Another Fantastic NPR Tiny Desk Concert: River Whyless

These NPR Tiny Desk concerts are almost always terrific. Here’s another great new group I’ve never heard of, from Asheville, North Carolina, with some very creative instrumentation including a vintage Royal typewriter.

January 19, 2016 by BOB BOILEN

This immensely talented band from Asheville, N.C., was my favorite discovery at this year’s Americana Music Festival. River Whyless builds its music around fiddle, guitar and harmonies, with imagination and textures that set the band apart from many of its acoustic and folk-based peers.

At the Tiny Desk, River Whyless’ members used a typewriter for rhythm, a toy piano for whimsy and a harmonium for mood, as well as a gong, multiple odd percussive accents and subtle guitar effects. There are hints of Paul Simon in their inflections and poetic phrasing, and their songs feel fresh and nicely crafted. “Life Crisis” is a song from 2015’s self-titled EP, but the others are new to me; here’s hoping we’ll have a new album in 2016.

River Whyless EP is available now:
iTunes: itunes.apple.com
Amazon: amazon.com

Set List:
“Life Crisis”
“Sailing Away”
“Baby Brother”

Credits:
Producers: Bob Boilen, Morgan Walker; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Morgan Walker, Niki Walker, Julia Reihs; Production Assistant: Kate Drozynski; photo by Jun Tsuboike/NPR

So, Trump pulled that idiotic video showing him supporting US troops by using footage of a bunch of Russians with Soviet era medals.

That’s some classy A number one yugeness.

As a reminder:

Trump’s honoring veterans. Soviet style

And that’s the least bad thing Trump did today. Ponder that as he has yet to take down the retweet of the neo-Nazi/white supremacist.

Centrists, both-siderists and so-called GOP moderates need to really deal with the open sewer that Trump’s candidacy is exposing.

Silence about neo-Nazi shit is consent to neo-Nazi shit.

Both siderism to pretend neo-Nazi shit doesn’t matter is approval of neo-Nazi shit.

Pretending that neo-Nazi shit in your party doesn’t matter because ‘the Democrats are worse’ is a lie and gives aid and comfort to neo-Nazis.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has altered a campaign ad that was posted Friday morning after it was discovered that a shot in the film featured Russian veterans instead of Americans.

Josh Perry, a campaign aide for GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz, tweeted out images of the soldiers’ medals that clearly show prominent Russian symbols like the Communist hammer and sickle.

Just had my third customer service disaster with Comcast in just over 2 years. One thing I have learned that I would like to pass along to others unfortunate enough to be stuck with Comcast: never waste your time arguing for account credit with anyone over the phone. They will transfer you over to “billing” which is Comcast code for “the nastiest people on staff”.

Instead, go to their website here and click on the “Send Tom Feedback” link at the bottom. You enter you tale of woe in a form, get a confirmation email, then within a few hours someone responds generally giving you what you were refused on the phone.

Once again, every American who is not a Time Warner stockholder owes Senator Al Franken a debt of gratitude for literally being the only politician willing to voice serious concern over giving this horrible company more power than it already has.

The upshot is that my new generation X1 cable box/DVR is up and running. It is clearly a snazzier interface than I have been using for years and I greatly appreciate some of the new features…but in other ways it is as bad or worse than the old one.

I am praying that Google Fiber makes it to my area within the next year.

why ther is not a bigger hue and cry about the dangers of jingoism and the relationship that those ideals hold with the rise of dangerous demagogues.

Two reasons (that are actually one reason):

Because we have a party that’s devoted itself to jingoism, fear, and empty bellicosity, and refuses to surrender those tools because, dammit, they work so well at stopping critical thinking while engaging panicky decisions that seem expedient.

And because the same party has been involved in a cultural project of re-writing history such that the dangerous of jingoism and demagoguery are attributable to irreligiousity and sexual impropriety, and, dammit, they’re not going to forego their favorite mythopoetic bludgeon just because there’s an actual upsurge in stupid violent fuckwittery.

I am mostly muting the ordinarily fun follows who have gone batshit insane lately. However, I foresee a fair bit of unfollowing/blocking coming up when the losing side throws a collective tantrum.

