Apocalypse Now was my intro to that song and it blew me completely away in the theater as a kid.

One of the best matches of film and music I have ever seen and heard.

I see a silver lining in this cloud: I do not believe that the majority of Americans are white supremacists and should Trump get the GOP nomination, he would not be able to get a majority of votes in the general election.

That was one of those “I remember exactly where I was” moments when I heard the news, working at the Athletic Department of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, had just come down the stairs from my upstairs office and the secretary informed me.

“We’re willing to leave,” Fry said. “Out of five people left here, four of us are allowed to leave and one of them, he’s charged with a felony.”

Fry said an FBI negotiator told them the fifth man has a warrant for his arrest for the federal charge of conspiracy to interfere with federal employees. Federal authorities have used that charge to arrest 11 occupiers in the past two days.

Fry identified the man as “Sean,” a possible reference to Sean Anderson, a militiaman from Idaho.

The charge stands in the way of a peaceful end to the occupation, now in its 27th day. The remaining occupiers are trapped at the refuge. Police have established roadblocks and checkpoints at several locations around the refuge headquarters, allowing no one in. Anyone leaving the refuge is stopped, identified and searched.

The man identified as Sean said on the video he has been to the refuge on four occasions for two to three days at a time, returning home between visits.

Fry said others with more involvement in the occupation have been allowed to leave the refuge without charges. He specifically cited one of the bodyguards for Ammon Bundy, a possible reference to Mark McConnell, who released his own video Wednesday describing his role as a driver for Bundy at the time of the highway stop that resulted in one death.

Sean shouldn’t be arrested, Fry said on the video.

“We’re asking them to just drop the charges,” Fry said. “And nobody dies.”

He said those remaining were willing to have their weapons checked by police as they leave to ensure they aren’t stolen.

“We’re being reasonable,” Fry said.

Without the charge being dropped, the remaining occupiers will stay at the refuge, Fry said.

“Are they really going to kill five people for refusing to drop a charge?” Fry asked.

Somebody get this child a clue, or several…

My nightmare is a 1918 style Spanish Influenza pandemic. Think about that in this enlightened modern age.

During some kind of flu scare In 2010, some yokel TV talking heads called my grandmother, then 102 years old, and asked her to talk about the 1918 epidemic. She was probably the only coherent person they could find who could remember it (grandma retained all of her mental faculties right to the last day of her life, which wasn’t till 2013). She told them basically to jump in the river. “You’re trying to spread needless fear and sensationalism because that’s how you make your money. I won’t be part of it. Come back when you have ten thousand people a day dying from this new flu, and we’ll talk about 1918.”
She always said the great flu epidemic was the worst public event of her life, which is saying a hell of a lot. Among other things, her teacher and 5 of her 27 sixth grade classmates died, as did two of her cousins. Her brother was desperately ill for days. He survived but never really did recover. He was always weak after that and died in 1948 at the age of 37.

You can claim, with some justification, that the government no really responds to the wishes of the American people because of dirty money(see Koch brothers) and capture by special interests (see NRA).

However, as long as we still have elections, it remains a representative Republic, however compromised, and it is up to us to fix it peacefully.

THIS. All their whining is such bullshit. Our leaders are our freely elected representatives. Like the sheriff said, that’s not how we do stuff in America—if you don’t like how things are, then use the proper channels to effect change. Vandalism and armed threats & intimidation are NOT the way to do it (unless you want to end up like Somalia, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, etc.)

He just doesn’t care, because most people don’t count in his reckoning.

It’s the same thing with the sovereign citizens that were just at Malheur. “The people” were the ranchers that signed on for their horseshit. Everybody else could either be dismissed as stupid, or was actively part of “government”—not government is the normal sense, because they’d include any unfriendly press or social institution that didn’t share their politics.

At best, you’ve got people like the remaining dolts, who imagine that it’s just that their message hasn’t got out far enough, and that any moment big groups of people will jump to their aid. But…and this “but” is why these patriot/militia movement overlap with racist and theocratic causes so often…many participants have already adapted to the idea that they are the sole “real Americans.” Everybody else must be compelled to comply or punished for the treason of noncompliance.

Which is what makes the whole claim of Malheur as “peaceful protest” horseshit. The basic premise of their movement, and the root of setting up a para-government (the Public Safety Committee) with a para-judicial (the same people, along with the fake judges) is to implement a system of punishments…and their authority to do this in the county was predicated on their ability to apply force.

