Eleven of the top 18 officials on the agency’s organizational chart a year ago have been fired or forced out or have quit, and more could leave soon in an overhaul that Bush has described as a “reboot.”

In their place, Bush, a former Fort Worth resident, has given top jobs to two of his law school classmates, two relatives of members of two Bush presidential administrations and at least three others with ties to the family or other political leaders.

In all, Bush has hired at least 29 people who worked on his campaign or have political connections, according to a review of thousands of pages of personnel records. The agency did not advertise any of the openings publicly.

I’d assume that with that many people playing, eveyrone would get a headphone amp with the ability to control levels on sub-mixes (drums, keys, horns, bass, etc.)

I recorded at a pretty nice studio for a while and each member of the band got a headphone amp with their own 8-channel mix. We were only a 4-piece, but I’m sure the same principle would apply.

I think part of the reason for this is that some good ideals were put down in writing (e.g., “all men are created equal” etc.).

Even though slavery at the time of the founding made a mockery of this, the words remained as an inspiration to do better. But we can’t be slaves to the text, as Scalia would have it. Women’s suffrage shouldn’t have needed a constitutional amendment to secure.

Those difficulties resulted in the infamous 3/5ths rule for House apportionment. Counting the slaves as equivalent to white inhabitants would have given the South more representatives than northern states. Counting the slaves as zero would have given the advantage to the North.

The non slaveholders simply didn’t have the power to do anything about it then. Had they pressed this issue, there most likely would have been no Constitution and the US would have bumbled along with the articles of confederation. It’s hard to see how that could have turned out better for anyone.

We may have gotten lucky that they happened to be reasonable men who wanted to be left alone to do business, with Montesquieu, and by extension, the history of the Roman empire, to fall back on. Much is made of John Locke’s influence but when you study the history of the Roman Empire in detail, particularly the transition from Republic to Empire, there are many good and subtle lessons about separation of powers in that history.

Can you have a Democracy? Yes, but it tends to vote itself into madness without a check.

Can you have a Caesar? Yes, if he’s not too young, too old, or poorly educated, or crazy, or in the pocket of the army, or is free to make shit up as he goes along without consequences.

Can you have a Republic? Yes, but without diversified opinions at the top, and a uniform system of laws that everyone must follow, it’s not much good and will decay into venal satrapy without tending.

My understanding is that we can thank Montesquieu for an essentially anthropological study of ancient politics. Separation of powers, and checks and balances, is very under-rated in the teaching of American Revolution. We’re so hung up on treating those men as White Gods of Goodness that we ignore larger lessons about where they got their ideas from.

I finally upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I have 5.1 sound on my computer and I was lamenting that I couldn’t get Dolby Digital on Netflix on a PC. With the Metro interface, Microsoft’s app store has a Netflix app and it provides DD sound. I’m in Netflix DD re-watching heaven.

So, I’m re-watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and I notice that Raina really makes this white and gold dress look good….

I’m curious, your reference to the dress, do you not believe that it can be seen in two different colours?

I downloaded it as a jpeg, so it can not change and I have seen it as white and gold as well as purple and black, within a few minutes of each other sitting in the same position.

I do not understand why, only that I have witnessed it on numerous occasions.

Those difficulties resulted in the infamous 3/5ths rule for House apportionment. Counting the slaves as equivalent to white inhabitants would have given the South more representatives than northern states. Counting the slaves as zero would have given the advantage to the North.

And abolishing slavery before forming the Republic was a non-starter, politically speaking.

And that is why Obama should not nominate a new SCOTUS judge: he has already served out 3/5ths of his term…

I sampled the white in gimp and it came up as #7380ad
Which is quite purple when views as a sample.

And the gold was #69594a which is quite brown.
Which looks black when seeing the dress as purple and black.

I think it may be a right brain left brain thing.

The problem often lies in which kind of monitor people look at such pictures with. A cheap badly colour-balanced monitor is going to make the image look different to anyone viewing it on a decent (i.e. expensive) and correctly setup monitor.

I have a high-definition IPS/IZGO desktop screen which has a high colour gamut (99% Adobe, 100% sRGB). I occasionally do a side-by-side comparison of images from the web with an older lower-resolution TN-screen laptop and it’s like they’re different images, colour-wise.