I have some significant issues with Hillary, but I think she is the best chance to prevent Trump or Cruz selecting 2-4 Supreme Court judges. In any case, I will immediately throw my support (financial and otherwise) behind the nominee as soon as this is clear. Anyone not able to do this for any reason is basically declaring they want the right to own the SCOTUS for the next generation and is no friend of mine.

Veteran Climate Science Denialist Bob Carter Dies of Heart Attack

Bob Carter has died.

To most members of the general public, the name of that Australian geologist and paleontologist will barely register a flicker of neurons in the temporal lobe.

But to the global community of professional and amateur climate science denialists, misinformers and opponents of climate policy, Carter was an influential giant.

He died, aged 74, in hospital in his hometown of Townsville, Queensland, after suffering a heart attack.

I have written many stories featuring Bob Carter over the last decade or so and none of them have been complimentary.

[…]

Eventually all these old denial-machine folk will die off… but it will be too late to undo their damage of providing cover for our political systems’ inaction.

Yeah, but it was being shot live at 9:00 pm when there’s already a couple inches of snow on the ground and the woman was buying an absurd amount of stuff there.

I have a feeling the conversation with the kids when they left was something like, “Come on kids! We have to go to the liquor store so mommy doesn’t get DTs if we get snowed in.”

Outcast-from-fundamentalism Peter Enns has another take on the case of the faculty member getting the boot from Wheaton:

WHEATON COLLEGE VS. LARYCIA HAWKINS : MAYBE IT’S ABOUT EVOLUTION (IT’S ALWAYS EVOLUTION)

[…]

My reader then proceeded to explain to me something I have indeed missed completely: Hawkins tied her public “Muslims and Christians worship the same God” business to biological evolution. The following is an excerpt from Hawkins’s offending Facebook post, which was published in major news outlets like The Atlantic.

I don’t love my Muslim neighbor because s/he is American.

I love my Muslim neighbor because s/he deserves love by virtue of her/his human dignity.

I stand in human solidarity with my Muslim neighbor because we are formed of the same primordial clay, descendants of the same cradle of humankind-a cave in Sterkfontein, South Africa that I had the privilege to descend into to plumb the depths of our common humanity in 2014… .

Hawkins, it would appear, thinks biological evolution accounts for human origins. The problem is that Wheaton does not. Wheaton’s faith statement says:

[…]

As Enns notes in his title, it’s always about evolution.

With fundamentalists - always.

NASA trying to be tricksy on the twitter search bots?

Resembling an opulent diamond tapestry, this image from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope shows a glittering star cluster that contains a collection of some of the brightest stars seen in our Milky Way galaxy. Called Trumpler 14, it is located 8,000 light-years away in the Carina Nebula, a huge star-formation region. Because the cluster is only 500,000 years old, it has one of the highest concentrations of massive, luminous stars in the entire Milky Way.

3) Profit.

For the gnomes, where the profit comes from is mysterious. For the GOP, it is very clear. Idiots like Ben Domenech are well-paid parts of the right wing noise machine.

I’ve done that. But usually when there is already 4-5” on the ground since for me it was easier to shovel 4-6” of snow twice than a foot of snow once. Plus, since my house sat on the edge of a gully if I shifted some snow correctly I could get the wind to scour over half the driveway clear since it would blow the snow over into spots I had previously cleared.

To be fair, I grew up in the little ice age 1970s in central Illinois and I learned that there was snow on the ground from late November to March, we could expect an ice storm in April, and though pools opened after Memorial Day, they weren’t warm until mid June. From my experience, it is not hard to understand why people who can’t tell the difference between weather and climate don’t understand what is happening. It should be an easy matter to educate the populace.

Hawkins, it would appear, thinks biological evolution accounts for human origins. The problem is that Wheaton does not. Wheaton’s faith statement says:

[…]

As Enns notes in his title, it’s always about evolution.

With fundamentalists - always.