Arizona’s right-wing state lawmakers seem to be aware that this episode has put one of their states’-rights cause in a very bad light and are either condemning the occupation or remaining silent (a couple claiming they weren’t following it—bullshit):

Arizona lawmakers react to Oregon standoff

Rep. Kelly Townsend, R-Mesa, tweeted that Finicum’s death was “#suicide by cop, just as he said he wanted.” She linked to a YouTube video narrated by Victoria Sharp, who said she was with Finicum when his car was stopped by police.

Townsend condemned the occupation, which started three weeks ago. She said the unfortunate shooting death does not equate the Oregon situation to other cases where states’-rights advocates believe the federal government overreacted to standoffs.

“This is not Waco, it’s not Ruby Ridge,” she said. “It’s discredited our cause. It wasn’t the right way to go about it.”

Rep. Bob Thorpe, R-Flagstaff, said he is still a strong supporter of states’ rights, but said bringing guns to a protest is not the way to make a point.

“From day one, I didn’t think they were going to accomplish a lot,” said Thorpe. “They weren’t going to get the federal government to step down, that wasn’t going to happen.” […]

Rep. David Livingston, the No. 3 Republican in the House of Representatives, said through a spokesman he had no comment on the situation.

Two years ago, Livingston could not stop talking about his experience traveling to the Bundy ranch, when protesters were ready to face off against federal agents attempting to end Bundy’s standoff in Nevada. He preceded his vote on a number of Arizona bills by commenting on how the trip changed his life. […]

Senate President Andy Biggs, R-Gilbert, an ardent supporter of states’ rights, also declined to weigh in on the Oregon standoff. He said he hadn’t been following the situation. Sen. Steve Smith, R-Maricopa, also an advocate of states’ rights, said he also hadn’t been following the Oregon situation.

“The need to take control of our land from the federal government is a plight we share,” Smith said. “But it’s unfortunate this situation came to that (Finicum’s death).” […]

Fitting that the last image of this embarassment may be a fat camouflaged derp-twinkie ranting about self-inflicted problems.

I once told my mother that if I ever made the news for doing something spectacularly bad, she was forbidden from going on TV and saying I was a “good boy”, or playing the victim card.

I told her that she & my father should say that they did the best they could, and that I was the one who screwed up, and deserved whatever I got.

I told her this (half joking) after about the 20th time some killer’s mom showed up on TV defending her son. They were not allowed to waste any time in mourning or defending me if I commited some huge crime.

Point being, responsibility was a value in my family, but so was common sense. It’s expected that I wouldn’t end up throwing my future away for The Stupid.

I may be dull, and not as responsible as I should be, but at least I’m not That Guy. I keep my failure OFF of TV.

It really seems that way. I mean I think there are things that are better left off to the state/localities but too often I see in history states rights being used to defend anything from slavery to denying gay couples equal rights under the law. If you’re using states rights to deny people rights, you’re a shitty person.

I’d be lying if I said I was upset by Finicum’s death. Does that make me a bad person? I don’t really care. People die every day, many under tragic circumstances that they have no control over and for no reason that makes any sense. They die from age and disease and hunger and disaster and war and poverty and accident and violence and many get no choice in their fate at all.
Finicum?
Finicum CHOSE the manner of his death. He defiantly bragged about it. He looked forward to it. He engineered it.
Finicum’s death is entirely on him and nobody else. Nobody.

Pretty much describes my feelings exactly. (but with fewer “fucks”)

If she cared that much about veterans, she’d donate regardless.

A lot of paralegal positions give preference to people who have worked at the firm as a receptionist or admin assistant. While I think I could be a capable AA, receptionist work would be a terrible fit for me. I mean it just seems so often prospective employers expect too much of applicants. I mean yeah I get that they don’t want to pay for a lot of on site training but I think it would be in their interest to look more at candidates who may not necessarily have the direct experience but have promise. I had zero legal experience going into my paralegal class outside an introductory administration of criminal justice class that I had to take for my history BA. Ended up getting a 98%. I did my English minor on a gamble too.

I only just thought about it, but my dad would’ve been four or five years old and my mom less than a year old when the epidemic hit…ducked a bullet there, so to speak.

It’s really interesting to think about all the pandemics i.e. the flu one and also of course the Bubonic Plague and thinking how all of us are descended from someone who was lucky enough to survive that. And of course war. I realized during my research of Germany that the part of Germany where my family’s from was a huge part of the 30 Years War. I’m also descended from a lot of youngest sons and daughters as well.

Honestly, as far as Trump ditching the GOP debate, I can’t really fault him as far as publicity goes. He could just sit there watching the debate, ripping on the other candidates and the format at his event and it would still get more rating than the actual debate.

