Scalia: No Heart Attack, Health Was Poor, Family Said No Autopsy, Conspiracy Theories Rage

As conspiracy theories rage out of control on the right wing
US News • Views: 41,377

The Presidio Country Judge who declared Antonin Scalia dead is now saying she was misquoted by Dallas TV station WFAA, and that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia did not die of a heart attack. But according to Scalia’s personal physician, he was not in good health.

Guevara acknowledged that she pronounced Scalia dead by phone, without seeing his body. Instead, she spoke to law enforcement officials at the scene — who assured her “there were no signs of foul play” — and Scalia’s physician in Washington, who said that the 79-year-old justice suffered from a host of chronic conditions.

“He was having health issues,’’ Guevara said, adding that she is awaiting a statement from Scalia’s doctor that will be added to his death certificate when it is issued later this week.

Guevara also rebutted a report by a Dallas TV station that quoted her as saying that Scalia had died of “myocardial infarction.” In an interview with The Washington Post, she said she meant only that his heart had stopped.

“It wasn’t a heart attack,” Guevara said. “He died of natural causes.”

The right wing blogs are all freaking out because no autopsy was performed, inventing all kinds of weird conspiracy theories because that’s what they do. But in fact, it was the expressed wish of Scalia’s family that there be no autopsy.

A manager at the El Paso funeral home where Scalia’s body was taken said that his family made it clear they did not want one.

Meanwhile, here are some more excerpts from the comment section of the epicenter of right wing bad craziness, Breitbart “News:”

Scalia died of the rare and completely natural condition known as Chronic Facepillowchloroformia. Now there’s nothing to see here. Move along please.

All of these are just from the first page of only one comment thread. The deluge of sheer insanity over there is mind-boggling.

As for Alex Jones, he seems to think it’s possible Obama had Scalia murdered so he could install a member of the Muslim Brotherhood on the Supreme Court and impose shariah law on the United States. Yes, really. A screenshot from his Facebook page:

Scalia actually lived a long time for an obese cigar smoker, James Galdofini was only 51 when he passed.

Again, the GOP had a chance to distance itself from the Crazy but they failed to do so for fear of alienating their “base”. And now that degree of lunacy has become standard

Appearing on conservative Kentucky radio host Leland Conway’s show, the former Republican presidential candidate said he would likely oppose any Obama pick for the Supreme Court, because he believes Obama has too many of his own policies at stake before the high court — his executive actions on immigration and climate change regulations, for example.

“The president has said he has the power basically to create immigration law out of nothing,” Paul said. “He says he has the power to basically cripple entire industries like coal without ever having been given that power by Congress. So see, we have a Constitutional debate on whose powers is it, the president or Congress? And I think the president sort of has a conflict of interest here in appointing somebody while we’re trying to decide whether or not he’s usurped power.

I am so weary of this eejit.

The Republican Supreme Court tantrum is a gift to Democrats, especially to Hillary Clinton

The Republicans have been caught up in a death spiral for a long time, where appeasing the base is unavoidable but makes them even more unpopular with the general public. This is just more of the same. The smart political move would be to let Obama have his judge and live to fight another day. But since that will be framed as capitulation by the conservative press, the Republicans will have to take this on, dismantling what is left of their reputation in the eyes of the general public. If you’re working for the DNC right now, I’d make sure the fridge is well stocked with champagne.

Also, random though, but one of the reasons this is an unusual situation is because Supreme Court Justices tend to not resign during presidential elections. It’s not uncommon for Justices to wait until after an election, usually in the hopes that whoever wins will appoint a like minded successor.

That said, I still think Obama should nominate someone to fill the seat and that the Senate should vote on that nominee.

Totally figures that they’d seek government legal representation. Then again, that’d probably be more competent than the so-called militia/sovereign citizen lawyers who’d all but guarantee the Bundys spend the rest of their lives in prison (although they deserve it for all the crimes committed).

Scalia most likely died in office because he was not going to retire while a Democrat was president.

