Tech Note: A PHP Function to Strip Specific HTML Tags and Attributes

Parse those tags, mama

Every once in a while I come up with a bit of code that does something well enough I think it’s worth sharing, especially if it performs a function commonly used by lots of programmers, with a method that doesn’t already have hundreds of results in a Google search. And here’s one of those bits; maybe this will come in handy to another coder out there on the Internets, searching in vain for a good routine to parse tags and attributes.

For a long time I’ve been using a function to “sanitize” user input (e.g. comments and LGF Pages) to ensure no malicious code ever gets posted either on purpose or by accident. But I also allow certain HTML tags, and certain attributes for those tags.

The problem with the function I was using is that it employed regular expressions to parse the HTML, and that’s just a big freaking headache — inflexible and fragile. If you search a site like Stack Overflow for info on parsing HTML with regular expressions you’ll see tons of comments telling you “DO NOT DO THIS.” But the code worked well enough for a long time — until I started needing to allow HTML5 “data” attributes inside some tags.

Data attributes typically look like this:

data-conversation="none"

The word “data” is followed by a hyphen and then a variable name for the type of data involved. And that’s where my old attribute parsing function started to become a real hassle to use, because it was unable to deal with that variable part of the name easily, and I needed to add every type of data attribute I used to a list as they came up.

So today I came up with a vastly improved function that uses PHP’s DOMDocument library to actually build a Document Object Model out of the HTML code, then find the tags and attributes the right way instead of the bad old regex way, and remove everything except the tags and attributes I want to leave in place.

The new approach lets me use a regular expression only to match all types of data attributes — not to to find those attributes inside a big pile of HTML code. The task of finding the tags and attributes is handled by the XPath syntax of PHP’s DOMDocument methods.

Without further explanation, here’s that new function. It takes a string of HTML to “sanitize” and two arrays as parameters; the arrays are a list of the allowed tags, and a list of the allowed attributes. Note that if “href” or “src” attributes are allowed, the function checks to see if the value of the attribute is Javascript code, and changes it to “#” if so.

function stripTagsAttributes($html, $allowedTags = array(), $allowedAttributes = array('(?:a^)')) {
	if (!empty($html)) {
		$theTags = count($allowedTags) ? '<' . implode('><', $allowedTags) . '>' : '';
		$theAttributes = '%' . implode('|', $allowedAttributes) . '%i';
		$dom = @DOMDocument::loadHTML(
			mb_convert_encoding(
				strip_tags(
					$html,
					$theTags
				),
				'HTML-ENTITIES',
				'UTF-8'
			)
		);
		$xpath = new DOMXPath($dom);
		$tags = $xpath->query('//*');
		foreach ($tags as $tag) {
			$attrs = array();
			for ($i = 0; $i < $tag->attributes->length; $i++) {
				$attrs[] = $tag->attributes->item($i)->name;
			}
			foreach ($attrs as $attribute) {
				if (!preg_match($theAttributes, $attribute)) {
					$tag->removeAttribute($attribute);
				} elseif (preg_match('%^(?:href|src)$%i', $attribute) and preg_match('%^javascript:%i', $tag->getAttribute($attribute))) {
					$tag->setAttribute($attribute, '#');
				}
			}
		}
		return (
			trim(
				strip_tags(
					html_entity_decode(
						$dom->saveHTML()
					),
					$theTags
				)
			)
		);
	}
}

There are a couple of gotchas with using PHP’s DOMDocument library I should mention:

  1. If you're parsing a fragment of HTML code instead of an entire page, and it doesn't have a character encoding tag, DOMDocument will assume the text is encoded in ISO-8859 instead of the much preferred UTF-8. So this function uses the mb_convert_encoding function (line 7) to convert any Unicode characters into HTML entities before loading the code fragment, then uses html_entity_decode (line 32) to convert the entities back into characters when the parsing is finished.
  2. The second gotcha is that when you're parsing an HTML fragment, DOMDocument always adds a DOCTYPE, <html> and <body> tags to the fragment, and you can't disable this "feature." So after parsing, my function uses strip_tags a second time to remove those extra unneeded tags.

