Wednesday Jam: Amanda Marshall, “Dark Horse”

YouTube

From the very first note I heard Amanda Marshall sing, she became one of my very favorite vocalists. She went through hell in the music industry ( a depressingly common occurrence), and basically retired from performing and recording after making three great records. This sadly under-appreciated song is from her eponymous first album, still one of my most frequent playlists, and not dated at all.

In 2012, there was word that she was working on a new record, but so far it hasn’t appeared: Amanda Marshall’s career comes full circle.

McGovern lost my home state by 37 percent, and I doubt Sanders would do any better. At least we have no down-ballot races other than Congress. We’ve only got one Congressional Democrat in a majority-black district, so he’d likely survive. Senate seat’s a goner, but it probably is anyway.

One of the things that I’ve noticed suddenly became popular to talk about among Bernie supporters is “Emailgate.” And it suddenly became popular the same day that Bernie, after months of insisting on sidestepping the “scandal” with an emphasis on discussing the issues, decided it was a “serious issue.” What day was that? 24 hours before the Iowa caucuses, where he was hoping for a big win to kick of “Bernmentum.”

Given the timing of that, and his attitude since Iowa, I’m beginning to consider the possibility that the man’s handlers have sat him down and told him the “nice guy” act was not working. The emphasis on talking the issues has only highlighted that he can’t address any issues besides his pet ones, and that he can’t handle questions about how he’ll make any of his proposals a reality. And going negative, going on the attack, is the only way he can possibly broaden his support. Problem is, he picked the absolute worst way to do so, feeding wingnut conspiracy theories to his supporters while starting a fight over who’s the “real” progressive.

I think we might have seen the end of “nice guy” Bernie and from here on out, we’re going to the cantankerous old man who can’t stand being questioned.

You know speaking of dividing Americans. Let’s talk about that for a second since Marco’s party likes to accuse the President of doing that. What have they done to attempt to bring the country together the past seven years? Is it the constant attacks on the President’s character? The implications that he’s not a real American because he had an unique upbringing. The constant attempts to repeal his signature legislation that got millions of Americans insured. The attacks on gay people for wanting to join the military, have the same rights in marriage as straight couples. Or maybe it was women who wanted to be paid the same as men. Let me remind Lizardom that Marco Rubio is a man who used a hug by his primary opponent as a talking point to get elected. He’s no moderate. He’s no different from Donald Trump and Ted Cruz when push comes to shove but the difference is those two know they’re assholes, Marco wants to convince you that he’s nice Marco and different from those two but he’s not.

Honestly, I think his chances would be better against Rubio than against Trump or Cruz. Against Trump, they share inchoate anger with the state of the world but Trump offers a juicier set of targets. Against Cruz, they both share disdain for the Obama administration, but one of them knows what he wants to replace it with, while the other hasn’t a clue. Against Rubio, his strategy isn’t as obviously dominated.

Carter is a religious man, but he doesn’t require others to ahere to his religious beliefs.

This is probably best emplified by the people who worked with him in the White House. Hamilton Jordan and Jody Powell were probably the most public examples of Carter’s secularism.

There was no religious test to be part of the Carter team.

It infuriates me that Marco Rubio is gaining any traction. He’s one of the folks who were all rah-rah about invading Iraq and consequently unleashing the chaos now reigning in the region. As the diplomat Richard N. Haass put it, “the civil wars and proxy wars there have become impossible to distinguish.”

A key factor in unleashing the current chaos was America’s 2003 invasion of Iraq. By eliminating Saddam Hussein’s Sunni regime, the U.S. paved the way for a Shiite-led government, a development that tilted the regional balance of power toward Iran and left Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia feeling encircled by a Shiite coalition.

I would have hoped that all the people who were gung-ho back then about invading Iraq would take stock of what they unleashed, and maybe feel a bit chagrined, even humbled, by what they wrought.

Your premise has a flaw. These things are not at all exclusive. Perhaps the opposite. Running a campaign is in fact making point after point after point to show why you should get the nod instead of the opponent. Some took offense. Was it a call for extremism? Only if you think the term is an extreme term. Like the way we use conservative these days. I had thought that the term was not a pejorative other than in GOP circles. If it’s a call to action designed to rouse the moderates to act more strongly, It’s hard to see this as so terrible a moment for Bernie. That was more my take on it honestly.

Packwood is ironic given what later brought him down. Jeffords though gets me thinking at why I don’t like Bernie using his state as an excuse for voting the NRA line on guns. Jeffords IIRC did vote for the Brady Bill, only Senate GOPer to so. And I was just about to wonder what he was up to these days and saw he passed away in the summer of 2014. Damn, that’s a shame.
