Stupidest Man on the Internet: Singer Jill Sobule Is a Racist, Socialist America-Hater

Another raging incoherent rant from the SMOTI
Wingnuts • Views: 58,375

In the strange twisted mind of Jim Hoft, the fabled Stupidest Man on the Internet, criticizing racism makes you the real racist. And you’re a socialist too, because you are that’s why. And you hate America, because only people who hate America criticize racism and are the real socialist racists.

I know that’s a really ugly paragraph, but it matches the ugliness of Jim Hoft’s tortured brain.

Hoft’s latest target for an incoherently vicious, grammatically challenged rant is singer Jill Sobule, who wrote a song about the right wing paranoid phrase “we want our America back” and sang it at a Bernie Sanders rally. This really sets the SMOTI off: WTH? Band Sings Racist, America-Hating Song at Bernie Sanders Iowa Rally (VIDEO) - The Gateway Pundit.

Another singer Jill Sobule, a 90s throwback, sang a racist anti-American song to get kick off [sic] the Socialist rally.

Here are a few lines from the song about racist America:

Life had a paler shade of white.
When they say we want our America back, our America back, our America back,
When they say we want our America back well what the f*ck do they mean?

The massive crowd of students then joined in and sang with the band.

Of course, this is not an “anti-American” song, and it’s certainly not “racist.” It’s calling out racists like Jim Hoft, and that’s what works him up into a fine lather; remember that Hoft is well-known for his nasty race-baiting posts, and for frequently citing white supremacist sites as sources — and sometimes even plagiarizing entire posts from them.

So it’s ok to have young kids singing a creepy “patriotic” song at a Trump rally but god forbid someone on the other side writes and performs a song critical of this nation.

Is this going to be the Dixie Chicks all over again??

Dixie Chicks made the mistake of biting the hand that feeds them, being unaware that God, GOP and Country music are major cultural identifiers for them, criticizing one will bring about your demise on the market (and result in anonymous death threats)

The coyote “attacks” have happened a bunch of times, to enough people, to warrant calls to figure out what’s going on with the animal. Or, animals, as the latest grist out of Bolinas has it that there are now two coyotes acting a little weird, or a lot weird: Drive-by coyote stare-downs have now become part of the normative experience for a Bolinas-based individual who makes numerous nighttime airport runs every week. We are not identifying this individual, who fears retribution at the vengeful paws of these bushy-tailed beasts. He would only say, “It’s a terrifying, yet beautiful thing to behold.”

The coyote could be “tripping its tail off,” the paper speculated, adding that, “The cars would therefore be some sort of coyote vision, a dark vision of human interlopers, who must be stopped before the rents get any higher in West Marin. That would be kind of cool.”

The psychedelic mushroom amanita muscaria (fly agaric) grows wild in the cow pastures of West Marin County, and coyotes have been photographed eating them. The speckled, red-capped fungus is believed to be the one Alice in Wonderland eats before she goes through the looking glass.

When sexism and racism are so ingrained in the public consciousness it is hard to separate them from other “progressive” tendencies. The German left saw that in the rise of militant feminism, the early leftists were thoroughly political in their outlook had no concept of women beyond the kitchen and bedroom.

A lot of female activists felt terribly excluded by the movement and developed a very aggressive and militant form of feminism because they felt that they were being attacked and ignored from all sides.

We had ravens hanging around my parent’s place in Oregon. They were checking out the ant hills for dumped mice/chipmunks that had been caught in the traps. They also got a pack rat corpse every so often.*

* - My father had a sort battle of wits with one living in the woodpile that had learned to scratch wood chips onto the trap before going for the peanut butter. I advised him to put down a second unbaited rat trap next to the first one. Which succeeded in offing that particular clever rodent.

Are there photos of the damage that’s been done to the nature preserve in Oregon? Real ones? Someone sent me a link this morning that was not for real, it was a construction site with lots of junk left on it after a job was complete. I’ve heard they’ve left trash all over and destroyed a lot of other stuff, plowed a new road, etc, but don’t know where to look for pictures.

Edit: I see it was automatic. Duh.

Twitter Collection:

If you haven’t read the tweets above, the following won’t make much sense. If you have, then you’ll probably find it pretty disturbing.

Brief overview of Montana Freemen form the Billings Gazette:

Montana Freemen standoff
Updated Jan 25, 2016

2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the 81-day standoff between FBI agents and the anti-government group known as the Montana Freemen. The standoff began March 25, 1996, and continued until the last members of the Freemen surrendered on June 14, 1996.

