Iraq.
Wall Street.
- ok, that’s nice, but I’m having a hard time really grasping how Sanders will be different than Clinton as POTUS, vice as a Senator.
They’re different jobs and I suspect that Hillary will emphasize that.
Judgment is important, Bernie, and there’s a reason that virtually no one in Congress has endorsed you; they do not trust your judgment.
A week to go until the Iowa caucuses and Rand is watching a Democratic Town Hall?

— Dr. Rand Paul (@RandPaul) January 26, 2016
Shouldn’t he be busy asking everybody for $3 or actually trying to go and get GOPers to caucus for him?
Bernie’s entire schtick is plenty of nice sounding ideas, but absolutely no plan for making them happen or how to deal with the negative consequences. He does not strike me as a guy who’s going to be able to go to Congress and convince them that any of his ideas have merit.

You’re right. All of it is laudable, but I just doing see it being doable at the moment, with the GOP in such a scary place. It is like Bernie is the president you want after the next one, but the next one is the one you need right now.
I even think the mainstream GOP (and they do exist, I’m sure) want Clinton to cream the wingnuts for them. Lance the boil for them because they can’t do it themselves.

I think Sanders entered the race to drive the narrative about Wall Street and was totally caught off guard that he is doing as well as he is. Ask him a foreign policy question and after he tells you he voted against the Iraq war his face goes blank.

Right now, they’re airing millions of dollars in ads jocking Sanders and smearing Hillary. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but if you’re right then they really do not have a good sense of the necessary order of operations.

I’m watching Rachel instead of CNN because I seem to be allergic to CNN.
Here’s what I want to know, though, from Bernie and his supporters. What’s your plan for downticket? Bernie’s not a Democrat. He’s run against Democrats for much of his career. Is he going to be going all over the country campaigning for the Democratic House and Senate candidates he’ll need if he has any hope of getting anything through Congress? What about the state legislators he’ll need if his second term is going to benefit from a less-gerrymandered Congress?

In the fourth quarter, Hillary raised $18 million for the DNC. Bernie? Zip. (And this was on top of outraising Bernie for her own campaign.)
re: #18 ipsos
The Democrats need to switch 10 seats in the Senate this year in order to keep the next 6 years from falling into the hands of the GOP wingnuts, regardless of who is President.

Winning ten Senate seats this year would require the Democrats to start winning seats like Indiana or Alaska or Missouri. Want a probability assessment on how a socialist candidate will play in those states?

True, but this is primary season. They are hoping/expecting for kasich, Rubio or JEB)+&£@& to get in. If Cruz or Trump win all bets are off.

Well, I suppose we can say the same for Hillary.
Perhaps we’ll just have to rely on the GOP shooting themselves in the foot and nominate someone so crazy that people won’t vote Republican.
At least Sanders got out of there without referring to his polls. I think he’s been told that makes him sound more Trumpisch than he wants to.

There may be a couple of House seats in play around here this time. But that is about all 2016 will mean as for national politics wrt California.
I am really hoping that Sanders does finish well - if not in ultimately winning the nomination. He has been rather successful in moving the party’s discussion a few notches back to the political left, and done so in a “I don’t sound like I’m completely nuts” kind of way - this is something that has been DESPERATELY needed for the past decade or so.
Gah, even more bullshit gas/oil propaganda ads than candidates. I guess they’re not quite as annoying as Rubio and Cruz ads, but…

I heard about that. That really disappoints me. Doesn’t Bernie want to have strong Democrats to help push through his agenda in Congress? The more I’m seeing from him, the more I’m disappointed and the more I’m frustrated that his diehards just see Clinton as a centrist trying to prevent their wild dreams from coming true.
I hate to break it to Bernie supporters but the House is gerrymandered shut for the Democrats until 2022. If Bernie gets elected the Republicans in the House will not pass any of his proposals. You’ll see the crazies in the GOP run wild in the House with investigations about everything Bernie does.

re: #46 Joe Bacon
Yup. The real action is in trying to regain control of the Senate. That is possible in 2016. But the Dems need more than 50 total, they need a buffer of a couple of seats.
re: #44 freetoken

I know you’re being facetious, but neither party has a consistent edge in the small states. For every Alaska, Wyoming, and Idaho, there’s a Delaware, Rhode Island, and Hawaii.
Martin suffers from not owning an issue. He needed to do that a couple of years ago, so people could identify with him in some manner.