Oh yes, and one more thing; this is what the two arrays of tags and attributes look like for our comments; notice that the last item in the $commentAttributes array is a simple regular expression that matches any type of data attribute:

$commentTags = array(
	'b',
	'i',
	'a',
	'strong',
	'em',
	'blockquote',
	'div',
	'p',
	'br',
	'strike',
	'del',
	'sup',
	'sub',
	'code',
	'pre',
	'span',
	'img',
	'button',
);
$commentAttributes = array(
	'href',
	'rel',
	'target',
	'src',
	'width',
	'height',
	'class',
	'data-\S*'
);

There are more sanitization measures in place when comments are posted, by the way; for example, images can only be embedded in comments if they’re uploaded and hosted at LGF, otherwise they’re transformed into links to the external images. This is to prevent anyone posting malicious images that contain code, porn, etc.

It is ludicrous for Bernie Sanders to expect that he would be able to get the levels of support that will apparently need after being physically absent from out communities for 50 years only to come back for a vote.

Sanders is doing “well” in the upstate (44% of the vote in Anderson County, 42% in Pickens, 39% in Oconee) and upscale suburban counties (36% in Lexington County outside Columbia, 33% in Horry County/ Myrtle Beach, 31% in York over the border from Charlotte). On the other hand, several black belt counties have Hillary over 90%.

You know I don’t care who you support or don’t support. Though too many people on here make assumptions about you.

What is more important is that you have been saying what you’ve been saying for a long time — my problem is that I don’t know whether some folks can or will hear you, me, or anybody else who is speaking from a black perspective — and before someone comes in to say “well you don’t speak for all black folks” — that’s true too. Every black person in America has a pov — we will see an aggregate of those SC pov’s in a few hours.

And as a reminder, Horry was the only county Clinton won in 2008.

Dominick Dunne’s full reporting of the trial for Vanity Fair.

Vanity Fair’s special correspondent, whose career covering murder trials began after his daughter was killed, was one of only two journalists with a guaranteed seat for every day of the O.J. Simpson trial. He was the conscience of the courtroom, a confidant to players on both sides of the case, and an inimitable, irresistible chronicler of the proceedings. Revisit his dispatches in this archival treasury.

Ku Klux Klan rally in Anaheim erupts in violence; three stabbed, 13 arrested

Three people were stabbed, including one who was critically wounded, and 13 were arrested when a Ku Klux Klan rally in Anaheim erupted in violence Saturday, police said.

A small group of people representing the Klan had announced that it would hold a rally at Pearson Park at 1:30 p.m., police said. By 11 a.m., several dozen protesters showed up at the park to confront the Klan.

About an hour later, several men in black garb with Confederate flag patches arrived and were escorted by police around the edge of the park.

Violence erupted and some of the protesters could be seen kicking a man whose shirt read “Grand Dragon.” At some point, a protester collapsed on the ground bleeding, crying that he had been stabbed.

A Klansman in handcuffs could be heard telling a police officer that he “stabbed him in self-defense.” Several other people were also handcuffed.

A nice analysis of the twists and turns of the insane site Free Republic.

Free Republic is now almost fully in the Trump camp. Rubio supporters who were barely tolerated before are now zotted on sight, and Cruz supporters are getting their threads pulled, posts erased, and accounts temporarily suspended, while the most vile attacks on Cruz are passively encouraged by administration. Despite assurance otherwise, Jim Robinson has made his decision, and it is only a matter of time before Cruz fans will need to evolve or be purged.

The Free Republic birther evolution is both hilarious and indicative of how Free Republic is a 1984ish pseudo society. Free Republic was the heart of birtherism, with thousands of birther articles and breathless discussions with thousands of posts about every stupid filing and Orly blog post. The birther banner was on top of the forum for easy access, and anyone who questioned birthers a little too much was on thin ice.

