That’s always a good one. No dog in the fight but I’ll side with UK given geography I guess. Man I miss the days where GMU was respectable. Has not been the same since Coach Larranaga left for Miami.

You didn’t, you more merely served as the sparking point for that rant which has probably been building for a while. :) It’s something I see a lot - I think most women who have gone on to do stuff in some professional capacity do - and it’s just really obvious here, you know?

I’m glad you thought about it though.

I went to the Vape / Coffee shop after work today, they had “Fuzzy” (the shop pet), who is a 6 foot reticulated python out of his tank. I got to carry him around and sit with him wrapped around my shoulders while I had my coffee. It was fun. (and I’m sort of agnostic on snakes. I don’t dislike them, but don’t have warm feelings toward them in general. Sort of “live and let live”)

When I went into the Reptile House at the Memphis Zoo last year they had a worker there and an 8’ long indigo snake out and crawling around the floor. One women with two children walked in a minute later, said “NOPE!”, turned around and went back out.

Fucking guns (local edition):

Two adults were killed and two children hurt in a Friday night shooting now under investigation by the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office. The shooting, which appeared to be domestic related, happened in a home along the 14000 block of Jefferson Davis Highway a little before 10 p.m., according to investigators.

Virginia State Police and Caroline County Fire and Rescue units found the bodies of Andre and Tina Gray, both 42 years old, inside the home.

An 18-year-old female and a seven-year-old boy were also found in the home. They were taken to Mary Washington Hospital where they were both listed in stable, but critical condition.

Uh pardon me guys, but you belong to a party that features Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, and Rick Santorum who have actually spoken with pastors who beleive gay people should be executed. Your sexuality doesn’t mean you have to be Democrats but you have no basis to attack Clinton when your party is more closely aligned with Uganda’s government on LGBT rights than any mainstream Western party.

Trump vs. Mother Nature:

Trump to Iowa: Are you afraid of a little snow?

Lamenting his slim lead in the state, Trump pleaded with supporters to turn out for Iowa’s caucuses at a rally here Saturday, urging them not to be deterred by a looming snowstorm.

For some time I’ve been pondering if the Je$u$-told-me-to-it’s-Cruz folk will be more determined come a snow storm, than the Trumpidiots who love to shout at Trump’s rallies.

Have you checked with your local animal shelter as far as the mice are concerned? My wife once came into my office to tell me she heard “scratching” coming from a wall in the living room. When I investigated, I found a small mouse. I was able to trap it. I then took it to the local animal shelter. They told me when I asked what they would do with it was “Feed it to one of the snakes we have.”

He wasn’t considered worthy of the first pick but it’s noteworthy that they didn’t trade up to get him. I doubt O’Brien would be interested either. He doesn’t strike me as the type that tolerates circuses. Houston will need a QB though and I hope for their sake they get one. Watt and that defense deserve to go further in the playoffs.

So it looks like someone wants to have the next debate in Flint, Michigan…for the sake of the kids.

People will buy this shit because who doesn’t like using 6,000 kids with lead poisoning as props. “It’ll shine a light on Flint.” “Nothing would have happened had it not been for a brief mention at the end of a debate.” Please. I am sure Hillary cares about the kids of Flint, but don’t try to convince me that using it as a backdrop for a presidential debate is going to do one thing to speed the replacement of those lead pipes.

Yeah the Jaguars got slammed for that but it was the right move. I have nothing against Tebow personally but merely being a great college player doesn’t mean you’ll be a great NFL player. I really hated this idea that the league had it out for Tebow because of his religion. And then those same people bitched about Michael Sam who didn’t get nearly as many chances in the NFL and I’m willing to concede that talent was why Sam never really succeeded and not his sexuality though I wished him well of course since he had a difficult road ahead of him as the NFL’s first openly gay player.

One of the shop owners wife tells a story about having a sticky trap in the kitchen to catch a mouse, and then later in the evening “Kitty” (yes, that’s her cat’s name), came into the living room complaining loudly about the mouse caught on the sticky trap that was now stuck to Kitty. The Latest: Cruz: Leave school lunch decisions to districts

[…]

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz doesn’t like breakfast for lunch, and he’s citing an egg meal he had at his daughter’s school as a reason to abolish the Department of Education.

