“Which… makes them not really shenanigans at all.”

I want to be snarky, but really I’m just grossed out that this attempt at insult comedy is basically just yet another representation that Donald Trump is now steering the GOP narrative.

The thing about right wing “humor” is… it isn’t really humor. It’s just another way they try to establish dominance over their enemies.

I didn’t get Rubio’s implication. Then again, English is my second language.

I think it’s a sad state of affairs that two top contenders for the highest office are basically trading fifth grade taunts.

I can’t wait for Trump to taunt Clinton with “You couldn’t keep your husband satisfied enough to not cheat.” I’m hoping the beat-down from that will be huge, though I know a few (conservative) women that will accept it.

Dennis? I find most conservative comics pretty lame since they don’t understand that satire, a key element of comedy is supposed to be poking fun at the powerful. Conservative humor usually involves belittling minorities. I remember Fox tried doing a conservative Daily Show and it just wasn’t funny. Now TDS was under Stewart certainly helped by the fact that Jon’s a hell of a comedian but conservative humor just doesn’t work IMO.

Yeah thought FT was talking about him. I remember he was on MNF briefly and it just wasn’t funny. He didn’t add anything at all and neither did Limbaugh when he was on. I laugh when Limbaugh’s called a satirist and I’m like please, Jonathan Swift was a satirist, Limbaugh’s a bullying chode who claims to be a man of the people while he lives a charmed existence flinging insults at children(remember he did call Chelsea Clinton a dog.).

Yep. IF you’re just being a dick as I see with many self styled conservative comics, you’re just being a jerk. Another point I’ve seen is that coemdy is about making fun of the powerful. Limbaugh calling Fluke a slut wasn’t that. It was a prominent radio broadcaster calling a young woman advocating for more widely available contraception for her friend who suffered from cysts.

“Just to drive him a little bit crazy, I took to referring to him as a “short-fingered vulgarian” in the pages of Spy magazine. That was more than a quarter of a century ago. To this day, I receive the occasional envelope from Trump. There is always a photo of him—generally a tear sheet from a magazine. On all of them he has circled his hand in gold Sharpie in a valiant effort to highlight the length of his fingers. I switched to AppleTV over the summer. My biggest gripe is that most of the apps require you register, and you have to have a cable/satellite provider to do that (and then some don’t have deals with all the providers). Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Showtime are great pay ones and combined will run you somewhere around $60/month. CBS also has a paid app now that includes their historical library that is either $5 or $10 per month. If you watch a lot of sports, it’s less than ideal (ESPN doesn’t offer a pay subscription yet, and the league pass programs still have local blackouts). I’ve worked around most of this by using my folk’s cable log in when I can.

I should also say, I’ve got the third generation AppleTV. I know the new one has changed some of the stuff, but I don’t know how much. Funny thing is, when I looked at pricing, I figured out that I could save a lot of money, even if I was buying a lot of the shows I watch via iTunes. That’s probably the best thing about AppleTV is that you can watch shows/movies you buy directly on your TV, and you can also airplay stuff from phones and iPads.

I have a feeling a few more networks are going to figure out the paid app system this year. And assuming they aren’t crazy, I wouldn’t even be opposed to paying for a few more.

clean the steak and season with a little salt and pepper

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet, high heat, put in the steaks, flipping often, for about 6-7 minutes.

Remove the steaks, reduce heat to medium. Add 3 more tablespoons of the olive oil, 2 tablespoons of mince garlic, and 6-8 anchovy fillets, stir gently until the anchovy dissolves, then add 4 tablespoons unsalted butter. Once the butter melts, add 1 tablespoon lemon juice.

Reduce heat to low, return steak to the pan and baste. Remove the steaks, slice along the grain of the steak into strips, then garnish with parsley and drizzle with the remainder of the pan sauce

Interesting. I saw him in Atlantic City in, I wanna say, 2000. Pre 9/11, at any rate. The show itself was really good, for the most part. There was this weird part in the middle where he basically turned into his current version; things about urging pediophiles to commit suicide and what not. Really out of character for his at-the-time stage persona, and just utterly out of sync with the performance.

It was not a complete surprise for me when he turned into Bill O’Reilly, Jr. post 9-11. The part about his writing partner splitting does complete the whole picture, though.

Richard Wadhams, a former chairman of the Colorado Republican Party, said there has been a growing acceptance of Trump in recent weeks among party leaders and rank-and-file activists alike.