But sometime in late 2014, Free Republic realized that Cruz will be running and suddenly Jim Robinson declared that birtherism was no longer welcome. People who were pushing the same tired “2 citizen parents” crap for 6 years, have suddenly found themselves outside the emperors favor. There was never an explanation, or rationalization, just a declaration of the new party line and a zot to anyone who didn’t fall in line without questions. 99% of birthers simply obeyed, the few that tried to reason or fight it were unceremoniously purged. The birther banner on top of forum simply disappeared one day.

But with Trumps ascendancy and his repeated use of birther rhetoric, Jim Robinson changed his mind yet again. Now all the birthers are out of the woodwork again, using arguments against Cruz that would have gotten them banned several months ago. Birther posts and racist dog whistles are all over every presidential politics thread and encouraged by administration.

In order to survive on Free Republic you do not need to be super conservative, in fact it is pretty obvious that current favorite Trump is a politically centrist authoritarian with a long history of supporting left wing causes and candidates. Rather to avoid the zot, one must ALWAYS be in tune with what management thinks and support it unquestionably and enthusiastically. Nothing can be more Orwellian than this “Free” Republic.

This has happened nearly every election when “Hell No Jim Robinson” changes his mind and all of his earlier positions are wiped from the memory bank. Woe be to any Freeper who forgets this.

Very similar to his “feud” with Fox, now that I think of it.

Trump is playing his followers for the fools they are, while assuring the people in his financial class that it’s all a show and they’re all going to make a shitload of money out of it.

Yes, Trump voters are right. If Donald Trump gets the Republican nomination for President and conservatives sit it out, Hillary Clinton will get elected.

That is the point of getting the disclosure out there in the primary that we won’t vote for Donald in the general. Trump voters need to understand that a Hillary Presidency will be on them. If they want to gamble that they can get Donald across the finish line without us, let them. It is their choice.

Bernie is what Bernie is.

This nomination cycle was all about making Clinton the nominee. The DNC took one from the playbook of the RNC here - nominate the next one in line.

If it were any other time I think this would be disastrous. But the GOP looks like they are quite capable of tearing themselves apart, so the Democrats may skate by this time.

But I worry about one thing - eventually there will be another recession. Probably in the next President’s first term. Even if Hillary wins (and she can beat Trump), the midterm election may see a reversal of fortunes and we’ll be right back to where we’ve been the last two years, with an obstructionist Republican Congress and a Democratic President seen as Satanic by a large share of Republicans.

It is scripted. It’s the same script from ‘08, just earlier in the season because she’s already begun to pull away from Bernie when 8 years ago it was still a pretty hard fought race. Now will begin all the talk about how she, like Obama before her, has to “bring the party together” and make sure that Bernie’s supporters feel needed so they don’t just sit home or vote third party.

The fact that nobody is saying this shit about Trump speaks louder, i.e. nobody really expects Republicans to sit at home and pout on Election Day.

Yep, we’re seen as “settling” for her or allowing the “establishment” to choose the candidate for us. We’re just too dumb or lazy to realize how great a guy Bernie is, that if we just took five minutes to read up on him then we’d be an instant supporter of his. With the money he has been raising he can keep running for quite awhile. Realistically, Hillary will build up a virtually insurmountable lead on Tuesday.

Don’t count on that being true. Bernie spent nearly $35 million in January while raising $21 million. He ended the month with $14.7 million cash on hand, down from $28.3 million on December 31.

At that Bern rate (sorry), his campaign will be broke within a week.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that his campaign is no longer boasting about how much money it’s taking in from small donations, or really at all. The obvious answer would be that the donations are beginning to drop off just as the heaviest period of campaigning begins.

Highly likely. But at least she will be there to wield a veto pen.