Cruz was asked at a presidential campaign stop Saturday in Ida Grove, Iowa, if he could improve school lunches there.

Cruz said he couldn’t, but then drew cheers for saying he wants to abolish the U.S. Department of Education and leave decisions like what to serve for lunch to states and local school districts.

Cruz says he recently had lunch his second-grade daughter’s school and was served eggs and waffles. Cruz says he found that “bizarre.”

He also took a swipe at first lady Michelle Obama’s push for healthier school meals. Cruz says when his wife is first lady “it means French fries are coming back to school.”

I crack up every time I hear it.

I’m making sure that the traps are out of Halley’s reach. I don’t have to worry about it too much because she’s showing no signs that she actually wants to catch the mice. They bother her and she’s whining to me about it. What a cat.

Mine will “play” with any mouse they encounter, but when it stops playing, they bring it to me and complain that it’s not working any more. My cats are idiots.

Oh, other cool thing at the shop today, one of our divers came in with his cat (a beautiful black one) that walks on a leash. Had a nice matching red harness and leash. The funny thing is that we have a mylar turtle balloon (about 2 foot + in size) that is neutrally weighted so just floats around the shop, going up and down on the air currents. It was about 2 foot off the ground, the cat saw it, and you could see it thinking “Oh shit… what the hell is that? Just play cool… “

Most of the current crop of outsider physicists are out to prove Einstein and/or quantum mechanics wrong; arguing that the Earth is flat is a fringe position in a fringe movement. But B.o.B’s Twitter crusade illuminates the best qualities of outsider physics: its skepticism, its curiosity, and its fierce desire to make sense of a confusing world in a rigorous way. These same values lie at the heart of mainstream science, too. They are what make science special. They are what make science science.

He made the choice to race away from the cops and then, when he couldn’t get around the roadblock, jump out of the car and confront them. It was a series of terrible choices, and at every point he could have been smart. But he wasn’t smart, he was stupid, and now he’s dead as a result.

re: #109 HappyWarrior

Seriously though outsider physics?

In certain circles there has been, for some time now, an effort to reframe science so that science isn’t seen so much as an authority, so that “science” will be taken in our society like any other traditional “liberal art”.

I think the whole thing fails, and furthermore that it is much more in line with the DiscoTute methods than what some would like to admit.

Now, I do believe that in the big picture of humanity, that our scientific endeavors do fall into the same category as the arts and humanities, to use traditional academic terms. This is one reason I dislike the “STEM” meme.

Still, and I remember the once-head-of-Biologos not liking my assertion I’ll restate here: The endeavor of “science” includes a philosophy - I’ll label as “scientific positivism” for lack of a better term - that ascribes reality as being absolute and outside of humanity.

So, the Atlantic author would like to paint physics as a human endeavor where there is an insider crowd, and an “outsider” crowd, just like any other social/political movement.

What the author seems to not know is that science history is full of “insiders” and “outsiders”. And, outsiders are probably not insiders for good reason.

I know that you’re a big supporter of Bernie, but isn’t this taking it too far? Hillary Clinton is trying to bring even more awareness to one of the most disgusting crimes against people of color since Tuskegee. Why are you vilifying her for it? She’s doing a good thing here. More awareness puts more pressure on getting Snyder held to account, which IMO means prison.

This US Marshall was startled by Miami Herald photographer Al Diaz’s using a flash to take this photo (Al had been hiding in the closet next to the one Elian was hiding in, but jumped out when the marshall came in to get Elian).

Note trigger finger position. Obviously this guy had been well trained.

To this day, I think Al was insane to do this to get this photograph.

Great photo though. You probably have to be a bit insane to be a top notch photo journalist.

They do get chilly though, and if a cold snake is draped around one’s warm neck, sometimes they like to kind of pull in close to warm themselves. They do have excellent muscles.

Rural Lives Matter

If they matter so much, how about leaving them alone to get on with their lives? And while you’re at it, you could encourage a strong and representative federal government to help support those rural lives. They really can’t run their economies without some outside money.

“Tony Farese” and friends have to believe the images from the moon were faked too.