The GOP is very vulnerable in the Senate since this is the first Teabagger wave that’s coming up for re-election. Plenty of seats in swing states are going to be hard fought and I believe that’s where Hillary has an advantage. Once the Democrats get control back, they should kill the filibuster and judicial blue slips.

That’s what I’m hoping for. I can easily see PA’s seat going back to the Dems. Hell I wouldn’t be too shocked if Rand Paul got his unemployment notice. It’s all IMO about finding the right candidates and right tone.

Ironically, their vulnerability isn’t that great because they left money on the table with O’Donnell in Delaware, Angle in Nevada, and Buck in Colorado.

I’ll agree. But I still tend to agree with Sanders over most of the answers. I’m just not convinced that America would ever go that far. I’m really scared of his nomination because I have deep doubts that he can win, though I wish we had a real fighter like him in the White House. I won’t dig myself in deeper by unfairly equating Hillary with her husband in her positions now. That’s not entirely fair. I’ll continue to give her a fair listen.

That’s not a dick move, unfortunately; that just might decide the winner if the more Sanders-friendly polls are accurate. Another argument to just get rid of caucuses.
O’Malley also was one of the first governors to support same sex marriage so I like him for that as well. I think he should be considered for a cabinet post but as I said not for VP.
O’Malley did well (except for that arm gesture of “lifting up” at the end).

I am glad Webb is gone. I voted for him twice- primary and GE but he’s really soured on me since he’s left the Senate. I’ve told you guys before but he quit the Senate on the pretense of being bored by politics which is fine although it really forced the VA Democratic Party to nominate Tim Kaine who I imagine they would have loved to return to the governor’s mansion- we have a one term limit on governors but governors can return. It worked out since Kaine’s great in the Senate too but it was just selfish of Jim. Plus I think he’s an apologist for socially conservative Democrats who vote GOP out of spite. And I’m not just talking about merely guns but also things like the CSA flag. Plus the stories I’ve heard from Lizards here about how he was as Reagan’s Naval Secretary. Sheesh.

New Hampshire: 4
Iowa had 13 electoral votes from 1884 to 1928.

Weird how much emphasis there is on Iowa in our presidential elections, when historically the Iowa results have almost no connection to the general election results. It’s like a ritual that we keep following even though it lost any meaning or real-world relevance long, long ago.

There’s a part of me that really wants there to be just a national primary and that will be that but the two parties would never go for it and the two states too.

Vox addressed that in a piece today.
If someone is going to POTUS they need to win their nomination in at least one of (Iowa,NH ). Only once has a President in modern times won the general election and not won their party in one of IA or NH.
Good answer Hillary! (First real applause—and a tough question about why kids don’t like her)

I was hoping for a more direct answer, such as a more direct reference to the biases of the media and the massive attacks against her for the last 25 years for being… well, just being, but that is a very good answer.

It’ll come down to beating incumbents in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. States with fairly old populations, fairly high shares of white people, and slow demographic change. These are states where I think Sanders will do particularly poorly because of socialism’s stigma.

re: #112 HappyWarrior

I read a great suggestion a few years ago; split the states into regions, North — South — Midwest — West, and the first primary for each region should be the state that had the closest result last election. A couple weeks later, the state for each region that was 2nd closest. Then have free-for-alls where every state can set whatever dates they feel like after that.