For the Republicans to burble on about letting the next president make the nomination is especially obnoxious in this context.

139
KGxvi  Feb 15, 2016 • 11:51:44am

re: #131 Eclectic Cyborg

Actually, it might be better to stick Bundy with a Public Defender that does him no good.

Appointed counsel in federal courts aren’t like public defenders in state court:

Federal defender organizations, together with the more than 10,000 private “panel attorneys” who accept CJA assignments annually, represent the vast majority of individuals who are prosecuted in our nation’s federal courts. CJA panel attorneys accept appointments in all CJA cases in the four districts not served by a federal defender organization. In those districts with a defender organization, panel attorneys are typically assigned between 30 percent and 40 percent of the CJA cases, generally those where a conflict of interest or some other factor precludes federal defender representation. Nationwide, federal defenders receive approximately 60 percent of CJA appointments, and the remaining 40 percent are assigned to the CJA panel.

Today, panel attorneys are paid an hourly rate of $129 in non-capital cases, and, in capital cases, a maximum hourly rate of $183. These rates are effective for work performed on or after January 1, 2016. The rates include both attorney compensation and office overhead. In addition, there are case maximums that limit total panel attorney compensation for categories of representation (for example, $10,000 for felonies, $2,900 for misdemeanors, and $7,200 for appeals). These maximums may be exceeded when higher amounts are certified by the district judge, or circuit judge if the representation is at the court of appeals, as necessary to provide fair compensation and the chief judge of the circuit approves.

A lot of respectable firms are involved in these programs. You’re not going to find Saul Goodman types playing in federal court.

No worries. Most people don’t know much about how the Courts work generally.

91 of the 94 districts have Federal Defenders, which are basically public defenders. But unlike your county public defender, they’re not inclined to take any warm body with a JD. From what I gather, they are typically well staffed too, so they’re not playing behind the 8 ball like in state court (it also helps that the federal docket is usually smaller too).

Yep. Just posted a page about this. Trump brings out the “nuclear option” any time he feels threatened (usually by his own big mouth), knowing that a 3rd-party run by him is the Ultimate Freakout Nightmare for every GOP establishment type. It’s become settled knowledge in the GOP that a libertarian or evangelical 3rd-party candidate would absolutely decimate them. Which is why they continually placate these goddam loons.

The question increasingly is: would losing the Trump voters - many of who just registered and really aren’t engaged with politics other than at a WWE level - really doom the GOP? Or are these people who were so lazy/stupid that they never voted before anyway?

Trump hasn’t got the guts to go third-party; besides, he knows he has Rinsed Pubis and the rest of the GOP leadership by the short-and-curlys.

Here’s the NYT piece on how hostile Trump’s core supporters are to the GOP: nytimes.com

It’s a bit dated. I remember a piece from Sunday, basically with the frothing rage-a-holics all talking about how they don’t care if the entire GOP burns, because they hate it and it’s useless to them anyway.

Basically, the kind of talk that makes Frank Luntz curl into a ball and suck his thumb.

If Trump runs third party and takes enough FL voters with him, it likely would doom the GOP candidate.

We have to see how he does in SC, and if the single-digit dolts keep their grift going. It could very well be that bottom 3 are being told by Rinse Plebicite to keep running in order to prevent Trump from going over 40% in order to force a Red Wedding in Cleveland.

Not sure if it’s a question of guts. His overweening ego demands that he be treated like a billionaire (i.e., “a person who literally never hears the word ‘no’ from the moment he awakens to the moment he falls asleep … the most he’ll get in dissent is ‘We’ll look into that, sir.’ “) will cause him to fly into a rage if he really starts taking a lot of fire. As it looks like he will.

And yes, he does have the GOP by the nards. Because he totally can fund a 3rd party candidacy out of petty cash, and even do the Trumpian equivalent of launching a “Bull Moose” party. Which would really blow them to hell.

re: #176 Khal Wimpo (coatless in Vermont)

The question increasingly is: would losing the Trump voters - many of who just registered and really aren’t engaged with politics other than at a WWE level - really doom the GOP? Or are these people who were so lazy/stupid that they never voted before anyway?