Well, this is something I’ve always wondered—is creationism racist at bottom? Because you never see Adam and Eve depicted as any other color than white. And we know from science and the fossil record that humans came out of Africa and were likely darker-skinned. I could imagine quite a few fundamentalists/evangelicals thinking that Of Course Evolution Has To Be Wrong, I Am Not Descended From Anyone With A Black Skin. You know, because racism.

Maybe I’m just wrong. But I don’t think so.

BLM Considers Reinstating Hammond Grazing Leases

The Bureau of Land Management is in discussions with the family of Dwight and Steven Hammond to restore the family’s grazing access to federal lands.

It’s unclear how far along those talks are in producing an agreement, but Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Jody Weil said the talks have been underway since May 2015.

“Before the Hammonds were resentenced (for arson in October 2015), we started having conversations with the Hammonds,” said Weil. “We’re certainly talking to the Hammonds’ attorney still.”

Weil declined to comment on whether the negotiations have been impacted by the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

“It’s a legal process,” Weil said. “I can’t comment on that.”

Some might say that restoring the Hammonds’ graving rights before the Malheur occupation is ended would be udderly mad.

America, 2016:

Intelligent design should be taught alongside evolution

As students of science, do we have the facts to decide the origin of man for ourselves?

As a public school student I was taught the theory of evolution as if it were a fact supported by a process no one could possibly have observed. I remember cutting out an article from this very paper to show my teacher in science class in middle school. The article was about scientists finding two skeletons from different evolutionary levels (you know, the suitcase-carrying ape-to-man scale) at the same level of excavation, questioning the evolutionary model. The teacher never shared it with the class.

[…]

In science, “a ‘fact’ typically refers to an observation, measurement or other form of evidence that can be expected to occur the same way under similar circumstances,” according to the National Academy of Sciences website. Some people still call it the theory of evolution, but this is too generous.

Science is based on observation and since evolution has not been observed, I do not agree with the way that it is taught in schools around the world. Evolution is neither a fact, nor a theory. It is a belief.

Trump campaign announces ‘Iowa Caucus Finder’

Donald Trump’s campaign on Friday revealed an “Iowa Caucus Finder” to make sure supporters know where to vote on February 1, part of the GOP front-runner’s effort to make sure it has the turnout needed to win the first-in-the-nation voting state. […]

I still think Trump should offer free shuttle service for anyone wishing to do to a Republican caucus. He could rent every van in the state, hire drivers with the appropriate licenses, and go for it.

Speaking of evolution:

For a few Alaska fish, 1964 earthquake spurred rapid evolution

Species normally evolve gradually in a process that unfolds over thousands — sometimes millions — of years. But scientists say they have discovered an Alaska fish population that appears to have transformed in the last 50 years — a lightning-quick transformation, at least by evolutionary standards.

The changes happened after the 1964 earthquake, the most powerful ever recorded in the United States, rearranged terrain around Southcentral Alaska and abruptly changed the habitat of some of the region’s threespine stickleback, a small, widely distributed fish.

When the quake lifted parts of Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska by as much as several meters, it created freshwater ponds on several islands.

The stickleback that found themselves in those new ponds adapted rapidly when their habitat changed from saltwater to fresh, according to a new study by scientists from the University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Oregon and other institutions. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It really isn’t. A moth that already had a range of color from white to mottled black, in conditions that favored one, became much blacker, then much whiter when conditions changed again. But both characteristics already existed in the population and still do.

Evolution in action can be demonstrated — this isn’t it. (Natural selection, yes.)

We had a storm in Chicago…had to be 7 or 8 years ago that was so bad I had to shovel 4x in 24 hours. It took three hours to shovel my driveway the next day as I was mostly shoveling the drifts from the front door. Had I not shoveled the landing that many times I’d never have gotten out the front door the next day. As it was, after sleeping about 5 hours, there was a 5 foot drift against the door.

Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) is a 501(c)(4) non-profit which seems to be funded almost entirely by the Koch brothers donor network.[1] CVA advocates for reductions in federal spending and free market policies, focusing its campaigns on themes related to veterans.

