Former Mexican Pres. Calderon: “Mexico Won’t Pay a Cent for Trump’s Stupid Wall”

Not gonna happen
Politics • Views: 36,805

One of Donald Trump’s frequent talking points is that he’ll build a “big, beautiful wall” along the entire US border with Mexico, to stop “rapists and criminals and drug dealers” from coming into the country. And when asked how he intends to pay for such an absurdly gigantic project, he says don’t worry — Mexico is going to pay for it.

Lately in his stump speeches, Trump has taken to asking the crowd, “Who’s going to pay for the wall?” And the right wing audience shouts in response, “MEXICO!”

Well, in an interview with CNBC over the weekend, former Mexican President Felipe Calderon minced no words expressing his opinion about this bigoted, ridiculous idea: Mexico ‘won’t pay single cent for Trump’s stupid wall.’

“Mexican people, we are not going to pay any single cent for such a stupid wall! And it’s going to be completely useless,” Calderon said.

“The first loser of such a policy would be the United States,” he said. “If this guy pretends that closing the borders to anywhere either for trade (or) for people is going to provide prosperity to the United States, he is completely crazy.”

[…]

Calderon questioned the caliber of candidates like Trump, who has offended large sections of the population , including Muslims by calling for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S., as well as attracting a large following during his presidential bid.

“It is incredible that a quite admirable society like the American society could produce such kind of candidates,” Calderon said. “I cannot understand that. No offense, no offense to America. So Donald Trump … is ambitious but not exactly very well-informed man, I don’t want to say ignorant, but he is not very well informed.”

But, but, but…Trump makes yooooge deals with everybody better than anybody else!

Extra fun fact: On Meet The Press yesterday, Trump apparently indicated he was willing to decapitate captured suspected Islamist militants.

If it were practical to build a wall around Trump, I could see myself helping to pay for that.

Making friends and influencing people. Trump does it bigger and better than everyone. It’s yuge.

The consequences? Even yooger.

Mexico isn’t going to stand for his BS, and they’re certainly not going to pay for the wall Trump wants (and Trump knows the US can’t afford the wall either, not without massive cuts or hikes elsewhere).

But Mexico has to love the fact that Trump dumps on them, even as Trump’s clothing line (from which he derives a profit) is made in Mexico instead of the US because clothing manufacturing is cheaper in Mexico (and China) than in the US. There’s that Trump values again - his profits above all else.

Trump has said that as a condition for “Making America Great Again!” US workers have to be paid the same as Mexican and Chinese workers.

re: #2 Kragar

Priorities.

The Michigan legislature can’t be bothered to hold hearings, and Gov. Snyder can’t be bothered to show for US Congressional hearings on same.

Meanwhile, every new day results in more bad news for Flint, and the costs will only skyrocket from here. All because Snyder’s emergency managers (who had total control over fiscal matters in Flint) decided it was cheaper to switch to a new water source being developed, and to use the Flint River in the interim, even as the experts warned of the consequences, and did nothing.

Yet there’s emails showing that staying on Detroit water would have been 20% cheaper than the supposedly cheaper new water source. So we’re playing on GOP math - where switching to a less-safe water source is cheaper (it isn’t) and the consequences are minor - as they were saying for months on end even as Flint residents’ health worsened dramatically (they’re dire - including a death toll several times larger than Benghazi), and the cost may be well north of $1 billion.

All to save a few bucks. A couple hundred bucks a day. That’s what they were supposedly hoping to save. Instead, the GOP ruined Flint. They broke it. Fatally.

People are dead because of the GOP there, and the GOP is directly and proximately responsible. But for the water switch, this would not have happened.

Moreover, the same GOP than wants to blame the EPA for not flagging events sooner wants to gut EPA oversight, funding, and the rules protecting clean water and air altogether.

They want to weaken the very rules that are meant to keep us safe.

Heck, GM stopped using Flint River water because it was corroding engine parts. Now imagine drinking that stuff for months even as the GOP Governor and his emergency managers were saying all was well. It wasn’t. They deserve their own circle of Hell for what they’ve done.

Thing is, Robespierre fancied himself a very moral man, whose high standards would usher in a new age. He’d recoil in horror from a vulgarian like Trump.

And then, of course, he’d call for a tumbril.

It’s really rather remarkable that we’re even still talking about such a patently absurd claim as having a poor country pay for a rich country to have a two-thousand-mile fortification because the rich country kinda feels like it.

Trump has said that as a condition for “Making America Great Again!” US workers have to be paid the same as Mexican and Chinese workers.

I read last year that “Mexico’s automaking wages now are lower than pay in China but higher than Mexico’s minimum of $4.50 per day.” The article says some Japanese automakers were paying $6 - $10 per day, and others, like Volkswagen, pay more than double that.

So if I’m willing to work for say, at best, around $15 - $25 per day, then I can make America great again? Yippee! Where do I sign up??

I’m still waiting for Milo say that Beyoncé has “thunder thighs” unlike dainty white ballerinas.

Freepers, channeling World Nut Daily:

I did not know who the half time singer was. All that I noticed was she has fat thighs and and a fat butt. She looked awful in that slut suit.

Much more of their usual hooting, screeching, and flinging of feces at link.