He gets to be the focus without even showing up. He can snipe from the sidelines, and then complain when the debate mentions him or his absence (and the candidates that are there do the same) that he’s not there to address them personally.

It’s all win win for him. His supporters don’t care what he does at this point. He could admit to being a serial killer and they’d still support him (especially if they were all liberal victims).

It’s also mind boggling that he’s even in this position given that statements/actions he’s made would have completely destroyed any other person in his position. The racism/misogyny/xenophobia gets a pass - or worse - increases his polling/standing among GOPers who vote.

Yep, entry level accounting jobs where they want to you have experience in proprietary policy and practices or software.

Or am I suppose to take a job as a clerk, which pays less than what I make now, which I would be vastly over-qualified for?

It really is a Catch-22 with that. Honestly, and maybe this is my slight persecution complex but I think I’ve been passed over for a lot of work due to my Asperger’s. Maybe that’s not fair but employment is a problem for people on the spectrum. See, that’s what pisses me off about Republican governors like Rautner in Illinois. These guys bitch about welfare and public assistance going to people but they also cut resources that will help people. I’ve become much better at interviewing due to things like the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services. These programs help people like me on the spectrum.

Trump said he started out with “only” a million dollar loan from his father. Romney was more modest, he held up for an example the Jimmy John’s founder who got a $20K loan from his parents.

I wasn’t aware that Romney heart the Jimmy John’s founder, makes perfect sense given how they encourage managers to steal from employees.

I think that’s why I laugh when people try to pass off those days as the quote on quote good old days. I mean I know children still die in childhood these days but it’s not nearly at the rate it was.

This. My paternal great-grandparents lived in Brooklyn and had 12 children. In the space of two years in the 1880’s they lost five of their children to things like tuberculosis, meningitis, diphtheria, etc. I can’t even begin to fathom how painful that must have been. Shortly thereafter they picked up and moved to Connecticut.

My dad visited New York on occasion, but never lived there, yet nonetheless always expressed a deep dislike of it—my best guess is that he got that from his dad, who lost so many siblings to disease and God-knows-what-else in NYC. I mean, back in those days the conditions there were horrifyingly bad. *shudder*

Right. It was so common to lose children in those days. And it really wasn’t just a class thing. President McKinley and his wife outlived their daughters. Abraham and Mary Lincoln had only one son live beyond the age of 18. The only people who talk about the good old days are the people who never lived it.

There was a family legend that my grandfather had siblings that were twins that died in the flu pandemic but my research seems to suggest that wasn’t true. He did have two stillborn siblings though. In fact all ny grandparents but my dad’s mom had a sibling die as children but my dad’s mom lost her mother at ten so she didn’t exactly skate free to tragedy. I think that’s why I laugh when people try to pass off those days as the quote on quote good old days. I mean I know children still die in childhood these days but it’s not nearly at the rate it was.

At the turn of the 20th Century, it was horrifically high. 10% (100/1000 live births). Maternal mortality (death in childbirth) was 90/100,000 births. It’s HUGELY better now.

In my own family, my Mom’s twin sister died in infancy. Her little brother died at 2 years old from bad ice cream while the family was visiting my Great Grandparents in MO.

It really is. Before I had researched, I had heard about my grandfather losing a sister. As I had never known him, I never knew for sure but sure enough and to make matters even more tragic for his parents it was on Christmas Eve. My grandfather was only six months old when it happened so no memories of her. It’s just amazing what we take for granted these days. And as I said it really can’t even be called a class thing though certainly you can infer (haven’t seen the data) that morality was much higher among the poor for obvious reasons.

True, although we’d probably consider the living conditions of the relatively affluent at that time to be fairly squalid. It’s especially worth noting that any time you too antibiotics in your life is a time when, before antibiotics, you might have died. Also a lot of deaths in childhood were due to diseases which have been nearly eradicated by vaccination.

What he and his compadres should have done was go into the compound, sit until the feds come in, get arrested, and go to trial for that. re: #402 Backwoods_Sleuth

Yeah, I can see that. Ryan is going to claim that he wasn’t in on the conspiracy or that he wasn’t giving orders, while Ammon was. There are different defenses at play for each of the brothers, and they might try to play one off the other.

In any event, these nuts should spent a lot of time occupying federal prison.

They weren’t merely protesting, but engaging in quite a few documented criminal acts:
1) theft of government property (taking/using FWS vehicles);
2) illegal access of federal computer systems;
3) vandalism (destruction of fences, defacing FWS vehicles);
4) harassment;
5) threats to federal law enforcement;
6) domestic terrorism (18 USC 2332B);
7) conspiracy;
8) damage/destruction of Native American antiquities;
9) damage/destruction of utility property;
10) endangering the welfare of minors (for that period of time when children were brought into the refuge during standoff);
11) etc.

