Texas Researchers Who Confirmed Planned Parenthood Cuts Harm Women Are Now Under Attack

The Republican Party’s relentless war on women’s rights
Politics • Views: 33,631

Two researchers for the Texas Health and Human Services agency are finding out what Republicans do when they encounter scientific studies that contradict right wing orthodoxy — they attack and smear the people who conducted the study.

Rick Allgeyer, director of research for more than 20 years, and program specialist Imelda Flores-Vazquez are under fire from anti-choice fanatics and may be disciplined by the agency, because they published a study in the highly-respected New England Journal of Medicine confirming that cuts to Planned Parenthood lead to restricted access to women’s health care, especially for disadvantaged women.

Powerful Republican state Sen. Jane Nelson dismissed the findings as invalid, in part because the research was funded by the nonprofit Susan T. Buffet Foundation, which is a major supporter of Planned Parenthood and other abortion rights groups.

She also questions why two state health employees were among the study’s five co-authors.

“It’s one thing for an agency to provide data upon request. It’s quite another to be listed as a ‘co-author’ on a deeply flawed and highly political report,” said Nelson, an architect of Texas’ current women’s health program. “I’ve communicated strong concerns to the agency. This should not have happened, and we need to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

This really shows what’s behind the anti-Planned Parenthood agenda — and it’s certainly not concern for women’s health. These religious fanatics don’t care that they’re causing great harm to women. If facts conflict with their agenda, they’ll simply dismiss the facts out of hand and attack the researchers responsible for bringing them to light.

Planned Parenthood officials said the study showed the impact of “politically motivated” decisions.

“The truth hurts. Unfortunately for Texas officials, disliking a study doesn’t make it not true,” said Yvonne Gutierrez, executive director of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes.

Flores-Vazquez and Allgeyer collaborated on the study with University of Texas researchers who are analyzing the impact of women’s health laws passed by the Texas Legislature in recent years. School researchers say the Buffet Foundation plays no role in their work.

Abkhazia has outlawed abortion in an apparent effort to boost the population of the breakaway Georgian republic.

The ban was formally approved on February 8 when Abkhazia’s de facto leader, Raul Khajimba, signed a new health-care law that was approved by parliament on January 29. The legislation includes a full ban on pregnancy terminations from the moment of conception.

“The state recognizes the right to life of an unborn child from the moment of conception and forbids artificial pregnancy terminations,” reads the text of the new law. “In view of the equal right to life of a mother and a child, the state defends and upholds this right.”

Note that Abkhazia is a breakaway republic that is basically under Russian control.

The clerks ‘nicely’ told the couple they were an affront to God. (Via JoeMyGod) Forgive me for quoting so much but there was so much worth quoting.

Samantha Brookover stood crying in Glenville’s Gilmer County Courthouse last week, humiliated on what was meant to be a celebratory occasion. Brookover and her partner, Amanda Abramovich, wanted a marriage license. They got one — along with an earful from a deputy clerk in the office, who told them that their relationship is wrong and that God will judge them. Brookover and Abramovich had expected maybe an eye roll or some sign of disgust. They said they weren’t anticipating that they would be told they were “an abomination.”..

..”We did not attack them,” Allen said. “We did not yell at them. We were not aggressive with them. I felt I talked nicely to them.”

Brookover and Abramovich, though, say Allen huffed, took their driver’s licenses, made copies, slammed down the copies and then, for two to three minutes, yelled that what they were doing was wrong in her eyes and in God’s eyes and that no one in Gilmer County would ever marry them.

The couple had brought family members. They had the camera ready. It was supposed to be a happy day. Instead, in Brookover’s words, they were “flabbergasted and hurt and angry like you wouldn’t believe.”

Allen said she briefly and calmly told the couple what they were doing was wrong and that God would judge them, and then continued assisting them as she would other couples.

“I just told them my opinion,” she said. “I just felt led to do that. I believe God was standing with me and that’s just my religious belief.”

Asked if her words could possibly have been perceived as an attack to someone of another sexual orientation, who has been belittled because of it, Allen said, “Oh, I’m sure.”

She wouldn’t say how she would treat any future same-sex couples that arrive at the clerk’s office or if she would use the West Virginia Religious Freedom Restoration Act, if it passes in the Legislature, to argue that she shouldn’t have to give marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The legislation, House Bill 4012, could allow people to argue in court that civil rights laws don’t apply to them because of their religious beliefs.

Goff had a phone conversation with Gilmer County Clerk Jean Butcher about the incident. Butcher said she told Goff that her religious beliefs are similar to Moore’s.

“They were issued the license, and that was the main thing,” Butcher told the Gazette-Mail.

Au contraire!

The fact that there are people turning away from religion most likely is a sign that they need to work harder to get everyone saved. Evangelicals basically take it as a challenge and they need to testify and work to make you believe too. Evangelize…the root of the word means to preach and to convert.

One of the reasons they can be persistently pesky. Non-believers are a challenge and getting a convert is seen as a big deed and another plank in their guaranteed path to heave.

Part of me wishes someone would convert for them and then during the saving ceremony go “Nah just kidding, I’m still agnostic but thanks for the grub.” Really I’m so fucking sick of Evangelicals crying about how they’re persecuted because they can’t use the government to push their beliefs on us.

My gills are getting mighty dry, and it’s only been 6 weeks since my last dives (Key West for the Vandenberg and then some lobster dives).

Doing some nice cenotes and reefs in Mexico in April, though.

I’m going down in March to Riviera Maya. Doing 3 or 4 days of ocean and 1 of cenotes. Really looking forward to warm water, no dry suit and pretty fishes.

Shitgoblin indeed. There are places in the world where dissidents really do face the threat of imprisonment or assassination. It was the global norm in the not-too-distant past. Shapiro is a parasite and a fraud for even implying that he might be in the same boat.

David Fry. That’s one of his bugaboos. I’ve listened to all his live broadcasts and he’s big into right-wing fantasy land.

I guess you’ve spent time at Pennyroyal - got my dry suit card there, oldest daughter and her then-fiancé did open water there. I go down at least once a summer to freeze my ass at 30 feet.

We’re going to Puerto Morelos in April - it’s south of CUN, near Playa Del Carmen. Cheap stay in a clean place, food is good, and there’s a nice little shop and some nice reefs and wrecks. There’s about a half dozen cenotes within 45 minute - my faves are Dos Ojos and The Pit. They’re part of the same complex - you do your deep run in The Pit, 112 feet to the bottom. Dos Ojos is super clear, super shallow. Both are spectacular, but no halocline. Chac Mool is loaded with haloclines-it is great, too.