WND itself sees the spectacle as a Democrat plot:

The NFL’s Super Bowl 50 halftime show was embedded with an array of political messages hiding in plain view. From the rainbow theme to the Black Panther suits worn by Beyonce’s dancers, the show was meant to celebrate a social platform that took its cues from the Democratic Party in a key presidential election year.

One freeper has spotted evidence of yet more collusion and conspiracy:

Sponsored by Turkish Airlines too.
Has anyone else noticed the NCAA college football championship logo looks like an Al jazzira logo?

Yeah I’d love to see a ban on advertising for prescription medicines during the Super Bowl. Actually I’d like to see a ban on that PERIOD but hey, why not start small?

I don’t know when advertising prescription drugs became a Thing but that shit has to stop.

They want to turn Mexico into East Berlin; a place that walls its people in.

In 1975, I passed through both the fence separating East Germany from West Germany, AND through the famous Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin (and back out again). Coming from the West, there was first a very tall fence with armed guard towers, then a long open space, then double lines of ‘tank trippers’ and more fence. That was to keep the East Germans IN, though of course the Official Story was that it was to keep the Capitalist Imperialist Running Dogs And Their Craven Lackeys out.

Having seen someone deal with opioid constipation as part of pain management, I know how awful that condition is, but I hate the drug commercials with a passion.

Consider how the drug companies have spent on advertising to the public, which is money not going to r&d. Or the money spent trying to convince doctors to use one med over another, even though the outcomes are the same (or occasionally worse).

But the IBS commercial with the walking small intestine was even worse. Shitty even.

The crazy thing was when they had ads for drugs without every saying what they were for, but telling you to ask your doctor if it was right for YOU!

“So, Doc - is Premarin right for me?”

“Well, it’s for peri-and post-menopausal women, and you’re a guy, so, no. But if you’re game, I’ll write the ‘scrip!”

I suspect Trump knows he can’t get Mexico to pay for the wall. But he knows his followers LOVE the thought, so he says it.

He doesn’t care if the wall gets built, all he cares about is getting elected.

Am I the only here of the right age/geography that “fish tacos” was a euphemism for something was wasn’t either fish or tacos?

The New Mexico Attorney General’s Office says there doesn’t appear to be any pattern of fraud by 10 nonprofits that provided behavioral health services to needy New Mexicans.

Attorney Hector Balderas announced the findings in a letter delivered Monday to state lawmakers.

Balderas said some regulatory violations were uncovered. Those are being forwarded to the Human Services Department for possible administrative action.

Balderas’ office is continuing to review two remaining providers. His office previously found no fraud but overpayment issues with three others.

The initial audit that raised allegations of fraud and abuse in 2013 alleged $36 million in state Medicaid funding was mishandled by the providers. That prompted Republican Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration to freeze Medicaid payments to the providers while the attorney general’s office launched an inquiry.

Many mental health providers went out of business. Martinez is literally driving New Mexico crazy. I think Balderas is going for her job.

I think Rubio’s baja grill might have a fish burrito but IMO, putting fish in a burrito would end up with the fish turning to mush.

I would argue that the drug companies wouldn’t advertise if it didn’t work. I also don’t think the marketing budget takes money away from R&D. Drug companies have a tremendous incentive to come up with a new drug, even if it’s for the same condition the one that’s about to go off patent is for. I would also make the argument that marketing to patients actually informs and empowers them. A patient that wants something to treat their problem is going to participate in the treatment regime better than one who just eats a bunch of pills when they feel like it.

There is a place in OBX NC that has a Gamefish Burrito and makes it work. Not soggy or anything. Can’t think of the place off the top of my head right now.

guess it would depend on the fish used. I could see it working with catfish nuggets or even tuna/wahoo but not the fish they usually use in tacos that tends to be lighter.

Drug companies also spend a lot of money on competitive intelligence, to the delight of a guy I know. Sometimes he has simultaneous contracts for one company to spy on another, and vice versa.

That’s one of the issues with profit in drugmaking. The other is the way it skews what gets made. We need a bunch of new antibiotics before we end up back in the pre-WWII era, where a simple bacterial infection can kill you, but what drug company would plow hundreds of millions into the research and development for drugs that will be used as sparingly as possible to preserve their efficacy? Instead, we get the ‘daily’ form of Cialis that allows you to be ‘ready when the moment’s right’. Or a slightly different form of a patented drug that preserves patent protection and eeks out a miniscule benefit in a clinical trial.

OTOH, without profit, who would undertake the expense and risk of drug development?

Doesn’t mean it takes money away from R&D. You can’t do business without both. WIthout products, you have nothing to sell. Without marketing, you have nobody to sell it to.

I do smoked-salmon empanadas. Use jack, cream cheese, and sour cream about equally, with a little mayo. Toss on a bit of minced jalapeño and capers, maybe some strips of roasted sweet pepper. Sauté golden on each side in butter. Wheat tortillas better than corn for this, and lightly smoked salmon better than the heavily smoked.

Sorry, that’s bullshit. Drug companies need to advertise to compete with other drug companies who advertise. If drug ads were outlawed it’s not like demand for drugs would go away. Remember, you still have a nation full of doctors telling patients what drugs they ought to take. That’s all the advertising they need as far as interacting with the general public is concerned.