“There’s a strong possibility that Trump is going to be the nominee, and a lot of Republicans are ready to accept that even though they’ve not been supporters of him,” Wadhams said. “The penchant to defeat Hillary Clinton will transcend any concerns about the way Trump has conducted himself.”

They will find ways to rationalize their support of Trump, because Hillary is so Evul.

That’s an inadvertent admission that the party really has a problem, but doesn’t want to look within for the source of that problem. It would rather continue to deny that Trump has tapped the racist, nativist and sexist elements that form the backbone of the Republican Party.

Also pretty ironic that this statement comes from a female governor who’s Indian-American.

Senator Ben Sasse’s “AN OPEN LETTER TO TRUMP SUPPORTERS” does not define what Senator Sasse means by “Constitutionalist”: —->

Given what we know about him today, here’s where I’m at: If Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee, my expectation is that I will look for some third candidate - a conservative option, a Constitutionalist.

Here are some nice tidbits from the letter:

Our Founders said that God gives us rights by nature, and that government is not the author or source of our rights.

Government exists only because the world is fallen, and some people want to take your property, your liberty, and your life.

Government is tasked with securing a framework for ordered liberty where “we the people” can in our communities voluntarily build something great together for our kids and grandkids.

Note: “we the people” can in our communities..

I think I know where he is coming from with this.

They should have never been given the kind of access and power they’ve acquired since the Reagan days. Extremists do not belong in a party billing itself as “mainstream.” They have poisoned the well. When the Senate Majority Leader says, without blinking an eye, that the Senate will block any SCOTUS nomination from the sitting president just because he’s the sitting president, things have gone seriously off the rails.

If there is a third party run from within the GOP camp, one wonders what will become of the Republican Party. Will it be the Extremism Party from then on, and the new third party the Corporate Business Buddy party? It’s both fascinating and painful to watch.

“the world is fallen” is an important phrase there. He’s alluding to the conservative Christian belief that people are basically evil, and only government (and belief in Gawd) keeps people from killing each other and stealing their shit.

AFAIK, that was not the attitude of the Founding Fathers, who rather saw unchecked government and religious bodies as evil, and who sought to find ways to keep them from fucking up the people’s lives.

The thing about humor is you know it’s funny when you see it. /apologies to Justice Stewart.

That the entire GOP campaign has devolved into a dystopian sketch comedy of errors where the presumptive nominee will have an itchy trigger finger on the nuclear button is scary.

Racism, xenophobia and hatred aren’t disqualifying characteristics for the candidates (Trump, Rubio, or Cruz), but actually seen as positives by the GOP base.

So as much as the so-called right wing conservatives wring their hands over Trump (and trot out the no true conservative bs, or that he’s somehow a plant or that he couldn’t possibly win without Democrats crossing over), the fact is that Trump is on the GOP ballot, he’s winning decisively over GOP right wing extremists, and he’s doing it by being even more extreme than they are.

clean the steak and season with a little salt and pepper

Saving this one.

Meanwhile in Anaheim

Mayhem ensued Saturday as soon as the Klan members pulled up in a black SUV for an anti-immigration rally they had advertised in advance and pulled out signs saying “White Lives Matter.”

Dozens of protesters swarmed in and someone smashed a window. The SUV then sped away, leaving three Klansmen dressed in black shirts decorated with the Klan cross and Confederate flag patches outnumbered.

“(The counter-protesters) were so angry, they would have torn these folks limb from limb,” said Brian Levin, who directs the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. “I was afraid for their lives.”

In the same way, GOPers getting to put their own stamp on the court could eventually overturn Roe, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and Obergefell. Among others.

Heck, they could attempt to overturn the ACA outcome, finding it unconstitutional in all facets.

But saying that and finding cases that could do so are two separate things. Precedent is a strong thing, and finding a rationale to overturn a recently decided case is tough. Roberts isn’t likely to overturn the ACA or Obergefell case within years of the original ruling. That makes him look particularly bad - and politically motivated (which while he is political, it’s the appearance he’s concerned about).

In the same way, Trump claiming that he could overturn or loosen libel laws ignores how that actually works (libel is a state action, so he’d have to go through all 50 states and “fix” the laws there), and he too would have to find a case to overturn Supreme Court rulings on point.

Once again, Trump shows a disregard for the process - but that is what endears him to the GOP base, which wants to blow stuff up.

The same people who went establishment in 2012 are calling on the GOP and Trump to burn it all down when they didn’t get their way.

