Jon Stewart may have retired from The Daily Show, but Samantha Bee and John Oliver are still bringing it like bosses. In this hilarious clip, Samantha explains what happens when Democrats don’t vote. And it’s not pretty. Also possibly NSFW.

The boring, who-cares midterm snoozefest that was the most important election of your lifetime.

Watch Full Frontal with Samantha Bee all new Mondays at 10:30/ 9:30c on TBS!

My 16 year old son has suddenly gotten interested in politics, and Samantha Bee is his introduction to political commentary. Not a bad place to start.

I love her. Both she and John Oliver are just great on their own. I totally miss Jon though. Sigh.

In GA news, there was a pick up truck in front of me this morning with two bumper stickers on the back window. 1) Trump: Make America Great Again and 2) A confederate flag (and I wish I was making this up) with the words…Fightin’ Terrorists Since 1861. And that right there is why we can’t have nice things. Though it is a good asshole sorting system I suppose.

He has a new show coming up:

TBS has given a series order to “People of Earth,” an ensemble comedy from Conan O’Brien’s Conaco banner that stars “The Daily Show” alum Wyatt Cenac.

The Warner Horizon TV series revolves around a support group for people who have been abducted by aliens. TBS announced the 10-episode pickup as part of its presentation Thursday at the winter Television Critics Assn. press tour in Pasadena, Calif.

Keeping an eye on the East Texas State Board of Education race…

“…The SBOE is a very strange political body. Its responsibilities concern very narrow, often technocratic, matters of curriculum, charter school approval and money management. Its meetings also perpetually verge on all-out circus performances, and not in a good way. Any one of its 15 members has the opportunity to derail the board, and Bruner, at least, seems up to the task. Asked by Breitbart Texas about her past assertions that President Obama was “a gay prostitute in his twenties” and that baby dinosaurs rode with Noah on his ark, she said, “I don’t intend to apologize for my opinions because I still believe my statements were accurate.”

I do not need to hear people cackling to know whether something is funny or not. It borders on insulting to her that TBS seems to think they need this to put her material over.

32
Testy Toad T  Mar 1, 2016 • 11:24:48am

Really, everybody ought to read that Vox article. Klein left out what I think is the money-quote:

If Trump loses the election, that will not remove the threats and social changes that trigger the “action side” of authoritarianism. The authoritarians will still be there. They will still look for candidates who will give them the strong, punitive leadership they desire.

And that means Donald Trump could be just the first of many Trumps in American politics, with potentially profound implications for the country.

And so the rise of authoritarianism as a force within American politics means we may now have a de facto three-party system: the Democrats, the GOP establishment, and the GOP authoritarians.

And although the latter two groups are presently forced into an awkward coalition, the GOP establishment has demonstrated a complete inability to regain control over the renegade authoritarians, and the authoritarians are actively opposed to the establishment’s centrist goals and uninterested in its economic platform.

It’s a damned hard thing to argue against, I think.

35
lawhawk  Mar 1, 2016 • 11:27:10am

The GOP has been intent to slash and burn the government for years, and now that there’s a candidate who’s explicitly stating this, the GOP is all “look at what Obama made us do.”

Nope. The GOP is bringing it on themselves, but there’s going to be a whole lot of collateral damage, and it will have a lasting effect on both sides of the aisle. So, I can’t agree with Willis.

Some of this is the result of failing to vote in midterms (and any off-year election for that matter), and some of it is the result of the GOP feedback loop of anger, hate, suffering, and dissatisfaction.

Here’s the thing. There’s always a chance Trump could win.

Here’s how: insufficient numbers of Democrats get out and actually vote to keep Trump from ascending to the most powerful position on the planet.

If everyone takes this for granted, people may choose not to vote figuring everyone else has it in the bag.

No - Democrats must not take it for granted, now or at any election. Vote as if your lives (and the lives of your kids and grandkids) depends on it. Vote in every election, presidential, midyear, off year and even the primaries.

They all matter.

Failing to vote can open up a can of worms. See, Trump, Donald J.

It freaks me out that there are so many people who might fall victim to a more polished The Donald at another point, even while the current iteration is unlikely to have a real shot in the general.

That and our system is, on a very fundamental level, really fucking fragile. Hillary is not a young woman. What if she had a stroke or something in October? Do I think the system is robust enough to keep Trump out of office?

I wish I could be as optimistic as you. If Trump does get the nomination, I get the feeling that his footsoldiers will be out en masse come election season in a full-throttle voter intimidation effort to make sure that non-whites don’t show up at polling places, and if they do, prevent them from going into the voting booths. Yes but it is all a charade and she will flip instantly once sworn in, dropping her mask and revealing the face of Sarah Palin, because reasons.