Can you have a Republic? Yes, but without diversified opinions at the top, and a uniform system of laws that everyone must follow, it’s not much good and will decay into venal satrapy without tending.

My understanding is that we can thank Montesquieu for an essentially anthropological study of ancient politics. Separation of powers, and checks and balances, is very under-rated in the teaching of American Revolution. We’re so hung up on treating those men as White Gods of Goodness that we ignore larger lessons about where they got their ideas from.

My son tried them but then promptly went to trying to build the same in Legos instead. To each their own, I suppose. I did every aircraft one I could get my hands on - every thing from the P-6E to the P-40, P-38, P-39, P-47, P-51, P-61 & P-82 to the B-17, B-25, B-29, B-47 & B-52. F-86 & most of the century birds too. Many many hours of fun. My father would then hang them above the stairway going up to the bedrooms of the 2nd floor of the farmhouse.

I always wanted, but never found, a kit for an A-20. I was not a good enough modeler to scratch build that.

I’m so glad to be called intellectually lazy for calling out Chucky Todd and the rest of the so called journalists who have actively avoided addressing the 800 pound gorilla in the room that is Trump’s overt racism and xenophobia.

Trump makes no secret of this stuff. He actively quotes/tweets white supremacists (the guy he frequently quotes has a handle whitegenocide). That’s not hiding in the shadows. He’s out there.

Trump pushes a xenophobic agenda - demonizing Muslims and Mexicans. He makes all kinds of threats and baseless statements, and his supporters - GOP supporters - flock to him in ever greater numbers.

Where’s the reporting on all that? Journalists appear dumbfounded that Trump’s knocking out all the career politicians and the pretenders, but fact is that Trump is saying essentially the same thing as the rest of the candidates - only that he’s far more explicit and blunt.

That’s biting analysis, not intellectual laziness. Intellectual laziness is Chucky Todd getting his panties in a bunch about being called out for ignoring Trump’s racism/xenophobia, but only identifying when journalists are the target of Trump’s ire (*which is what happens daily, but I digress).

Guess Todd ignored what happened when Trump railed into Megyn Kelly. Trump’s ratings soared.

But the thing I’ve got to love the most is the Trump fans who think that minorities are flocking to Trump. No proof. None whatsoever. In the primaries, Trump is getting about what you’d expect based on the percentages he’s won - and most minorities simply don’t vote Republican. And with Trump’s incessant statements, he’s not going to curry favors to improve the GOP standing with minorities either.

Models by kit-bashing was an advent of the plastic model industry. Supposedly (and, all lore is just that, lore of questionable heritage) the Falcon model was one of the first kit-bash models used in a major motion picture.

But, as you noted, CGI is faster, cheaper, easier to change on the fly, and what is now done.

Heh. One of my first jobs was working in a Hobby Shop as a stock boy. We had a Tyco HO scale slot car track layout in the back room for entertainment when times were slow. We sold all kinds of plastic model kits, flying model airplanes, model rockets and engines, model railroad stuff, etc. For a 14 year old it was heaven.

One of my all time favorite models I built was a ‘69 Mercury Montego that I turned into a dirt track late model racer. I took a Bic lighter and lightly rumple the plastic down the sides a bit and then painted it. I took the ‘tree’ plastic and cut all the part tabs off and then sanded it smooth and then used it to built the front, side and rear ‘nerf’ bars. Scratched it up a bit and used the military “earth” paints to splatter the sides and wheel wheels with mud. Put on over size tires and the it came off just like a Saturday night special.

I think model building is great. It made me into a pretty strong scale model rocket builder and got me into the NAR (National Association of Rocketry) National Competitions two years. It teaches patience, dexterity and creativity with a little real world engineering tossed in.

