Well, that was fun. On the way out the door after my work shift, my coworker asked if I’d join him on the first leg of his security walk since it was on the way to the parking garage. So I agreed, and we chose to use the service elevator since it was a shorter route than the regular elevators. But apparently nobody told me it was on the fritz, so I just spent the better part of an hour waiting for our Head of Engineering to come in hours after he’d left work to get us out.

Oh well, thank Dog today’s my day off. Perhaps by tomorrow, something else will have come up and people will have forgotten…but knowing my luck, they won’t.

“My lyrics are there for entertainment purposes only—not to be taken internally. Some of them are truly stupid, some are slightly less stupid and a few of them are sort of funny. Apart from the snide political stuff, which I enjoy writing, the rest of the lyrics wouldn’t exist at all if it weren’t for the fact that we live in a society where instrumental music is irrelevant—so if a guy expects to earn a living by providing musical entertainment for folks in the U.S.A., he’d better figure out how to do something with a human voice plopped on it.”

FWIW, elevator doors are designed to be able to be pulled open, should the elevator become stuck.

You just grab the edge of the middle seam of the door and pull it open in the direction it normally opens.

Once got stuck in a parking garage elevator in Miami, and pulled the doors open and let the others out.

Piece of cake, the elevator floor was only approx 1’ foot above the ground floor.

No big deal, learned that from a longtime friend who was an elevator contractor.

Tonight I discover that television network Discovery Canada has a reality-TV series called “Jade Fever”, which is about a group of people trying to get rich by finding Jade which they will then sell to Chinese investors.

One of the characters is “Scrappy Larry”, and here is his bio:

“It’s an environmental disaster up here… what difference does it make if I add to it?!”

Scrappy Larry is an environmentalist’s worst nightmare—thank god there are none in Jade City!

Larry’s scrapyard is full of broken-down gear, discarded cars, wild horses and everything is for sale for the right price! As “Old Scrappy” constantly brings in new “treasure”, he is determined to unload more of it on his best customer, Robin. But he’ll have to do it despite being a major pain-in-the-ass to Claudia.

And then people wonder why things like the poisoning in Flint goes on right under our noses.

Supposedly Democratic nominee Henry Hewes’ campaign has been running anti-abortion ads over and over on WMUR (NH) showing dismembered fetuses. It’s disgusting. The station explains that by law there is nothing they can do about it. Hewes seems more in line with Rand Paul (I discovered after a quick look at his positions). But this clearly all about his pro-life agenda.

Ha, good one. They always make it all sinister though like OBAMA’S TRYING TO CHANGE THIS COUNTRY TO FIT HIS IMAGE or some dumb crap like that. Well they’re trying to change it too. Rubio owes his Senate career to the fact that Florida Republican primary voters preferred having a Senator that would hate on Obama than actually get stuff done like Charlie Crist.

31 year old woman has a heart attack, you are never too young or fit.

Six months ago, 31-year-old Jessica Kennington (left) felt like she had the flu. The fit Harlem resident noticed a tightness in her chest while walking to her job as a program manager at a Manhattan hospital.

Ten days later, that tightness turned into an inability to catch her breath, coupled with pain across her chest, the left side of her arm and up into her jaw. So she went to the hospital, where tests revealed what she still can’t believe: She had been having a heart attack for 10 days.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Again we’re dealing with coastal flooding this morning, so here’s a few shots:

The top photo is from the north side of Hoboken Terminal, and this is apparently where some of the water that ends up at the tracks is coming from - drainage pipes that would normally send water out to the river is letting it into the track areas.

The partial solution involves installing backflow preventers, to keep the water from backing up into the track areas, but so far I haven’t heard or seen any plans to secure the terminal area from flooding. But every time it floods, it causes damage to the infrastructure - stuff you can’t ordinarily see and will have lasting effects with cables/signals and electrical systems down the line.

We got about 1.5 inches here in Columbus. Worst part about it is there is a thin coating of ice under it because it was warm late yesterday so as the snow fell it melted until it got cold enough over night for the snow to stick.

So, you’re sure that there will be commercials with poisoned kids in it…or will it be images of Hillary in Flint Michigan talking to the people of Flint about how bad Republican political leadership got them to this point?

I have no problem with criticism of Clinton, she isn’t perfect, but this seems to be a bit early. Let’s see if there are in fact commercials and then criticize them.