The group, which had become increasingly frustrated by the government in the midst of foreclosure proceedings on the property near Jordan on which they gathered, began holding mock trials of public officials and filing claims against officials, private citizens and journalists. […]

More details here:

The Freemen standoff
Mar 25, 2006
In 1996, region held its breath for 81 days while world watched

JORDAN — The quickest way to get booted out of a bar here is to start talking about the Freemen standoff that turned this remote farming-ranching community upside down 10 years ago this spring, says Garfield County Sheriff Kelly Pierson.

Nobody in Jordan will commemorate this dubious anniversary with enthusiasm. Few welcomed the well-armed and disgruntled anti-government extremists in 1996. Fewer still want to be reminded of the tense 81-day standoff that clogged county roads with an army of FBI agents and battalions of reporters and divided the loyalties of families and neighbors. […]

From the SPLC:

Montana Freemen Trial May Mark End of an Era

For years, the Montana Freemen issued ‘common-law’ edicts harassing local officials and others, but after a standoff with the FBI, a federal trial seems likely to topple their group.

They were the so-called Freemen. For years, they had buried local judges, sheriffs and county attorneys in a forest of paper. Treatises on the Magna Carta, phony court judgments and computer-generated financial instruments — all claimed the government had no jurisdiction over their persons or property.

Then a small army of FBI agents laid siege to the remote, 960-acre farm the Freemen occupied in Garfield County, Mont. Bristling with their own armed patrols, two dozen men, women and children with enough food and fuel for months of survival seemed poised to turn routine arrests for fraud and conspiracy into a Waco-style disaster. […]

Sound familiar? I think I understand now where the Bundys got their inspiration from. Guess it’s not the end of an era after all, unfortunately.

There aren’t likely to be any assets to seize to recoup the costs.

The only thing I could find about damage referred to the problem of deferring maintenance of a canal (undermined by muskrats) and some damage caused by militants driving across private ranchland when they couldn’t find the keys to the equipment blocking their driveway. I think they need to get in there and take a look.

Richard Dawkins is a grown man, a best-selling author, a prize-winning scientist and an emeritus fellow at Oxford. On Twitter, he is something else entirely. His self-presentation there is comically indistinguishable from that of a precocious, argumentative, peer-despised pre-teen who has read a few Richard Dawkins books: obsessed with his own internal logic but oblivious to the context in which people are rolling their eyes at him, relentlessly condescending and aggrieved by the opinions of other humans. He’s best known for having opinions many consider reactionary and Islamophobic, and also for the time he was upset he was prohibited from taking a pot of honey on an airplane. […]

Some of the reviews are good:

Bundy is a welfare queen who expects taxpayers to supply his cows with grass, water, roads and fences while he refuses to pay the ridiculously minimal grazing fees which cover less than 10% of the government’s costs. Like so many priviledged western ranchers, he’s also a racist whose offensive rants were even too much for Fox News to stand. That’s a pretty low bar. It get’s worse, two of his militia followers, believing all the hyped up anti-police talk, left Bundy’s Bunkerville compound and killed two Las Vegas police officers before killing themselves.

Cox, his personal secretary—since when did rural rancher need a secretary?— glosses over all this to present her “boss” as a hero. Sickening.

I gotta say, catching up since my days off, I’ve lost a lot of respect for Sanders in recent weeks. It seems that, as he gets closer to the primaries and begins to look like he might actually have a chance, he’s dropping the “nice guy who wants to talk about the issues” act and covering up his one-note song by beginning to go on the attack. It really is starting to erode the facade of him as being above “business as usual.”

Off topic, but we caught a little jumping spider in the house this morning, but before relocating it to the great outdoors, Mr. C. fed it a fruit fly. (Put it in the little plastic container with the spider which proceeded to catch and eat it.) It is outside now, but I think it will be back. (“Hey, it’s warm in there, no predators, and they feed me!”)

My cat had the worst habit for some time of catching and tormenting spiders. She would walk around with a half dead spider dangling from her mouth, legs all broken etc. I would have to coax it away from her: “Put your toy down little girl. You broke it and it won’t play with you any more…”

‘I’m Not Electing A Pastor In Chief’ — How Iowa’s Evangelicals Are Deciding

Ted Cruz has one of the most overtly religious stump speeches on the Iowa campaign trail.

In Emmetsburg, Iowa, Friday the Texas senator quoted the Bible and exhorted his supporters to pray “each and every day” until Election Day.

“He’s real,” said Bobbie Clark, a Cruz supporter from Algona. “There’s something there. There’s substance behind it. It’s not just talk.”

[…]

The agony of Iowa’s evangelicals

[…]

At events for both GOP presidential candidates across the Hawkeye state, voters say they are torn between backing the committed Christian conservative who is solid on their principles, or the once-liberal, thrice-married candidate who they believe would make the stronger president.

