US News • Views: 38,116

Youtube Video

David Fry is the last holdout at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, and he’s now talking about killing himself. You may not want to listen to this live feed because he’s really beginning to sound deranged; he just said, “I don’t care about the movement any more.”

UPDATE at 2/11/16 10:59:49 am by Charles Johnson

Thank goodness — David Fry has just turned himself in to the FBI. The Malheur Wildlife Refuge standoff is finally over.

Maybe this incident, should the worst case scenario play out, along with Terrible Ted Nugent’s latest anti-Semetic screed, may force the NRA to do some serious soul-searching.

I think the only thing that would be all the children and grandchildren of the board members being wiped out. I don’t want that of course but what I mean is it would take something close to home for the NRA to even consider that their inflexibility is fucking things up. The kids killed in Connecticut weren’t kids that they knew and loved so they had to take a seat to the holy altar of guns.

Ah, there’s the rub. Because if someone like Fry got treatment for his dangerous, delusional behavior, he wouldn’t be allowed to get guns, because a gun is absolutely the last thing someone like that should have.

So, if you’re crazy enough to think the Government is a giant plot by the Zionist Worldwide Conspiracy, the Illuminati, or the Trilateral Commission, you won’t seek help.

Catch 22.

Criminal defense attorney at Balloon Juice wondered why the feds had gone so soft on the charges for those arrested in Oregon (so did I).

Now we see the list of charges for Cliven Bundy and they are not screwing around at all. Looks like they delayed those other charges for the Bundy boys to see if they could lure the old man out. Expect to see more charges for the Oregon idiots in short order.

Feds usually throw the book at people during sentencing so a couple charges can equal a lot of time, as opposed to state counts where you might see a 20 count indictment somewhat regularly.

From wikipedia:
Messianic Judaism is a movement that combines Christianity—most importantly, the Christian belief that Jesus is the Messiah— with elements of Judaism and Jewish tradition.[1][2][3][4][5]……..Salvation in Messianic Judaism is achieved only through acceptance of Jesus as one’s savior,[8][13][14][15][16][17] and Jewish laws or customs which are followed do not contribute to salvation.[16][17] Indeed, belief in the messiahship, power to save, and divinity of Jesus, which Messianic Judaism professes, is the defining distinction between Christianity and Judaism.[18][19][20][21][22][23] Other Christian groups usually accept Messianic Judaism as a form of Christianity.[24]

The end of the standoff couldn’t get any more pathetic. The last one there is a mentally ill and armed person who’s indicated a willingness to end his life in suicide by cop.

The idiots talking to him on the phone don’t even know what to say to him - they’re all over the map and could be making it worse.

The FBI ought to put a cork in those talking, but they must think keeping him talking, even if it’s babble is better than any of the alternatives.

I’ve got to believe that they’ve got HRT/psychologist/psychiatrists on site to help with this. At least I hope so.

But it should also dispel the notion about how the Bundy nuts were all so heroic and determined to outlast the government. They’re a bunch of deluded people who have managed to snare even more mentally unstable types to join their “cause” which effectively boils down to the Bundys wanting something for nothing - to further their welfare queen status of not paying for the right to graze on federal land, even though the fees are below what the private sector costs. Rather, they want to own the land outright, which is a giveaway of epic proportions for something that doesn’t belong to any of them.

Oh, and they chose a place to which they have exactly zero connection. A NWR in Oregon - where none of the Bundys reside.

76

False dichotomy. There’s more than ‘rooting for his death’ and ‘rooting for him not to die’.

He is still a human being who is clearly having mental problems. What I would like to see is the law enforcement handling this properly (by getting the crazies off the phone and a trained professional on it) and then this same type of response extended in every other appropriate situation, which is what I said downstairs.

Because, ultimately, if it was someone I loved in that situation, that is the response I would want to see.

Absolutely, and there should be more done to make sure everyone has that chance, if needed.

I think we should be aware that while we say “law enforcement” we really are dealing with different organizations here. The FBI is not the Cleveland Police Department or the NYPD. I’m quite sure that there are some similar concerns, but there are also probably substantial organizational differences, in part because the situations they are called on to respond to are different.

It’s great that the FBI has learned how to have a more level-headed, rational response. We need to figure out how to translate some of that into the local police departments.

Ironically, from today:

Fear of Vengeful Gods Helped Societies Expand

Belief in an all-seeing punitive god motivates people to be more charitable towards strangers outside their own family and community, particularly to those of similar beliefs, researchers have found.

