GOP Debate: Without Trump, Is It Still a Clown Show?

Trump bails, other candidates flail

One of the very few times you’ll see LGF linking to Fox News without exposing a comment thread full of outright virulent racism is when they’re hosting a GOP debate. This differs from the aforementioned comment threads because the racism is thinly veiled in the debate, instead of overt.

Donald Trump is infamously boycotting this clown show because he hates Megyn Kelly so much. Is that a reason to watch? Well, I’m kind of suffering from GOP debate PTSD but I’m going to watch just to see how pathetically weak the other candidates look without the billionaire alpha dog to snarl at them and spur them on.

Meanwhile, here’s how Ted Cruz is preparing to discuss issues of international importance:

From the press conference, they did deploy something similar to pepper spray after the shooting.

It was relatively clear that he was reaching for his jacket.

About ten minutes to feel they were confident they had the situation under control before they provided medical assistance.

Three other loaded weapons in the truck, in addition to the one he had on him.

American Idol on in the background. I’d prefer teen drama. At least that’s authentic. More so than any of these GOP clowns.

Re: the video… Holy shit. For anybody who didn’t see it:

Finnicum running away from the first roadblock is true. When they’re first stopped, I did see for a moment that he had his hands out the window, but after the Bundy brother got out, he did speed away.

Their SUV was hauling ass and plowed right into deep snow right next to the roadblock, and the agent narrating was right, Finnicum just barely missed an agent/cop.

Then Finnicum gets out and he’s clearly on an adrenaline spike, yelling, and was getting ready to shoot. I think if he had better footing in the snow and had only one LEO near him instead of two, he would have gotten shots off. LEO dropped him QUICK because you can see even from the airborne video that he had committed to pulling his gun, inside his jacket on the left.

He had at least a half minute or so on his back in the snow to come to terms. It wasn’t fun to watch.

Interestingly, the accounts about the truck being gassed and shot repeatedly are true, because the agents threw flash-bangs and shot pepper rounds into the SUV after Finnicum was shot.

Left out of the martyrdom narrative is that there was plenty of daylight and the truck was buried up to the windows in snowdrift.

Edit: OK, I didn’t see the FBI had the full video up that fast, so no need to read my summary.

I was amused hearing an FBI agent say “You can view the whole video on our Youtube channel.” I know everybody has one these days, but c’mon, it’s the FBI. LOL.

It does show the death, but it’s not graphic in the normal sense we think of.

It also shows the situation leading up to this, and his movements are consistent with what the police have said so far - that he was reaching for a gun, that was in his pocket, loaded.

The people I have the most sympathy for in this case are the police officers who had to pull the trigger. While I’m sure there are those for whom it wouldn’t be a problem (and I would argue those are the ones who shouldn’t be officers), I’m equally sure there are those for whom this is a traumatic experience that they hope never to deal with.

He could have lived, even after every stupid thing he did up to getting out of the truck. He made a decision and it was the wrong one. You can see it in the video, he’s got several seconds where he’s stumbling and his hands are out, and he commits to the draw, but he can’t get the gun out, and that’s it. He wasn’t trying to surrender, he just couldn’t get the gun out.

He got a generous amount of time to NOT try to pull his 9mm on armed federal agents. He used that time poorly.

Like the FBI agent giving the conference pointed out, the truck sat for 4 minutes after the initial stop before speeding off to the road block - and one of the occupants surrendered just fine. They were doing everything they could for a peaceful resolution - and barring that, a well documented one. Apparently there were two planes in the air for this.

This is something I’ve never understood. Not only do we spend more than the next dozen countries combined, ten of those countries are our allies. Depending on the metric you use, we either double or triple up Russia and China COMBINED! The last time in history that famous outlaws were shot to death on a country road by Federal agents, they DID show the car riddled with dozens of holes… To schoolchildren. As a message. Remember kids, don’t be like Bonnie and Clyde. Stay in school!

(I have visited both the ambush site and the elementary school in question. I work with, and have met, two people who’s grandparents were students at the school that day, and remember being shown the car).

We’ve come a long way from setting up a murder ambush with Colt Monitors and no witnesses. The guys who confronted Finnicum didn’t even have rifles, they were armed with handguns only, and they were actually firing towards their own barricade line.

They really did do everything reasonable to keep things non-inflammatory. Finnicum bears the responsibility for being shot.

Not the brightest bulbs on the planet. Even kids who steal flavored cigars know better.

Didn’t see the agent in the woods, failed to assess his situation, reacted poorly, and even when he decided to start shooting he couldn’t get his gun out.

Everybody who carries a gun, no matter which side of the law they’re on, has at least read on the internet that you should practice your draw and be able to use your equipment under stress and non-optimal physical situations. That’s the whole point. If you need a gun, it’s not going to be while sitting at your desk reading Facebook. There are even games for grown men where you practice this.

Even when they talk shit, they don’t have anything to back it up. There’s got to be a condition in the DSM that explains what a bunch of fucking adrenal-charged rubes these guys are. “SMH” as the kids say.

And you know, judging by his body language… I see a lot more “Do you want a piece of me?!” than I do “I’m trying to surrender”. Martyr, my pale white ass.

