for the next few years, so be it. We’re going to stay the course.”

I wouldn’t mind one parent in every family in America getting paid to be a full time parent. Where the hypocrisy lies is in him bitching about the government and taking government money. Catholic charities is getting money from the government and passing it on to him.

It’s pretty clear that if you sat him down and explained the contradictions he still wouldn’t understand. I’m not sure that means they should lose the children, but the basic fact that he’s left home to participate in an illegal insurrection closes the deal. What makes me sad is that he and his wife may very well have been providing and good a loving home.

Speaking of earworms, if you haven’t seen Inside Out, you are missing one of the top Pixar films. It’s what I would expect the first 15 minutes of Up to be had it been made into a full movie.

I watched that with a friend and we both thought it was cute and might have loved it if we were like maybe 10 years old. Okay, she thought it was cute. I was more like “how much longer do I have to endure this?” Up was way more fun I thought.

Florida gives single people with no income $189.00 month. Families with dependants get more, plus cash assistance. To only qualify for $135 with dependants takes an income very close to disqualifying you for assistance at all.

I prefer the Bottom Line live version, because of Harry’s lead-in to the song (talking about why he wrote it) and it’s a much slower tempo:

Love it. I have a Harry collection that has interviews between the songs and also a live version of Remember When, but I couldn’t find that one. I do so miss Harry Chapin. He was not only a tremendous singer/songwriter, but a phenomenal person who really cared about people.

I saw him live many, many times—particularly remember one concert, when both of his brothers were playing with the band, and they stayed onstage for HOURS, just having a great time. Then stayed by the swag table and signed autographs and shot the shit for another few hours. Magic.

YES!

AMERICAN intelligence agencies are to conduct a major investigation into how the Kremlin is infiltrating political parties in Europe, it can be revealed.

[…]

A dossier of “Russian influence activity” seen by The Sunday Telegraph identified Russian influence operations running in France, the Netherlands, Hungary as well as Austria and the Czech Republic, which has been identified by Russian agents as an entry-point into the Schengen free movement zone.
The US intelligence review will examine whether Russian security services are funding parties and charities with the intent of “undermining political cohesion”, fostering agitation against the Nato missile defence programme and undermining attempts to find alternatives to Russian energy.
Officials declined to say which parties could come into the probe but it is thought likely to include far-right groups including Jobbik in Hungary, Golden Dawn in Greece, the Northern League in Italy and France’s Front National which received a 9m euro (£6.9m) loan from a Russian bank in 2014.

I read in the newspaper about the extent to which East Germany had infiltrated West German television networks, to the point of having their people in program planning.

I came over in the 80’s expecting a different view of America than I was used to in our own media, and although hardly a patriotic chauvinist, I was sometimes offended by broadcasts that portrayed a highly distorted and false view of America.

In some market news out of the Middle East:

Prospect of the Islamic Republic pumping an additional 500,000 barrels a day sends stock markets in Dubai and Saudi Arabia into tailspin

Stock markets across the Middle East collapsed as the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran threatened to unleash a fresh wave of oil onto global markets that are already drowning in excess supply.

All seven stock markets in Gulf states tumbled as panic gripped traders. Dubai’s DFM General Index slumped 4.8pc to 2,682.56, while Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul All Share Index collapsed by 7pc to 5,409.35, its lowest level in almost five years.

The Iranian stock index gained 1pc, making it one of the best performing markets in the world with gains of 6pc since the start of the year.

The dramatic moves came following the historic report from the UN nuclear watchdog, which showed that Iran has met its obligations under the nuclear deal, clearing the way for the lifting of sanctions.

Morning everyone.

Dealing with spotty internet service up here. Got to a cabin up in the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee last night. My oldest son competed in a gymnastics competition in Knoxville on Saturday AM. He’s pretty good. Won 4 out of 6 events, won the All Around for his age group, and finished with the highest overall score of any age in the competition(couple hundred kids, ages 7-14). With the three day weekend, just a short trip down to Gatlinburg.

I’ve been up since the butt crack of dawn(it’s a me thing)and was about to go for a couple mile run. Looked out and saw what looked to be a smallish bear a couple hundred feet away. Waiting just a bit for the sun to come up some more. Don’t feel like dealing with any bears that might be Packers fans this morning.

Meanwhile, in the UK:

David Cameron has authorised an investigation into the foreign funding and support of jihadi and extremist groups in the UK, a development that could lead to a potential standoff with the government’s key Gulf ally Saudi Arabia.