Research at the Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, showed that 15% of female elephants and 9% of males in the park were born without tusks.
In 1930 the figure for both male and female elephants was only 1%.
Experts say the reason why some elephants are tuskless is a result of a chance genetic mutation.
They say elephants are losing their tusks as a rapid and effective evolutionary response to escape slaughter by ruthless and resourceful poachers who kill elephants for their ivory trophies.

re: #272 Snarknado!

Yup. But it’s not evolution — the distribution of traits changed, but nothing was added, removed or changed (as illustrated by the fact that the moths reverted to type when the coal dust went away).

Of course that’s evolution - a change in the genetic composition of a population over generations caused by selective pressure acting on genetic diversity. Evolution doesn’t imply something added in every case.

The genetic composition of the moth population changed, as the environment changed imposing a different selective pressure. That’s evolution.

I’ll just gently suggest that beyond the typo in the name, that you might want to find a different label. Hypocrite would be better.

The pharise movement of that era was highly educated in their religious beliefs and obligations. After the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, the pharises would be the basis of modern rabbinical Judaism. While they are denigrated in much of the new testament it is in the context of the fact that the writers were the ones booted out of the synagogues and tended all to often to an anger that is the basis of most modern antisemitism.

A better view exists in Matthew’s gospel where Jesus says to be even more holy than the already very holy pharises.

America, 2016:

Evolution is neither a fact, nor a theory. It is a belief.

One of things that seems to be missing in schools is the teaching of the basic principles of science.

I recall learning as early as the fourth or fifth grade about how one starts with a hypothesis, if the hypothesis can be objectively and independently confirmed by multiple observations (facts), then it becomes a theory.

I’m not sure that the label “Pharisees” applies in a discussion of evolution. IIRC the Pharisees emphasized the role of tradition in addition to the Scriptures in interpreting the law. While denying the reality of evolution is a long running thing with reactionaries, the acceptance or denial of evolution really doesn’t apply to interpreting the law of God.

Glenn Beck and the other GOPers say Trump is for big government.

That’s true, but are Beck or the other right wingers who attacked Trump in the NR piece this week actually for small government?

The answer is no. They’re not.

You can’t be for small government and then demand that a huge wall be built on the Southern border that is patrolled by security forces, plus deportation of millions of people who are here. You need a massive infrastructure to handle all that. It would make the DHS look like kid’s play.

Then you’ve got their position on abortion, where they are pushing government so small that it fits up in the lady bits - with government intruding into decisions made between a doctor and their patient (the polar opposite of small government).

These people aren’t about small government. They’re about government beholden to theocrats and religious beliefs that are antithetical to the 1A.

Cowboy: “Hey, cool dog. Mind if I speak to him?”
Farmer: “Dogs caint talk!”
Cowboy: “Hey dog, how’s it going?”
Dog: “Great, thanks for asking.”
(Farmer stares in stupefied amazement )
Cowboy: “How does your owner treat you?”
Dog: “Really well. He walks me twice a day, feeds me Alpo, and takes me to the lake once a week to play.”

Cowboy: “Mind if I talk to your horse?”
Farmer: “Horses caint talk!”
Cowboy: “Hey horse, how’s it going?”
Horse: “Cool.”
(Farmer falls off his chair)
Cowboy: “How’s your owner treat you?”
Horse: “Pretty good. He rides me regularly, brushes me down often, and keeps me in the barn to protect me from the elements.”

Cowboy: “Mind if I talk to your sheep?”

One term of Bernie with Elizabeth Warren to follow for two more. Fuckin’ progressive dynasty. Though looking that far ahead doesn’t make sense as anything can happen with any of these people. Warren could turn out to have a hobby of insider trading and stomping on baby seals.

A foursome of male golfers, all in their 40’s, discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Hooters because the waitresses were young, good looking, had big breasts and wore short-shorts.

Ten years later, at age 50, the golfing buddies once again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Hooters because the food and service was good, they had many televisions to watch the games on, and the beer selection was excellent.

Ten years later, at age 60, the foursome again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Hooters because there was plenty of parking, they could dine in peace, and it was good value for the money.

Ten years later, at age 70, they discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Hooters because the restaurant was wheelchair accessible and had a toilet for the disabled.

Ten years later, at age 80, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Hooters because they had never been there before.