Something just popped into my mind. There’s a theory that when voting for president one of the reasons likability and trustworthiness are important is because voters, on some level, consider whether they want to see this person on a daily basis. If you watch the news (whether national, local, or cable) or read the newspaper or blogs, you’re probably going to hear or see the president on pretty much a daily basis. So, my question is, do voters really want to see one of these people every day for the next four years? I can’t imagine that there’s a large portion of the population that would be okay with seeing/hearing Trump daily for four years.

If it was the agent coming out of the woods that shot him (it’s hard to tell), the agent was shooting left-handed and off-balance in knee-deep snow with a small gun. Looks like good shooting. I hope the investigation releases their findings to the public.

Separately, I want to have a mini guillotine business. They could be the Pet Rocks of Christmas 2016. You have kitchen sized ones, say big enough to cut a grapefruit or a carrot. You could do a frame by frame analysis of the video from the time he exits the truck to the time he’s down on the ground, and no matter what facts you present, they will stick to their story that Finicum was gunned down by Teh Ebil Fedz.

I watched it with the sound off. I see Finicum exit the truck with his hands in the air. He stumbles around in the snow, still with hands up. Meanwhile, an LEO approaches from the woods. Then Finicum, still stumbling around, reaches down to his pocket — something no one should ever do when several LEOs are pointing guns at you — fumbles trying to get whatever is in the pocket out, and BANG! He’s down.

It’s not clear who shot him. The LEO in the woods was the closest, but one of the others in front of Finicum could have taken the shot.

When they made that run at the barricade after being stopped, that’s assault with a deadly weapon IIRC.

Nah, for the nutters, States’ Rights are trumped by Individual Rights and because the individual exists at conception (because, shut up, that’s why), abortion doesn’t get the States’ Rights treatment. Also, the Law of God trumps the Law of Man, which is why states’ rights don’t apply to gay marriage either.

I noticed watching again that the second guy out of the truck ditches his handgun after he exits.

Running through barricades only works in the movies. A real car running into a barricade would be totaled, or at least undriveable. Hard to say if Finicum was thinking of ramming his way through, then at the last moment swerved left, maybe hoping he could barrel through the snow and keep going. If he had succeeded in doing that, LEOs would have opened fire on the truck, probably.

The less-than-chaste IBD:

Trump’s Lead Shrinks As Attacks On Cruz Appear To Backfire — Poll

Problem with the IBD poll is that it uses a rather small pool for a nationwide poll. Regardless of the headline, Trump still leads by 10 points. The change since the last installment is no larger than the estimated error.

In Iowa, the NBC/Marist poll Trump an easy lead:

This is an 11 point swing than the previous installment 3 weeks ago, at which time Cruz was leading.

Finally, the PPP Iowa poll has Trump up by 8, which is 6 more than the last installment a little less than 3 weeks ago.

Since we last polled Iowa two and a half weeks ago Trump and Cruz are the only candidates to see their support move by more than a couple points- Trump’s seen a 3 point gain in his support from 28% to 31%, while Cruz has seen a corresponding 3 point decline in his support from 26% to 23%.

Cruz has seen a large drop in his favorability rating over the last few weeks, from 69/18 down to just 56/35. Trump’s continued focus on the ‘Canadian birther’ issue may really be a big part of what’s helping him at Cruz’s expense. We found on our last Iowa poll that only 32% of Republican voters thought someone born in another country should be allowed to serve as President, and attention to Cruz’s birthplace has been a constant since that last poll.

Tonight, Donald Trump announced that Marvel Comics CEO Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, dubbed the most powerful person in comic books by this very website, and his wife Laura Perlmutter donated one million dollars to Trump’s “Donald Trump For Veterans” event, held as counter programming to the Fox News presidential debate that Trump is not attending.

That was a bit of a run-on sentence but it’s late.

Was this solely in support of the veterans? Or in support of Trump? Spin doctors may swing it one way or another. But some will see that as an alliance made in heaven. Or somewhere else not too far away…

It is also worth noting that Stan Lee previously assisted Hillary Clinton over fundraising events. And that last year, Laura Perlmutter donated $2 million to a Super PAC supporting the presidential candidacy of Marco Rubio.

re: #325 Belafon

My fifth grader had to learn the writer of the Declaration, the point of it and the parts; the names of four presidents, including the two founders, of the Democratic-Republican party; and asked to think about the consequences of white males being the only ones who could participate in politics at the beginning of the country. The reason I know this is we had to review it tonight.

That’s excellent! Where do you live, if you don’t mind me asking m?

Aggressive action from the “perp”. How could it not go down as justified.

They should have just said they feared for their lives. That always works. /

This is nothing new. This is typical JEB political campaign style.

He ran the same kind of campaigns for Governor of FL.

It cost him the first election:
e.g. [paraphrased] in an interview JEB was asked what will you do for black/poor folks?”

“Probably nothing.”

(Lawton Child’s “Bull Coon speech also played a large part in JEB losing the first election)

Rubio: Fantastical deluded view of America and its politics. Not to mention truth and accuracy.

Christie: Windbag, with an ego exceeded only by his girth.

Cruz: Nasty, specious, annoying, whiny brat.

Carson: Woke up once or twice.

Paul: The rest make him sound sane and considered.

Bush: Like Paul, comes out sounding sane compared to the rest.

Kasich: I’m sure I heard him say something.
