Remaining Republicans Duke It Out in New Hampshire

They’ll be gunning for Rubio tonight
Politics • Views: 38,708

The ABC News Republican debate in New Hampshire is about to begin, with only 7 candidates remaining on stage, and no kiddie table debate tonight. Carly Fiorina is filled with rage at being excluded, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz will be at each other’s throats, and everybody will be attacking Marco Rubio.

It’s going to be a clown free-for-all up there in New Hampshire tonight. Here’s our first live-blogging thread to laugh at the festivities, with embedded live stream courtesy of ABC News.

It’s sort of weird not to have the kiddie table debate anymore. I guess our consolation is we get to see the Cruz/Trump/Rubio trio spend at least one more time on stage amongst the zombie campaigns.

The idiot actually seems to think banning him caused Twitter’s stock to decline. How can somebody be that much of a narcissist? I’ve never seen anyone this self-obsessed.

He must be drinking heavily tonight. Look at that red arrow!

Chris Christie has to finish eating, Marco Rubio has to chug a liter or so of water,
Jeb Bush has to wait for his mom to finish a phone harangue, Donald Trump has to get the final touches on his scalp-squirrel, Ted Cruz has last-minute fundraising to finish, and Ben Carson has to be woken up from his nap. Some delay is inevitable…

I love that he’s talking about day trading so much. He believes he can manipulate the market - or he’s trying to sell the idea that he can to someone. Plenty of suckers out there. No question it’s going to end badly for him and anyone who associates with him.

See, this really is a new TV sport - “debates”.

This is why Bernie is losing his battle on campaign finance reform - this is the media’s bread and butter.

There’s something to the first half of your comment… with things like Netflix, Hulu, and DVRs, live events have become the most important thing for generating revenue for TV networks. That, combined with new competition, is why ESPN has been willing to pay huge amounts for the broadcast rights to most major sporting events.

That said, I don’t think it matters much with respect to campaign finance reform - I can’t imagine that political commercials make much of a difference any more. Especially since people have found ways to circumvent them for everything but live events.

On that topic, Mrs. Fish asked me what it was that was “so bad” about Obamacare that everyone was complaining about it. I basically told her that it was because a Democrat pushed it through.

Makes you wonder where we’d be on universal health care if Bill Clinton would have agreed to Orin Hatch’s plan in the mid-90s (you know, the one that became the blueprint for Romneycare, which became the blueprint for Obamacare).

The thing about EMP and “hardening the grid” is, this isn’t a new problem. There was a massive solar flare, the Carrington event, in 1859 that literally set telegraph sets on fire. Shit happens; the question is always about risk vs. reward. Is the risk of an EMP attack high enough to justify the enormous cost of hardening our infrastructure against such an attack? But, risk/reward analysis - or just plain goddamn thinking at all - appears not to be in the Republicans’ wheelhouse.

“Note how many colleagues and former associates ‘loathe’ him. A Bush alumnus told the New York Times’ Frank Bruni, ‘Why do people take such an instant dislike to Ted Cruz? It just saves time.’ Former Senate Majority leader Bob Dole says, ‘Nobody likes him,’ while Rep. Peter King sees ‘malice.’” Cytowic wrote. “According to The Washington Post, screenwriter Craig Mazin, Cruz’s former Princeton roommate, has called him a ‘huge asshole,’ and ‘creepy.’ He’s Tweeted, ‘Getting emails blaming me for not smothering Ted Cruz in his sleep in 1988.’ The distaste for Cruz even extends beyond the US: Germans say Backpfeifengesicht, meaning a face in need of a good punch.”

Before Iowa, they’re generally congenial because the candidates have an almost unwritten agreement not to draw blood from each other for fear that the other will jam a dagger in their belly.

After Iowa, the long knives come out and the bloodletting truly begins.

China supports and depends on North Korea to control the border between North Korea and China; to keep North Koreans from flooding into China.