Sherry Benson, a 57-year-old graphic designer from Marshalltown, said she is still trying to come to terms with Trump’s evolution on abortion. Benson calls abortion “the biggest sin of our country.” The anti-Trump television ads detailing his shifts—with arresting clips of the candidate talking about his support for abortion in 1999—have kept that issue fresh on her mind.

[…]

Thompson had a simple answer when asked to explain why Trump, a Presbyterian, is leading among evangelicals in some polls given his personal history and changing stances over the years.

“We want to see a winner, and I think we perceive him as a winner,” he said.

Cruz has worked diligently for months to court evangelical voters, who often show up in droves every four years to caucus for Republicans. That decision for many evangelicals between head and heart could very well decide who wins Iowa on Monday night after a tight race between the Texas senator and the real estate magnate. The Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa Poll released Saturday evening found Trump leading Cruz 28% to 23%.

While many had assumed that Cruz would have a lock on white evangelical voters, particularly as support for retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson has waned, Trump has shown surprising strength within that voter group […]

Substantially, the contemporary Republican party is the party of Christian nationalists. This is quite clear, and troublesome. It’s why Trump transformed himself into a faux-fundamentalist, because he knows that if brought his life-long in-practice-an-atheist worldview into the campaign forefront he could never win.

I just heard a clip of him speaking today in Iowa: “vote for me because I’m a winner, and if you vote for me, I’ll win….” He didn’t follow that to the logical conclusion of “if you don’t vote for me I’ll lose and I’m also a loser.”

In a very large part, Trump’s campaign is built around the idea that many Americans feel like “losers”, that a sense of failure haunts many Americans, and that it is this angst which drives things like Tea Partyism.

Trump’s probably right, as many of us who have followed the rise of the hate-right in current times have focused in on why so many in the South try to rewrite the Civil War.

Trump is the promised escape from our collective failures.

Good analysis. I hadn’t really thought about the efficacy of just saying “win” and “winner” over and over and over again. To paraphrase my beloved Firesign Theater, ‘I don’t want to sanction stupidity as our national sport, but you have to give it to Trump….”

This is getting some coverage today:

Trump’s Negative Image

Most political and media commentators have at this point installed Donald Trump as the GOP front-runner on the eve of the first actual voting set to begin on Monday in Iowa. But this narrative tends to obscure the fact that Trump is the most unpopular candidate of either party when the entire U.S. population is taken into account — and that he has a higher unfavorable rating than any nominated candidate from either of the two major parties going back to the 1992 election when we began to track favorability using the current format.

At this point (two-week average through Jan. 27), 33% of Americans view Trump favorably and 60% unfavorably. It’s that 60% unfavorable figure that I can focus on here.

Hillary Clinton currently has a 52% unfavorable rating among all Americans, while Jeb Bush is at 45%, Chris Christie 38%, Ted Cruz 37%, Marco Rubio 33%, Bernie Sanders 31% and Ben Carson 30%. Trump’s 60% is clearly well above all of these. Putting his favorable and unfavorable ratings together yields a net favorable of -27 for Trump, far above the -10 for Clinton and for Bush, the next lowest among the major candidates.

[…]

Well, ok, but does that really matter?

How much are those unfavorability ratings dependent upon familiarity?

Note that some of the candidates with the best unfavorability ratings are probably not very well known to the general population.

The so-called culture war has been raging for decades now… and abortion is available to many, porn is free everywhere, schools now can’t offer prayer, etc.

So a fundamentalist may present himself as a “loser” in the culture war.

The catharsis for this isn’t more religion.

The catharsis is winning.

And thus Trump gets almost as much of the religious vote as the other candidates who, even to their supporters, can seem like long shots at winning.

Weigal jumps on that deceptive campaign flyer sent out by Cruz:

Cruz mailer, inspired by political scientists, is condemned by Iowa secretary of state

[…]

Cruz’s campaign quickly confirmed the origins of the mailer, even as Cruz endorser and radio host Steve Deace pronounced it fake. And Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, a Republican, condemned it.

“Accusing citizens of Iowa of a ‘voting violation’ based on Iowa Caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act,” he said in a statement. “There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses.”

[…]

Cruz, however, had no regrets.

“I will apologize to nobody for using every tool we can to encourage Iowa voters to come out and vote,” Cruz told reporters in Sioux City, Iowa. He pointed to a statement from one of his supporters here, former Iowa secretary of state Matt Schultz, who said the mailers are “common practice” and are modeled after 2014 mailers put out by the Iowa Republican Party.

Running joke back in the day was a riff on the meme “A cucumber is better than a man because…” The dirty old broads I ran with used to say “If you drop a cucumber off of a radio tower it won’t turn into a Twinkie.” Which was not entirely fair to Peter Davison, who I do like, but there were only a few of his stories that really grabbed me.