Not sure what Ruffini is trying to say here. Trump’s voters are Republicans. Trump has the support of a majority of GOP voters so far. Romney won the 2012 GOP nomination. Which candidate does Ruffini think the majority of 2016’s GOP voters voted for in 2012?

Meanwhile, banks are still ratf0*king people.

Overdraft Practices Continue to Gut Bank Accounts and Haunt Customers

Ms. Lemus is one of millions of Americans tripped up by overdraft practices, a murky corner of consumer banking that, despite a lot of hand-wringing in Washington, costly litigation and customer rancor, remains largely untouched by financial regulation.

(snip)

It is by no means a new problem. In a series of class-action lawsuits beginning in 2009 against more than a dozen big banks, customers accused banks of hiding a practice known as reordering. The practice, the lawsuits revealed, involved deliberately processing large transactions like mortgage payments first before taking out smaller charges, like a purchase of coffee — even if customers bought the coffee first. By arranging the order of transactions, the banks could maximize the number of overdrafts they charged. At the time, some banks defended the practice, arguing it ensured that large, important bills were covered.

(snip)

Such small fees can amount to big profits for the banks. More than 11 percent of TD Bank’s total operating income came from overdraft fees and other consumer service fees during the first nine months of last year. That is roughly five times the industry average, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation data compiled by SNL Financial, a research firm.

Noel said he believes African-Americans are too quick to vote for Democrats.

“American blacks are unsophisticated in understanding that they need to make people earn their vote,” he said. “We have had a batch of people who played like race was an issue. I don’t see anybody here wanting to hurt a black person or cut their opportunities or anything.”

It actually takes a lot to over turn a Supreme Court decision. Once the decision is handed down, then either congress or a state legislature must pass a law that contradicts the ruling in some way. Then you need someone challenge the law. It’ll take about a year and a half for the district court to rule. Then figure another year for a ruling by the court of appeal. And then the Supreme Court might not take the case. Which means you need to go through that process again in a different state (and possibly a different circuit).

They have been rather successful on this strategy with abortion because despite the general public being in the mushy middle, the politics tend toward a binary debate.

That they think NY would be in play with Trump versus Clinton ignores that Clinton handily won NY as Senator twice. First time, she won 55-43 over Lazio. She won reelection in 2006 with a 67-31 margin over Spencer.

Trump Jr. offers to pay for black celebrities to leave US when President Trump is elected

Trump Jr. predicted his father’s candidacy would draw “historic turnout for the GOP” because the real estate tycoon and reality TV star has attracted Americans who don’t typically vote.

Host Ainsley Earhardt pointed out that some celebrities “don’t think he’s going to make America great” — as Trump’s campaign slogan and baseball caps promise.

Fox News showed video clips of Whoopi Goldberg, Al Sharpton and Raven-Symoné — all of whom are black — vowing to move to another country if Trump or another Republican won.

“I’ll buy them their airfare,” Trump Jr. said, laughing. “I’m more than happy to chip in.”

That this is newsworthy at all is particularly shocking:

One has to wonder whether Thomas’ stoic silence on the Bench was due in large part to Scalia asking many of the questions Thomas might have had, and deferring to him instead.

Now that Scalia is gone, Thomas has to do the questioning himself, and reveal more about his own positions in the process (instead of being more inscrutable and using Scalia’s positions/questions as a proxy for his own stance).

re: #92 Kragar

clean the steak and season with a little salt and pepper

Sounds great. Reading your recipe it struck me that it’s only a couple of tbsps of Worcestershire and a splash of Tabasco from being a typical sauce for New Orleans barbecued shrimp. In fact it would make a nice combo dish. Once you’ve removed the steak for slicing just toss a dozen or two dozen Gulf shrimp, shells and all, in the pan and stir lightly until good and pink. Serve alongside the sliced steak with plenty of sauce and baguette style bread for sopping. Supply lots of paper towels.

