“We have to just say no!” Normand said. “I’m a Republican but I’m not a hypocrite. We have to look at ourselves critically as a party and figure out where we are and what we’re going to be about.” He admitted to the audience that he was partly at fault because he “endorsed that idiot,” but said that it was time to move toward solutions. Due to the budget problems, Normand says that the state will be cutting funding to mental health which causes more problems for law enforcement officers. The state also plans to close five state prisons that houses 8,000 inmates.

He even denounced following the policy recommendations of Grover Norquist who makes Republican candidates sign a pledges not raise taxes. “We better get concerned. We better wake up. We better be honest,” Normand said. “We better talk about the issues because we are going to pay the price.” He continued saying that the state cannot cut its way to a balanced budget because doing so will cut the resources necessary for law enforcement officers like him to do their job safely and effectively. “We do not need to face the stupidity of our leadership as it relates to how we’re going to face balancing this budget and talking about these silly issues because we’re worried about what Grover Norquist thinks. To hell with Grover Norquist! I don’t care about Grover Norquist!” he said to audience applause. “We’re worried about the ATR report card,” he said referencing the ranking of public schools.

When it comes to the Republican party in Washington, D.C., Normand wants them to stop attacking. He cited Medicaid expansion which would cover the cost for things like drug addiction and mental health that officers often witness on the streets and in prisons. “And I have to listen to my Republican counterparts talk about gobbledigook. Blah, blah blah… And I’m so sick and tired of hearing: Obama, Obama, Obama. You know how much intellect it takes to blame something on somebody else? This much!” he said holding his hand up to indicate zero. “Propose a solution. Work together.” He closed by comparing politics to being married and asked how many people in the audience refuse to compromise in their marriages.

The GOP establishment has many problems.

1) There’s an embarrassing infestation of white nationalists in the GOP.

2) Not to mention the religious zealots and various other assorted cranks in the GOP.

3) The GOP ‘he-man women haters club’ really livens things up as well.

Sadly for the GOP establishment, these problems and many others are all completely and totally self-inflicted. Rich Birchers didn’t want to pay their taxes, and found that a message of screwing everyone else in society over to lower taxes on rich Birchers was unpopular.

Instead they made a ‘big-tent’ party for every crank in the country that could be propagandized into voting their resentments, and this has worked well for decades.

No group of so-called leaders has ever deserved humiliating defeat from the likes of Fuckface von Clownstick more than the GOP establishment.

“…Donald Trump should have been kicked out of the Republican Party the moment he began talking about violating the Constitution. The first time he hinted about assaulting the journalists covering his rallies, he should have been shown the door. When he openly advocated torture (“worse than waterboarding”), he should have been ushered away. When he began speaking of closing houses of worship, he should have been expelled. He has solemnly pledged to violate the First, Fourth and Eighth Amendments of the Constitution, at the least. If someone’s platform is unconstitutional, it boggles the mind that a major American party would put him or her up for president. How can he take the oath of office with a straight face?”

I would think that would have too much potential for impacting others. In general my impression of the various assassinations has been that they are very, very targeted. Involving anyone past the target has the potential to backfire severely.

“I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor and that of his country,” Mr. Cruz recited. “Victory or death.”

Hillary really needs a Hispanic or African-American running mate. Minorities are too important to the Democratic party to run two whites on the ticket anymore.

I think Julian Castro would fill that well. Trying to think of good African-Americans. Not sure about Cory Booker. I like him quite a bit but I don’t know how I feel about letting Christie fill that vacancy. Deval Patrick, former governor of Massachusetts is interesting but don’t know raelly. Polls: Donald Trump the overwhelming Republican presidential favorite in Florida

Trounces. Crushes. Pummels. Pick a dramatic action verb: This is what Donald Trump does to Marco Rubio in Florida, according to a new presidential poll that shows Trump is more popular than he’s ever been in Rubio’s home state.

The survey, by Quinnipiac University, shows Trump leading Rubio 44-28 percent less than three weeks before Florida’s March 15 primary. And voters — tens of thousands of them — are already casting ballots by mail, which leaves Rubio very little time to make up the deficit against the Republican front-runner.

