The whole “Mailgate” business seems to be following most Clinton “scandals”: First release “damaging/bombshell” report, only to have the relevant agency then come behind it hours later to say “No, that’s not really what it says.” Like “Benghazigate,” if there’s no criminal charges forthcoming, the wingnuts are gonna go into absolute meltdown.

It’s the same basic story. All SoS’s prior to Kerry used their own mail servers. Hillary used one that was safeguarded the the Secret Service and by all accounts, was suitably secured. No hacking was detected and no emails were “wiped”. The worst thing that can be said is that after a small handful of emails were sent to her, some agency or other later deemed some of that info classified. That’s it. That’s the entire “scandal”.

Between Benghazigate, Planned Parenthood, Mailgate, Oregon and who knows what else, they have worked themselves into a frothy mess. Trump is tearing apart the conservative movement, since half of them think he’s the next Ronald Reagan, and half think he’s a liberal Democrat that will turn on them. Ted Cruz is turning off people left and right, a fair portion of the hard core nutters are buying the birther argument against him.

And when the general election comes around, the GOP gets to try and walk all off this crazy back to try and appeal to mainstream voters. I am going out on a limb here, but I’m trying my hand at political punditry. (IOW, If I’m right I’ll drag this post back out, and if I’m wrong, it’s down the memory hole).

I predict that this upcoming election will go on record as having one of the lowest turnouts in recent history. Well under either of Obamas’ elections. I’m guessing <85%.

You read it here first.

It depends somewhat on the candidates but I’m more inclined to see turnout go in the other way myself - if the GOP candidate goes all out to get voters to the booths, and the Democrats get the point across to the base that a GOP win would mean an absolute disaster, you’d see higher turnout rates on account of enough folks starting to panic.

As for an actual 85% turnout? Even 70% would be mind-blowing…

We also have to deal with several states with new, restrictive voter ID laws; WI, NC, I can’t recall all the states. That could be huge.

That, alone, could decide a President Trump.

So apparently the ‘Pacific Patriots Network’ is actually made up of whiny-ass babys:

Patriot Group Issues ‘Call To Action’ To Air ‘Grievances’ At Oregon Refuge:

“PPN condemns the DISHONEST tactics used to arrest Jason Patrick,” the statement said, accusing the FBI lying to Patrick by telling him was free to leave the refuge.

Yes, because it’s totally unacceptable for law enforcement officers to trick people into getting peacefully arrested instead of letting them stay holed up with weapons.

Well, with sane people being relatively content with a growing economy, and a lot of people turned off by Trump, I think we could see a very low turnout, though I’m hoping Hispanics and Muslims will be energized to turn out to vote against The Donald.

Putting aside the proven fact that Finnicum was a grifting, family-abandoning apocalyptic freakazoid with bizarre fantasies about murdering police -

He may be the only person from the whole kennel who acted with something approaching integrity. He said he was OK with dying, and that he wasn’t going to jail, and he intended to go down shooting, and he did, sort of. Out of this entire Fuckparade of Redneck Dada, he’s been the only person who put his money where his mouth was.

Men all over the world might feel a twinge of something when a guy who wears a cowboy hat non-ironically dies. The American cowboy is a popular image all over the world for a reason. “Fuck The Police” was his creed, and he died on his back under the Oregon sky with his hat still on. It’s enough to inspire a country song. Johnny Cash wrote about lawbreaking assholes plenty of times.

Finnicum was a disgusting sociopath, but it’s strange to see something that feels like a folk ballad playing out on Youtube in 2016.

The Ballad of Tarpman.

I wish I was a better writer. I tapped out my poetry streak about a year and a half ago. I can almost hear this song. Melancholy like Crazy Mary but with a Cash-like cadence. A really good writer would make it clear that Finnicum did himself in, while still commemorating a spectacular death at the hands of The Law. Tragedy and stupidity would be the theme, but with that tiiiiny bit of something in every good outlaw song that asks the listener, “Do you blame him? Maybe he’s in you somewhere.”

I’m not celebrating this guy, but I try to make art out of everything as a coping mechanism.

