To witness a life let loose

This video’s a few years old now, but I’m just catching up on Becca Stevens’ excellent music after discovering her through this Snarky Puppy video, and this song is amazing. This ain’t pop music, folks; Becca likes sophisticated, unexpected chord progressions and cadences, which makes her my kind of musician.

Weightless
Lyrics & music by Becca Stevens

There’s nothing like witnessing the moment
that a life lets loose and falls to the ground.
Weak autumn winds tip them,
easy,
like a wish upon weightless dandelion seeds.
Each life beaming at its brightest now,
falling.
The road rises up to greet
and is painted for the day,
sacred,
To witness a life let loose,
and be grateful for this gift.

I know this is hard but by holding on you only make it harder,
so let go,
embrace what you are.
Hold other hearts only to the truth of what they are,
sacred,
expect nothing more.

‘Cause there’s only now,
change all your thoughts from loneliness to solitude,
sacred,
the space that you’ve found.
Keep holding your ground even through the shadows all around,
quiet,
and don’t make a sound.

Cause there’s nothing like witnessing the moment
that a life lets loose and falls to the ground.
Weak autumn winds tip them,
easy,
like a wish upon weightless dandelion seeds.
Each life beaming at its brightest now,
falling.
The road rises up to greet
and is painted for the day,
sacred,
To witness a life let loose,
and be grateful for this gift.

Super easy to predict a Trump speech at this point. He’ll boast about his polls, boast about how great he’s going to be as president, bash the camera operators for not following his orders, rant about Sgt. Bergdahl and Ted Cruz and Hillary and Jeb, boast about how blacks and Hispanics love him so much and then say something appallingly racist about them, boast about his beautiful wall and making Mexico pay for it, then leave.

Did I miss anything?

I wonder if he’ll get bored. His comment about shooting people on 5th Ave is absolutely spot-on.

Porn Stars ‘Feel the Bern’

The porn industry is turned off by thought of a Republican president.

[…]

“I’m voting for Bernie; I don’t want a corporate candidate,” Karla Kush, a young, blond porn star told The Daily Beast. She admires Sanders’s “revolutionary stance” on the issues, and decries how “royal family” Hillary Clinton is “in bed with” the big banks.

“Let me tell you a story. About how I’m going to make America great again. I’ll do it myself, OK? I will. I’ve proven it, again and again, and my… The people who don’t like me, they just can’t stand it. And this guy comes up to me, this illegal, probably, I don’t know… Some sissy looking guy, you know with little girly glasses and… Probably some liberal you know, like some guy Obama gives free college too. He comes up to me and he starts talking about how I’m bad and this and that and the other thing. And you know, Trump shot him. Trump shot him right in his stupid face! Because that’s the kind of strong leader I am.”

*protester shouts*
*Trump shoots the protester*

“Oh, hah! That’s going to leave a mark! Guys, don’t let him… Hey don’t let him bleed on the carpet, it’s probably expensive carpet… OK, good… He’s out of here. You see? That’s how you deal with these people… I’m going to make America great so we won’t be afraid anymore.”

Virginia Governor addresses storm response, asks drivers to stay home
By Mark Tenia Published: January 23, 2016, 1:49 pm Updated: January 23, 2016, 3:56 pm
(PSA) Excerpt:

But officials stress that while they’re expecting the storm to move out by midnight, it will be just as important for people to stay off the roads tomorrow, possibly even Monday, as they get everything cleaned up.

“This is the critical part. I’m just cautioning everybody tomorrow could be sunny it’s going to be a lot of snow and people are going to feel i gotta get outside. We’re fine with you going outside, but just don’t go out in your car,” McAuliffe said.

Watching twitter and all the punditry, good and bad but mostly bad, it all seems like people are a bit slow.

Watched this morning’s speech, live blogged it here. Yes, Trump did throw out that line about shooting someone on a street in NY. But his point was how poorly his opponents are at being able to garner support, versus his ability to attract support. Trump wasn’t bragging about shooting somebody, but about how inept his Republican opponents are at being able to get any traction despite the millions of dollars they spend on advertisements.

I am no Trump supporter, but I can see why candidates complain when something is taken out of context.

The real scary thing about Trump’s speech this morning, and only a few people on twitter have picked up on it, is how he positioned Christianity as the true power in this country.

Trump clearly was trying to get the identity of “Christian” as the political equivalent of being an “American” - that is, the true American are you Christians here in Iowa.

Now he was playing a very religious Reformed venue, but still, this is the real problem with Republican politics today - the ideation of America as a the last Christian stronghold on a planet ruled by Satan.

Still an obnoxious example, particularly in the current environment, with people being shot in the street for real. He could have used “eat a live kitten” and gotten the same point across (and opened the way for his new idiot surrogate to screech “AND OBAMA ATE A DOG!!!”)

Alternately, he knows it’s a win-win with his audience.

The message, abstracted from the Twitter stream, is on target with Trump’s narrative. And some people will notice the nature of the poster and agree.

The people that get upset…it shows they’re weak and Trump is strong because he can make them upset.

(No, seriously. You cannot go wrong looking at this campaign in terms of middle school bullying technique).

Yes, it was trashy as a comment, given all the gun deaths in America.

Still, Trump didn’t say he wanted to shoot someone in the street, just that his opponents’ support are so week that their support leaves them easily, and his does not.

Anyway, another scary thing about Trump is his continual reciting of how Russia isn’t so bad after all. He does have a bit of a man crush on Putin, I think.

Not to pile on the scariness, but consider that “Christianity” in the politicized US context is basically an empty vessel into which trends and notions are thrown willy-nilly. US social conservatism have purpose-built a religion that justifies their selfishness, their anger, and their bellicosity.

This is why Trump might get “evangelicals.” Ultimately, being angry greedy turds that like bullying is their religion…and they’ve re-interpreted the Bible to make that fit. Hell, that is exactly what David Barton does, give or take a bit of polishing of proof-texts. This is a religious bloc whose only axiom is “we are the Elect, in this world and the next”—everything else is negotiable.

Cruz’s connection to this world is that he knows the culture and the language, but Trump, in his raw manner, is providing exactly the same zero-sum validation they seek from established wielders of the medium… megachurch pastors, television “prophets.”
