All I’m saying is, sometimes Ted Cruz creeps out into the Texas countryside and drains several goats of their blood.

Not all the time. Just once a fortnight or so.

Doubtless it must be infuriating to have his thoroughly marked hunting ground intruded upon by Donald Trump.

So eight wins, four losses, and roughly +200 delegates. I was hoping for a little better, but this should do. My vote will have to do its work on Saturday, but Hillary’s going to win easily here.

So sick of patronizing whtie bullshit. Jones knows who the KKK are and he knows they’re not leftists. There’s nothing leftist about white supremacy. Someone should remind Lord that the Republican Party had to distance themselves from Duke when he ran as a Republican. It’s true Duke has run as a Democrat before but he was actually elected as a Republican.

Home from the Colorado Caucus. Our precinct in a mostly-red suburban county had 52 voters — I’d estimate about 400 people there altogether for 7 or 8 precincts. The gentleman heading the cat-herding process commented that in 2014 a whopping 12 people showed up for his precinct, so he was happy to deal with the overflow.

Our precinct vote was 30 for Hillary, 22 for Bernie, which translated to 2 delegates for her, 1 for him going to the state convention in April. There was some discussion/debate about the candidates, but fortunately damped down quickly by our volunteer precinct chairman. The only people who took the offer to advocate for their candidate were Bernie supporters; unfortunately there was more dissing of H than persuasion for B — emails were mentioned, with one (older) lady saying that Hillary was a Republican and Bernie was a True Democrat, which did provoke my spousal unit to reply. Most of the rest of the Hills people shook our heads but didn’t try to engage.

It was an educational experience. I vote regularly but have never caucused before. Our lot got through the business and out the door early, where some of the other precincts were still in the attempt-to-persuade discussions.

So tomorrow morning I’m going over to Dem HQ to volunteer to input data from this exercise. The one thing we could all agree on was how important this election is — hang together or we shall most assuredly hang separately!

Now I have to go back and try to get through that 590+ thread back there, and see what’s happened elsewhere…

So even without the hated SD’s she still has a decent lead and honestly his failure to get the SDs is on him since he’s never shown a big desire to help other Democrats get elected or stay in office. You may not like the SD system but it’s one he should be aware of if he had high office aspirations.

The one I’m sort of watching right now is Alabama. Trump’s a given, but right now with 72% of the vote in, Cruz is at 20.8%, if he falls below 20% then it’s “Winner Take All” for the delegates.

Right. I am glad he’s touched about things like income equality. I just wish he would realize there are other factors at play. Agree with you about that too. A working class kid needs more affordable tuition far more than a rich kid.

If we could get it through, I would say yes. The wealthy are going to pay more in taxes to do this, so the one good way to sell it would be to have them get tuition for free as well. It would also be the only way to ensure that it doesn’t slowly get dismantled. It’s what’s saved SS, versus things like Medicaid, which get cut to no end in places like Texas.

The CBS talking headz were making a big deal about Trump winning the Texas counties on the border with Mexico, implying this was an endorsement of his “wall” policy.

Well, let’s look at those counties:

In Zapata county… Trump has a total of 34 votes
In Terrell county… “’ “” has 49 total votes
In Hudspeth county… Trump has a total of 7 votes.

In other words, CBS is doing that exaggeration by geography that the wingnuts always like to do with their maps.

Bernie’s platform would be dandy fi we had more people in this country who understood nuance. The otehr thing though is I really think he doesn’t see the big picture on some issues. Income inequality is a prolbem but it’s not the only problem.

The limit on Social Security deductions is just stupid. If you want to pay an employee $1 million, SS should be taken out of the total, with the employer matching it. Capital gains should be indexed for inflation and taxed as income after one year of holding the instrument whether it be a stock or a bond. Day traders can continue to screw themselves as the gamblers they are.

We are the People’s Republic of Travis County, but we have D and R primaries. This used to be an 80% Dem County, but then those rotten California carpetbaggers moved in.

True fact. When we bought our house in 1997, the dirt was valued at $25,000 and our property value was $145,000. Since we have no income tax in Texas, we have no control over what we pay on profit we haven’t made. The property tax that I paid this year was $9,130 on a piece of land that is now valued at $350,000.

Can I please have an income tax?

To be fair to her, she’s 35 years old and has been in the military since 2004. It’s a big part of who she is. Now what I think is fair considering that Bernie’s bros love attacking Hillary’s stance on LGBT rights is their new hero’s past stance that included even opposing civil unions. But I do see to her credit that she’s cosponsored a lot of LGBT friendly legislation since entering Congress. I don’t even think her endorsement of Sanders is baesd on principle, it’s based on her infighting with DWS. Shrug.