I changed and voted for Clinton. But no one is saying the obvious: Bernie was never going to play in a state where “socialist” equals cloven feet and horns. It’s a bit funny for me to hear all the “bernie bros are this” and “DK is that” when the comments here are increasingly little different in analytical tone. I don’t know a damn thing about Killer Mike, and I’ve long thought Cornell West, who early on may have had some important things to say, but I think a fool for his jealous sanctimony over “Brother” Obama, but plenty of other thoughtful and important black leaders have come out for Bernie. This idea that he’s picked up Killer Mike as a cynical ploy is beyond stupid.

He may be a one-message candidate (and that’s why I ultimately can’t support him), but that message is important. I hope it pushes HRC past her comfort zone. God knows I love Obama, but even his administration has done little to curb the growth of the financial services influence. So, Go Bernie! Push the agenda so that our candidate Clinton can speak in the general to those concerns as if they were natural.

That’s just it, we Hillary supporters have just been taken for granted by the Sandbaggers, the assumption that if he won the nomination then we’d fall in line and vote for him. Not a one has ever tried to make a serious effort to bridge the gap. In their minds, either you vote Bernie or you’re not a “true” progressive. Any Hillary supporters who opposed him might as well be Republicans or a shill for “corporate interests.”

And some of the kos berniacs are gigantic drama queens:

And to see this good man, this exceptional human being within the constellation of political personalities being maligned within the Democratic Party for no reason other than that his hopeful vision stands in the way of another Democrat’s personal career ambitions, it creates a feeling of moral outrage within me that I cannot contain…

But what I am seeing is that this man and his extraordinary character and wisdom need to be defended from the calumny that has been voiced against him…

Donald Trump would have dismissed both such men as losers.

Hell, Trump would have mocked MacArthur had footage existed of MacArthur diving into a ditch in New Guinea after Japanese mortar fire started landing nearby when in fact MacArthur was just being prudent and had directed those around him to take cover as well.

Indeed. You are part of the Democratic base if you will crawl over broken glass to vote against the Republicans at every opportunity.

That is how the GOP base is defined (with parties switched), and there’s no reason to define the (D) base any differently.

Hah! I’d like to see who would be braver in the brothels of Manhattan where the Donald experienced “combat.”/

MacArthur wasn’t the type to stray, though he did live in the Waldorf-Astoria after leaving the Army. The suite he and his wife shared (and that she continued to stay in until she died a few years ago) was on the floor right below the suite occupied by Herbert Hoover, the man who had made MacArthur Army Chief of Staff.

A more relevant comparison is that while Donald Trump did somewhat well in a military-style high school, Douglas MacArthur graduated from West Point with no demerits, at the time one of only three cadets to accomplish that feat (Robert E. Lee was one of the other two). So looking at it from that angle Trump is left in the shade again.

Yes, but that shouldn’t be held against MacArthur. He knew as well as anyone that the one critical task of the Pacific Theater he could not take the lead on was the elimination of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and he accepted this. But at the same time, he was correct in believing that his Return to the Philippines on Leyte in October of 1944 would prompt the IJN to give battle and thus hand the uSN the chance to finish the Japanese off. So it proved when the USN triumphed in the 4-part Battle of Leyte Gulf, but it was a narrow run thing.

Kevin Drum over at Mother Jones is basically saying it’s lights our for Bernie:

Did Bernie really lose 30 points of support in the past two weeks? That’s what the polls seem to show. But why? And how did the press not pick up on this? Most of the coverage I’ve seen has suggested that, sure, Hillary is going to win, but she’s really being pressed in the black community and Bernie could do better than expected. But according to the exit polls, she ended up winning 84 percent of the black vote. And perhaps even more worryingly for Bernie, she even crushed him among voters who agree that our economic system favors the wealthy. That’s his wheelhouse, and he won only 30 percent of their vote.

We’ll know more after Tuesday, but this doesn’t look good for Sanders. If Hillary racks up a big win on Super Tuesday, she’ll be so far ahead in the delegate count she’ll be almost mathematically unbeatable. At that point, it will be pretty hard for him to justify staying in the race.

This article argues Bernie should stay in the race, though not because he can still win the nomination.