Ahh…politics.

Maybe Trump was using Russian soldiers because he was afraid of using American soldiers in his ads.

Wouldn’t it be just perfect if Cruz was revealed to be in a sexual scandal? I mean considering that Rage Furby thinks everyone he hates is having gay affairs. It would be just perfect if Cruz was revealed to be using Grinder or something like that. Honestly extra martial affairs by politicians don’t bother me. I’m not their spouse or child and as long as it doesn’t impact their ability to do the job, it shouldn’t be the public’s concern. I only get annoyed when it’s a blatant hypocrite like David Vitter or Newt Gingrich.

Apparently Dixville Notch was a fabrication so that employees of a resort up there would have a place to vote; also, or moreso, it was a publicity stunt for the resort from the 1950s.

there are actually three very little towns that went at midnight. It pretty much has to be tiny places because the law says that you can close your polls early only if you are certain everyone who wants to vote can. So basically it is only going to happen in a place with no more than a couple dozen eligible voters.

And since new hampshire does same day registration that is basically anyone of voting age.

How would you like to be the one guy from dixville notch who wants to vote but legitimately can’t make it at midnight. I wonder if the neighbors would take it in stride or if everyone would be pissed at you.

So has anybody found out what conservatives are really upset about by Beyonce’s halftime performance? At first it seems like they’re upset about the clothing, but I’ve never seen a historical photo of a black panther wearing fishnet stockings, leather, and short shorts. Just had someone tell me I needed to look past that. Ok, I looked past that and all I see are performers with black skin and natural hair. Is that really the issue? Am I missing anything? Granted, I didn’t watch the performance so maybe there is something else (I really doubt that, though) or are we just dealing with your typical republican/conservative racism?

I’ve heard her new song that she played at the SB is quite critical of the police but you know what, so what. She’s entitled to her opinion. I think we are dealing with typical wingnut racism though. And here’s why. The CSA flag has been present in Southern rock music and the CSA killed a hell of a lot more Americans than the Black Panthers did. I’m not seeing the Black Panther connection really either. Beyonce and the other women’s outfits were way too erotic to be that. but then again they freaked out over a black guy wearing a beret and trenchcoat in Philly in 2012 and isnisted it was the Black Panthers intimidating Romney voters for Obama when in reality I imagine Obama is too moderate or even conservative for the Black Panthers.

Something not touched on in our SportPolitics media shows:

Bonds Follow Bank of Japan Into Negative Territory

[…]

On Tuesday, the yield on Japanese 10-year bonds, the benchmark of government borrowing, dropped to zero for the first time. They quickly fell into negative territory, meaning some investors were buying bonds despite knowing that if they held them until maturity, they would come away with less money than they paid.

And on top of that, a strong yen dragged Japanese stocks down more than 5 percent in the worst trading day this year.

[…]

Trump sort has brought up Japanese currency, but only with his tarring and feathering of the foreigner that is part of his schtick.

This friend of mine did respond about looking past. Apparently now it’s about the hats and maybe (they didn’t show it on TV) they did a “black fist bump.” I rolled my eyes and did not respond to that. These people.

Remember, it’s not just military, it’s cops and fire, too. Look at the first responders on 9/11. Lip service. Cops deserve our respect, as they, too, have a suck ass job. But they need to police their own and the politicians and unions need to stop giving free reign to the miscreants. They are no better than their worst officer, because that worst officer gives them all a black eye.

It’s all lip service, no matter whom they are referring to. There’s no real support anywhere.

Right. I guess ultimately I’m tired of lip service and no real action. The same people who constantly bitch about the homeless in our city ignore that a large number of those people are in fact veterans. I’d rather have less in your face parading of vets, cops, and fire fighters and more actually doing something.

Saw it put this way by a football fan acquaintance of mine but it’s funny to hear from the people constantly bitching about how uptight everyone is nowadays are the first to bitch when they’re offended.

South Carolina is even more idiotic than most primaries, as the primaries don’t even take place on the same day. The Republican primary is 2/20; Dem 2/27. (And it’s an open primary state—go figure.) Discussing the important issues with Christie.

This is why the media sucks.

Christie vetoed a child lead prevention bill, even as the scope of the Flint water crisis was becoming even more dire. It’s as though media outlets don’t care and want to stick to their narratives, and not upset the GOP candidates by exposing their complete and utter lack of compassion or empathy, or knowledge/understanding of domestic/foreign events.