Yeah I always thought it stopped after 1924 too. I figure most of mine came in through New York but I’ve got no records to prove that. re: #127 Jenner7

A lot of people forget this, but the early 1990s were the peak of the rise in violent crime that started in the 1950s. Many in the Black community were calling for harsh sentences for dealers selling crack cocaine, which was leading to ‘Black genocide’ in the words of a number of black leaders. “Superpredators” was a term which, I think, originated in the Social Sciences to describe the violence of street gangs of the era.

Since that time we have seen s drop in violent crime, just as unexpected as was the original rise. Was it, as some researchers have suggested, leaded gasoline, depositing lead most in those neighborhoods which saw the highest rise in crime? It’s a solid hypothesis, with both correlative data and a mechanism of action for both the rise and fall.

Overall, though, it’s reasonable to say that we as a society overreacted, and that a rational society corrects itself.

But given that Bernie voted for the damn bill, why is it only Hillary who’s being held accountable for it?

Castle Garden is what existed before Ellis right? If that’s the case then I think that surely is where my dad’s paternal grandfather (German) came in from. No idea where my Irish ones came in from since they emigrated at various time periods. The earliest one way before the famine even. The Irish researcher I’m working with is a little pessimistic about finding anything on them given how long ago it was and that my great grandmother’s maiden name is really really common as is her mother’s for the County they came from.

In case anyone missed this earlier today, here is the Trump Effect?

In Iowa, fans chant ‘Trump! Trump!’ at racially diverse high school basketball team

From the moment Donald Trump announced his presidential bid in June, he has used antipathy toward illegal immigrants as a mainstay of his campaign. Now his name is being invoked by basketball fans in Iowa who are trying to taunt a racially diverse high school team there.

Perry High is located in a rural part of the state, making its relatively high percentage of minorities unusual. According to a report by Iowa TV station WHO, fans at a game Monday were chanting “Trump! Trump! Trump!” and “U-S-A” at Perry players, who include boys of Latino, Native American and African American heritage.

“It’s honestly disrespectful. That’s how I take it. I hear it during the game, on and off the court. Everywhere I go,” Shammond Ivory, a senior on the team, told WHO.

re: #165 Blind Frog Belly White

That’s what stumps me.

The thing is, to me, that it doesn’t matter. Let’s say he gets the solid support from the 27-30% that always goes GOP no matter what. Apparently Sanders found himself getting little traction outside of his narrow demographic sliver when he argued the issues, as he tried again and again in the early campaign, so now he’s gone Sandbagger in arguing that he’s the only “pure” progressive. Which means no longer can he simply disagree with Hillary, he has to be diametrically opposed to her. Problem is, his history is not so one-sided and it’s coming back to haunt him.

The better half is a pretty big Sanders supporter. We haven’t been talking much at all about politics this primary season, but we had a road trip over the weekend and we got to discussing it. I opined that Sanders’ pure-as-driven-snow record counted as a negative for me, because it means he’s never felt the need to compromise and I worry he might be pretty bad at it in office. Executives always need to compromise. It might be the most important part of the job, brokering things between factions.

This got a long pause and eventual agreement.

Hillary’s got people like Booker out there to boost for her. Meanwhile, Bernie’s surrogates are Cornel West and Killer Mike, two assholes who’ve repeatedly denigrated Obama and (recently) Rev Sharpton. The latter is notable because Bernie skipped a vote on NK sanctions to have lunch with Sharpton.

For another, Obama was running a campaign that was big on inclusion, where Bernie’s is largely “if you’re not progressive, I don’t care about you.”

Plus, Obama was a (relatively) young black candidate. A first. That was a significant factor. That he didn’t promise manna from heaven was a big plus too.

What’s super stupid about all this “Confederate Heritage” stuff is that the Confederacy only last 4 years (give or take) before it was defunct.

Therefore, how much “heritage” can one have as a “Confederate”?