Indeed, Sanders’ campaign can serve as a base for other left-wing efforts to shape the Democratic Party. Now is the time to endorse down ballot candidates, pressure less liberal Democrats, build a policy agenda, and lay a foundation for future candidates. In short, now is the time for Bernie Sanders to construct a Sanders-wing of the Democratic Party that will push and advocate for social democracy.

Politics never ends and this Democratic primary is just one battle. If Sanders loses, it doesn’t mean he has to forfeit the war.

I completed a crocheted top today. It’s made out of a DK/sport weight cotton/linen yarn. I made a number of modifications to it, such as making the shoulders wider, and the armholes and neckhole smaller. (I wanted to wear this to work and in its original configuration, I would have been worrying about underwear showing all day long.) I thought it was pretty clever the way I went in and crocheted three rows of fill-in shells in the armholes before attaching the sleeves. But I’m finally glad I found a use for the 10 skeins of cotton/linen yarn I bought on sale years ago.

It’s only two primaries, for sure, but the other thing tonight’s primary does is end the “Sanders is leading in the popular vote” theme from the end of Nevada: en.wikipedia.org.

I’m also trying to figure out how to turn this idea into a Daily Kos diary: Real people voted in the primaries and caucuses. People need to watch getting so invested in a theory, such as the Democratic party being owned by Wall Street, that they fail to see that people actually voted.

I’m just a bit too tired to string out long thoughts. I’m in the Rick Perry part of the evening: I can think of two examples, but can’t come up with a third.

So I’m getting ready to go lie down and read, but if anyone’s interested there’s a new book about slavery that looks at its history from a different perspective and it’s on sale right now for $3.99. I grabbed it as it was on my Kindle wish list, but I prolly won’t get to reading it for months:

The American Slave Coast: A History of the Slave-Breeding Industry

The American Slave Coast tells the horrific story of how the slavery business in the United States made the reproductive labor of “breeding women” essential to the expansion of the nation. The book shows how slaves’ children, and their children’s children, were human savings accounts that were the basis of money and credit. This was so deeply embedded in the economy of the slave states that it could only be decommissioned by Emancipation, achieved through the bloodiest war in the history of the United States. The American Slave Coast is an alternative history of the United States that presents the slavery business, as well as familiar historical figures and events, in a revealing new light.

The economy of many colonies and of the early US relied on slave labor.

Relatively few (compared to South America) slaves made it to the 13 colonies or the US, but the population of slaves grew by breeding.

That’s why, on all those TV shows which are modeled on “Maury”, when an African American takes a DNA test they end up with American cousins who distinctly think of themselves as “white”.

All of us with colonial American ancestry probably have very many African American cousins 3rd through 10th or so.

The use of slave labor on Caribbean islands also required quite a bit of breeding… and descendants have also migrated north.

So yes, it’s not something about which the average American probably spends much time pondering.

re: #411 EPR-radar

So these enthusiasts want to fight a two front war against both the GOP and the oligarchy simultaneously? This is a recipe for disaster.

The GOP will kill us all a hell of lot faster than the oligarchy will, so perhaps we should wait on the oligarchy issue until the GOP is not such a clear and present danger.

And I’m trying to figure out how Clinton = Oligarchy.

re: #414 freetoken

The economy of many colonies and of the early US relied on slave labor.

Relatively (compared to South America) slaves made it to the 13 colonies or the US, but the population of slaves grew by breeding.

On that note, I think I remember hearing that Obama may have had some distant African-American ancestors on his mother’s side which makes sense given he has colonial American ancestry.

Yep, they were the same way 16 years ago. There was no difference between the Dems and Reps they said. They were both the same corporate party they said. So they voted for Nader, and we got eight years of Dubya.

Big business interests have far too much influence and power in the Democratic party, IMO.

However, the two parties are not even close to being the same, even on economic issues. On social issues and identity issues the two parties differ dramatically.

