Republicans, yes. Democrats have Nevada next week and South Carolina a week after that.
Medal placements in NH:
Gold - Trump
Silver - Kasich
Bronze - Cruz
Iron - Jeb!
Stone - Rubio
Wood - Christie
Woven Reeds - Fiorina
… and last and not least…
A New Suit of Clothes - Carson
What sticks out to me is something I read over at 538, namely that 64% of NH Dems said they’d be happy with Hillary being the nominee and 78% said the same of Bernie. So even with her loss tonight, she still enjoys a strong level of support amongst Dem voters.

I’m seeing that Trump is at about 33% yet he’s apparently winning 9 or 10 out of 23 delegates. Isn’t this supposed to be proportional? Why is he getting extra delegates? Shouldn’t he be at 7 or 8?
Also, this result gives us the best opportunity for an open convention. There needs to be 3-5 viable candidates through Super Tuesday for it to happen. Of course, we also need someone other than Trump or Cruz to win the next two contests

There’s a 10% threshold for delegates, and all delegates that don’t get awarded to other candidates go to the winner. So the 15% or so of voters who supported Christie, Fiorina, Carson, and the ballot mice effectively give Trump more delegates.

You have to get 10% of the vote to qualify for delegates, so the winners will get a higher percentage of the delegates than their vote percentage.

But in a 4 or 5 man race? Fuck if I know what’ll happen. But I’ll throw this out there: if Trump or Cruz win the nomination without a majority (or close to a majority) in any state, there’s a real chance of a protest candidate gaining steam

I’m in Mavs country, so I don’t know enough about Popovich’s political leanings.
I seem to recall Popovich supporting John Edwards in 2004. NBA coaches even NBA white ones are pretty liberal. Phil Jackson, George Karl come to mind. Pop is a great coach. I am not a Spurs fan but I don’t see how he’s not behind Red Auerbach as the best HC ever. Yeah I have him higher than Phil because of how he gets the most of what he’s got. He’s never had someone like Kobe or MJ to work with.

Yes, but regardless of what those people want, they can’t perform miracles. If the GOP voters select Trump or Cruz, then the nominee will be Trump or Cruz.
Trump or Cruz eliminates the other and the GOP will send someone out to stab the wounded.
In head to head match ups vs. Hillary and Bernie @marcorubio was the GOP’s strongest polling candidate. His campaign is dead now. LOL!

Maybe so. But I don’t see the Obama analogue on the Right. Now, if you’re saying that the leftist movements like BLM and OWS are divisive, then I definitely agree. If they aren’t they aren’t doing it right.
But I’m one of those who wish for more but understand the realities of our system. I’m hesitantly happy for what has been achieved and believe we build from there.
re: #162 EPR-radar
That’s how I see it as well. If so, we’ll have the bizarre spectacle of the GOP establishment playing kingmaker between two alternatives they despise: Trump and Cruz.
The odds for a GOP convention floor fight seem to be improving, although they are still low.
Very; if no establishment candidate can win a major primary and its Trump v. Cruz, one of them will get a majority of the delegates.

If the delegate count from the primaries between Trump and Cruz is close, then the super delegates under the control of the GOP establishment could end up being decisive. That could provide many years worth of entertainment in just a few days.

i) Are there any primaries coming soon where Bernie has any chance of winning or coming close? Most of the upcoming ones seem heavily favouring Hillary.
ii) Are there any primaries coming soonish that Trump is not leading in the polls?

Keep an eye on the margin in Nevada Saturday after next.
On March 1, Vermont votes and will almost certainly give him another win. Colorado and Minnesota hold caucuses where he just might have a chance. But other than that, he’s down by 25+ in South Carolina, Texas, Arkansas, Georgia…

Bloomberg threw a lavish party here Saturday night to reveal the results of the final Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll, which included some disappointing results for the company’s founder, Michael Bloomberg.
As servers at the makeshift Bloomberg TV studio inside the Marriott hotel passed trays of canapes and flutes of champagne to journalists and political operatives, the results were revealed: The man footing the bill for the event had a higher unfavorability rating compared with every other candidate, Democrat and Republican, with two exceptions: Jeb Bush and Sarah Palin

But we are weird here in California. Never part of the Old South, never really much of the old Yankee coalition either (though California was admitted as a free state.)
I think it has much to do with our Spanish/Mexican heritage, then with the fact that most of us English speakers here migrated in the 20th century from all over.
So in a sense the politics here today is very much about California, and California’s rapid growth to being so dominant of an economy, than it is about carrying water for political parties rooted in the old cultural battles back East.

