FBI Statement on Oregon Occupation: Response Was ‘Deliberate and Measured’

“The armed occupiers were given ample opportunities to leave peacefully”

Via OregonLive.com, this is the full statement released today by the FBI about the operation against the Bundy gang.

Good morning. My name is Greg Bretzing, and I am the Special Agent in Charge for the FBI in Oregon.

For the past month, the FBI — along with our partners at the Harney County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and the many other federal and local agencies — have had a very deliberate and measured response. We worked diligently to bring the situation at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to a peaceful end. Some of those actions were seen, some unseen. But, because this is an on-going investigation with some armed individuals illegally remaining in the refuge, we cannot get into details as to every action tried or taken.

I will say that the armed occupiers were given ample opportunities to leave peacefully. They were given the opportunity to negotiate. As outsiders to Oregon, they were given the opportunity to return to their homes and have their grievances heard through legal and appropriate means. They chose, instead, to threaten the very America they profess to love with violence, intimidation and criminal acts.

Yesterday, the FBI and our partners took the necessary actions to start bringing this situation to an end. We worked to ensure that we could do so in the safest way possible — removing the threat of danger from innocent citizens. We continue to work to empty the refuge of the armed occupiers in the safest way possible.

Eight people were arrested, and one man died yesterday as we attempted to take him into custody. Because there is an on-going investigation by the Deschutes County Major Crimes Team on behalf of OSP related to this piece of the investigation, I will not be able to comment on the specifics.

I would, however, ask for your patience as the shooting investigation works its way through that outside process. At the appropriate time, the Medical Examiner’s office will release the decedent’s identity, and OSP will address the details of the event.

Let me be clear: It is fully and unequivocally the behavior and the choices made by the armed occupiers that have led us to where we are today. And, as the FBI and our partners have demonstrated, actions are not without consequences.

Containment road blocks are now in place around the Refuge. The disruption that the good people of Harney County have had to endure over the last few months will continue — for now.

If the people at the refuge want to leave, they can do so through the checkpoints where they will be identified. If they have questions or concerns, they can call the negotiators at the number that has been provided to them.

As I conclude I want to share my promise to the people who live and work here — who are raising their families here - that we will continue to look for safe, peaceful and productive ways to end this armed occupation. We recognize that the sooner we do that, the sooner the citizens of Harney County can start healing this community they cherish so much.

Thank you.

No kidding. Listen, it’s unfortunate and a shame that he died but what the fuck do they expect when they show up armed and making threats at law enforcement? It’s really rich how this guy is a martyr but somehow Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, and so many others were thugs that needed to die. Fucking right wingers and their total lack of consistency on any issue. I am not glad he’s dead but I am glad that these assholes are finally being arrested for this shit.

From the article I posted above:

A release decision will also have to be made. Sali said the United States Attorney’s Office wants Bundy and others to remain in custody. Attorneys will have to present evidence that shows the suspects are a flight risk or a danger to the community.

That should be easy enough.

Get a sympathetic judge like the Hammonds had and they’ll tell Bundy to go home under house arrest or some shit.

I still am iffy on whether justice will prevail…frontier mentality and all.

HappyWarrior  Jan 27, 2016 • 11:46:29am

I just love love how Eric Garner got what he had coming to him but somehow Finacum is a victim. Really, don’t tell me blue lives matter when you defend and make matrtyrs of people who actually make armed threats at LEO.

I know, just a formality, but am I a bad person for thinking about how funny it would be if the deader turns out not to be Finicum? Lavoy shows up alive and says, “What the hell is this? I just went for a snooze under my bullet proof tarp and woke up with everyone thinking I was dead.”

Sharp said that they began to realize that the police “meant business” and that Finicum, who was driving, yelled that he was going to continue driving so that he could “talk to the sheriff.”

That’s just totally fucking nuts. If the Police “mean business”, you don’t keep driving, hoping to find someone more sympathetic.

The Republican kingmakers, Steven Hotze and Terry Lowry, audition all of the Republican candidates for their “endorsement,” which comes with some purchased ad space in their “Slate” mailers. Any candidate who hopes to gain their favor must toe the party line if they want their endorsements. Sadly the endorsements of Hotze and Lowry do, in fact, make or break elections. I thought I knew the definition of the word “unseemly” until I watched how the Republican Machine works in Harris County.

Absolutely none of the Republican Party platform crap has any place in the criminal justice system. Zilch. The Law is what the Law is. Slimy kingmakers who don’t have law degrees have no business attempting to dictate it.

The reason I write this long-winded preamble is because today, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, under Republican D.A. Devon Anderson, showed that law matters more than party politics.

You could see attempts to infiltrate on the ground around the roadblocks or even sniper attacks on LE. I don’t think that will happen, but I didn’t think Oklahoma City would happen either.

