And Now, the Democrats Debate Like Adults

Instead of fear-mongering clowns
Politics • Views: 50,384

YouTube

Tonight’s Democratic debate is brought to us by NBC News and YouTube. The participants: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley.

In a way, the Democratic debates aren’t as entertaining as the GOP clown shows, because the Democratic candidates usually manage to say more than a sentence or two at a time that isn’t packed with fear-mongering lies, politically-motivated distortions and personal attacks.

But even though the outrage/entertainment factor isn’t as high, it’s always a bit of a relief to see that not all of America’s politicians are total scoundrels.

re: #259 Belafon

Is it a bad thing or a good thing that Republicans avoid answering the questions asked?

The problem is one of who is in control. Trump is always in control (or at least he is not easily moved.) Democrats too easily roll over for Chuck Todd (and perhaps more accurately, his producers.)

When Reagan grabbed that mic at his gathering and put GHWB in place - that was dramatic and showed who would be the winner.

HBO’s 50 Shades of Grey is overlapping the debate. Do I want to see a woman abused and humiliated, or do I watch some soft-core porn?

(Amazing how well that trope worked with Mad Max/TPGOP.)

Chuck Todd is everything wrong with television journalism, incarnated in one smug asshole.

Do you want to see her fight back successfully or not? That makes the choice pretty clear. (BTW, that was the #16 movie of last year, which is odd considering no one admitted to watching it.)

They why isn’t this on ESPN?

Ok, I’m being persnickity. But I really don’t like this feeling of having to gin up a sports contest, or using war terms.

OT, but Mrs. FBW and I celebrated our anniversary by going to a movie in one of those little artsy theaters, like we used to when we were young. (“Trumbo” with Bryan Cranston).

It’s funny - when we were young going to the little artsy theaters, everyone there was our age. I noticed the same thing today - everyone was our CURRENT age. It’s like the Artsy Movie Theater is a generational thing The Kids never picked up on!

Random thought about the upcoming Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire Primary.

I understand the whole idea about winning early, showing supporters and more importantly donors that you can be seen as a viable (Republican or Democratic) candidate.

But srysly… could we pick two states that could have as little diversity in many ways to hold such importance over candidates for President. Just seems a bit stupid.

Sadly, until we blow up a few states, we won’t be able to get out of this. Iowa and New Hampshire will push their events back to right after the previous election to stay first.

That’s what I see as the downside of a Sanders Presidency - sure, it’s great, but can it PASS. This is why I roll my eyes when discussing this stuff with my brother. Passion and committment are great, but compromise is how change happens.

I like his dreams, I honestly do, but with the Congress he’s likely to enjoy I don’t think he could pass a pea-sized turd with a half-gallon of Metamucil.

The South Carolina Democratic Party nominated Alvin Greene for the Senate in 2010, even though he literally did nothing put pay his filing fee. The Mississippi Democratic Party nominated a truck driver for governor last year who didn’t even vote for himself in the primary. Giving these state parties money is throwing it away.

Yeah. Obama got a Dem majority in the House and a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and the best we could do was the ACA. “Medicare For Everyone” would require Republicans all sleeping through election day.

Still, it’s better than the GOP’s approach of “Medicare For No One”,

Don’t get me started on the 2010 Democratic primary in SC. I have page after page of spreadsheets showing what a total sham that primary was. (If you want to really see how bad it was, look at the primary contest in the 6th house district—that was even more ridiculous than the Alvin Gerene nomination.) There were a whole lot of dirty politics going on, and it wasn’t the Dems.

Democrats are already in good shape there, with Democratic appointees in the majority on eight of the 12 circuit courts. Of course, another term would help a lot.

I mean, it will be a frustrating four years, and winning a second term would be historically extremely unlikely. But so much better than the alternative.

These Bernheads sound like the PUMA (Party Unity My Ass) Hillary supporting folks in 2008 who insisted that they would never vote for Obama if he got the nod instead of their preferred candidate. My understanding is that 95% of them eventually voted for Obama in the end, so my guess is that the Bernheads won’t let the Republican win.

I like Bernie’s ideas better, but I think Hillary has more savvy in getting hers sold and has a more dynamic approach to events.

This is why I hope Hillary wins but has Bernie as fairly high level and listened to adviser on economics and labor.

Yes, Reince, we’ll go watch a film by the guy who managed to botch the history of the Pearl Harbor attacks. Meanwhile we can read about the Marine Barracks bombing in Beiruit and see what Reagan did and how you don’t care abot that since you fap to Reagan’s carcass.

And all three are way better for the White House.

That’s where I am. I just am skeptical about how Bernie will implement his agenda. His agenda is much closer to where I am ideologically than Hilalry but I just don’t see him as being as effective in it.

Sorry if my words about Preibus masturbating to REagan’s corpse were a litlte inappropriate (I’ve had a little bit to drink tonight) but I’m tired of the Republicans acting like Benghazi was the worst thing ever while ignoring their own fiascos that happened under a President they want to elevate with Washington, Lincoln, and FDR.

Did I see commercials for another Michael Bay film coming out soon? If so, what would be up with that? Two films released in a few weeks seems like one film just may not have been all the serious and the other one is his bet for success. I kind of wonder if he was paid to produce 13 Hours and the success of it is nothing more than what it can do politically.

I suggest a slight change.

re: #342 Belafon

What about the 60 diplomats that died under Bush?

Exactly, the way the RNC and GOP wants to tell is, Benghazi is the only time we’ve had an embassy or consulate attacked. Benghazi was tragic and my heart goes out to the family and friends of Ambassador Stevens and the other three men killed that day but they were not children, they knew the risk they took. What made Benghazi arguably uniquely tragic is our ambassador was killed but we’ve actually had less diplomats killed in the Obama years. Also to add, we’ve had more investigations of Benghazi than 9/11 which had tons more people killed.

A very pleasant surprise on Downton Abbey.

[Embedded content]

Pleasant, but not such a surprise.

What made me happy (not sure if anybody but me was surprised) is

that Edith tossed the editor who needed tossing, got the issue out anyway, and seems to have found a man who could be a supportive new editor, a beau who respects and appreciates her career, or maybe he’ll be both.

About time Edith got a break.

Hell, no, and he knows it! Dude wants the perks of being POTUS without having to do the work. I guess he feels he won’t have to work too hard because he’ll be taking orders from his billionaire backers and special interest groups like Focus on the Family and the NRA. If I live to be 100, I’ll never forget that Grover Norquist said in the run=up to last presidential election that the GOP/TP only needed someone who could sign bills sent over by a GOP/TP Congress, and he meant it. After Obama entered office, Steve Benen explained why the GOP/TPers were so pissed off with him—-when “W” was in office, he’d call them and tell them what he wanted, and they’d write the bill and pass it. Obama expected them to be problem-solvers. The lazy b*st*rds.