A study, published Wednesday in Nature, suggests religiosity may contribute to greater cooperation and collaboration despite geographic separation.

“People may trust in, cooperate with and interact fairly within wider social circles, partly because they believe that knowing gods will punish them if they do not,” the study’s authors wrote.

[…]

I’m rather skeptical, at least of how that news article is painting the research.

Actual paper found here:

nature.com

I’m wondering about their games they set up to try and test their hypotheses. For example, how they separate out the cause and effect, and if there might be hidden variables lurking about.

I don’t think Fry is likely to be institutionalized over prison, not long term. I think he still has the jail sentence waiting to deal with, and my guess is that in that kind of regimented environment, it would be easier to keep him on his meds.

Given what he’s like when he’s not on the meds, as evidenced here, I don’t think they’re going to ignore this issue.

These black holes were each approximately the diameter of a major metropolis. They orbited one another at a furious pace at the very end, speeding up to about 75 orbits per second — warping the space around them like a blender cranked to infinity — until finally the two black holes became one.

No, not “infinity”. 75 orbits per second is not “infinity”.

IIRC, the meds themselves can have side effects the ill person can perceive as worse than the illness itself.

It can also take months to get the med combination/dosage correct. Grueling for the sick person.

My old boss had Tourette’s. Not the ‘shouting obscenities’ kind. Just tics, eyes and hands. Sometimes so bad he’d walk into stuff. He said he could suppress them when he needed to, but they’d come back worse after.

The drug prescribed for it was, IIRC, Haldol - also used for schizophrenia. He said it made him feel like a lot of his brain was shut off. Stupid. Unable to think clearly. I suspect it does the same for Schizophrenics, and if they skip a dose, they might feel the fog lifting, and it might feel good.

I just wonder how Rod would feel if some doctor told him he was a freak because of who he’s attracted to and what gender he sees himself as. Really it’s so typical of RR nutters like him to fancy themselves victims and to liken people who disagree with them to the Nazis. IF Rod actually paid attention to his history, he’d realize that the Nazis and him shared a very similiar mindset about LGBT peopel and seeing them as people who needed to be “Fixed.”

It can take dozens of tries to find an anti-depressant that works. I’ve got a list of about 7-8 meds that didn’t work well. I do take Remeron, which hasn’t been stellar but took the bottom edge off the depression and doesn’t get in the way.

the worst thing about trying a new depression or anxiety med is the two month trial where you try to put up with the bad stuff while waiting for the good to kick in. When it doesn’t work you feel like 2-3 months have been taken out of your life.

Something that also happens is that the meds do work …and the person then thinks they no longer need them and stops taking them.

I have seen that.

At first, the effect of stopping is that the side effects go away, the absence of which, for SSRI antidepressants, can be…highly enjoyable. And then you have energy, like you didn’t have on the drugs! You can get things done! And there’s so much to do, that you don’t even need the daily nap you used to take! And you’re so full of energy, you stay up late getting things done! Everyone notices how much happier and more energetic you seem!

You think you’re cured! All that time in therapy and the meds paid off!

Then you start finding yourself STARTING a zillion things, but unable to finish any of them. Your ‘staying up late’ starts to turn into insomnia. Soon you find yourself unable to focus on any one thing, and you’re terrorized by the thought that the things you’ve started might not come out perfect, might not be done in the absolute best way.

Yeah. It starts out feeling great, ‘and then it all goes horribly wrong’. Turns out the side effects AREN’T worse than the condition.

Republicans decry Kansas court ruling on schools

Two Republican lawmakers are accusing the Kansas Supreme Court of trying to hold taxpayers and schoolchildren hostage with a ruling striking down an education funding law.

House Speaker Ray Merrick of Stillwell and state Sen. Jeff Melcher of Leawood decried the court’s ruling Thursday.

The court said the school funding law was unfair to poor districts and shorted their annual aid at least $54 million. The justices said if lawmakers don’t rewrite the law by June 30, the state’s schools must shut down.

For me, it’s a lot about self doubt. You can only get so many declined job offers or no call backs. I mean I know I have it easier as a product of America’s white upper middle class but as someone on the spectrum, it’s tough to deal with knowing how hard it is for someone to find employment. I think I’ve read the unemployment is well over 50% for people with ASD. And underemployment happens too. My last job while I liked it was quite frankly something I could have done straight out of high school.