They want to maintain access, and that trumps challenging candidates to express views that actually matter.

Because all the states want to do things their way. The way things are done now, you get states like IA and NH acting as bellweathers even though they’re nothing like a median state demographically.

And they haven’t exactly been on the ball in predicting winners either.

But small states don’t want to lose their clout by pooling together on a “Super Tuesday” type event. They want to keep the candidates from focusing all their time/effort on the big population states.

It’s why I had wished Rudy did better in FL when he ran - because it would have exposed the nonsense of IA/NH by going to a big population state rather than dealing with states that are outliers demographically (and since he didn’t win, the IA/NH proponents get to keep squawking).

There’s a pretty good article over at Vox explaining some of the whacked-out notions held by sovereign citizens. It shows some written examples and references tweets by @jjmacnab as well as info from the SPLC.

[Cue the Twilight Zone music…]

Why some far-right extremists think red ink can force the government to give them millions

For decades, in courthouses and government offices all across the US, people have been filing bizarrely worded pseudo-legal documents filled with strange symbols, secret coded language, and even bloody fingerprints in an effort to unlock secret bank accounts set up for them by the evil impostor government that runs this country. […]

As explained by the Southern Poverty Law Center, they believe the government creates a secret alternate identity for each American at birth and sets up a secret US Treasury account — sort of like a corporate “trust” — under that alternate identity. The US government funds these “corporate shell” accounts to the tune of hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars.

Because the US no longer uses the gold standard, it instead uses these accounts as collateral to back up its currency. The money is said to represent each citizen’s future earning potential. The sovereign citizens thus believe the government has “pledged its citizenry as collateral, by selling their future earning capabilities to foreign investors, effectively enslaving all Americans,” according to the SPLC. […]

It gets weirder—things like red ink being very important—I’m not kidding.

These aren’t mentally stable people.

The current U.S. population is approximately 320 million people. Columbus Dispatch - Franklin Township man takes his life outside Statehouse

A Franklin Township man killed himself outside the front door of the Statehouse Downtown on Monday evening.

Authorities were called just after 6 p.m. to a shooting, which occurred up the steps and at the entrance to the Statehouse, on the S. High Street side.

MarShawn M. McCarrel II, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Craig Cvetan of the State Highway Patrol.

McCarrel II, 23, lived on Eastbrook Drive North in Franklin Township. He was not employed by the state, Cvetan said.

“We don’t have any evidence to know the reason why he did it,” Cvetan said.

Posted on his Facebook page shortly after 3 p.m., however, was “My demons won today. I’m sorry.”

No one witnessed McCarrel shoot himself. He was seen on the Statehouse grounds just moments before the gunshot, Cvetan said.

I could but I’m conflicted about doing that. For one thing it’s not my photograph, and slapping my handle on it is just kind of rude in my opinion. All I did was slap on some topical and very obvious text. That’s kind of why I was poking at BoingBoing in jest when they stole that stupid NR covershop, but at the same time I was kind of annoyed, because I’m conflicted.

I figure it’s just an organic part of the internet. I might put my name on more of my stuff if I gave a shit about my number of Twitter followers or crafting memes for a living.

Not on the photo, but on the wording, indicating it is Rubio being lame. Otherwise, it’s the sort of thing I’d say myself.

From a link at the Dispatch…sounds like the young man was active for some time. Sad that he must have had some very bad inner turmoil…he had so much to give.

Columbus Alive.com - Q&A: Meet one of the activists behind the local Ferguson protests

On a recent Monday night, protesters with the Ohio Student Association marched to Goodale Park after a rally at Ohio State Campus’ Oval to demonstrate their desire for change in light of the recent police-involved deaths of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Eric Garner, among others. Marching with them was Ohio Student Association field organizer MarShawn McCarrel. McCarrel has been working with the OSA to bring political power back to community members and address social justice issues through education and discussion. Though the recent events in Cleveland, Ferguson, Missouri, and New York are tragic, McCarrel believes the conversations they spawned could lead to positive change within the power structures both in Columbus and nationwide.

Christian churches close to deal to fix common date for Easter: Archbishop of Canterbury

The heads of the Christian churches are close to sealing a deal to fix the date of Easter, the Archbishop of Canterbury has revealed, ending more than a thousand years of confusion and debate.