So anyone who seriously says the two parties are the same is being an idiot.

Jocelyn says that obviously one would want to hang out and potentially partner with someone who also appreciates such traits. For her, Sanders supporters tend to be “compassionate yay-sayers … people who give a damn about other humans and the planet, and value honesty.”

She adds, “The last guy I went out with was also an enthusiastic Bernie supporter. We met offline. It didn’t work out between us for the long run, but he is one of the nicest people I know. ‘Does Feel or Does not Feel the Bern’ is one of the most effective filters I know to sift through a whole lot of humans and find a lot of decent ones. It’s shorthand for ‘empathetic, honest person, concerned with the future of the world.’”

Ayep. The Sandbaggers are so out of touch with reality, they think revolution will just trickle down. Bernie gets elected, leading to protest elections which will wipe out all of his opposition in Congress so he can pass all the legislation he likes. And the same wave of revolution will then move to the states and turn them into socialist paradises.

If you watch Dr. Gates’ Finding Your Roots, you will see many African American males who have European Y chromosomes.

And that tells the story all by itself.

There’s no such as a “pure race.” Hell my results indicated that I have some extremely distant Middle Eastern and Central Asian traces in my DNA. I have no idea from which parent or where or when but I have no doubt that I have some ancestors that came from Asia as recently as 1000 years ago or even closer. I’m not “proud” to be white. I’m a European-American with roots in many countries. The roots I do know about I do have pride in the culture but not a “Hey I’m better than you because I’m X and you’re Y.”

I suspect fewer, though, than their family stories project.

Claiming “Indian” ancestors was a way for someone to “pass” who looked mostly white but had features that didn’t look northern European.

GOP gerrymanders should not be assumed to be invulnerable. In fact a black swan event like Trump as the GOP nominee is exactly the kind of thing that might put some of those gerrymandered seats in play.

I’m absolutely sure that Hillary Clinton will have people look into this, if she is the nominee, and it would be in character for her to put both money and time into winnable House races.

Sanders does not appear to think along these lines.

Honestly, I think that’s because Bernie really does view his “revolution” as being about him. You go through his history and you find again and again that the man views everybody who is not on the exact same wavelength as him as an enemy. And he’s made it clear that he doesn’t it as his job to campaign for other progressive candidates, going so far as to threaten the end of an interview in order to avoid answering why he wouldn’t support other progressive candidates. I would not be surprised if, after it becomes mathematically impossible for him to win the nomination, he goes totally scorched earth on the DNC.

I hope not. I think the best to hope for is that Clinton wins a convincing victory so they can’t claim foul. That is one of my biggest problems with him however though. I am really bothered by the fact he won’t campaign for other candidates. That doesn’t show leadership to me and I think you or someone else pointed out that he raised seven million bucks in a re-election he won easily.

Hillary’s been raising money for the party for months, money that will help down ticket races in vulnerable states where the DNC could make gains not only in the Senate, but potentially in the House.

Bernie’s response so far from inquiries has been (paraphrased) “we’ll see about it once we win the nomination.” He doesn’t seem to consider it his job to worry about anybody but himself.

That is one of the reasons I’m supporting Clinton. If a single person could change everything, Obama’s victory plus 60 seats in the Senate should have changed things. Instead, everything was fought for tooth and nail.

As for Sanders supporters, I’m going to call their statements idiotic, but not get too much into the why of those statements. Most Sanders supporters are going to vote for the Democrat. It’s the fact that there’s so little difference between the candidates that makes every perceived slight seem so far out of proportion to the actual event.

Exactly and Bernie and his supporters seem oblivious to why those elected officials have been gravitating her way. I don’t know if it’s a purity thing with Bernie or just not understanding that being President is about more than just him but it really makes me question his leadership skills. Bernie wants to re-create the magic that Obama had in 2008 without working with other Democrats to accomplish that. He just wants to be purer than everyone else and it’s not going to work. For that reason alone, I’m glad that Clinton’s about to get in good position on Tuesday.