I have a sneaking suspicion a fair number of Sanders supporters were casting ballots for LUAP NOR four years ago.

re: #78 Bill and Opus for 2016!

It will be a scenario that we haven’t seen since the early 1960s.

My main concern is that some crisis could intervene, especially a terrorist attack that would really boost DT’s chances.

Even some sort of natural disaster that resulted in a suspension of services and law and order, and calls for a state of Emergency or martial law will get a lot of people riled up (and ready to shoot first and ask questions later).

Not all of them are from Columbus. In a way, I’m thinking not many of then were. They seem to be from all around Ohio and the one guy was from Anderson Indiana on the state border.

Whether he should be considered campaign materials, I don’t see how he could be legally.

I think Sasse from Nebraska is an exception to that. I think you’re right though. The ones in safe and far removed from re-election will be more vocal about Donald since they have that kind of leeway but up for re-election or in a hotly contested state. This is as much projecting what you want Republicans to be as what they actually are, IMHO. I think the fact that we’re already in yuuuuuugely uncharted territory shows that.

There will be a faction of super-Trumpists who will be very, very upset with anyone else in the GOP who does not share their total and undivided enthusiasm for their candidate. There will be wafflers and opportunists trying to make the best out of it, and even a small but visible anti-DT faction.

Not acrimonious at all. I just do not see any Republican, either due for election or not, saying anything disparaging about Trump if he wins. Just my view. Others are free to see otherwise. The track record is there. My humble opinion. Feel free to think otherwise.

re: #156 lawhawk

OT: I know you’re big on all things NYC, so I have a question: I came across a book on Amazon called Chief! about a former NYPD Chief of Detectives named Albert Seedman.

In reading about him I noticed that according to The NY Times he was “the first, last and only Jewish chief of detectives,” at least as of the time he died in 2013. I was gob smacked. How is that even possible? Okay, yeah, bigotry… but sheesh. I mean Jews have been in NYC at least as long as the Irish, maybe longer, no?

Albert Seedman, Chief of Detectives in New York for Short, Tumultuous Time, Dies at 94

“The Jewish cop was an alien in an Irish universe,” the crime novelist Jerome Charyn wrote in The New York Times in 2004. “Enter Albert Seedman, the first, last and only Jewish chief of detectives. It’s the 1970s and Chief Seedman is all over the place, tough, flamboyant and foul-mouthed, chomping on a cigar, appearing at the scene of important crimes. He seemed more Irish than the Irish, as if he had co-opted their territory, their language, their domain.”

Would I be correct in assuming he still holds the title of “first, last and only?”

re: #64 lawhawk

And I’ll add—just because you live in a solidly red or blue state, it doesn’t mean you can just vote for whomever and it won’t matter. Maybe not in the electoral college, but the popular vote matters as well—in terms of mandate, and on the off-chance that the horror of winning the electoral college while losing the popular vote exists.

Of course, anyone can vote for whomever they choose, but I’m hearing a lot of “Well, my state’s a done deal, so I can vote for (fill in name other than the eventual Dem candidate) and have a clear conscience.” In the primary, sure. But in the general I say, nope—every DEM vote counts—that’s my opinion. YMMV

In Kentucky I normally vote for the Democratic presidential candidate even if they have no chance of winning. If Bloomberg and/or a high profile conservative is on the ballot with Trump and Clinton, I might vote strategically. If Clinton has a good chance of winning (and its possible; with Perot on the ballot, Bill won Kentucky in ‘92 and ‘96) I will of course vote for her. But if Bloomberg is ahead of her in the polls, I might vote for him to try to keep Trump from winning Kentucky.

I really, really wanted to vote for Bernie this morning, but I couldn’t. We have a raving lunatic tea-party type (but I repeat myself) in my congressional district running against a very conservative, but establishment-type Republican. The nut job forced me to participate in the Republican primary just to vote against his sorry ass, since in this part of Texas, the primary is where federal and statewide offices are decided.
I ended up voting for Trump, as he is far, far less dangerous than Cruz, and I wanted to cut into Cruz’s margin of victory here (or Cthulu willing, increase his margin of defeat). Kasich is the most reasonable Republican running, but in Texas that simply means that he will not be able to crack the 20% barrier to receive any delegates. I stood in the shower for hours afterward trying to scrub off the shame.

Your math doesn’t work. A vote for Bloomberg or Clinton keeps Trump from winning. The only way your Bloomberg vote would help is if it convinced other voters to vote for him instead of Trump who weren’t going to vote for Clinton. Vote for her.

Edit: I take some of that back. I missed where you said if Bloomberg was ahead.

re: #84 Franklin

Seen on another blog, and I think, a pretty valid question:

Is Bill Clinton himself considered campaign material:

[Embedded content]

Is any other candidate’s spouse considered campaign material when they arrive at the polling place? One can argue ‘yes’ for all of them, but I’m not going to buy a special standard applied only to certain spouses.