129
teleskiguy  Jan 29, 2016 • 11:02:34pm

I’m reminded of Marvin Heemeyer and James Blanning when it comes to white males on a tear against the government. Heemeyer built a tank with a bulldozer and proceeded to destroy many buildings in Granby, CO before he shot himself in the tank when he got it stuck in the basement of a hardware store. Blanning royally fucked up New Year’s Eve in Aspen by placing gasoline bombs all over the ritzy bustling downtown district, forcing a total evacuation and millions in lost tourist dollars. He ended up driving out of town and shooting himself.

Both these men hated the government with a passion. LaVoy Finicum fits the mold of these angry white dudes. Pawn of the Oppressor put it in #118 nicely, these damaged dudes “put their money where their mouth was.”

Are dildos and cows

I hope that you enjoy club fed
You shoulda been there now boy
And I hope they never let you do no pleas

You’re nothing but users and freeloading fools
You think you’re so smart, but that’s a simple delusion
You’re really a belt of mostly rusty old tools

I really wish you wouldn’t speak.

Your idiocy has really reached its peak

These guys are- acting like cowboys, just not not the romantic super-independent cowboys of fiction.

They’re the pugnacious, weirdly-feudal, undisciplined rural dudes that were the ground troops in range wars, and who occasionally trashed towns while on reccy before taking refuge back at the ranch to avoid punishment.

They might want to dress it up in Buffalo Bill Wild West show sentimentality, but this attempt at a land grab—intimidate the locals, scoff at external authority figures, declare the land belong to ranchers—isn’t much different from what regulators used to do. There’s just a few extra layers of cultural shellac atop the basic premise of “we’re a gang with guns and are a bit more tough and a bit more organized than townies, so we can demand compliance.” Basically, they’re the bad guys in the Western: the multi-tiered goon squad working for big land-holders that want a fiefdom.

If that’s all for “the” Blaine Cooper involved with the standoff, geezus!

It also belies his white privilege, because with those drug (selling and intent to sell cocaine) and kidnap (presumably for his kids) charges, someone with a skin tone darker than a paper bag would have been in the pokie for the rest of their life.

Just more fodder for the theory that he’s working for the G-Men.

Well, I did write a little ditty early on in the “occupation,” but not specifically about Finicum.

To the tune of Desperado:
Ammon Bundy, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out cuttin’ fences, you moron
Oh, you’re a dumb one
You think that you got your reasons
But the only things pleasin’ you
Are dildos and cows

When the feds get through indicting you
You’ll be one sad old cowboy
The Hammonds’ time will look like just a breeze

I hope that you enjoy club fed
You shoulda been there now boy
And I hope they never let you do no pleas

Ammon Bundy, and all the rest of you losers
You’re nothing but users and freeloading fools
You think you’re so smart, but that’s a simple delusion
You’re really a belt of mostly rusty old tools

Will you run your mouth for another week?
I really wish you wouldn’t speak.
It’s painful just to listen to your bull.
The folks in Burns ain’t buyin’ it
Your idiocy has really reached its peak

Ammon Bundy, you’re mostly hat and no cattle
You continue to prattle, but to no good end
You oughta know boy, though other morons may crave you
Your guns they won’t save you—when you’re locked in the pen.

Marvelous!

Heh. I needed to calm down after today’s ugly news about Flint, so I watched PBS shows about Mike Nichols and then one about Mary Tyler Moore. Carl was featured prominently on hers. (The scene from the Dick Van Dyke Show when she told people he was bald was a classic.) I don’t think I knew this before—but Reiner pitched the show with himself as the lead character and CBS told him that they loved the show idea, but not with him as the star—that’s when Dick Van Dyke came onboard.

The Flint water crisis continues to get worse every time you look. Now, it’s that the lead counts in the water are so high that filters can’t remove them.

You simply can’t drink the water in Flint. It’s unsafe, and Gov. Snyder and his lackeys knew or had reason to know that this would be a problem.

And every new revelation shows just how much Snyder screwed Flint.

Ignoring the problem for months. Explaining away how the water taste/quality was off.

He poisoned Flint.

Then there’s the cost. First the claim was that Flint would save money by switching from Detroit water to a new water source. Turns out that was BS. Staying with Detroit water with a new contract would actually be 20% cheaper than the new water source being undertaken (and which supposedly necessitated switching from Detroit water to the Flint River in the interim).

So, the money wasn’t the issue. We’re still waiting to hear the real reason the move was made.