Greets and saluts from the snowy wonderland that is the NYC metro area snowpocalypse.

Global warming denialists think that a winter storm somehow disproves climate change or global warming, when global warning can actually explain why storms like this are more powerful than usual (and may get more frequent). It’s basic science, but these folks don’t know or care about science.

We survived Bush. We’ll survive Trump.

Actually, Trump would be a lot like Reagan - he’d be conservative, sure…for the cameras. But he’d protect Obamacare (because it works and the numbers make sense and he’s a businessman). He’d invest in infrastructure (because he knows how investments work). He’d probably suck at international relations the same as Bush, but he’d actually be less boisterous about it after the first few months. And the GOP would be fucking livid as they watched the tea party embrace progressive policies wrapped in Tea Party rhetoric simply because white guy.

Is this a post of you admitting that if the election came down to Trump versus Clinton your distaste in Clinton would allow you to vote for Trump?

This is the basic difference between HRC supporters and the Sanders backers:

“One’s evaluation of incrementalism will hinge on underlying assumptions about human nature and what it is possible to achieve through politics. Utopians of both the right and the left reject its slow operation and apparent incoherence. More-pragmatic policy makers find incrementalism a realistic and practical way to pursue needed reforms gradually, through a pluralistic process of trial and error.”

Around 40 members of the neo-Nazi Svenska motståndsrörelsen have been detained by police at the Medborgarplatsen square in central Stockholm.

The group’s demonstration started at Karlaplan, not far from Broadcasting House, and police had roped off the area in front of Radio Sweden’s location.

One person has reportedly been taken to the hospital by ambulance.

“The demonstrators refused to follow police instructions,” Stockholm police spokesperson Eva Nilsson told the newspaper Aftonbladet. “Now they’ll be taken away, and we’ll see who is charged with a crime. Right now everything is calm.”

High oil prices are bad for Democrats.
Low oil prices are bad for Democrats.

Let’s just say oil is bad for Democrats and be done with it?

Wall Street reaction to oil prices is different than Main Street. High oil prices suggest high demand, so that’s a signal of economic strength in global marketplace. Except that oil producers are running a glut of oil, while demand is down in China and improved efficiencies means we can do more with less. Oil producing countries need to pump more oil to get same revenue, pushing a spiral down on prices. That benefits oil consumers (everyone else) since it costs less to make/transport/consume oil products or transportation. That’s money spent elsewhere in economy (the good for Main Street bit).

Where it’s bad? States with high reliance on oil products like Alaska, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas. They’re already running into economic distress due to glut.

But that’s what happens when a boom in oil goes bust.

While everyone was talking about Bernie’s ‘America’ spot yesterday, I was searching for this video. Bowie might have displaced Yes’ version as my favorite cover of this song.

I think the thing I loved most about Bowie’s voice was the way that working-class accent worked its way in, no matter what he was singing.

Obama compromised way too much, IMO. And he’s been a great President. What we need besides a Democrat in the WH, are more Democrats in Congress. Or less extremist/obstructionist Republicans.

If we were talking about Republicans of a decade ago, I wouldn’t worry if this country elected one. But we’re not. The Republican Party is too extreme now. They have every intention, and have already done so in WI, MI, IN, and OH (not to mention voting rights in the southern states), of winding back women’s rights and civil rights. And although the SC upheld the ACA and gay marriage, we have Citizens United and the chipping away of the Civil Right’s Act. So, for me, this election is even more important than 2008 because of all the good things Obama and Dems have done.

Good morning, Lizards. Hope everyone in the snowpocalypse is safe and warm.

Of course that’s evolution - a change in the genetic composition of a population over generations caused by selective pressure acting on genetic diversity. Evolution doesn’t imply something added in every case.

The genetic composition of the moth population changed, as the environment changed imposing a different selective pressure. That’s evolution.

I’m not arguing with you — your field, not mine — but) it seems to me that calling this evolution (the kind of “churn” that’s taking place everywhere, all the time) without qualifications muddles the issue. I’ve had the pleasure (she said, meaning the opposite) of hearing anti-evolutionists on the subject, and this would draw the response “You see?! Nothing has changed! You can’t add anything! I am an exceptional driver…but I am also smart enough to not go out in a massive well predicted and announced snow storm.