There’s an adage popularly circulated by the US military to the effect “On a battlefield, if you can be seen you will be killed.” Carriers can’t be unseen, they’re giant radar-positive targets, billions of dollars and thousands of personnel requiring billions more dollars of escorts and thousands more personnel to (perhaps) keep them afloat in a real fight. However they’re also a rung on the promotion ladder the same way battleships were to a previous generation of flag officers so they’re not going to go away any time soon

There’s only been one real shooting war between navies with approximately equal capabilities since WWII, the Falklands War. The result was that virtually no surface ships engaged each other and the greatest single loss was down to a submarine, HMS Conqueror which had a shooting solution on the Belgrano for over 24 hours before permission to fire was given by the civilians in charge in London. After that the Royal Navy, probably the top experts in anti-submarine warfare on the planet at the time barely managed to keep a single obsolete diesel Argentinian submarine from successfully attacking RN ships and never managed to press home a successful attack on it on the few occasions the could find it.

The British through-deck cruisers (aka Harrier carriers) were forced to stand off well to the east of the islands meaning the Harriers had long over-water flights to reach their area of operations over the islands but even then the carriers came under attack from air-launched Exocet anti-shipping missiles. Those missiles have gotten even better since then, in range and effectiveness. The carriers haven’t improved their survivability. Maybe a camouflage net would help…

It’s been getting worse the more consolidated the industry gets. There’s only one tank maker anymore. 2 real aircraft makers - Boeing and Lockheed-Martin. There is no competition. At least when Grumman, Lockheed, McDonnel Douglas, Martin, North American, Republic and Northrup were all fighting for a single contract the taxpayer usually got a better deal. Ship building is even worse.

First thing that would help is a constitutional amendment banning retired government employees, to include military personnel, from working for any company that provides services or products to any government entity. That would put a screeching halt to one of the biggest sources of graft in the US: the use of high salary jobs as bribery.

The US has more full size carriers than most nations combined - and most of the rest are operated by our allies like France and the UK.

Our carrier fleet numbers includes both the full size Nimitz class carriers and the helicopter carriers like the USS Wasp. Most other nations have carriers that are on par with the Wasp. China has 1 carrier, with a possible second in development. Russia has one. The UK has 4. France has 5. India has 4.

Before WW2 started, the professionals knew that battleships weren’t the ultimate naval weapon. The Navy even required commanders who would command carriers to be aviators. Bull Halsey had to get his wings or he would have commanded a destroyer squadron for his career.

We aren’t going to war against other navies. The navy has other strategic tasks. For example, bringing a strike capability to just about anywhere in the world we deem it necessary. Poor spelling indicates inattention to detail and lack of technological acumen (autocorrect, spellchecking), neither of which is a good thing, especially on Twitter. I’ll be one of the first people to advocate paying attention to the message and not the way it is presented, but I’m also the kind of guy that throws out a resume if it has spelling and formatting errors. If you can’t learn how to spell words and use them correctly, or at least rely on a machine to do that for you, don’t expect to be taken seriously.

For canned soup, they’re pretty good especially for things like Minestrone and Beef-Barley. On sale all week. I’ll have to stop by again as finances permit and stock up on the better ones.

Poor spelling indicates inattention to detail and lack of technological acumen (autocorrect, spellchecking), neither of which is a good thing, especially on Twitter. I’ll be one of the first people to advocate paying attention to the message and not the way it is presented, but I’m also the kind of guy that throws out a resume if it has spelling and formatting errors. If you can’t learn how to spell words and use them correctly, or at least rely on a machine to do that for you, don’t expect to be taken seriously.

That is not true in all cases. I know people that are very bright, very long-headed, but do make spelling and grammar errors. I think there are differences in how brains are wired, including a wide range of dyslexia. In fact, sometimes I wonder how many people are normal!

As an example, take Stonekettle. His essays are usually full of glitches, and has told his readers to let him know so he can clean it up.

I am an editor, under one hat, and it always bothers me, but I don’t hold it against the person expressing the ideas.

They also list some of the “odd” items on the model that you can find, such as aircraft, R2-D2, etc. And just looking at it and having some experience with plastic scale models I could spot lots of bits that I recognized as being car or ship kit parts.

Watch for federal prosecutors to file superseding indictments against the Bundy welfare queen domestic terrorist cell that operated out of Malheur NWR in March. The feds are likely to be adding names to the indictment as well.

The potential for new charges in a superseding indictment and naming of other defendants will depend on the federal government’s ongoing investigation, according to court records filed late Friday.