At least here in South Carolina, it’s not new Republicans who are for Trump. There are a shit ton of “mainstreamers” (hey, it’s SC, so they’re crazy as well) and a few I know of who at various times have claimed to be and sometimes run as Democrats. The best part of the latter is that now that they’ve shown their true colors, we don’t ever have to entertain their insanity again.

He was asked at the debate “Has anyone ever said ‘No’ to you?” and he was flustered, then said “my wife.” He didn’t specify which one, but it was probably Ivana or Marla.

Interesting take. If the Establishment is playing for a brokered convention where insider rules & superdelegates beat out Trump on technicalities, we will see crazed street violence that will make Chicago ‘68 look like pattycake.

Abbie Hoffman and the Yippies didn’t tote AK-47s and body armor the way the Tea Party loons do.

Just imagine what would have happend if they had.

Speaking of which, now would be a good time for the Democratic superdelegates to pledge to support the pledged delegate leader, whoever that may be.

It probably won’t be a brokered convention, but a contested one, if you follow this somewhat lone voice in the wilderness of GOLland.

I don’t know what the firearm laws are like in Ohio, but the real question is how many Trumpensteins are in any of the GOP command and control positions? I suspect few and far between, sort of like Sanders’ quixotic run for the Democratic nomination.

re: #171 goddamnedfrank

Trump is trying to pit blacks against latinos in this new campaign ad(warning: links to Trump’s website.)

This is overt racism, a Willie Horton ad turned on its side. Simply despicable, and utterly insulting to the intelligence of black voters who I guarantee you see right through that divide and conquer race baiting bullshit.

This is why it really bothers me how welcoming people remain here of Dark_Falcon after his absolutely disgusting suggestion the other day that a path forward to confirming Indian born Judge Sri Srinivasan should be found by somehow vilifying muslim Pakistanis.

It took me too long to figure out precisely why that ticked me off so much, and by the time I was finished, the thread was dead.

But it’s really simple. DF’s suggestion was an endorsement of all the usual GOP race-baiting, Southern strategy, divide and conquer evil bullshit by way of imitation.

Apparently there is nothing wrong with bigotry etc. as long as the bigots vote GOP and don’t embarrass the establishment (e.g., by going anti-semitic in NRO comments).

Maybe more that Bernie’s spokespeople are dem versions of Trump’s spokespeople. You really can’t compare the candidates.

There definitely are parallels though. They’re both deliberately leading populist campaigns that cater to people’s diffuse and often poorly articulated anger. They’re both offering simplistic, one-size-fits-all solutions and vastly over promising on what they’d be capable of delivering.

It’s more about the press coverage. Some outlets include superdelegates in the count, which leads to inflated figures for HRC, even though in the end the superdelegates are irrelevant. Makes it look like the deck is stacked, which benefits no one.

While driving around shopping today, I noticed that the fake religious family planning clinic in St. Paul that used to be a half block from the Planned Parenthood clinic has moved. They moved so that they could be next to the new Planned Parenthood clinic on University Avenue. Who could have seen that coming?

Portman has lost his TP support. NOM is trying to get a primary challenger because he’s no longer opposed to gay marriage and other TP groups aren’t up for backing him. So maybe he’s doing this to improve his standing with the wingnuts he thinks he needs on election day.

Another 1-3 inches of snow.
HEAVY, WET SNOW.

We have one in effect from now until 1pm tomorrow. Possibly 8 - 12 inches in our little area of the Erie snow belt.

You can look at Scalia and pretty much guess what killed him. Overweight, blotchy face, probably smoking, a high fat diet, and lack of exercise. Add his age to the equation, and you have a guy living on borrowed time before his heart decides it’s done. It’s no different than thousands and thousands of other Americans whose conditions have deteriorated past what is sustainable.

Sounds like he got to enjoy a typical GOP canned bird hunt before his death, though no attorneys got shot in the face this time, we’re aware. Maybe it’s karma for the quail?