I dunno. I think Clinton could possibly resonate with them. My grandparents were never big Obama supporters. Grandma came around on Obama. Grandpa died before Obama even became president so I don’t know if he would have or not but Clinton in the 2008 primaries always did better with blue collar whites. Some of these were Reagan Democrats but others like my Grandparents had never voted Republican hardly ever. I think Clinton would be wise to point out Trump’s management practices to blue collar types if he’s the nominee. They need to know he’s a greedy dick who olny cares about himself.

I dunno. I just see the GOP as having to overcome a lot to win. Even with Bush who was a lot more reasonable and a lot more inclusive than the current GOP. He still won 2000 only by one state and that was fishy and 2004 was by one state too. I don’t think Clinton wins by Obama margins but I wouldn’t be shocked if she beats the GOP nominee by 5 states easily. I think a lot of women will be excited to vote for the first woman nominee for president the way a lot of African Americans were for Obama. Plus Trump and the GOP have done a lot ot piss off Latino voters. My sister in law’s sister and her husband are very very vocal against Trump and the GOP natvisism.

Didn’t it go for Dukakis in ‘88? What’s so interesting is how Republican West Virginia has become. Clinton won it both times but you saw the signs of change coming when Bush beat Gore there in 2000. See, that’s the thing. The Republicans gains are in areas like WV where the said demographic is declining like older whites. The Dems seem to be growing along with the coutnry’s growth. IMO the GOP is really going to regret treating minority voters like shit.
Hillary has to be harder.
Here is what I would say if I were in her place: “The Republicans are dragging the corpses of their fellow Americans around to exploit their death and sacrifice. Shame on the Republicans”.

Laura was a nothing. Hillary was a something. Laura did nothing on which one could base an opinion. Hillary tried to revamp the healthcare system. It’s actually interesting about that. The older blue collar guys in my family were never too fond of Bill, they did not like NAFTA and free trade but I thikn they liked him more than Mondale or Dukakis easily.

Only if people are allowed to vote.

Brought to you by the same GOP who wants to make buying a gun like buying a Reese’s peanut butter cup. Fuckers and their contempt for people exercising their franchise. What’s the matter Republicans? Afraid if people vote, you’ll get your sorry asses thrown out. This shit is disgraceful.
re: #258 freetoken
Oh yes, the older Democrats do. That’s why I have no doubt about who’ll be the nominee.
I’m one of those older people that hated the way the GOP treated him and will never forget it. I see them trying to do the same thing to Hillary now.

re: #234 freetoken
As someone who used to check the DrudgeReport when it started, I feel that the anti-Hillary campaign has yet to start.
The hatred for Hillary is still lurking there but the Republicans have yet to had to exploit it.
Trump swatted down Bill when DWS threatened to unleash him as the secret weapon.
Just wait.
I don’t think I’ll wait. I’ve seen almost 30 years of Clinton attacks. What will be new to see?
No, I’m going to count on people seeing through some of the bullshit. Sure there are those that won’t. I happen to think there are more that see all this a bit more clearly than what all this crap on the internet and all the talking heads say it is. I trust people will see Trump for what he really is. I trust that people will see Cruz as the slick liar he is.
I trust there are people that will say…”I don’t know, Clinton has all that baggage, but she has been around and in it all and in the political wars. But Trump, no way I can vote for that hateful arrogant man…and Cruz sends shivers down my spine.”
Bill brought a lot of working class Democrats back to the party. We were never a Reagan Democrat family thankfully- my grandpa in fact always joked that Reagan was a shitty actor in his opinion(never seen any of Ronnie’s movies but I’ll take his word for it heh) but I think the older people on my mom’s side were happy with what they saw out of Clinton. I guess they related to him more than Mondale or Dukakis which is kinda interesting given both Mondale and Dukakis were from their generation and like them the children of immigrants.
re: #266 Blind Frog Belly White
I’m going to get a lot of exercise from this clip for the next while, I can tell.
At GOP debates/forums, the candidates spend much of the time attacking Obama and threatening war. Dem events are so different. #DemTownHall