My sister-in-law drinks it, because she says she doesn’t like the taste of beer. I tried one of her Zimas once. It’s like sweet fruity near-beer. I suppose one could call it a “girly drink.” The local supermarket here sells something similar, called Rio, — not malt beverage based AFAIK — that’s popular with the female students at the uni. Tsingtao? It’s probably the best China offers. Most of the domestic beers are light lagers, and pretty much indistinguishable from one another. Rarely stronger than 3-4%. But craft beers are beginning to take off in the bigger cities, like Shanghai.

There is a kind of stout sold here, though. It’s passable, but not like Guinness or a UK stout.

Yeah Tsingtao. Traditional liquor is sorghum I want to say. If I remember my Taiwanese co-worker right, he said it was more like a wine. I really learned a lot about China and Taiwan from him. He was very good at explaining the nuances even though his own family had fled from the mainland. People like him and the two classes on China really helped shape my views on China. That’s baijiu, though it can be made from nearly any grain. Sorghum is the traditional source. The Chinese call it wine (baijiu = white wine), but we’d call it liquor in the states. Lowest alcohol content is 35% and highest can be 62%. The premium stuff is very drinkable, so smooth that you won’t realize its effects until you hit the floor. The common stuff varies in quality from drain cleaner to paint stripper, and will leave you wishing for death the next morning.

Yeah, personal experiences. More than once. I’m dumb that way.

Moutai is the baijiu exported to the States. It’s not premium, but better than the swill sold in the supermarkets in China.

He probably called it wine. I’m not sure about Taiwanese folks, but Chinese don’t really speak of liquor when referring to baijiu. It’s always wine.

If you want grape wine in China, you have to ask for putaojiu (grape wine) or hongjiu (red wine). For some reason, white grape wine is not very common here, and usually quite expensive — $15-$20 a bottle. Chinese red wine, though, is quite good — even the cheap ones. Like vin ordinaire in France.

The up-and-coming trend now is wine shops, selling imported wines from all over. My friends own one. The wife and husband both like wines, and he likes Cuban cigars. They’re also going to sell imported liquors, too, like whiskey, gin and so so on.

Looking at the Arkansas map is interesting. Rubio won the capitol metro area, and Wally-World up in the NW corner.

Trump won in the rural areas, but especially along the Mississippi, where he won overwhelmingly. This part of the state along the Mississippi has a relatively large African American population.

It would be interesting to do exit polls in these areas. I wonder why the Trump voters really voted for him.

I tried Rio once, too. Tasted like a wine cooler, but like Zima very sweet and fruity.

If i want something sweet and fruity, I’ll have a margarita or a piña colado, thank you.

Any other olds here remember HopNGator? It was gatoraid and malt liquor. Pretty ghastly. We’d order mass quantities in a bar, pour it into a pitcher and all grab straws to share it. Quick buzz—nasty stuff, but we were poor and dumb.

“Hop’n Gator Beer was put on the market by the Pittsburgh Brewing Company in 1969. It was developed by Dr. Robert Cade who also invented Gatorade. Hop’n Gator Beer was a mixture of beer and Gatorade with about 25% more alcohol content than standard beers. They got sued for trademark infringement and it got pulled from the market.

The official drinking age in China is 18, but no one pays any attention to it. One of my middle school tutorial students posted photos online of her drinking beer at her 13th birthday party. I was surprised she was so open about it. Drinking here is saved for special occasions, and students never have the weekly binge parties like they do in the States. It’s a very different drinking culture. Aside from the businessmen getting wasted on baijiu at important dinner meetings, most Chinese remain pretty sober 90% of the time.

Yeah, I lived in NY when I turned 18 (had a fake id at 17) then moved to Ohio, where you could only drink “low beer” until 21. HopNGator wasn’t around for long, and was probably fairly limited distribution out of Pittsburgh.

As I said, I remember it was a quick, cheap buzz—and now that I looked it up, I see why—25% MORE alcohol content than regular beers—yowza.

Reading history, it seems that kind of culture was common throughout the USA during the 1800s. People didn’t drink water much, and milk was for kids. Fruit juices, other than apple cider, were unheard of. So people drank beer, whiskey and rum. A lot of beer,w whiskey and rum. That’s how the temperance movement got started, as a way to make communities safe from drunken sots stumbling all over the place, creating havoc. It also led to the creation of soft drinks.

Prohibition was the ultimate goal of the temperance unions, and that was a total disaster. You can’t tell an entire nation to go cold turkey all at once.

