Democratic Debate: The Wrap-Up

A good night for Sanders
Politics • Views: 53,989

Here’s a second thread to discuss what we just witnessed in the Democratic debate in Charleston, South Carolina. One big take-away for me: I’m not Bernie Sanders’ biggest fan. But I have huge respect for the way he continues to resist the media’s invitations to dive into the gutter.

My short, yes cynical, take aways:

Bernie is old.
Martin is doing the Ben Carson schtick.
Hillary is … Hillary.

Bernie looked old in the first fifteen minutes, but then he got his energy. Hillary was on the attack the first hour…someone told her to cool her jets at the break because she completely changed her tone. O’Malley landed some great punches by being honest.

I disagree.

What we see this year is a problem the DNC has harbored for a while - not generating younger politicians on the national stage.

If the DNC cannot get younger people in front of a national audience you can bet the RNC will be able to push their younger candidates.

I’d be happy to have any of the three in the White House compared to any of the alternatives.

I think the biggest question I have right now is which of the three would be able to do the most to bring Capitol Hill around. My pragmatic answer right now is, by far, Hillary. I have a hard time seeing Sanders working well with the Hill, or, really, with anyone who’s not 100% on his side. And that’s an important role for a president to be able to play.

Well the short answer is no-one can bring Capitol Hill around as long as the GOP controls it. The question to me is who is best equipped to work around Congress. That, I think, is Hillary.

My Facebook timeline may very well not reflect proportionately the rest of America.

I’m certain my reading/viewing habits do not.

But in my little circles, the “heat” is with GOP, Trump or Cruz or one of the others. Other than my one in-law who keeps forwarding Sander’s propaganda, I have no one who is really a big Democratic operative.

Which is strange, given that one of my relatives has run as a Democrat at the state level. But he sort of doesn’t get all that pushy about things like this Presidential campaign.

At least Bernie “owns” an issue. Namely, the problem with funding of campaigns. I think most people see this as his issue.

I don’t know what Hillary owns. Martin doesn’t seem to own anything, and that is his problem - he’s not identified with any hot button.

Pretty much. All plans are perfect until the first contact with the enemy. What you do to adapt to challenges is what makes for a leader. Given Sanders’ reaction to sudden challenges (the BLM activists, the hissy fit his staff threw over a foreign policy question in the wake of Paris, the whole theft of Clinton computer records), I’m rather skeptical of his make up to handle the Presidency.

What’s interesting is Kaine was probably after Blago the first governor to endorse Obama. As you know, I like Kaine quite a bit. What’s also interesting is O’Malley was an early Clinton endorser in 2008.

By “bringing the Hill around,” I meant having the coattails to get more Democrats elected in 2016/2018/2020.

Insofar as Bernie isn’t even, technically, a Democrat, that would seem to give a considerable edge to Hillary.

It’s kinda like when DF (accidentally?) reveals his essential humanity and then we’re left wondering why the family GOP voting pattern remains so important to him anyway. We know he’s a good, truly christian even, man in his soul so why can’t he vote that way? Will he be able to change when they pass onto the next world? Or will he still be stuck voting for things that are against what he has, repeatedly, shown us that he really believes?

Frum has the same problem. He knows the truth. He is not as evil as those he professes to follow. Yet he still apparently votes for that evil.

I don’t know what to think about it. I do know and appreciate DF so for him I burn a candle or three because that’s a prayer he can understand.

What we see this year is a problem the DNC has harbored for a while - not generating younger politicians on the national stage.

If the DNC cannot get younger people in front of a national audience you can bet the RNC will be able to push their younger candidates.

I remember watching Obama’s speech at the 2004 DNC. My first thought of him was, “he’s going to be president.” I just didn’t expect it to be four years later.

But the GOP fell victim to the same problem in 2008 (well, really, they fall victim to it every cycle because it’s rare when someone wins the GOP nomination on their first try). After holding the White House for two terms, they only had retreads to turn to for some reason.

Of course, one of the problems that the Democrats seem to have is they don’t have many young governors or senators that could run. So you get the rather dismal field we have this year.

Veteran police officer, gunman killed in Holladay shooting

HOLLADAY — A veteran Unified police officer was shot and killed Sunday while searching for a man who had just been in a serious car accident, sparking a shootout moments later that left the suspected gunman dead and a second officer wounded.

Officer Doug Barney, 45, died after being shot once in the head while pursuing a man who police say had a “propensity for possession of weapons” and had walked away from the nearby crash scene. Barney served 18 years as a police officer — including a dozen years battling cancer — and was remembered by fellow officers as a loving husband and father of three.

I know this - I cannot vote for Trump, or any of the remaining Republicans.