It’s interesting. When I was a kid. I had a GOP Congressman, Tom Davis. Anyone remember him? Actually a fairly reasonable guy even though he is a GOP loyalist through and through but he had a pretty pro-choice record, never bashed gays, or acted like an asshole about guns. Honestly the guy could have been a really smart candidate statewide if the GOP here wasn’t too busy with guys like McConnell, Cuccinnelli, and the other so-con whackjobs. John Warner was surprisingly socially liberal for a Virginia Republican too. Gets major brownie points from me for 1) opposing Bork’s nomination to the USSC and 2) opposing North’s run for the Senate in 1994. A real decent guy whose retirement I hope has gone well.

The reactionary religious right really has brought to the Republican party the idea that fighting over dogma ought to be down to the death.
In my youth, the GOP was much more gregarious and less ideological. It was the party of successful people, and leftovers from the old pre-FDR Republican party of days gone by (Teddy R. and such.)
Now, if you listen to Trump or Cruz or Rubio - the GOP is about violent retribution and fierce purity.

Fair enough, we are different. And most of the republicans that run statewide run on a traditional social conservative platform (which I’ve always had a problem with, even when I voted republican in my youth).
There’s also the Oregon Senator that came out in support of gay marriage. Granted it was partly because his son came out, but it’s better than a public disowning…
My point, I guess, is that there are some still out there. But they are a distinct minority within the party. When it comes to presidential politics, I’m not sure the system would allow any of them to be viable. Maybe if they could win/do well in New Hampshire and Nevada?

Bernie is the real inheritor of MLK’s legacy.
Is feeling the Bern similar to a splitting migraine?
I don’t mind happy Bernie supporters. I just have a problem with Bernie supporters refusing to support Clinton, acting like there’s no difference between her and the Republicans, and being sexist and or condescending. If you really think Sanders is the best choice, that’s your choice. I just disagree.

Okay what the fuck. Listen like Bernie all you want but Bernie isn’t from a group of people who were second class citizens in this country for a long time and slaves. That’s the kind of shit that really turns me off and it’s why Bernie isn’t exactly flavor of the month with African-Americans.
The more I think about it, the more I like the nickname for the GOP as “The Party of Violent Retribution”.
. @AngryBlackLady 22 year old Bernie Bros need to google “1972 George McGovern” and re-read as necessary.
— Annemarie Dickey (@Scottishlizard1) February 10, 2016
It’s either that, or “Party of God”, but the latter is taken…
Next Democratic debate is this Thursday on PBS at 9 pm est. The next Republican debate is Saturday on CBS.

It is but not in English form.
re: #78 Charles Johnson
Just a reminder that John Kasich is every bit as radical as any of the other GOP candidates, on the issues that really matter. He’s no moderate, and we need to fight against him just as much as we fight against Donald Trump.
As an Ohioan that has had to put with him for a long time…this is true.
But I will say, if misfortune occurs and there becomes a Cruz presidency, I will say we would have been better off with Kasich.
Trump…does anyone really now what he stands for yet. The other day he was going on about how no American should end up dying in the streets because of healthcare. I still do not know what a Trump presidency would be. Crazy for sure, but what way? He seems to be playing everyone.

He stands for medieval torture and executions, apparently.

But not in the street.
Our disappointment tonight is not on you. It’s on me. I did not do well on Saturday night. So listen to this, that will never happen again.

Sticking with my prediction: Trump will win no caucuses or primaries, and will run behind Ron Paul 2012 in IA and NH.

Pretty much a given that Kristol would get it wrong. It’s just a matter of how wrong.
Might as well ask one of those online fortune tellers who will win.
re: #224 Big Beautiful Door
Something I haven’t heard anyone mention tonight. A lot was made of the fact that Trump underperformed the polls in Iowa, and there was hopeful speculation that a lot of his apparent support would simply evaporate. Well tonight, Trump overperformed the polls; not a single recent poll had him as high as he is currently running, 35%. Very bad news for the GOPe.
Extremely few people of color in these two events.
Next.