Wisconsin Heaviest-Drinking State In Country, Study Finds

The study, which was published this month in the American Journal of Public Health, analyzed survey data collected by the Centers for Disease Control between 2002 and 2012 to suss out drinking patterns by county across the U.S. Using the data from 2012, it found that 12 percent of Wisconsin residents had reported engaging in heavy drinking in the previous 30 days.

Julia Sherman, the coordinator of the Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Project, said that these numbers may not be news for most Wisconsin residents, but they do provide valuable insight for each county to monitor their alcohol problems.

“We have known for some time that Wisconsin has a problem with alcohol,” said Sherman. “Clearly, this provides every community in Wisconsin a better tool to look at their own drinking locally and maybe take steps to remediate certain problems if they think they exist.”

I spent the next couple hours chasing after him. Then, I dreamt I was in prison huffing paint out of a paper bag in the basement of the prison with other inmates. I spent the rest of the evening trying to dispose of the bag without being caught by the guards.

Reading it now.

With its appeals to traditional values, the GOP has attracted a large number of authoritarians — people who want order and who fear outsiders and the unknown.

Authoritarians are thought to express much deeper fears than the rest of the electorate, to seek the imposition of order where they perceive dangerous change, and to desire a strong leader who will defeat those fears with force. They would thus seek a candidate who promised these things. And the extreme nature of authoritarians’ fears, and of their desire to challenge threats with force, would lead them toward a candidate whose temperament was totally unlike anything we usually see in American politics — and whose policies went far beyond the acceptable norms.

A candidate like Donald Trump.

I don’t see how the GOP is going to stuff this genie back into the magic lamp, short of a party split. The authoritarians are the ones that made John Boehner’s job as Speaker a nightmare, and if Trump loses, they will be out for blood (hopefully not literally) from the party leadership.

I’d like to know how exactly Trump reacts to a defeat. He spent a while whining about the Iowa results until he probably realised how miniscule the prize was.

I’ve driven that fast only twice. Once in an American car, which scared me shitless. The power steering got so jittery I had to slow down. And once in a BMW 2002, which was more reassuring but I only did it for a brief time, in case there be a state trooper hiding somewhere.

Most passenger car tires in the USA are only rated for 80 mph, I think. Running them for sustained periods at higher speeds risks catastrophic blowouts, with catastrophic results. American love their power steering, which reduces road feel, and suspensions tend to be on the soft, mushy side, which makes the car unstable at high speeds or with high lateral acceleration.

So yeah, I’d advise against driving that fast in the typical US automobile. (Especially on the crumbling Interstate highway system.)

Speaking of brains and such:

COMPOSING AND ARRANGING MUSIC PARTLY GENETICALLY DETERMINED

A new study identifies genome variants and pathways that contribute to composing and arranging in musically trained individuals. The study estimates the inherited proportion as 30% for these characteristics. Genes linked to composing and arranging suggest the role of the cerebellar LTD pathway, known to affect the acquisition of novel information and memory, as a common denominator for these cognitive activities.

The paper in PLOS:

Creative Activities in Music - A Genome-Wide Linkage Analysis

[…] Musical creativity is a complex phenotype where a common background with musicality and intelligence has been proposed. Here, we implicate genetic regions affecting music-related creative behaviour, which also include genes with neuropsychiatric associations. We also propose a common genetic background for music-related creative behaviour and musical abilities at chromosome 4.

But:

Heritability is the proportion of the phenotype variation explained by additive genetic factors. The heritability estimates ranged from 29% to 34% for composing, arranging, NCNA and other creativity (Table 1). The heritability estimate for improvising was only 11% and it was thus left out from the following genetic analyses. These estimates are lower than the heritabilities published in our previous study by Ukkola et al. [37]. Here, we used a larger sample and more focused phenotypes that should produce more reliable estimates of heritability.

Although there is probably a deterministic portion to the ways our brains work, this is just one of many studies that demonstrate the lack of very high correlation to various alleles. That is, for our characterological actions, development and life choices still play at least as large a roll.

Still, as is shown, and in many other studies, there is a heritability in regards to our musical ability.

Important in this study is that some of the genes studied are also of interest to those studying mental illness.

This brings once again to the fore that while our creativity is what makes us human, the very nature of the change to the organism (our brain) also makes us susceptible for what we call “mental illness”.

Among the elections on Tuesday was one for the infamous SBOE. Here are the results of the Republican Primary:

........... Bruner .. Ellis ..Herring

Who is this Bruner? One Mary Lou Bruner, a creationist, of course, and someone who thinks Obama was a gay prostitute:

Texas Board of Education Candidate: President Obama Was a Prostitute

That post has screen caps of her Facebook.