Speaking of which:

New Evidence For 4.5 Billion Year Old Impact Formed Our Moon

A recent study published in Science by Edward Young, a geologist from UCLA, found evidence for a violent collision 4.5 billion years ago that formed our moon . Evidence from lunar rocks in comparison with rocks found here on Earth suggests a giant impact was the source of the moon we know today. This further supports the common theory that the moon was formed by a major planetary collision between Earth and Theia.

The samples used in this study were collected as part of the Apollo 12, 15, and 17 missions to the moon in addition to a lunar meteorite. […]

Clearly the Ball Earthers have control of NASA.

The reason the isotopes in the “moon rocks” are the same as rocks from Earth is clear - because the “moon rocks” are not from the moon but instead just picked up off the ground here.

re: #139 Pawn of the Oppressor

A tweak to the meme about alternative medicine:

You know what they call alternative physics that works? “Physics”.

Lots of people don’t understand how ‘science” is process of testing validity, not the end product. Hence both the fallacy of “x is true because science” and the fallacy of “but this scientist says y, so there must be doubt.”

Basically, most of humanity operates in terms of A is A. The idea that A is only proved A after testing, retesting, and accounting for variables…and that one day A might not be A because of manipulation of conditions…they’re not up to it.

We love certainty and are basically programmed for pattern recognition. We’re also social learners, so a bunch of fallacies reduce down to “I trust people, not data.” The same things that make us smart can make us super stupid. Skepticism and empiricism are disciplines, and folks struggle to apply them evenly and thoroughly.

Also…this is the internet. Fucking everything goes on the internet because it takes the pattern recognition flaws, the social learning flaws, and speeds them up a thousandfold by simultaneously connecting everyone *and* forming an endless series of cul-de-sacs in which one can ensconce and group-think. And half the wannabee experts are teenage girls that are actually 40-year-old shop teachers.

My boa constrictor would snuggle in close during Chicago winter nights but never go into squish mode. There is a very big difference between kill for food and oops, squished someone cuz I was cold. AFAIK the latter has never happened. Snakes are certainly not among the most intelligent of species but they are not as dangerous by any means as most human lore would depict.

Where do these people come from? Have they ever been on an airplane or on a mountain? It is obvious from a height that there is a curvature in the earth’s surface. The earth is like a shiny coin balanced on its edge between God’s finger and a bar top. When God idly flicked the coin while awaiting another drink, the earth began to spin. The earth’s spin will slowly decrease in God’s bar time until it comes to rest. In human terms, we are now at “last call.”

My first husband had a 6’ boa constrictor who loved snoozing in the waterbed. I didn’t mind the snake but I sure didn’t sleep with him. Did answer the door once with the snake wrapped around my neck, late at night when I didn’t know who was ringing the bell and I was nervous about answering it — it was funny watching the guy at the door jump back about five feet.

What always amazed me is that the snake never bothered our cats, even when we had a batch of Siamese kittens. Before the markings darkened, they sure looked a lot like his usual rodent rations.

The fact that this is a thing now and that mainstream journalists are even entertaining this twaddle as worthy of any consideration beyond low-grade snark - is exasperating.

They tend to start their search for veracity by trusting their own faculties over everybody else’s faculties. Ergo their “impressions” and naive theorems are given undue weight, and a more thorough systematic method of modeling/hypothesizing is treated as less or equally valid. I don’t know if there’s a fallacy term for this, but there’s a trend I think of as the “temporarily embarassed Galileo.” It’s evoked both cynically and earnestly—that you’re so clever you’ve skipped over everyone else, and they’ll have to catch up to understand how right you are.

This is the science edition of one of my favorite chewtoys: narcissism bends epistemology around it. Usually I invoke it when dealing with politics, but it also applies to scientific veracity.

The thing is, there’s a tipping point: either you can concede you might not have everything buttoned down, or you can claim the rest of the world is wrong. Hence the appeal to conspiracy: no evidence isn’t no evidence, it’s evidence maliciously concealed.

A great example—and, ironically, a man who just burst forth with a rant about “the Internet killed truth”—is Bill Maher.

Maher isn’t actually smart—he just has the verbal skills to act smart in a audio-visual format (resisting the opportunity to worry another chew-toy, failure to recognize verisimilitude as opposed to veracity—but he sure as fuck imagines himself to be. Hence ever single one of his rants about health amounting to “I don’t believe this, people I like don’t believe this, so it must not be true, and all evidence it’s true must be counterfeit.”