An Iranian official said “Republican rivals of the current US administration” attempted to stall last month’s Iranian-U.S. prisoner swap until the eve of the U.S. presidential election, Tasnim News Agency reported.

According to the semi-official Iranian news outlet, Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, made the claims during a speech Thursday at a rally in Yazd, Iran.

“In the course of the talks for exchanging prisoners, the Republican rivals of the current US administration who claim to be humanitarians and advocates of human rights sent a message telling us not to release these people [American prisoners] and continue this process [of talks] until the eve of US presidential elections,” Shamkhani said, according to Tasnim.

“We acted upon our independent resolve and moved the process forward,” Shamkhani said.

The prisons are full of mentally ill people. vox.com

It’s absolutely propaganda. Make people think something was underhanded or otherwise double dealing going on with GOPers trying to take advantage of situation for political benefit.

Without them naming names, this is a blind item with no proof of happening, no matter how plausible it sounds because it seems like something some GOPers would do with their dirty tricks and blocking everything the current Administration has attempted to do since 2009.

But an objective reading would suggest that this is propaganda and nothing more.

If the Iranians name-drop and identify who was involved, that opens up new lines of inquiry.

I’d also note that Franklin Graham has dropped Saeed Abedini like a hot potato. But it wasn’t because Abedini’s estranged wife had filed for custody of their children in Idaho. It was because records came out showing Abedini had been convicted of misdemeanor spousal abuse against his estranged wife, Naghmeh, in 2007. After a lot of blamey crap was directed towards Naghmeh in Evangelical circles, when the actual screen shots of the conviction came out, Abedini’s star was tarnished and he was dropped by his famous benefactors.

Just got a chance to read this article linked above (same link here)

NBC News - Sanders: Obama Hasn’t Closed ‘Presidential Leadership Gap’

- - CUT - -

“There’s a huge gap right now between Congress and the American people. What presidential leadership is about closing that gap,” he told MSNBC in an interview Wednesday that will air in full Thursday evening on “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.”

Asked if he believed President Obama had closed that gap, Sanders said: “No, I don’t. I mean, I think he has made the effort. But I think what we need, when I talk about a political revolution, is bringing millions and millions of people into the political process in a way that does not exist right now.”

Sanders said his strategy for pushing through an ambitious agenda that includes single payer health care and free college tuition would involve mobilizing thousands of people who don’t currently participate in the political process — though he did acknowledge that the president turned out more voters, particularly minorities, than ever before.

- - CUT - -

I know what I think…but I am wondering what other takes may be.

Seems like pie-in-the-sky dreaming considering the current political climate in this country. I also realize that it is campaign rhetoric and Obama used some of the same.

One thing for sure…tonight’s debate has a chance to grow testy. Buckle up…and let’s be nice to each other.

See you for the big show! By the way…it is going to be on PBS and I read there will be streaming on YouTube.

Yeah, the “militia” types are dupes for the wealthy actors behind the scenes. If the government sold the land, who do they think would buy it? Do they really think they would end up with any of it? The Kochs don’t give a damn how many lives are ruined ginning up anti-government feeling. They stand to reap huge profits, and “the little guy” will have even less of a voice if the land becomes privately owned.

And seriously, what the fuck is wrong with these obscenely rich people? Why not retire, get hobbies and just enjoy a luxurious lifestyle——-maybe dabble in philanthropy? They have more money than they can ever enjoy in their lifetime*——why do they need more? That degree of acquisitiveness seems like a form of mental illness.

*Maybe that’s what pisses them off——-it is so unfair that there are not enough hours in the day to spend and enjoy their plunder so everyone else should be punished and for that they need even more power.

re: #319 ObserverArt

I would advise Sanders to be careful about what he says. If he were realistic about the “leadership gap,” he’d admit that GOP/TPers never intended to work with this president on any issue. He’d also admit that the GOP/TPers have intentionally lied about almost everything the president has said/done and have played the race card endlessly to portray him as “the enemy” of the entire world. He’s alienating a lot of Obama supporters by saying things like this, many of them Black Americans, myself included. Teaming up with Rev. Al won’t help him, if he keeps making comments of this sort. Another thing he doesn’t seem to be aware of is that not all of us hold Rev. Al as someone we admire and will listen to when it comes to voting for certain politicians. At this point, I’ve not aligned myself with Clinton or Sanders because I’m watching and taking notes and plan to base my vote on which one I think can win in November. I’ll vote for the dem candidate then, whether it’s Clinton or Sanders at that time because I can’t see myself voting for any GOP/TPer.