Political pressure on Cameron to investigate extremist revenue streams in the UK has come from the Liberal Democrats who requested the inquiry in exchange for supporting the extension into Syria of British airstrikes against Islamic State.

The Home Office’s new extremism analysis unit has been directed by Downing Street to specifically examine the scale and origin of funding of extremist groups in the UK with a remit to follow overseas funding streams. Home Office sources would not give details on the level of resources which will be assigned to the inquiry. Its findings will be sent directly to the home secretary Theresa May and Downing Street this spring.

The Gulf kingdom has repeatedly been accused of funding mosques and groups with links to Islamist terrorism in the west. Last month Angela Merkel’s deputy, Sigmar Gabriel, told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper that the Saudi regime posed a danger to public security through its support for Wahhabi mosques around the world. Wahhabism, a fundamentalist form of Islam practised in Saudi Arabia, has been identified by the European parliament as a driver of global terrorism.

Gabriel said: “We have to make clear to the Saudis that the time of looking away is over. Wahhabi mosques all over the world are financed by Saudi Arabia.”

I agree. I’ve tried quitting before, many times, but always with only a middling drive to quit which ultimately led to failure. This time though, I was completely focused and sold on the idea of quitting and, so far, it’s made the difference.

The state of polling right now is just not very useful. Credible pollsters are just starting to switch to the more expensive methods using “likely voter’ models (which have their own issues). The RCP aggregate is heavily tied to right-leaning sources at the moment. (RCP is usually good later in the game, but their early stuff looks agenda-driven.)

Don’t do it. Do not follow unlawful orders if the Obama Administration fools decide to go “full retard.” No matter how eager the politicians like Harry Reid are for Ammon Bundy’s head, after the black eye Ammon and his family gave them at Bundy Ranch in 2014, and no matter how much they pressure you to “make an example” out of these guys, you cannot drop the hammer on a bunch of ranchers, cowboys, and veterans sitting in an empty building without it blowing up in all of our faces. Treat this with kid gloves, like the Montana Freeman standoff, instead of like the Waco standoff, or risk setting off a civil war.

Texas will get by OK. It’s Saudi Arabia that’s going to take it in the shorts over a further fall of oil prices.

North Dakota.

It’s the very expensive process of extracting the petroleum from low quality deposits that can’t survive such cheap petroleum from overseas.

In TX there are very many old wells that produce at very slow rates and will do so for years, costing very little in maintenance costs.

We’ll see. And even if North Dakota shuts down there are other more cheaply extracted shale formations elsewhere in the US. Fracking is in America to stay, in part because the US can now export oil again also. So domestic oil that US refineries aren’t set up to handle can still be extracted, but now it’ll be sold overseas.

I’ve got Meet The Press-like Bozo on and Bernie is getting more and more testy and turning up the heat on Hillary. He has definitely gone from talking in general terms about what he wants to do as president to mentioning Hillary in every statement.

I’m staying neutral as I want to see the Democrat side of things work out a candidate in as effective way as possible and hopefully keep it all about real topics and not personality and family issues.

I do want to say I don’t know if it is good for Bernie to get this involved in making everything about Hillary. Just a gut feeling, but to me he comes off more as the cranky old man with a scowl on his face than what I think worked the best for him prior to the last few weeks.

He seemed more the wacky old political science professor type and any scowl worked that way as it seemed he was driven by the numbers and facts. Now he seems more driven by answering Hillary and it makes him more a politician.

One thing though…the debate tonight should be a bit more lively.

And oh yeah, Hillary was on with Chuckling Todd too. She seemed pretty relaxed and straight to the point. No laughing anything off. She seems to be getting into her real campaign mode now too.

And we are off…

Central Ohio is forecast for 5° tonight (-10° wind chill) tonight, high of 12° tomorrow (-1° wind chill) and back to 5° tomorrow night (-10° wind chill). Fortunately it heads back up to mid to high 30’s through the week. Not thrilled…but overall this is much better than last year.

Arrest was first made since group took over buildings at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on January 2

Medenbach was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle

If I understand it, it isn’t the river water that’s the source of the lead, it’s the city pipes. The water’s acid level is higher than the previous source so it’s pulling lead as it’s transported.

Yes. The river water is allowing the lead and heavy metals in the old pipes to leach out. The Detroit water and the ultimately new water source that was being planned both have lower pH. Adding to this is that everyone knew that the pH of the river water would be a problem, but could be abated with treatment. They didn’t do it.