It appears that a patriot group may have been behind the sniper attacks on electrical infrastructure in California last spring. We should assume that similar attacks could follow this event.

Yes downvoting 2 people based on me disagreeing with their previous comments in a topic means I’m a crank, a troll, and exploiting the downvote system. Anything else you both would like to make up new definitions for? I recently found this website and enjoy the topics and some commentators here. At the Trump rally in Myrtle Beach, where signs that read “silent majority” dotted the crowd, Patricia Saunders told CNN that Trump is speaking directly to a segment of the population that feels left behind and marginalized.

“White Americans founded this country,” said Saunders, 64. “We are being pushed aside because of the President’s administration and the media.”

Rhett Benhoff, a middle-aged white man at a December Trump campaign event in Raleigh, North Carolina, said discrimination against whites is “absolutely” real.

“I mean, it seems like we really go overboard to make sure all these other nationalities nowadays and colors have their fair shake of it, but no one’s looking out for the white guy anymore,” he said.

At another rally in Manassas, Virginia, on December 2, Robin Reif, 54, yelled into the crowd that the President was from Kenya. He told CNN afterward that Obama was “too much of a Muslim” and an “Islamist sympathizer.”

“In our Constitution, it says that the president has to be an American citizen,” Reif said. “I’m still wondering where is he really from. What is this man’s background?”

Paul Weber of Appleton, Iowa, describing himself as “kind of a redneck” at an October Trump rally in Waterloo, said he was tired of the so-called “new Americans” flooding the country.

“The people that are coming in here from China, Indonesia and all of them countries, they’re getting pregnant and coming here and having babies,” Weber said, telling an Asian reporter that he meant no offense. “They get everything and the people that were born here can’t get everything”.

Michael Savage on the radio calling the shooting a “cold blooded murder”.

I wonder who will be the first to step over the line into criminal advocacy for violence?

…and then get a visit from some stern-faced FBI agents, carrying zipties for him and the staff of the entire talk-radio show?

Depends on how much they really are in touch with reality, and whether they have a decent in-house counsel who does periodic trainings about the legal requirements to sustain a charge of “Incitement to violence”.

You smear yourself when you downvote posts that weren’t offensive, and you increase the belief that you’re a crank by almost never posting a comment. You could have been someone who rarely speaks, and accidentally downvoted on a tablet, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

This.

Most Lizards reserve downdinging for particularly offensive comments, not just “I don’t like you” or “I disagree with this attitude.” If you disagree, you post a comment and say why.

Also, lots of downdings from an account that rarely participates in the discussions, particularly on posts that otherwise are inoffensive as judged by the majority of the community: yeah, we’re going to notice that.

Even if you buy her version of events (which I don’t), Tarp Man’s last act was justified as “suicide by cop” in virtually every case of a black man “charging” the cops. Doesn’t matter if his hands were up or not, agents felt “threatened” and so he’s dead.

Bundy, militia in court: What to expect

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Ammon Bundy, along with 7 other people, will appear in fedearl court on Wednesday.

The FBI arrested Ammon Bundy, Ryan C. Bundy, Brian Cavalier, Shawna Cox, Ryan Waylen Payne, Joseph Donald O’Shaughnessy, Peter Santilli and Jon Eric Ritzheimer on probable cause, according to bureau spokesperson. Each has been charged with one felony charge of conspiracy to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation, or threats.

The United States Attorney’s Office could file additional charges at a later time, criminal defense attorney Kevin Sali said.

Ritzheimer was arrested in Arizona. His first court hearing has not been determined, but US Attorney Bill Williams said at a midday press briefing he would be brought to Oregon to face the charges.

snip

Sali, who is not representing any of the suspects, spoke to KOIN 6 News on Wednesday and said the first court appearances are usually very brief. He said the defendants will be brought before the judge, she will ask them their true name, they will be advised of the charges filed against them, and a date for a future hearing will be set.

“Nothing about today will be a determination of whether or not they are in fact guilty or not,” Sali said.

A release decision will also have to be made. Sali said the United States Attorney’s Office wants Bundy and others to remain in custody. Attorneys will have to present evidence that shows the suspects are a flight risk or a danger to the community.

The remaining Bundy nuts are worried that their plan for domination has been revealed? Seriously? Their plan should be how to surrender to authorities peacefully so that that bit of goodwill might temper the fact that they should be in prison for the rest of their lives for engaging in acts of terrorism, insurrection, and conspiracy to commit violence against federal law enforcement.

Everything else they say/do is noise.

Doesn’t getting a court-appointed attorney depend on being dead broke, though? Oxford did this? (sigh) Read that article.

“Why does the Oxford Dictionary of English portray women as ‘rabid feminists’ with mysterious ‘psyches’ speaking in ‘shrill voices’ who can’t do research or hold a PhD but can do ‘all the housework?’”