The only such heritage is of warfare, in the most destructive war in the US in which the US was involved.

The only heritage the Confederacy has if of warfare.

I think that was a little different. That was a matter of sheer survival. I can’t compare Soviet WWII veterans to CSA ones. I do think more blame is on the feet of the elite of the CSA than the rank and file but I can’t compare the two. I think this is more analogous to those who enlisted in the summer of 1914.

Oh I dunno. There were a lot of loyalists in the Revolution. It’s not as frequently discussed but Adams did famously say 1/3 of the country was pro-separation, the other 1/3 for staying, and the other 1/3 wanted to be left alone. I do know you’re not doing that because we do agree that there is a difference between honoring your individual CSA ancestor and the CSA cause being honored by a state.

Poverty across Wisconsin reaches highest level in 30 years

Poverty in Wisconsin hit its highest level in 30 years during the five-year period ending in 2014, even as the nation’s economy was recovering from the Great Recession, according to a trend analysis of U.S. Census data just released by University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers.

The number of Wisconsin residents living in poverty averaged 13% across that post-recession time frame — the highest since 1984, according to the analysis by UW-Madison’s Applied Population Laboratory. In 1984, the nation’s stubborn unemployment rate stabilized in the wake of a double-dip recession.

The analysis dovetails with an unrelated study that identified pockets of the country faring worse as the economic recovery gains some traction, released Thursday by a national nonprofit research group in Washington, D.C.

That study, by the Economic Innovation Group, found the gap between the richest and poorest American communities widening, and ranked Milwaukee the seventh most distressed city in America, with 52% of the population considered economically distressed.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said she had to “go vote,” even though she could have talked as she walked to an elevator down the hall. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) didn’t even let HuffPost get the full question out before saying, “I don’t do hallway interviews.” Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) said he had to “run to a meeting” and disappeared into an elevator. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) listened to the question and, with a blank look, said, “I’m not doing any interviews.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) — chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, where majority support is needed to advance the nomination — attempted to shield himself from cameras by raising “a binder to cover his face” while exiting the Senate chamber on Wednesday. He opposes the prospect of even meeting Obama’s potential nominee, a hard-line stance Democrats hope to exploit during Grassley’s re-election fight later this year.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) dodged questions about a potential backlash toward Republicans for vowing to block Obama’s Supreme Court pick before the president has even named one.

“I’ll let Sen. Grassley talk about it,” Flake said.

snip

And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who drew the line in the sand on potential Obama nominees within hours of Scalia’s death, put an exclamation point on his party’s opposition. He skipped town on Thursday afternoon, even though the White House had attempted to arrange a meeting between the president, McConnell and Grassley that day.

I have my complaints about Girl Scouts, mostly relating to the changes that have been made to the actual program that I think discourages volunteers and reduces girl involvement, but they are far and away better than the Boy Scouts, which I point out to my mother every time she starts bitching about the changes, particularly as it relates to buying Girl Scout cookies.

Which I’m not doing this year, but that’s most because they haven’t been at the grocery store when I have been, and losing weight.

(I did my 13 years of scouting and earned both my Silver and Gold Awards.)

When I was confirmed, we went to dinner afterward with another family whose daughter was also confirmed. The conversation started with, ‘Who does that bishop think he is in his ruby slippers, with his gold-encrusted staff, telling the kids to emulate Christ?’ and ended up with me being an atheist a couple years later.

I have so much more respect for the girlscouts than I do for the Catholics. And I’ve never been a girlscout.

Tonight: Marco & Ted Must Man Up

For several weeks now, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz have behaved like children to one another […]

They need to take the same side in Texas tonight: against Trump.

CNN is going to try to provoke argument between Cruz and Rubio. They need to not take the bait. Instead, they need to focus all their energies on throwing Donald Trump off his game.

Despite Trump’s win in South Carolina, we know Cruz was able to damage Trump there and drag his polling down.

[…]

Oh yes, Cruz damaged Trump so badly … that Trump took all the delegates.

Too bad the title of “DMOTI” is already taken.