The Most Reverend Justin Welby said the agreed date would be either the second or third Sunday of April.

He expected to make the change within 5-10 years, though he admitted that churches have been trying to agree on a date without success since the tenth century.

I don’t know what method is used to calculate Easter except that it doesn’t involve looking at a Jewish calendar.

In 325CE the Council of Nicaea established that Easter would be held on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox. From that point forward, the Easter date depended on the ecclesiastical approximation of March 21 for the vernal equinox.

Easter is delayed by 1 week if the full moon is on Sunday, which decreases the chances of it falling on the same day as the Jewish Passover. The council’s ruling is contrary to the Quartodecimans, a group of Christians who celebrated Easter on the day of the full moon, 14 days into the month.

But, who tells the religious leaders and the calendar makers?

The quick answer is this: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Passover, on the other hand, begins on the first full moon of Nisan, the first month of the Jewish lunar-based calendar.

But in reality, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

The Jewish “leap year”, which occurs seven times in a 19-year cycle, has 13 months instead of the regular year’s 12. This is so that the lunar-based Jewish year should remain aligned with the solar seasons (12 lunar months make up a total of 354 days — slightly more than 11 days short of the 365.25 day solar cycle). The added month is called “Adar I” and is inserted before the month of Adar (termed “Adar II” in leap years).

Her video (released the day before) of the same song (a video that was not played at the Super Bowl, was not broadcast on CBS, and had no part in the halftime show) quite explicitly references Katrina, Ferguson and BlackLivesMatter.

Donald Trump Will Probably Win New Hampshire

I guess we’ll know in a bit over 12 hours.

And she called him an Arab, and McCain said, no, he’s a decent family man (as if the two were mutually exclusive.)

“No, ma’am. He’s a decent family man [and] citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that’s what this campaign’s all about. He’s not [an Arab].”

I think McCain got WAY too much credit for that response.

That’s what I was getting at. The whole idea of Arab and non-Christian and good family man being mutually exclusive.

No. They poison everything and everybody they can. Then they die.

re: #257 Eclectic Cyborg

Simple math exposes these idiots for what they are.

The current U.S. population is approximately 320 million people. Let’s go with the low end of the scale for these supposed “accounts” and say there is $100 000 in each. That means the accounts, in total, would contain 32 TRILLION DOLLARS. That’s more wealth than I believe has existed in the ENTIRE HISTORY OF THIS PLANET and remember, that’s the LOW end of the scale for this conspiracy theory. So some of these nutjobs are playing with even more extreme numbers!

Um… you’ve misplaced some decimal points.

The total net worth of all Americans added together is approximately 60 trillion dollars. Half of that, 30 trillion, is owned by the top 1%.

$20 T is owned by the top 1/10 of 1%.

$1.5 T is owned by the Forbes 400.

re: #362 Ziggy_TARDIS

Here’s the problem gun nuts don’t think about. Sure its exciting to be able to strap your dick substitute on and swagger around with it so everyone can see how big and manly it is. But the feeling starts to fade after awhile. You’ve been fantasizing about how you are going to whip it out and save the day when a bad guy with a gun shows up, but it keeps not happening, and you get frustrated. No-one’s impressed by your penis substitute on your hip any more. So the day comes when your damned neighbor’s puppy just won’t stop yapping, and you finally decide you are going to do something about it, and by gawd, you have just the thing for it! But your neighbors are getting frustrated that they haven’t been able to use their metal dicks either, and there you are, a bad guy with a gun, just what they’ve been waiting for! So a dispute about a yappy dog turns into a gun battle.

re: #310 The Vicious Babushka

The Jewish “leap year”, which occurs seven times in a 19-year cycle, has 13 months instead of the regular year’s 12. This is so that the lunar-based Jewish year should remain aligned with the solar seasons (12 lunar months make up a total of 354 days — slightly more than 11 days short of the 365.25 day solar cycle). The added month is called “Adar I” and is inserted before the month of Adar (termed “Adar II” in leap years).

For those of us who only speak English… it’s having two Februarys. Because if you have to add an extra month, don’t we all want an extra February?

True, but since Palin, who really got the othering going, was his chosen VP, he’s just as responsible (and I don’t care if she wasn’t who he wanted—he named her, he ran with her, he chose her.)