But that doesn’t mean I think highly of the Democratic candidates who remain.

It seems our society is pregnant with the next version of American politics, and we are now seeing the sunset of the political framework that FDR built.

Donald Trump may be the future. Not so much in substance, but in style.

That is, Presidential candidates are not people who have slogged through 20 years of politics for lesser offices, but rather celebrity superstars, who use their fame to get attention during the campaign season.

NBC/U pulls up a Youtube video of some young man with 5 milion followers.

Now why did NBC pick this young man? For his inherent wisdom? For his witticisms? Or, rather simply because he has 5 million followers?

Now think about the question(s) he asked.

Now… think about the answers he got.

Now compare the answers he got to what JFK said:

The Minnesota Republic is pleased to host Milo Yiannopolous on campus as part of his spring tour to discuss his (least) favorite topic: Feminism.

The Republic is currently working to find a member of the University of Minnesota’s Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies Department to debate Milo on the (supposed) virtues of modern, third wave, “quantum superstate” feminism. Further details regarding room location, and any other information will be posted just as soon as it becomes available.

This event will be free and open to all members of the public.

Milo Yiannopoulos is a journalist, broadcaster and internet personality. He is one of the best-known cultural commentators in Europe and his profile in America is rising rapidly thanks to fearless reporting about internet culture, video games, feminism, free speech and the effect of technology on society. He is a leading figure in the cultural libertarian movement and a senior editor at breitbart.com.

If he actually gets there, I want to have a significant number of Lizards at the ready (with video) to show just how much of a self-hating narcissistic choad he really is.

I told her I was a freeheel skier and she told me “I’d like to try that sometime, when I have the time.” “I’ll teach you!” I blurted out.

Such a difference between the Republican and Democrat debates. The Republicans seem like a bunch of very angry people who do little but attack Obama, and each other, often without any substantive policy discussion. It took me three goes to actually finish watching the last Republican debate.

I think I learned more about the policies of the Democrat nominees in this debate, than I have learned about the Republican nominees in all of their debates. And the Democrat nominees also understand diplomacy, which starts with how they treat each other. And while there was certainly some harsh words directed towards the Republicans, it’s nothing like the anger that emanates from the Republicans where outrage and anger appear to be their only selling point.

I think the only question is which of the Democrat nominees would make the best president whereas with the Republican’s, it’s which of the nominees would be the least harmful to not only the United States, but to the world.

That’s a nordic sport, as in cross-country skiing. We need a downhill alpine version of biathlon. An extreme skiing version of biathlon, where you have to ski a course involving gates, negotiation of steep cliff-y terrain (with speed and style points) *and* shooting a damned target with a rifle with accuracy.

That *might* grab Murka’s attention.

Yet in the one-to-one matchups the numbers are:

My overall impressions:
Hillary started slow, but warmed up. Tried to match Bernie’s tone, but pulled back. I liked her cheerleading for Obama. I don’t feel her age is holding her back. I still plan to vote for her.

Bernie came across as too loud. He interrupted and talked over moderators and the other candidates. Instead of showing scope of his knowledge, he just kept hammering on money. That may be what he wanted to do, but I wanted to hear more range.

O’Malley did pretty well, and impressed me more this time. He needs to get a shirt that fits his neck. It is petty, but that bothered me. I would like to see him get some job in the administration, providing it is a Democratic one.

No comparison between the Ds and the Rs. I did wish for something on domestic terrorism, and SCOTUS.

We’re getting some good rain here in the SF Bay Area, over an inch in the last 8 hours, bringing my rain gauge up to 8.81 inches for the season, so a 12% gain. Still no Pineapple Express storms but they tend to form in February and March during El Nino (that’s Spanish for “the nino”) years. P.E. storms are big storms that draw clouds all the way down to Hawaii and drop 2 inches of rain a day for days at a time. A good El Nino season should deliver 24+ inches for the year in SFBA. (California measures the rain season from July 1st of the year to June 30th of the following year.)

Oxfam report finds the richest 62 people own as much as half the world’s population

Sixty-two of the world’s richest people own the same amount of wealth as 3.6 billion people, Oxfam says.

The charity is using the statistic to highlight how enormous the inequality gap has grown over recent years.
Five years ago the dubious honour of having more wealth than half the world’s population went to a group of 388 people.
Oxfam said the world’s richest 62 people has increased 44 per cent, or about half a trillion dollars, over that time.
During the same period, the wealth of the bottom half has dropped 41 per cent, or over a trillion dollars.
Oxfam released the report ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, later this week.

Funny reddit thread I saw linked. The first comment makes a good point. It was Hillary’s chance to attack Bernie and she didn’t strike any death blows. She also had advisors monitoring responses because after the break she changed her tone, eased back on the attacks, and flipped on the nice lady voice instead of the stern bad-ass one.