I almost got stuck on the highway just as it closed for three days due to a flash snow storm. Snow wasn’t even predicted that day but not only did it snow like mad but the squalls were insane.

The only reason I got off the highway was that the truckers were driving too fast for my comfort and I was worried they would hit me because it was snowing like mad and they were driving like it was a spring day. I hit the back-roads and what would normally have been a 30 minute drive back home took 2.5 hours…with cars being off the road every 100’. If I had stayed on the highway I would have been stuck…they didn’t get all the cars off for days.

That was a scary day. Lots of people died in that storm.

1. The “yoots” who haven’t voted in the past anyway (either too young before or unengaged) who have been swept up in the “movement” and
2. A small number of butthurt “olds” who claim they have waiting their whole lives for the Democratic Party to recognize that they are the base and they WILL NOT BE IGNORED. They’re the same ones who voted for Jill Stein in 2012 (0.36% of the popular vote) because Obama failed to give them a pony.

My name is Armand Wolf, and I am currently a senior in High school. Since a young age, I’ve had an interest in current affairs, politics, and activism. I have been very active in my extracurricular pursuits in high school, and I am currently in the midst of applying to college. These are my thoughts.

Out of Towners need not apply

Harney County Community Meeting Change in Venue and Format for January 25

Burns - Harney County Judge Steve Grasty announced a change in venue and format for the weekly Harney County community meeting scheduled for Monday, January 25. “We started the weekly community meeting so that Harney County residents would have an opportunity to ask questions and voice their concerns in a safe and civil manner,” said Judge Grasty. “The meeting last week did not fulfill that purpose.” Harney County has been notified by the school district that school facilities will no longer be available for these community meetings due to the number of firearms that were present, in violation of school district policy.

The meeting on January 25 will be held at the Harney County Senior Center at 5:00 p.m. Doors will open at 4:30. The Senior Center also has a “no firearm” policy that will be strictly enforced. Please arrive early in order to get through security in a timely manner.

The format for this meeting will also be special. “Residents of Harney County have been given a unique opportunity to be heard statewide,” said Judge Grasty, explaining that Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Think Out Loud public affairs program will moderate and record the meeting on Monday. The host of Think Out Loud, Dave Miller, will ask questions of those in attendance. This episode of Think Out Loud will air on Tuesday, January 26. “I can’t think of a better way to give Oregon a taste of the real Harney County,” continued Grasty.

Due to space limitations at the Senior Center and the unique format, entrance to this meeting will be limited only to those Harney County residents who have a ticket. Tickets will be available starting at 10 a.m. Monday morning. Here is what you need to know:
• Pick up tickets at the Harney County Courthouse, Clerk’s Office, on Monday starting at 10 a.m. or by calling XXX-XXX-XXXX starting at 10 a.m.
• Tickets will be released on a first-come, first-served basis.
• Everyone who gets a ticket will need to show picture I.D. and residency will be verified.
• Picture I.D. will also be required to enter the Senior Center with your ticket.
• Each person may pick up only two tickets.
• There will be 150 tickets available. Thirty tickets have been set aside for invited guests. Any of those tickets that are unused will be available for others to use.
• Anyone who is not able to get a ticket for this meeting, will be wait-listed for this meeting and put at the front of the list for future meetings, should it be necessary to continue with this ticketing format.

OK, I read his whole thing now and all I can say is that the kid is not only naive, but totally illogical.

Three times he says “Trump will destroy the country” (once, unequivocally!) But hey, no biggie, right? And
Hillary Clinton pry’s on the ambiguous voter (WTF does that even mean?)
and then his conclusion:
And in four years, when Bernie Sanders runs again, he will win. Then, the United States will truly see progress and change and Hillary Clinton will feel the Bern!

Hey, you’re a nice kid, but get off my lawn! (And study up on some grammar.)

My response…

“It is no secret that Donald Trump will destroy this country.” So I will vote for him! If this is what schools are turning out as logical thought we are, indeed, doomed.