And every day, the people of Flint are being poisoned by the water supply courtesy of decisions directly and proximately tied to decisions made by Gov. Snyder and his chosen emergency managers who override the decisions/powers of the local elected leaders.

re: #174 ausador

From the very beginning of the article:

The saga of Hillary Clinton and her emails took an unusual turn on Friday: the State Department announced it is withholding 22 emails because they contain information marked “top secret.” And Clinton’s campaign immediately objected, putting out a statement demanding that the emails be released.

So what is going on here? Why are these emails top secret, why is it a big deal, and why would Clinton, of all people, want them released?

It’s impossible to know the answers to those questions with absolute certainty without seeing the emails. But the key dispute is over whether the classification shows that Clinton was emailing out highly sensitive secrets or if these were everyday emails that just got swept up in America’s deeply broken classification system. There’s some real reason to believe that the latter is at least possible. Here’s what we know and how to parse this latest email controversy.

Bold is mine.
If the State department says they are classified, they are classified. Clinton’s campaign can say they are magical farting unicorns and that the State Dept. should release the emails. It doesn’t matter, they are classified. But but when were they classified? The writer doesn’t know this without “reading the emails”. So Max writes an article on what he doesn’t know, brilliant!

re: #197 Kent Dorfman

Classified information is classified. You can’t know what they say because they’re classified.

You don’t know who classified them, or why. It could be that the sources to produce the information was classified and therefore results in classification.

It could be misclassified because the contents are information that everyone could obtain from general sources, but was combined in such a way that it produces a conclusion that is classified (answering a question someone wants and is classified due to affecting policy).

What this once again highlights is that the whole classification system for data is screwed up and far too much information is considered classified - and it snowballs into who can read/access/produce this information and how much information is classified.

I get that some data should be classified - like military analysis, capabilities, etc. But often the kind of classified info shouldn’t be rated that way.

Complicating all this is that the right wing is frothing at the mouth to find any shred of wrongdoing.

Good morning Lizards.

I have an honest questions and I don’t mean to stir stuff up but I need to square this in my brain and this place is full of smart folks.

Let’s say SoS Clinton gets an urgent email that reads something like this:

We got Freddy Lenin to turn and is the brother of one of Putin’s mistresses.

When the SoS gets this email it is breaking news so it didn’t go through the classifying bureaucracy so it was not marked as classified but later on it obvious would be.

Isn’t it parsing saying that the SoS didn’t have any emails that were classified “at the time” when most of the email would happen before any classification process happens?

I am still of the opinion that this is a nothingburger but I want to keep myself honest.

What am I missing?

One of the things people don’the know about classifying information is that you can put two unclassified things together and suddenly they become classified. I make the example of a company that sells jet fuel to the air force. The fact that a truck delived fuel at 1:20 am may be unclassified, but but that with whereit went And it’s suddenly classified.

In addition, only a few in the government are allowed to classify information. Not even the SOS can do that. And they are clarifying afterwards to control what the government releases in the future.

The cognitive dissonance is reaching epic proportions. For years, the GOP has been pushing BS about how the economy sucks, no jobs, and Obamacare is destroying the country. It’s a fact free exercise to be sure, but now they’re talking about how anger isn’t a plan?

Ryan’s solution? We’ll keep pushing to repeal Obamacare.

We’ll still refuse to pass jobs legislation.

We’ll continue pushing to redistribute wealth from everyone else to the rich with tax policies that redistribute the burdens from the rich to everyone else.

On and on it goes, and yet the folks who have nothing and/or are struggling to make ends meet continue to think that billionaires and GOP elites have their best interests in mind.

re: #187 Dave In Austin

I got a bucket of minnows…..

Gonna be in the 70’s in central TX. Time to go feed the crappies.

Dave…have you tried little jigs with white twister tails?

I used to be a hell of a crappie fisherman back in the 80s. Once I learned how to use twister tails on crappies, there was never a need for live bait. And that was great because it meant I could go out on my boat with a little case of jigs and tails, a couple lightweight reels and rods with 1 lb test and have a great time. And a great meal!

The key with crappies is finding the level they are hanging at in the water. They are very temperature aware and they will school at the temp they like around 58-65°. And the school will not be deep so much as spread out.