And why did they engage in these criminal acts? Because they don’t like the federal and state law that gives the federal government the right to manage millions of acres of federal lands. In particular, the Bundy nuts think that they should not have to pay for the right to graze on federal lands at all (even though they used to pay for that privilege until the BLM changed the fee structure, which is still well below market rate), and therefore decided to go up to a remote NWR in Oregon to make trouble. They picked Malheur NWR because of a bunch of other nuts who decided that they had the right to set fires and damage federal property (putting firefighters at risk, and also potentially covering up criminal acts - poaching). Those local nuts, the Hammonds, actually went to jail peacefully as the standoff began its opening phase, so this became a Bundy nut production.

They attracted all the wrong sorts - crazed extremists who threatened violence, had criminal records, and who explicitly stated that they’d die rather than surrender to cops peacefully.

For all my criticism of the BLM and FBI in handling the Bundy ranch and NWR situations, they still managed to pretty much end these standoffs with minimal casualties (except for the suicide by cop). That’s tremendous restraint when these nuts are for all intents and purposes domestic terrorists - particularly with their ongoing and repeated threats against federal officials and demands for changes to federal policy or else there’d be consequences.

I seriously hope the feds have been paying attention to these militia idiots and not just the pack of dipshits in Oregon. I think we’re going to see more of this, and to excuse all these guys as being as inept as this group is a big mistake. People are going to get killed, and I would not at all be shocked to see another OKC type attack being planned and carried out in the near future.

It’s funny how the wingnuts lost their shit when the report came out about these groups, how they whined and cried that conservatives were being singled out for being the violent stereotype they chose for themselves.

And what they did to this piece of public land is a travesty. They’ve plowed and dug, messed with artifacts, thrown trash all over the place, gone through people’s personal belongings and work computers. God only knows what personal information they found about the park rangers and other staff and what they did with it. They’ve menaced and threatened the locals, kept kids from attending school because of safety concerns and on and on. Every fucking one of these people should be forced to clean up their mess and be fined.

There’s a subculture of farmers, ranchers, hunters and “outdoor sports enthusiasts” who seem to think that they the only ones who know anything about the land and know best how to use it. If they had their way, the entire NPS, NFS, NFWS and any other public land would be a mud pit with not a single thing left on it inside a year. They destroy everything they touch and just move on. They’re a small minority and they are bullying the rest of us. It’s pissing me off, the parks service and our forests are one of the best ideas this country ever had and it’s always been under attack. John Muir was writing about these kinds of assholes back in his day and he warned us they would never stop and we always had to be vigilant and teach our kids to be too.

I’m so sick of people breaking things and then blaming the people who care. Fuck thse assholes, 10 yrs in jail isn’t enough. Neither is 20.

But imagine my shock that the Christian Post completely dropped any mention of Josh Duggar’s admissions of molesting his sisters/engaging in criminal acts against other girls, or the coverup by his parents in coordination with local law enforcement, and instead claimed the show stopped airing because of Josh being involved in Ashley Madison.

The stars of the series recently suffered through some scandals when it was revealed that Joshua Duggar took part in AshleyMadison . com, a website that serves as an online dating site for married men. With the family known as devout Christians, the news of Joshua’s infidelity led to the show’s cancellation.

These people know fuck all about ranching, preserving land *at all,* and they gave exactly zero shits about “locals” that aren’t already subscribers to their wacky ideas…as evidenced by their doublespeak at every single public event they attended.

Make no mistake, this talk of “returning” land was never sincere. Whatever they could grab, they’d “find” paper to justify handing it to allies. That’s what they do when they seize houses, commit fraud, or put liens on stuff—all of which, notably, have fuck all to do with “government” and everything to do with private property: muggles don’t get to own stuff the same way the double patriots do.

The 154-year-old law under which Ammon Bundy and others were arrested this week was created to deal with a nation torn apart by war.

But it made sense for the armed occupiers who holed up at Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to be charged under the Civil-War era statute, experts say, because like the Confederates, the occupiers rejected federal power.

Those who have served need to push back on these fools, intimidate the fuck out of them, it’s the only message they understand. I don’t like seeing violence, don’t want it, am not advocating for it. But sometimes being nice doesn’t do a good job of fixing things and we have to be a bit fucking hostile to make the bullshit stop. I am so sick of this nonsense. GAH.