Kristol’s different.
He is always wrong. How is that statistically possible? At least a fortune teller would be right sometimes.

Or was that Dick Morris?

Might’ve been Morris. I’m pretty sure Morris was the one who predicted a Romney landslide on Election Night. That was the third most beautiful thing that night, following Obama’s re-election and Karl Rove’s breakdown on Fox News.

Yeah Irving of I want to say the Weekly Standard’s fame. Daddy started out as a Trotskyist but moved to the right in the Nixon years.
re: #249 HappyWarrior
When guys like John Warner retired from politics it was the end of the reasonable GOP. He may have been the last of the true moderates.

I think the end came when the rush came to ID as conservative rather than as Republican.
I feel happy to say that I’ve accomplished one of my lifelong dreams and that was to have a comprehensive family tree. This project will never be totally finished of course and will be something I’ll want to pass on to my descendants but I’m proud to say that I’ve gotten a lot of accomplished and have even gotten into contact with a European cousin. Next step is to learn more about the places where they came from and eventually to visit all of them.

Indeed, conservative purity tests. But I think what it was that being conservative meant being a complete dick.

Conservative used to mean being careful and contemplative, now it means being radical and reactionary.

That’s awesome. I have decently knowledge of two of my four main lines (I am 1/2 Irish, 1/4 English and 1/4 Swiss). The Swiss and English lines I have plenty of info on, the Irish not so much.

I’d like him to pick the Cleveland Browns for last place as a damn sure thing bet…which they many times come close to being.
They might actually win their division.

Right, conservative stopped being about that and started being more about that. When Dick Lugar got purged, you knew it was down hill from there.
From checking the website, I gather that National Racists Online haz a sad.

Now, now. Okay let’s compromise as AFC North fans, he can pick the Bengals and Ravens to finish in first for the next decade and the AFC North s true rivalry can return.

Yeah the Irish is one of my sides I’m limited on information from in part because Iris records are so limited and my Irish relations came pretty early by Irish standards. The last person I can document as being born in Ireland whom I’m directly descended from was born in the early 1850’s and came here as a kid. The German records holy shit. It does help though that a Swiss guy with my last name and a perhaps very distant cousin is doing alot of research on our name though. There’s a surprising amount of Slovak records from my great grandparents native village but teh catch there is some records record the names in Latin, some in Hungarian, and some in Slovak or Rusyn, and it’s even more crazy since we do a ton of renaming in that culture. The Slovene records are non-existent but I did contact their archives and they gave me a copy of my great grandparents’ records along with their siblings. I’m actually amazed how many youngest sons and daughters I’m descended from. I mean I’m only 28 but my youngest great grandparent was born in the late 1890;s. I mean I’m not quite President John Tyler’s grandsons whose grandpa was born in 1790 and those guys are still alive.
re: #313 HappyWarrior
So many Irish records were destroyed, in part thanks to the English.

Heh I know. To be fair though, I really think hiring Jackson was a great move for you guys and despite the rivalry I hope he does well. Browns fans are some of the most loyal in teh league and they deserve better.

I’m trying to remember who the last pro choice republican presidential candidate was. I want to say there was one in 2000, but I don’t remember who.
Nope. Gotta go back beyond GWB. That’s what made me despise him. I heard him say one thing to a group on Monday and the exact opposite to a different group the next day.
re: #314 freetoken

Yeah there was one during the Irish Civil War too. It sucks because I really really want to find out exactly where in Ireland my family was from. I do know some of the counties though. A couple in Ulster and a couple in Connemara.

On a scale of “FEEL THE BERN” to “Planned Parenthood is the reason we lost Iowa”, I’m going to say four pints of Ben and Jerry’s and a bong left over from the last time Phish played town.
Or a 15 then? :-)
The burning of the 1890 census records is a real drag too. I’ve been trying to figure out information on siblings of my great grandmother. It’s a sad story really. Only she and her two brothers lived past childhood and the two brothers were the only ones who made it past 50. I always felt so sad for my grandmother losing a mother that young but I also think that played a big role in why she was such a genuinely loving person to all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