In four years, Bernie will be 78 years old. On top of your failure in logical thought, you may want to consider actuarial tables on human longevity and the level of stress put on an American president.

Good for you for giving it thought. Not so good on you for completely failing any kind of logical thought.

You’ve proved Creationism!!11y” Ad endless nauseam…

What Creationists think doesn’t change reality. And by drawing a line dividing what Creationists can’t deny from what they don’t want to believe, you provide them with a safe have for denial - “I believe in Microevolution, but not Macroevolution!’ But there’s really no division there. I’ve had good results by working from what they HAVE TO accept towards what they WON’T, because what it does is to expose how indefensible their position is.

WRT ‘you can’t add anything’, bullshit! Our genomes are chock full of evidence of adding new stuff. Duplication and divergence. The proteins that make up our cells and do the work are comprised of a rearrangements and revisions of a relatively small number of domain types, reused and revised by mutation and selection.

New Mexico State Police say an officer was at the Phillips 66 truck stop in Lemitar, NM where he observed a man subject, in possession of a stolen vehicle.

According to NMSP, the officer detained Paul Richard Foster (35) of Washington State in the rear seat of his patrol vehicle and began an investigation into the stolen vehicle. During the course of time Foster was detained he escaped from the rear seat, entered the driver’s seat, unlawfully stole the police vehicle, and fled

Unlawfully stole the police vehicle, none of that legal theft of police vehicles here.

The pursuit ended when Foster crashed the cruiser into a drainage canal.

[…]

At the time of Foster’s capture, officers learned he was a fugitive from justice out of the state of California and had an outstanding felony warrant for burglary charges and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He also had an outstanding felony warrant out of the state of Washington.

Foster is being charged with aggravated assault with deadly weapon upon a peace officer, aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, felon in possession of a firearm, tampering with evidence, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle (NMSP CVE unit), possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and possession of stolen property over $2500 (two firearms).

NMSP say Foster has at least one prior felony conviction out of Washington as a felon in possession of a firearm.

The funny thing is that it doesn’t in any way explain what it means to be a Russian patriot. There’s nothing in his views that are uniquely Russian. It’s just your average batshit bigoted bell-end on the internet, and for that, you don’t need to be Russian, never mind patriotic. You just need to be idiotic, which is a value independent of any nation.

It’s always good to find in humans what joins them rather than divides.

Hmm. I’m thinking all worldly political negotiations should open with the understanding that everyone gathered agree that at the base of these negotiations is the acceptance that we can all be idiots. Understanding that…let us all try to use these talks to shoot a little higher.

Of course, what actually happens in a republic is that the people agree on rules to elect representatives who wield the power of the people as a group. Then they agree on how to steal your bike.

I’m experiencing “project creep.” We had new garage doors put in (overhead replacing slide-by), so I trimmed out the sides where they had to put a couple 2x4s to attach the new tracks, and primed the wood. While doing this I noticed how bad the paint was on one side of the pre-existing molding (sun really blasts it during the summer and it hasn’t been properly scraped and redone in a few years.) So now I’ll have to fix that too. When we aren’t getting rain showers like today, but soon.

I hate really noticing that sort of thing, as opposed to being vaguely aware of it ‘cause then it has to go on the to-do list.

It should also be remembered that Obama won the 2008 primaries on the final day, with his win in Montana. Any strategy that starts with Obama’s coalition and subtracts any significant number of people ends in inevitable defeat.

Me, I think Hillary will make it easy by winning IA by double digits, then the bump from that wins NH for her, and after that, the rest is silence.

Just heard this while listening to ESPN radio in my kitchen doing some cleaning of pots and pans.

ESPN - Duquesne basketball, Temple gymnastics teams stuck in blizzard

The Duquesne men’s basketball team and the Temple women’s gymastics team are still looking to get home after being stranded in traffic on the Pennsylvania Turnpike overnight because of the blizzard affecting the eastern United States.

The Dukes were traveling home to Pittsburgh from Fairfax, Virginia, after their 86-75 victory against George Mason on Friday. The team, which departed Fairfax at 4:30 p.m., is stuck on a stretch between Bedford and Somerset, Pennsylvania.