Regardless of who won the debate, this was Hillary Clinton’s chance to attack Bernie Sanders effectively and stop his momentum, and she failed to do that. This is going to turn into a very interesting primary contest.

re: #176 darthstar

Funny reddit thread I saw linked. The first comment makes a good point. It was Hillary’s chance to attack Bernie and she didn’t strike any death blows. She also had advisors monitoring responses because after the break she changed her tone, eased back on the attacks, and flipped on the nice lady voice instead of the stern bad-ass one.

The Hillary hypers are quiet in my TL this morning.

So this photo has been making the rounds on Facebook in my parts (Montgomery Co., TX.). It was a Christian youth event, and apparently Jesus made an appearance. The comments are hysterical; I think the lead singer is being overexposed by someone’s flash or phone flashlight as someone is recording video, but that’s just me. It’s just comical what people believe down here.

All you need to know about King is this. One of the most popular GOP candidates is Ted Cruz. Ted Cruz said the Senate would have been better off with 100 Jesse Helms. Jesse Helms was a bigger asshole than Strom Thurmond in his Senate career.

Goldwater is how the GOP went with Nixon getting 35-40% of the AA vote to just around 5. I think Ford or H.W Bush got the highest percentage since. Perhaps Nixon in ‘68 but Nixon really alienated a lot of past African-American supporters in 1968. The GOP screwed itself with African-American voters a lot like how they have with Hispanics by pandering to the bigots.

They base that on MLK’s wingnut niece ignoring that MLK’s widow and children are and were still very liberal. I just wish conservatives would be honest about MLK. They hated him then, they called him a communist and now they want to claim him as their own since he’s a beloved American icon. I appreciate the more honest conservatives because they know that MLK wasn’t one of theirs. It wasn’t just race. When MLK died, he was helping organize sanitation workers, yep union organizing. And he was a dove on Vietnam.

Founded in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) extended into almost every southern state by 1870 and became a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era policies aimed at establishing political and economic equality for blacks.

For the KKK? I think they still hate Catholics. Interestingly though, the first KKK wasn’t really particularly anti-Catholic that I know of. The second KKK even though it hated the largest amount of people also had the biggest success. I think I read something like up to 1/3 of Indiana Protestant White Males were members in the 20’s at one point. Frankly the KKK’s legacy isn’t Democratic or Republican. Both parties had members and both parties also fought it. The KKK though was and always is a reactionary right wing group. It’s like that with Civil Rights too. People of both parties fought for and against civil rights but the fight for civil rights always was about progressivism versus conservatism and to another degree regionalism.

I mean conservatives and Republicans seem to think it’s merely a concidence that Southerners started embracing their party as the Democratic party nationally grew more supportive of Civil Rights. Those old Southern Democrats didn’t die. They started voting for the party of the hated Lincoln even though some never actually switched. And frankly Southern Democrats were never progressive. It wasn’t just Civil Rights they were right wing on. The New Deal too and labor rights. Even applications that can create quite large files, like Photoshop or Excel, still work fine on a 9 year old Mac.

But try to open certain webpages - nope, not going to happen.

Because the RNC obviously feels that Senator Sanders is the easier of the two to beat in the general election.

The RNC was also convinced that Mitt Romney was going to win, even after he’d clearly lost. So what they think is really of little concern.

No, it’s not. Someone could get themselves electrocuted, and/or short out major pieces of electronics that could take days or weeks to replace. The damage to the equipment could be significant.

And these asshats are getting all of their crimes caught on tape. A prosecutor will have no trouble proving all of these crimes, along with conspiracy to commit - putting the Bundy idiots in a world of hurt.

Domestic terrorism against the police.. So, this happened late last night in a real small town in a small county in central Ohio. No idea why this guy decided to go hunting cops. White dude appears to be late 30s or so.

Columbus NBC4i - Police officer shot and killed overnight in Knox Co; Officer and suspect identified

The suspect’s ex-girlfriend called 911 and told officers that the suspect was going out with the intention of hurting officers.

DANVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — A Danville police officer was shot and killed overnight in Knox County.

According to the Knox County Sheriff David Shaffer, Officer Thomas Cottrell was killed in the line of duty late Sunday night.

Sheriff Shaffer said around 11:20 p.m. Sunday, the Knox County dispatch center received a call stating that police officers in Danville were in danger. The woman told dispatchers that her ex-boyfriend, Herschel Ray Jones had left with weapons and was looking to kill an officer.

Dispatchers then tried to contact the Danville officer on duty, but were unsuccessful. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office then searched the village.