Ten pushups is well within the capability of everyone running except probably Christie, who would just teeter-totter on his belly.

Soros regretted supporting Obama in 2008, Clinton emails show

In 2012, The New Yorker reported that Soros felt snubbed by Obama after trying unsuccessfully to set up a White House meeting with the president. Honestly the CU decision makes me wish labor had the power and influence it once had in politics because it would be great to have labor’s voice countering that of the Kochs, Adelsons, etc of the world. At least labor represents the average American rather than the interests of someone wealthy beyond our wildest dreams and someone who will be fine regardless of who is President.

re: #335 allegro

Absolutely true. Try it with a mixed group of women and men. Has to do with women’s lower center of gravity.

I was just going to say the same thing;

Center of Gravity Science Experiments

Boys vs. Girls

Turn a chair sideways and slide it against the wall. Choose one male student and have him bend over at a 90-degree angle. Place the crown of his head against the wall and position his feet in front of, but not under, the chair. Make sure he keeps his back as flat as possible and ask him to lift the chair, while remaining in the bent over position, and stand up. Repeat the procedure using a girl. The girl will lift the chair, but the boy will fall. This has to do with the position of a boy’s center of gravity relative to a girl’s. When the boy bends over the chair, his center of gravity is directly over it, so he needs the wall for balance. When he tries to lift the chair, he falls. When a girl bends over, her center of gravity is lower; when she stands, it remains over her feet. This keeps her in balance and allows her to lift the chair. Test this in a padded area in case a student falls during this experiment. […]

Oh I understand that. I don’t begrudge her for taking the money at all. I just hate that there are these billionaires like Soros, Adelson, Koch, etc that use money as an influence.

Personally, while I wholeheartedly think **** (I like to call it by its full name [Citizens United Not Timid] as a reminder of the purpose of the suit) is more detrimental to Republicans.

Perhaps, by the time it’s done serious damage to the GOP, they’ll decide to challenge a related case.

If they get any favor.

Check this out regarding Soros and Obama.

Soros regretted supporting Obama in 2008, Clinton emails show

Yeah i guess so. Soros wasn’t as much Obama’s guy in the way Freiss was Santorum’s or Adelson was Newt’s and nwo Rubio’s though. I just hate the decision because it makes an already monied system even more tied to money.

Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light) lives in Germany.

I can be your go-to if you need someone in the Eastern time zone.

Thank you kindly. IT was a real honestly surprise honestly.

OT-I wandered over to Stonekettle Station earlier and happened on the fact Jim Wright is a woodworker and sells stuff on Etsy. Who knew? I ordered the Shopkat earrings and pendant for my daughter’s birthday (coming up in a couple months.)

I’m trying to think of an excuse to buy the shallow plate the earrings are shown on…

re: #346 Eclectic Cyborg

I suspect him and Kasich will be out soon. I’m curious to see how long Jeb! will hang on for.

I disagree. Kasich will surprise in New Hampshire and with others dropping out he will start to pick up some ‘establishment’ backing.

I’m not sure where his bucks are coming from, and as I’ve said, I don’t like him…but he is claiming he is in a full nationwide, full primary season campaign. He seems to think New Hampshire is his big surprise and he never touched Iowa.

We shall see, but it seems he thinks he is the real established Republican and I think even that Kasich endorsement in the New York Times hints that there is a hope that Kasich can rise out of the outrageous nuts in the race…like Trump.

I think Jeb? has the money, if the chutzpah, to last until Super Tuesday.

I believe there is a female version I’ve seen women do. I think you use your knees instead of toes as the rear touching point.

Anyone?

Those are called half pushups. They’re a whole lot easier than full pushups — it’s all about the arms, you hardly even need pecs.

Natalie Maynes’ original statement wasn’t critical of America as a whole at all.

It wasn’t critical of America at all—just her personal opinion of one particular person!

Soros is just so much ooga booga.

Her statement was pretty fucking tame especially looking at what righ twing favorite Ted Nugent has actually said. And I didn’t even want Nugent’s music to be taken from the air waves because of it but I sure as hell did want people to realize whata pathetic psycho he is.

I have been lusting for one of Jim’s bowls for years…yes, years.
It would be a total budget-buster, but his work is art and totally worth his asking prices.

I’m not seeing any bowls actually for sale with prices on them, but the one he has for the prize drawing is gorgeous. I’m sure they are worth whatever he charges for them-the prices on his other things seem really reasonable.

Here’s a post of his from 2008 when he had the turned birch bowls for sale (the kind I lust for):

My favorite bowls are the ones he makes out of burls.
All nicely gnarly and totally gorgeous.