Toss a jig in and simply let it float down as you count. If there is a crappie in the area you will feel the little nip on the jig, a gentle set of the hook and you should have caught one. Toss the jig back in the water and use the same count as to where you were in the count when the first one bit the jig. Keep working that same basic depth (count) in the area and you’ll have a pretty good time. If it warms up, go a bit deeper, if it gets colder shorten the count.

My buddy and I found out the natural fall of the twister tail works the best. No need to reel unless you didn’t get a hit then reel the jig back in and toss it again. The slow fall of a lightweight jig in the water must look pretty natural because we had great luck with the technique.

Have fun…and a great fish fry! Yum! Crappie are so nice and light and sweet. An egg bath and little cornmeal dip and then put ‘em on a baking pan and broil (not too close to the heat) for about 2 minutes a side…simple food heaven!

For antique hunting New Hope, PA and Lambertville, NJ are good too.

If you are ever in Ohio…check the area around Millersburg. It’s about 100 miles west of Pittsburgh on a straight line, probably 130 by roads. The town itself has become a bit “touristy” but the area around that part of Ohio is very much Amish and Mennonite. And plenty of regular farmers and herders.

Lots of the little towns in the area have antiques.

Here is a site that talks about Ohio Amish country and antiques.

Experience Ohio Amish Country Antique Shops And Malls

I don’t know for sure, but I have been told by some Amish and Mennonites that this area of Ohio is actually the heaviest populations of Amish in America. Lancaster PA is just way ahead in public relations and so America is sold on the idea that is Amish central. Maybe the Amish encourage that a bit so they can live in peace in the communities they do reside.

I was thinking of the Soviet Union with Lenin. Where like Lenin, Reagan did no wrong and when he did wrong, it was because outside forces perverted him and conservatism. It’s a fucking cult seriously. Ted was 11 years old when Reagan was elected President. All Ted Cruz knows about Ronald Reagan is the fan-fiction he writes where Reagan personally ended Communism in Eastern Europe. Oh and by the way Teddy, the swing vote on the SSM decision, that was a Reagan appointee. That’s okay, you’ll always have Scalia.

That and Calvin and Hobbes were some of the things I made sure to show my kids early.

Two all time classic comics for sure. Being I tend to see things from strange perspectives the minute I saw Far Side I saw acceptance for my viewpoint and that I wasn’t strange and didn’t have to always hold back those other views.

When I saw Calvin and Hobbs I saw that same perspective but through the eyes of a too-cynical kid and his too-smart stuffed tiger. So, it told me that was Calvin’s two inner voices…what he knows to be true and how he would like it to be true but is not.

There is no better way to see adult issues and comment on them but through a kid and a stuffed animal. You can get away with almost anything that way. Brilliant comic and writer.

I am a Hillary-bot, so take my opinions as such, but I feel like this is a search among the hay for a much hoped for (but probably nonexistent) needle.

I don’t see what Hillary has done wrong unless (1) she actually harmed national security in some way; or (2) she did something illegal.

(1) isn’t true. Her server was never hacked. Nothing got out.
(2) I am not seeing where she did anything illegal. If the emails weren’t classified at the time they were sent or received, no one did anything illegal. Classifying them later doesn’t retroactively make anyone a criminal.

So I think it is a big nothing-burger. Every few weeks we hear that emails that are classified were discovered!!!! And then it always turns out later that they weren’t classified at the time.

The underlying argument seems to be that maybe the emails should have been classified at the time and then if her server had been breached there would have been some harm to national security. Whatever. If I had some ham I could have some ham and eggs, if I had some eggs.

Rachel was really having a hard time holding it together last night when talking about Snyder’s bullshit. I was right there with her. Yeah, Rick, in a community that YOU’VE POISONED, people with no transportation are supposed to go to a fire station to pick up a testing kit, then go home and test the water, then take the kit BACK to the fire station, then wait three days to see if somebody calls them with good/bad news.

re: #314 EmmaAnne

Hillary didn’t start any of the seven email chains, she merely added comments to the discussion between others. None of the documents shared in the chains was marked as being classified in any way. Again we get a story based on an after the fact determination of classification. Seems it’s because of multiple bits of unclassified information from the various authors in the chain being seen as “TMI” when combined.

He, just like the people of Flint, doesn’t get a choice. Not for what he did.