Shortly before midnight, deputies found the body of Officer Thomas Cottrell on the ground behind the municipal building. His gun had been taken and his cruiser was missing.

Investigators say Jones was seen running from a residence on East Washington Street around 1:36 a.m. Monday. After a foot chase, Jones was taken into custody.

A woman who was outside of the residence was also taken into custody and later released.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident with the help of the Ohio Bureau of Investigation.

Danville is a village in Knox County with a population of just over 1,000 people. The police department employs six people and Chief Daniel J. Weckesser was appointed to the job on January 4.

They gain just by prolonging the primary, making the candidates buy more ads and airtime. Also hope a close race will turn nasty damaging the candidate who survives for the general election. Boosting Bernie against Hillary adds to the division of the Dem base at no cost to them.

There’s so much wishful thinking there that there’s zero chance it could be pulled off.

Romney isn’t going to be a back-door candidate. Or any candidate. And he certainly wont be any more successful in the general election than he was last time.

The GOP has turned Romney into a loony liberal the way that they’ve shifted to the extreme right. There’s no way right wingers who think that Cruz or Rubio aren’t conservative enough (or Trump) would somehow buy into Romney being conservative enough.

It’s no true Conservative™ writ large.

It would be serious karma tho, if not only one of those twits got electrocuted but wound up destroying the substation - it would not only force them out but I’d also bet the substation is also private property of some power cooperative-so not only would they be facing federal and state charges but a private entity would be coming after them for destruction of property and loss of income.

Walker will continue being involved in matters involving Colorado City and Hildale since he recently began representing the land trust there. The trust used to be controlled by the church, but a judge took it out of the church’s hands and put it in receivership several years ago.

In his 37-year law career, Walker has worked on a number of cases that deal with the intersection of religious freedom and the law. At times he has been on the other side, defending religious freedom from government intervention.

In the 1980s he defended a Nogales, Ariz., reverend involved in the Sanctuary Movement. The reverend was among several religious leaders who faced federal criminal charges for helping to smuggle Central Americans fleeing violence into the U.S.

“To me, the test is — is it religious freedom to protect people in their religion? Or is it religious freedom to hurt other people?” Walker said. “If people claim religious freedom in order to hurt other people, that’s not religion.”

Well, Trump had one of his rallys here in Columbus and I have heard nothing about Trump since then. No media, no buzz in the community. Nothing.

At the rally the crowd started out fairly large and by the end of the show half the people left. That tells me more of the people went to see The Trump Show™ for the reality star and was more interested in seeing him ‘go Trump’ than looking for a candidate.

Has anyone heard Trump mention the great crowd he got in Ohio? He mentions Iowa, New Hampshire, Carolina and some other places and he talks about the crowds and enthusiasm at those…Columbus doesn’t seemed to have happened.

It will not be easy for Trump to carry this state. We are too purple…but in many ways still a union blue state that is just mixed up due the rust belt issues. Here in Columbus and all the other big 4 Ohio cities (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo) we’ve been pretty lucky to turn to technology. And that change is changing the politics. We are getting more and more like an East coast city.

So I gather that Facebook, unlike Twitter, allows racists to flourish on their media outlets. Maniacs like Chucky should be banned from polite society.

I’m thinking when this mess finally burns into ashes we’ll be left with either a Cruz/Rubio or a Trump/Rubio ticket. I just can’t see Cruz and Trump as running mates.

I don’t think the VP is going to come from one of the candidates. They’ll pair them up with a governor.

I also imagine he’s got some union busting in his past which will certainly come out. I’d be shocked if he carried either PA or OH.

Some of his bankruptcies involved construction workers, electricians and plumbers having to take a 30% reduction. They contracted to do the work, did the work, then he hits them with “if you don’t accept the reduced pay, I’ll let the project fail and you get nothing.”

Yeah I don’t think Trump is going to have traction with union workers.

Depends who the nominee is. If it’s Trump, I think they look west. If Cruz or Rubio, more midwest.

It’s only illegal if you can prove that was his intention from the start. Otherwise, it’s just “utilizing the bankruptcy law to my advantage, I’m a good businessman.” The lenders and investors had to take a bath too. He lost ownership of the project, but walked away with hundreds of millions in “consulting fees.”

Yeah. For individuals, repaying debts is a moral obligation. Personal bankruptcy is tantmount to public confession of gross irresponsibility.

For businesses? it’s ‘utilizing the law to your advantage’, a smart business move.

When caught being a shitty politician, Republicans generally fall back to the idea that calling them out is “politicizing” an issue. That way they can claim that they’re the only ones really focused on addressing the issue…you know, except when it’s other guy’s fault, then that’s just “good politics.”