Defense lawyers representing 25 people already indicted on a federal conspiracy charge stemming from the 41-day occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge want the government to turn over the evidence they have obtained so far as part of discovery in preparation for a trial.

Further, each defendant wants to be informed whether FBI agents captured any of them on electronic surveillance equipment.

Prosecutors counter that evidence will be turned over 14 days after the defendants are arraigned on the indictment, scheduled for this Wednesday.

This is going to be fun - a bunch of sovereign citizens who regularly posted all kinds of crap on Twitter, YouTube, and other electronic sources, want the feds to indicate whether they were captured on electronic surveillance equipment.

Lest we forget, the domestic terrorists also tampered with utilities’ equipment, possibly tampered with webcams and other electronic gear on the NWR, and did tremendous damage to the NWR - in the name of all Americans, even though the NWR is already held in trust for all Americans.

What class was that? I wasn’t aware of an DD class in the RN that took that sort of losses. I know their light cruiser classes got beat up. And the IJN DDs had a rough time, with I think a few classes totally lost by the end of war, mainly to aircraft or submarines.

On the topic of feminism and stay-at-home moms: Mrs. Fish is definitely a feminist. That being said, she and I have had many discussions on women that actually want to stay at home. I think the popular right-wing meme of “femi-nazi” (I know, we all hate that term) comes from women who think that a stay-at-home mom is doing something wrong, or is hurting the cause somehow. I think that’s only true if she’s feeling forced into staying at home by a controlling husband or social circumstances; sometimes, there is no allowance made for women who are happy at home and want that for their career choice. I think we wind up focusing too much on the end result and not on the means by which a woman arrived there.

The federal government has no say in how local food is locally produced and sold; they do care what goes into it that is not “food.” It’s when it enters interstate commerce that the Feds care. E.g., raw milk is legal in many states (those where it is not is by state law) ya just can’t go from MD to PA and back to buy your listeria or tuberculosis laden milk.

Even if you add Bush’s votes to those of Marco Rubio, who posted another triumphant third-place finish, Rubio still loses to Trump pretty handily. (Of course, Rubio has now picked up the endorsement of political juggernaut Willard Romney.)

Rubio actually did finish second, the last I saw. Beat Cruz by 1000 votes. And Mittens hasn’t endorsed Rubio, yet. But he probably will. Establishment Lane wants to roll their dice on Marco Polo Rubio.

In a related note, all these GOPers who are railing on and on about how Common Core is a federal program, and that as President they’ll end Common Core are lying through their teeth, eyes, and arses.

Common Core has absolutely nothing to do with the federal government. It was and remains a state-centric compact to improve and standardize goals and accountabilities. Business got behind it in a big way, because some states simply don’t know/care whether their children are properly educated.

So, this apparently pissed off folks who are ignorant about education (like some who think home-schooling is only way to avoid stuff like science, evolution, and keeping religion out of science classrooms), and demanded that this “federal” program be ended. People like Gov. Christie have said that they’d end it too - or that they’ve ended Common Core in their states.

No, what we’ve seen happen is that at most these states have simply changed the names, but the curricula remains the same because the years of work to make these changes happen aren’t going to go away. The GOP has gotten behind anti-Common Core in a big way, and their way to address it is quite like how some would have treated Obamacare had Obama lost in 2012 to Romney - they’d simply rename it Romneycare and call it a day.

Oh, and the hilarity of it all is that it’d be a whole lot more fed government invasiveness if the president tries to end Common Core, because as I noted at the top that Common core is a state compact. It’d take efforts at the state level in the 40+ states that adopted Common Core (or renamed Common Core) programs.

Lest we forget, the domestic terrorists also tampered with utilities’ equipment, possibly tampered with webcams and other electronic gear on the NWR, and did tremendous damage to the NWR - in the name of all Americans, even though the NWR is already held in trust for all Americans.

As an example, take Stonekettle. His essays are usually full of glitches, and has told his readers to let him know so he can clean it up.

Isn’t the point that accepting the mistake/s gracefully is key?

K-class, my dad’s ship was the Kimberley. You can see a photo of it here that I scanned in from a print he had on the wall for years.

Ah. And The Med was a particularly dangerous place for RN ships in 1940-41 when they were essentially operating alone vs both the Germans and the Italians.