And yes, I’d take the cooties on my palm and fingers if it helps the citizens of a much-abused town. Flint’s abuse is historical. Just put pumps bottles of anti-bacterial hand sanitizer around.

Notoriously solid. Most of their guitar bodies were solid Ash in those days.

Not the prettiest thing in the world, for sure. But I’ve always heard those who own them rave about them. To me it’s worth taking a flyer for another piece of gear that I no longer use.

Gotta get busy this fine and mild Ohio Saturday. I have been so disappointed with my used-to-be-favorite TV broadcasting company lately I’ve been digging up hate material on them. Last night after the Friday night jam sessions I was digging around about Chuck Todd and came across this YouTube which I had never seen before. Very telling. Listen to Todd’s response to Lewis Back about ‘barking” on a political TV show.

Add his comment to his weak claim back when he said it wasn’t his responsibility or the media’s to correct the Republican falsehoods about Obamacare it was the President and Democrat’s fault.

Add them up and Chucky and too many others are fine with the spreading of outright lies because, hey, then we can get some Dems on to correct it and we get good television and ratings. I sit back and let all rip!!!

Now you know why we have Hillary Clinton email/Benghazi scandals and Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.

Chuck Todd slipped and tells the truth about traditional mainstream news

Exactly why my basement studio is a great storage place. Stays cool, dry during 7 or more months and I run dehumidifiers in warmer humid months. It helps too that 1/4 of my basement is up out of the ground and the floor is higher than street level due to being up on a bank.

Many times our guitars are still in tune a few days later…or the usual 1/4 step down on each and every note in the warm months and 1/4 step up in the cool.

It’s a federal rule. Any felony conviction for which the judge could have sentenced the person to a year or more in jail, and for which the person has not received a gubernatorial or presidential pardon. Note “could have,” even if the judge issued a lesser sentence the rule applies.

For the record, when I worked in college bookstores back in the 80s-90s at a heuuuuge state university, the Communist Manifesto was sold as part of the “The Marx-Engels Reader” (W.W. It was not taught in lower level courses, but if you went into upper division history or other social sciences, it was likely you’d end up having to read part of it. I know I did.

But we sold far, far more small paperback copies of Plato, Aristotle and other philosophers. The business school required all majors to take 12 hours of philosophy, not that I think it helped the otherwise generally amoral students enrolled in the program.

My wingnut cousin keeps liking posts from Breitbart’s Rotting Corpse like this one:

Apparently, studying a book which probably had more impact on the last 150 years than just about any other is a sign of being a commie, or something. I really do think that they would limit free speech if they could, because they don’t trust that Democracy, Capitalism, and Liberty would win out if everyone learned about other beliefs/systems.

What does “assigned college texts” even mean, anyway? You’d have to cherry-pick that list pretty hard to narrow down to Marx. Maybe “Top Three Books Assigned for Comparative Western Economics Since The Renaissance or Politics and Economies in the 20th Century courses”.

I think the people who pass this stuff around haven’t even been to a college…

*DROOL* It looks like it even has the battery grip built it. Ooh, it has a touch screen too. I just wish they’d make a high end camera with and articulated screen, but I’m gonna guess there’s some legitimate reason they don’t that I’m unaware of.

Ah well, not like I’d be able to afford one in this lifetime regardless.

The obvious move is to provide connectivity to a detachable or remote screen via Wifi or similar. Shooting studio work while peering into an awkwardly placed optical viewfinder or a fixed unit-back screen is stupid if the camera could preview out to, say, a 4k 32” Adobe-gamut corrected monitor or, in the field, a Retina iPad. I don’t know of any high-end cameras that can do that but I’ve not been tracking the camera field much since the sensor capabilities plateaued out a few years ago.

re: #408 mmmirele

Haven’t these guys heard of Know Thy Enemy?

For the record, when I worked in college bookstores back in the 80s-90s at a heuuuuge state university, the Communist Manifesto was sold as part of the “The Marx-Engels Reader” (W.W. Norton), a trade paperback with a bright red cover (of course).

When I sent Daughter1 off to Auburn, the last thing I gave her was an old copy of Das Kapital. It had an emergency last-ditch $100 bill glued into the endpapers. I liked the pun, and I knew it could sit safely unmolested on her dormroom bookshelf.