From the SCPO’s WIKI article:

Medal of Honor action[edit]
On December 5 2012, American Doctor Dilip Joseph was captured, along with two Afghans, by the Taliban while driving back to their base in Kabul.[4] Byers’s team was selected by Marine General John Allen, who was the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan at the time to launch a rescue mission. The U.S. military had gathered intelligence on where Dr. Joseph was being held and the commanders were concerned that if they did not rescue the hostages quickly that they would be moved to a new hideout and/or killed as early as 9 December 2012.[3][1]
On the night of December 8, 2012, Byers’ unit was inserted by helicopter in Qarghah’i District of Laghman Province, eastern Afghanistan, from there they hiked over difficult terrain for more than four hours to reach the compound that the Taliban were holding the hostages at. Despite being under the cover of night, an armed guard spotted the SEALs within roughly 75 feet of the compound, Petty Officer 1st class Nicolas Checque sprinted forward, killed the guard and entered the compound, with Byers just steps behind.[2]
Inside of the compound, Checque, who was the point man, was shot by a Taliban fighter from inside the single room holding the hostages. Undeterred, Byers burst into the room, shooting dead an armed Taliban fighter. Byers tackled and straddled another insurgent who was scrambling to the corner of the room to get a rifle. Byers adjusted his night vision goggles to see whether he was the American hostage; then when Dr. Jospeh called out to Byers, Byers killed the insurgent he was straddling and then hurled himself on top of Joseph to protect him from harm. At the same time, Byers pinned another Taliban militant to the wall with a hand to the throat until another SEAL shot the militant.[3]
Once outside, Byers, the unit’s medic, turned his attention to Checque, spending the 40-minute flight back to Bagram Airfield, trying to resuscitate him, but Checque was declared dead at the American base. Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas D. Checque, 28, from Monroeville, Pennsylvania was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions.[5] [2][3]

An amazing man.

Off topic: As I read through the comments I find myself have to scroll up and down to re-read comments when there is a reply further down. For example I get to say, comment #80 and it is in reference to comment # 29. I have to go back to #29 so I can remind myself what it said. Is there an easier way to do this. Many time I give up.

I almost always use Quote when I reply to someone for that reason. The easier way is to right click on the response block and open it in a new tab/window to see the original comment. That’s especially helpful if you need to go back further (say comment 100 refers to 50 which refers to 38 which refers to 37 which refers to 10). You can then follow the thread all the way back in a separate tab/window.

The whole “Thomas doesn’t ask questions” thing has always kind of annoyed me. I’ve argued (and observed) appellate cases (nothing at the Supreme Court level, yet) and have had cold benches (hell, I’ve been in front of an appellate court that issued tentative rulings, and there were no questions involved). It’s not uncommon at all to get no questions from a trial court judge on a motion. Yes, cold benches are less common than they used to be, but they’re not unheard of. As I’ve always understood (hearing from people that know Thomas), his position has always been to let the attorneys make their arguments, that many of the questions would be answered during the arguments. Hell, there was a time when the incessant questioning was considered judicial showboating.

Inspectors reported finding outdated, expired, unlabeled, mishandled and improperly stored food, according to a summary posted on the health district’s website. The closure was first reported by KTNV-TV as part of a “Dirty Dining” segment focused on area restaurants.

While ready-to-eat food can be stored for up to seven days, inspectors at DJT reported finding the old caviar and yogurt, duck that dated back to June, veal stock and tomato sauce that was almost two weeks old, and expired peanut dressing and black bean chili.

Inspectors found no measures to destroy parasites in undercooked halibut and salmon, and noted that raw tuna was being improperly thawed. Icicles were found in a faulty freezer.

There’s a managerial component to being a president. As you say, it’s a very valid thing to judge Sanders by. And, honestly, his management of his campaign is evidence to consider for his managerial competence.

Exactly. I mean Bernie’s supporters and I include my own brothers in this seem to be acting like it’s just ideology. I really admire their passion but I just think they’re not seeing that there’s a lot of legitimate rumblings about whether he’s cut out for this job.

All lives do matter but the problem and BLM has been trying to say this, black lives haven’t mattered a damn to prosecutors like Bob McCulloch who was too busy seeing his office as an extension of the police department or the prosecutor in Staten Island who didn’t get the killers of Eric Garner.

That is my thought, too. A terrorist attack or some “exotic” epidemic outbreak would give him a major bump.

Or even a natural catastrophe with the accompanying breakdown of public services, followed by a total collapse of law and order over a large or densely-populated region, calling for marital law or a state of emergency would be enough to feed the flames of fear, mistrust and xenophobia.

The last few cycles the GOP nominee has gotten about 93% of the Republican vote in the general election. Figure that 7% goes 5% to the Democrat and 2% to some third party candidate. In a normal election, I’d say you could probably add another 5% to the Democratic vote, but with Clinton, I’m not sure. I still wouldn’t be surprised to see something around at least 12% defection from Republican voters (just not sure where it goes). I also wouldn’t be shocked to see another 3-8% of Republicans just not cast a vote for president (while voting for down ticket races)