Oman-Reagan’s discoveries started with a dictionary search for the word “rabid,” for which the example phrase turned out to be “rabid feminist.” That led him to other terms with gendered definitions or examples, several of which he said hearkened back to arcane stereotypes about women.

To help readers understand “shrill,” the dictionary offers as an example “the rising shrill of women’s voices.” For nagging, it is “a nagging wife.” And for “promiscuous”: “she’s a wild, promiscuous, good-time girl.”

Meanwhile, male pronouns are used in explanations for the words “doctor” and “research.”

And then Oxford snark tweets about PC. I give up.

This whole incident has proven to be a textbook example of why the whole “Second Civil War” these nutters talk about will be over in a month. They had absolutely no advance planning that didn’t rely upon outside help arriving in an orderly manner, they totally failed to gain local support, there was no centralized command with an established chain of command to ensure things were getting done, and they allowed complacency to put them in a position where the Feds could capture/kill them with little worry that the cavalry would arrive in time to assist.

It seems that, while the FBI has indeed learned lessons from Waco and Ruby Ridge, these morons took exactly the wrong lesson away from Bundy Ranch, namely all you need to do is make a lot of noise about killing Feds and they’ll back off.

Speaking of which, the whole concept of being able to stream workouts is fantastic. Instead, I can pay a nominal fee monthly and stream it to my TV to do on my schedule, and I only had to invest in the equipment for it, which will not magically disappear after a year (about what a year of gym fees would have cost me).

O/T

Rod dreaming about “sacramental life” in merry olde Tudor England. Whoo boy…

Yesterday a reader recommended that I take a look at the 2013 BBC2 documentary/reality series Tudor Monastery Farm, episodes of which are available on YouTube. Last night I watched the first episode, embedded below, and it was really something else.

The show is part of an ongoing BBC series showing what farm life would have been like in various historical periods (Victorian, Edwardian, Wartime). In the Tudor version, a historian and two archeologists recreate what it was like to be a farmer under Henry VII, just before the English Reformation. Ruth Goodman, the historian, talks about what she learned from the experience:
********
Goodman is, and remains, an atheist. Funny thing is, watching that first episode made me, a Christian, feel an intense longing for the sacramentalism of the life those people had. Watch the episode linked above and see if you don’t agree with me. What I mean is the sense they had that God was everywhere, and that their lives had real substance because they were anchored in and ordered by the divine.

Good to know the rest of us have no substance in our lives, but hey now…don’t harsh his ontological fantasy world….

Look, if you’re planning to make a remark about how the Tudors didn’t live this way because the show doesn’t re-enact disease and misery, spare yourself the trouble. I won’t approve it. I think we are all grown-ups here, and I think we all know that life in rural England in 1500 wasn’t a hobby farm. That has nothing to do with my point in this post. Furthermore, if you are planning to make a remark about how modern dentistry, air conditioning, and nookie-without-issue, etc., proves that we have nothing whatsoever to learn from our ancestors, don’t bore me with that Whiggish nitwittery.

His sacramental fantasy is better than your historical reality, so there.

By the way…anybody here have the slightest idea what the holy fuck he is talking about?

I’m pretty sure Tudor era commoners where not in a “sacramental frame of mind” where God was best buds with them all day while they were trying to avoid the armed assholes from the manor and deal with sick livestock, sick kids and bad food.

I actually measure my cardio workouts in terms of hockey periods. I do 2 periods of hockey, 3 days a week. The range is between 65 and 90 minutes. Fortunately my team has been winning lately, which means I have a backlog of games to watch.

It would give him something creative to do and might make him an actual benefit to the human race.

re: #348 Targetpractice

So absurd to see them digging trenches today like they just realized trenches can be helpful defenses. They were there a month with their thumbs up their butts and just now thought to dig in. What incompetent morons.

Video

I remember actually seeing at the time it was broadcast, as “That’s Life” was a massively popular TV show back in the days when there was only 4 terrestrial channels in the UK, and the most popular shows would be watched by slightly over half the population of the UK at time of transmission, and the viewing figures for “That’s Life” were often not too far off that.

“That’s Life” was a kind of interesting show in the sense it was a kind of BBC1 approximation of tabloid newspapers in the UK at time: it alternated between humorous/salty stories that today might end up as Twitter trends (eg dogs that growl the word “sausages”; sleepy English villages that due to a mix up in the phone exchange get mixed up with a seaside town with nude beaches; wonky vegetables amusingly shaped like genitalia; etc) and sincere and earnest human interest stories like the one here.

Critics knocked it for being crass, and to be fair it was a bit unsubtle at times, but when it was good it was really good, like in this case. Compared to a lot of shows today, it seems positively sincere in it’s aims.

Or more likely, they were thinking stuff along the lines of