EDIT: Missed that it wasn’t HIS polling place. Tugs forelock in apology. Still think the ‘same standard’ caveat applies, when they hash out what the rule is — true for one candidate’s spouse, true for all spouses.

Moore’s a fucking prick honestly. He likes to try to act like he’s this principled progressive activist and he supported Clark in 2004 who had no electoral track record to speak of simply because he thought nominating Clark would make the Democrats look tough on defense even though he called the war that Clark was the US commander during Clinton “waging the dog.” Plus his whole crap about how Obama doesn’t act black enough. Your post this morning had me concerned. But I am trying my best not to ask some of the Lizards WTF???

Elections can be hard to take watching your friends. But I tell myself it may be a bit like all the antsiness that was displayed around here about the Oregon occupation and why the Feds weren’t doing anything about it fast enough. That worked out quite nicely and I use it to remind me to keep some of my feelings bagged up and just wait for things to work their way out. I hope that works with this election…but damn…this is going to be a tough one.

My wingnut brother in Massachusetts must be in the throes of panic.
He started as a TRUMP guy.
Then he switched to Christie first; Rubio second.
So, when Christie dropped out, I guess it was Rubio for him.
But then Christie endorsed TRUMP, so hard to say.

I don’t usually much care for Borowitz’s humor, but I liked this one:

Trump Derailed by Obama’s Endorsement

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Adding a new wrinkle in an already unpredictable election year, Donald Trump saw his poll numbers plummet on Monday after receiving a surprise endorsement from President Barack Obama.

The long-awaited downfall of the abrasive billionaire came in startling fashion, as few had expected the President to offer a full-throated endorsement of Trump, especially on the eve of the all-important Super Tuesday primaries.

Praising the Republican front-runner during a nationally televised address, the President said that, despite media reports to the contrary, Trump shared his views on such important issues as immigration and religious tolerance. “In every way that matters, Donald and I are on exactly the same page,” Obama said, pointing to a framed picture of the billionaire on his Oval Office desk.

Concluding his endorsement with an emphatic closing argument, Obama said, “If you love me, vote for Trump.” […]

It isn’t necessarily about union scale. I don’t know about Connecticut, but the prevailing wage laws in Massachusetts apply to union or non-union companies doing work for the state. It was a way to push government projects to use union labor since if you are paying union rates you may as well use union labor to avoid any picketing etc. On the rare occasion that a non union shop can land a state job they are required to pay their employees the prevailing wage.

Not sure how Connecticut’s laws work or how things are different in emergency situations with out of state labor, but if connecticut was paying the prevailing wage and the guys aren’t getting it then the company is pocketing it and they have a legitimate gripe.

re: #343 EPR-radar

Furthermore, the GOP establishment has made the GOP base into the Trump-voting monstrosity that it presently is.

And worse.

There’s a positive feedback loop working here.

Even if Trump is nominated but somehow doesn’t win the election, his legacy will be that the next GOP candidates will have this Tea Party froth in which to swim.

Yeah protests never happened in the past. Never. Here’s something not politically correct for you Donald and your support. Y’all are fucking stupid and spend your days bitching about a past that never existed only in your minds.

Well it has become very clear that whatever TRUMP says is historic fact. I’ve never seen someone bullshit people on this scale. But that is what happens with no critical media or anything else.

If something about this all isn’t fixed and soon, this country is fucked. I normally don’t say crap like that…but Trump is giving instructions to bad people in how to really screw us.

re: #347 BeachDem

Open primaries here—albeit, they are held on different days. At least in the absentee/early voting #s, black Republican vote was 479 out of 60,478—less than 1%: Dems, 76%—38,961 out of 51,539. I believe the exit polls were about 55% AA in the Dem primary. Will have to double check>

Thanks.

I see Trump as the final yell in a part of the country that is dying out but I don’t know honestly anymore. He’s awakened an ugly element in our society for sure though.

This whole doing work thing is highly overrated.

The “getting paid” thing, on the other hand…

I really, really wish that Tweetdeck had like a temporary mute button, so you could mute people for a set period of time while current events are happening and they can get it out of their system and then you can resume following them.

re: #341 Nyet

He also retweets the antisemitic shit thrown at him by Trumpers, in order to complain about it. But why the complaining? He’s against PC, right?

I give up trying to figure this idiot out. Everyday it is something different. Up is down, then down is up and then he remembers he is never on the up and up.

I just want him gone. A mental ward and a straight jacket would be a start. This dude would be taken off the streets if he was in shabby clothes with disheveled hair and beard and saying this crap.

Is Walker just trying to make sure people know he doesn’t have small…hands?