I like how Erick thinks Cruz’s fragile ego would take working with Rubio, an establishment man all the way who he probably can’t stand. I think Cruz would sooner go back to kissing Trump’s ass than to help Rubio.

All these nature photos are making me think about the book on color origins that I was reading (and very much enjoying) last night. The first chapter was about ocher and the second, which I finished last night, was about brown & black pigments.

The sheep in the photo above reminded me of the author talking about the discovery of a graphite deposit in England and how they used to mark their sheep with it, but for a long time it was very expensive & important for military weapons (cannonballs—who knew?) therefore it was strictly regulated.

Anyway, the other thing was prehistoric cave paintings, many of which are quite beautiful. After reading about the one in Altamira (Spain) I went over to Wikipedia and it said there were deposits of artifacts from c. 18,500 years ago and between c. 16,500 and 14,000 ago indicating human occupation, but the for the 2,000 in between c. 18,500 and 16,500 years ago it was apparently only inhabited by wild animals.

My brain froze right there. Forget trying to wrap my head around the idea of 18K or 16K years ago, the notion that the period when it was unoccupied by humans is the length of time since Jesus walking around (presuming you believe he did) until now. The length of time between the Roman Empire and now. I just…. that’s like 1/3 of our entire recorded human history. It makes it look like a little blip, like an apartment that was vacant for a few months or something. Gah! My brain melts when I try to think about it.

Yeah, I know we humans are really latecomers WRT the rest of the world, but still… it just does not compute. There’s someones hand print on the wall, someone who had a life just like me, except it was 18,000 freaking years ago. I can’t fathom what his or her world must have been like, and those aren’t even the oldest cave paintings. It makes me feel all splodey-headed.

Oh wow, check it out—these are even older than the other ones mentioned in my book (Lascaux, Chauvet, etc.): A Journey to the Oldest Cave Paintings in the World

Erick son of Erick has been crying about Trump as unrelentlessly as Beck, but Beck has a much, much bigger audience.

Son of Erick writes:

[…]

It is time for Republicans to give serious consideration to an exit strategy from their own party if Trump is successfully able to take it over. Not doing so will be destructive to Republicans down to the local level. Guilt by association with Trump will have serious repercussions for all Republican elected officials and public figures.

Those who can should begin plotting a strategy into a third party now. The groundwork and funding process need to begin right now. Republicans who are complicit in foisting the dangerous combination of tribalism mixed with nationalism on this country will deservedly see their party wind up in tatters.

Our country must come before our party and that requires all Republicans work together to stop Trump, including building a third party.

We hope.

re: #97 Charles Johnson

Apparently there are no more free language translation APIs on the web. Both Google and Microsoft now charge money to use their services.

I used a free web translation service fairly recently for exploring some wierd blog postings that were in Arabic, but posted on a tech-oriented Aussie website. My initial explorations suggested the website might have been exploited for info exchanges by tear-owe-wrists. I used the translation service sparingly, just for a sampling of some of the posts, and the subject lines, content, and timing of the posts only increased my suspicions. I also considered whether authorites likely already had the site under surveillance, or whether it might be some sort of honeypot, aside from the legit reasons for the site. (It’s fairly old, but apparently not looked after closely by the webmaster.) Finally, I decided against taking any action, as I didn’t want to be drawn into a shitstorm of due and undue process.

The last time I gave into the “See Something, Say Something” meme was the week of Desert Storm. I saw a fuel tanker truck that was parked in front of a daycare center, with the engine idling, but the driver was absent. Called FBI from work soon after to report what I’d seen. Twenty or so minutes later, a well-dressed man presented as a customer, made inquiries about the nature of the business, which I answered. He also asked me my name, the phone number of the business, etc. He left without identifying himself as FBI. Had he done so, I may have been able to provide more info.

It turned out that there were also a couple banks in the shopping center next to the daycare, so the truck driver simply doing his banking is *probably* the entire explanation for the situation I reported. Sadly, I learned later that the FBI also visited the daycare, and the nice lady who managed it died of a heart attack that day.
