Cooper said he has received death threats from people who are suspicious he was spared an indictment. “I have been slandered,” he said. “To that I just say, I just tried to do my patriotic duty as best I could.”

RTWT, but here’s the final paragraph:

Of course this is not the first time that people have said mean, misinformed things about a scientist on the internet. And attacking the NSF for funding research that sounds funny when described out of context is definitely not a new thing. Sen. William Proxmire handed out one of his Golden Fleece awards. to my PhD advisor for his own work on sex-changing fish back in 1978. Did I learn anything from my experience? Yes: first, nobody ever actually reads the whole article. Second, the words ‘sex-change’ will definitely not be in the title of my next grant. Maybe ‘gender transformation’ instead?

I’m sorry that Finicum died but I am sorry but these people who treat him like a victim of police misconduct are the same people who tell me “Blue lives matter” if I question teh actions of the police during the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, etc. The guy was armed and the guy said they’d never atke him alive. He probably was mentally disturbed but that’s exactly what makes the Bundys such shitty people that they took advantage of this guy’s problems and paranoia about the Feds. If i were Finicum’s family, I’d be pissed at Bundy more than anyone else for doing this stupid stunt in the first place.

To RWNJs, as to everyone, science is a tool. But RWNJs often have to denounce the science they can’t use, which is usually the reality-based science. Because Palin has instilled the idea that God gave her a son with Down’s (for reasons, which are God’s), she cannot wish better for him through science.

Some here at LGF have, in the past, questioned why I stay registered as a Republican and this is a good example of why I do.
Every single local political office here is decided in the (closed) Republican primary in May. General election in November is just a formality.
In the past, we have had extreme Libertarians run as Republicans for office, and self-styled “constitutional sheriff” candidates.
I keep my registration as Republican so I have a voice in keeping the lunatics at bay.

The other thing is, I think that many, many progressives’ positions on marriage equality ‘evolved’. I know mine did.

I was always in favor of Civil Unions for same sex couples, and in fact I thought it was a good idea to separate ‘marriage’ and ‘civil union’ so that every couple would have a civil union, sanctioned by the state, with all the legal benefits currently accruing to marriage currently. If a couple then wanted to be ‘married’, they could seek out the church/temple/mosque/woodland grove of their choice and get married. But that wouldn’t get them anything legally.

Then I thought about it a little more, and realized that was stupid. Why make it so complicated? Just let everyone get married, fer cripes sake!

We’re in agreement then which is why I think it’s unfair of Sanders’ camp to attack Clinton on it. I remember feeling the same way, equal civil unions with the same exact benefits and as late as 2004, that was the progressive position, it’s not like Clinton voted for the Federal Marriage Amendment or attacked gays.

See, this is the sort of thing that is going to bury Sanders if he’s nominated. The GOP has had 20+ years to unleash their full bile and hatred upon Clinton and there’s not much by this point that we don’t know. Bernie supporters can’t really say the same.

If you read message boards where Trump supporters post, many of them are quite explicit in stating that they want a white country, and that is why they support Trump, because he will deport the hispanics and keep them and the muslims out.

True, but those cases (as seems to be usual in American politics) were “fringe” candidates running against very Mainstream ones (and incumbents, to boot). Which usually does mean floor-wiping time. But I can’t recall a Presidential election between two fringies in relevant history. Though I supposed in a Rubio-Sanders matchup, Marco gets to be “mainstream” by default (?)

Yes, Rubio is actually extremely conservative, but his strategy is to give a lot of vaguely aspirational talk and come off as less strident than Cruz. And the media helps by lumping him in with Kasich, Christie and Bush. Rubio’s strategy is to win votes in the center, while Cruz is all about firing up the base. The problem with that strategy is that it fires up the Democrat’s base as well.

It’s not fair since Rubio is just as extreme as Trump and Cruz are and honestly I find worse since he tries to weasel out of it but that would be the narrative unfortunately and I hate to say it but the optics would just be awful looking. Bernie looks old enough to be Rubio’s grandfather.

Twisty fusion reactor goes online after 19 years of work

Germany just took fusion power one big, important step forward. The country’s Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics has just switched on Wendelstein 7-X, the first large fusion reactor based on a twisty stellarator design. It’s only producing hydrogen plasma at the moment and won’t actually generate energy, but power isn’t really the point. Instead, it’ll serve as proof that stellarators could provide energy while operating continuously, unlike current (tokamak-based) fusion reactors that operate in short pulses. They should be safer, too.

The inaugural test phase will run through mid-March, after which point it’ll get an upgrade to let it run hotter and longer. Eventually, it should discharge for up to 30 minutes at a time, and muster a heating power of 20 megawatts.

Yeah I’ve been unimpressed so far. I also think Hillary would definitely point out his poor attendance at the hearings he’s missed as a very valid suggestion that he cares more about his ambitions than actually doing his job. As of last August, I am the full-time-stay-at-home caregiver for my 91-year-old mother who lives with us and can no longer be alone for 7-8 hours a day. Thanks to my husband’s union we have retiree healthcare till we make it to Medicare; thanks to his frequently-tried patience we’re going to figure out a way to keep me home as long as we are blessed to have that frequently trying old dear with us. No, it isn’t easy but it’s what we need to do — like that gentleman’s mother, she raised five kids and cared for her husband and her mother till their deaths, and now it’s my turn to take care of her.

You guys know I’m no Boome basher or Bernie can do no right type of person but Steinem I don’t think helps her cause at all with this. Now having read Connie Schultz-Brown’s piece, I found that much more reasonable and I didn’t get a condescending vibe from that since I think Connie’s points are fair because she is absolutely right to point out that it’s not right to question someone’s progressive street creds over who they’re supporting but I do have a problem with what Steinem did here. And that said, I have a bigger problem with some of the sexism I have seen from Sanders supporters who call Clinton a bitch or in general sound like right wingers when describing her. One other thing though, if Bernie’s supporters want to hold the youth vote over her then maybe we should ask why their guy struggles so much with racial minorities? If they’re going to hold it over Clinton’s head that she struggles with Millenials, true fact, then it’s also true to point out that Bernie struggles with racial minorities and i would actually argue doesn’t seem to understand their issues even if he does have a good overall record of voting for their concerns.