Thanks GOP!

Actually, the Robertsons might be the only right-wing reality TV people who don’t equate French culture with socialism, though that’s only because they live in Louisiana and actually know Cajuns and Creoles.

You don’t seem to know much about Louisiana. The northern part, packed with Bible-beating born-again Baptist and evangelical rednecks like Phil Robertson, might as well be a different state or even a different country from the southern Catholic, Cajun part, and the two regard each other with considerable disdain. True, most north Louisianians know a Cajun or two but their view of Cajun culture is basically of a group of comical, immoral and therefore not sufficiently conservative pagans who happen to cook well, and has nothing to do with France or “French culture.”

It works the other way too. When I married a Baton Rouge woman one of her aunts said to me at the reception, “I understand you’re from up North.”

“No, ma’am,” I said. “I’ve lived in New York for the past seventeen years, but I was born and raised in Shreveport.”

“That’s what I meant,” she replied icily.

Bear in mind the late, great Roger Ebert’s review of Pearl Harbor:

Pearl Harbor is a two-hour movie squeezed into three hours, about how on Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese staged a surprise attack on an American love triangle. Its centerpiece is 40 minutes of redundant special effects, surrounded by a love story of stunning banality. The film has been directed without grace, vision, or originality, and although you may walk out quoting lines of dialog, it will not be because you admire them.”

When it came out originally it was billed in theaters as being in “SenSurround!”
Theaters added extra bass speakers so the explosions rumbled the place a bit.

This was before the fancy 5-7 channel sound systems they use today, back then theaters just had basic two channel stereo.

It happens regularly up here. In fact, we typically get 1-2 days where the temperature drops down toward -40 degrees (F or C), and about a week or so of lows below -20 degrees F (-28.9 degrees C). This particular cold spell is a little warmer than most, with no temperatures in the -40 range and only 2-3 days around -20. The wind chill was well below -40 all across the state this morning; it is legit dangerous to go outside uncovered right now.

I think it was the nostalgia, but the first story also didn’t suffer from Bay’s politics that creeped into the later ones. It definitely benefited from having to be written as a strong first movie. You really can tell in the later movies that Bay does not like Obama.

The only good thing I can say about Pearl Harbor was that it prompted me to watch Tora! Tora! Tora! for the first time when I was teenager to get an accurate portrayal of the attack.

We called Pearl harbor Bora Bora Bora.

We called Pearl harbor Bora Bora Bora.

And Bay couldn’t find enough material in the actual attack that he had to mash “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” into it as well.

You might be surprised. With tensions in the world being what they are, a film where a NATO nation’s Spec Ops guys go out and waste Islamist fanatics might do very well in nations which have fears about Radical Islamist terrorism.

gee…just like a certain other movie did in places with the reverse fearmongering tactics.

Broken landing leg? At least it did land where it was supposed to.

On a barge the size of a football field in not exactly flat seas:

Wind Direction (WDIR): NNW ( 330 deg true )
5-day plot - Wind Speed Wind Speed (WSPD): 9.7 kts
5-day plot - Wind Gust Wind Gust (GST): 11.7 kts
5-day plot - Wave Height Wave Height (WVHT): 11.5 ft
5-day plot - Dominant Wave Period Dominant Wave Period (DPD): 19 sec
5-day plot - Average Period Average Period (APD): 11.5 sec

Still pretty fucking impressive.

Yep. Before the feed got knocked out I said to MrBWS that the deck of the droneship was moving up and down, and back and forth so much that I doubted the landing would be picture perfect.

Similar movies:

Zero Dark 30
Domestic: $95,720,716 72.1%
+ Foreign: $37,100,000 27.9%

American Sniper
Domestic: $350,126,372 64.0%
+ Foreign: $197,300,000 36.0%

Lone Survivor
Domestic: $125,095,601 80.8%
+ Foreign: $29,707,311 19.2%

And those all had Oscar buzz to boost their international #s. So, unless it really bucks the odds, it’s not going to be a big international hit.

What, you mean like when someone says they “actually” have a grandkid and you pretend they were making some sort of bizarre oblique reference to Bernie Sanders?

re: #276 Dr Lizardo

That’s what I’m thinking; either that, or a lot of people just figured that this day would simply never come.

To be fair, assuming the Republicans would find a way to fuck it up somehow was quite understandable.