And, at least here in South by dog Carolina, the Clinton team workers are not only campaining hard for Hillary, but are really pushing to GOTV—working to help people get the info they need for absentee ballots/absentee in-person voting etc.
I know it’s a struggle and totally digusting, but we have to do whatever we can to get as many people registered and IDed and to the polls as we can (Right, Decatur Deb??)
re: #270 klys (maker of Silmarils)
“Gir! Why is there bacon in the soap?”
“I MADE IT MYSELF! HEHEHEHEHEHE!”
Yes, the Democratic debates/forums are kinder, gentler.
More feminine.
But when UFC or the NFL want to put asses in seats, they don’t do that.
Rather, conflict is emphasized.
Because that raises emotions.
And people act on emotions.

Words can’t describe how much I detest Roberts for acting like it was absurd to act like racism was still a problem in the deep South. I even have resotrted to calling hi ma doughface the same word used for slavery sympathizing pre-civil war Dems like Pierce and Buchanan.

So MSNBC is not carrying this either?!
Solely owned by CNN. This is our media.

Yeah, Russ. I’ve always been a huge fan. I remember talking to a good friend of mine in the September leading up to the election Russ was booted for Johnson.
The Wisconsin Dems wrote him off early. It blew my mind at the time. Pretty sure he’s still a bit sore about that.

I have enormous respect for Bernie Sanders. Too many of his supporters disrespect him with their behavior on social media

He’s always been my pretend boyfriend! Love love love him. Not only did the Wisconsin Dems write him off, but the national Dems didn’t do much of anything for him. I never gave a dime to the DNC after that. Did contribute to Russ’s campaign directly and will again.

Though I admit…I tend to be optimistic.

Surprised?
The comment filter is messing up the link, here’s a valid one:

I took one of my co-workers telemark skiing today, it was his first time. He took to it pretty quickly and realized at the end of the day that he was going to put together a rig. He has boots now, given to him by my tuning colleague. He needs to find skis (we’re close on that, and the price is right [free]) and bindings.
In one afternoon I completely changed the way this fellow approaches the sport of skiing.

Pressure building up. I think the best thing to do is let it out in little creative ways.

The Democratic Party is very representative of America as a whole. The GOP otoh have tokens who try to sound as wingnutty as their white counterparts to get the base to overlook their race.

Need to pick out the next one to do.

Trump would have had her thrown out.
If she would have been let in the first place. They yes.
TX Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick still hasn’t tweeted anything about the Daleiden indictment after he pushed for PP to be investigated by a grand jury.

Yeah I’d be shocked if she would have been too. This is a party audience that boos gay service members. The minute she said she was an AF vet, they would have booed her or accused her of lying.

Those folks aren’t going to vote for her if Jesus came back just to ask them too. IMHO the GOP has unloosed on her way too early, what new are they going to bring up?
Nobody except their base cares anymore, Whitewater, Benghazi, emails zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…
re: #161 Belafon
Considering how badly she has been running the congressional races, I think she still should lose the chair.

Considering how many Muslims have treated Sikhs in the past, that is an amazing statement of solitary.

Heh I was just teasing. But still. Kids born from 1998 graduating high school this year just feels surreal as fuck.
It gets worse, y’know. My kid was born in 1998, so this will be his first vote. (And I’ve drummed it into his head, he’d better be out there EVERY election…)

I’m 33. The first election I voted in was 2000 in Colorado. I voted for Ralph Nader and I voted Yay on Colorado Amendment 20, which legalized medicinal cannabis. A 20 passed that year, and I knew then and there that elections matter.
46 Amendments later, and cannabis is fully and verily legal for all purposes within the borders of Colorado.
Vote Quimby!
B-But almost all of the millennials are for Bernie! And why not aspire higher?
Bernie’s strategy has as much chance of winning as Eugene Debs or Norman Thomas, the other socialists who ran for president. When we inaugurate President Trump, will the moal satisfaction of TRYING be enough?