Duquesne coach Jim Ferry, who won his 300th game Friday, told SportsCenter on Saturday morning that the bus is about 80 miles from Pittsburgh and that “everybody is safe” and “we’re going to be OK.”

Temple gymnastics coach Umme Salim-Beasley said the Owls’ bus, which left Philadelphia at about 2 p.m. Friday, is also stuck on the PA Turnpike about 80 miles from Pittsburgh.

Ferry told SportsCenter on Saturday morning that the bus came to a stop at about 9:15 p.m. ET.

“It’s been a heck of an experience,” he said. “We were making good time, kept track of the storm and we’re doing well. Then about 9:15 last night, it was a dead stop and we haven’t moved since.”

Yak Shaving is the last step of a series of steps that occurs when you find something you need to do. “I want to wax the car today.”
“Oops, the hose is still broken from the winter. I’ll need to buy a new one at Home Depot.”
“But Home Depot is on the other side of the Tappan Zee bridge and getting there without my EZPass is miserable because of the tolls.”
“But, wait! I could borrow my neighbor’s EZPass…”
“Bob won’t lend me his EZPass until I return the mooshi pillow my son borrowed, though.”
“And we haven’t returned it because some of the stuffing fell out and we need to get some yak hair to restuff it.”
And the next thing you know, you’re at the zoo, shaving a yak, all so you can wax your car.

NW Iowa, where Trump is at right now, is a land with many fundamentalist protestants - reformed type - and that is where Vander Plaats is based and where Cruz probably has lots of support. Trump didn’t speak too much about traditional fundamentalist issues, but played the “confirmation” card (in his Presbyterian church) and the “Merry Christmas” card. I think the fundamentalists aren’t so impressed with those.

Trump even complained about rich WS traders not paying enough taxes, about Amazon using WaPo as a lobbying arm to keep down taxes, etc.

Clearly Trump isn’t running as a no-tax, no-abortion Republican. If so he would have done it in front of this crowd.

Trumps message to NW Iowa was this: you keep losing Presidential elections because you keep picking losers. Pick me because I am a winner.

Republican rules and Democratic rules are different for these caucuses and even for some of the primaries.

Trump mentioned that at first he was angry about the RNC’s machinations, but then realized they would work in his favor in the end. And the winner-take-all approach in Florida will probably help Trump tremendously. And the guaranteed proportionality in the Iowa caucuses will not work against Trump.

On the Democratic side, though, the rules are probably going to work hard against Bernie, as they apportionment of delegates to the Democratic national convention appear to be more under the control of the inner power structure.

Cloudy and about 25F in Pella for Trump’s arrival. Probably easy travel weather.

Looking at the extended forecast, it looks like parts of Iowa will be unseasonably warm the day of the caucus. Pleasant weather could lead to record turnout. Probably will help Trump.

Send in some shields from pick a city, any city, and tell them that Ammo Bundy and his posse stole some cigarillos, soda pop, and ran away and are holding toy guns and won’t listen to anyone. Then you’ll get some movement.

Back to work.

Wunderground predicting snow for 1 Feb in Iowa, for example in Pella, where Trump is today:

wunderground.com

NWS is saying the storm track should stay north of Iowa…

Weather is too variable this far out to predict. I still think that in bad weather conditions that only the true believers will turn out.

For 1 Feb, Wunderground has snow in Iowa from Sioux City (on the Missouri river) to Clinton (on the Mississippi river.) So if it is snowing statewide, I wonder how that will affect turnout.

Donald Trump says he could shoot people on 5th Avenue, and not lose votes.

I don’t think he’s wrong - and for any of the reasons (because those he shoots aren’t going to vote for him anyways, and those who he’s pandering to don’t mind that either).

If anything, Trump seems to take a page out of History of the World:

Drifting to the Left! (History of the World Part 1)

And I guess he’s over that New York values thing too.

They’re college students. Do you really believe college students would be playing Uno and watching Disney movies? That’s for their parents to see. They’re probably doing shots and watching dirty movies. Notice nobody said anything about studying.

It is a nice spud.