And according to the Bratfrats:

However, comments Bruner made on her Facebook page covering a smattering of topics from President Obama’s sexuality to the origins of the universe attracted unflattering media attention, including from the Texas Tribune. Bruner since removed the dicey remarks and told Breitbart Texas, “I don’t intend to apologize for my opinions because I still believe my statements were accurate.”

One post suggested that baby dinosaurs were on Noah’s Ark. She told Breitbart Texas, “As for my personal beliefs as to how the universe was formed, scientists have forced us to say creation is religion and evolution is science.” Despite Bruner’s beliefs, Texas public schools opt for the scientific approach and teach the theory of evolution.

That’s the Republicans in Texastan for you.

You have to read her own comment to her post, which for some reason is not digested by the hamsters here though I thought I gave the right URL…

To the television reporter who asked me while the camera was rolling if I REALLY believe there was a man named Noah who built an Ark and filled it with pairs of animals, and the entire world was covered with water: THE ANSWER IS STILL “YES, I believe the Holy Bible. I believe there was a Great Flood. How do YOU explain fossils of seashells and other sea animals on tops of mountains all over the world? How do you explain the Grand Canyon? You are very naive if you believe a tiny river carved out the Grand Canyon. I believe it took a lot more water than that to carve out the Grand Canyon and other land and rock formations formed by water erosion. You can call me ignorant or intolerant or whatever you want, but I did not make fun of YOUR religion.

A regular announcement on Armed Forces Radio in Germany reminds Americans that although their cars have the muscle under the hood to travel at high speeds on the Autobahn, most American cars do not have the steering or suspension to drive safely at speeds of 100mph or more.

Once upon a time in the low Countries I was travelling with my family and another. We had to have our van back to Charles DeGaulle airport by 1045pm, Naturaly the GPS the rental car gave us coked out but we had all to to get back from Amsterdam. Wife has the map but soon I realize I’m watching A Bridge Too Far. Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and when I saaw a sign for Arnhem I knew we were going the wrong way. Anyway I put my foot on the floor and didn’t take it off until we got near the airport with minutes to spare. At times we got up to 180 km/hr (about 112 mph) but remained consistently over 160 the rest of the way. Fortunately they don’t seem to have state troopers in Belgium and France.

I’m just as fascinated by unskewing-the-poll types on the left as well as the right. I also remember 2010, hoping that the polls weren’t really indicating the beating we were about to get. Then we got it. That’s why, while I hope Clinton wins, I’m not emotionally invested in her winning. I’m not emotionally invested in a Democrat winning the White House. I am, on the other hand, realistic about the need that a Republican be kept as far away from the White House as possible and that we need to do whatever it takes to get the Senate back.

The GOP is waking up this morning to the increasing realization that Trump is going to be their nominee. Cruz won 3 states last night, but barely budged in closing the gap on Trump.

Rubio did even worse. He was promising a bunch of wins, and went 1 for 11. He’s toast, but he promises to continue running. Apparently Kasich pissed off the establishment who thinks that Kasich siphoned off votes that would have otherwise gone to Rubio.

Except there’s no reason to think that Trump would have capitalized on that too.

Trump’s showing strength across all demographics and all regions of the country. Cruz held on to his home state (had he lost there, he was done on the spot). Rubio faces an uphill battle in FL, where he’s behind Trump in his home state.

In coming days we’re going to see a whole lot of 5 stages of Trumpism with the GOP - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. We’re seeing some of those all happening in the span of a week - as with Christie going from vocal opponent to prominent supporter in the span of less than a week.

Hillary has more than 50% of the delegates needed for the nomination. Bernie has a 1/3 of the number.

The argument tends to focus on the fact that the superdelegates could switch at any time so they technically shouldn’t be counted. But, even ignoring the superdelegates, she’s done far better than was originally projected. Not only did she do better than expected in places like South Carolina and Georgia, she won Massachusetts.

This election is bigger than Democrat vs. Republican. It’s about the working class, who work increasingly longer hours and make increasingly less, and the donor class. Trump represents the working class, and Hillary represents the donor class. Does anybody really think Hillary will do anything for the working class after she’s received millions from Wall Street? We’ve seen her record as First Lady, as Senator, as Secretary of State. She is a liar (remember we she claimed to be under sniper fire in Bosnia), and tried to cover up the mess in Benghazi. She panders to her biggest donors, which includes Wall Street. And she is grossly incompetent for the presidency.

I hope my fellow Democrats will wake from the Hillary shill and realize that Trump (assuming he wins the nomination, which he will), is the most qualified candidate for president.

Have they responded to that their new Congressional hero, Representative Gabbard had an anti LGBT record in the Hawaii state legislature? They love to attack Clinton for having supported DOMA and DADT while her husband was president but Gabbard was anti-civil union in the 2000’s. I won’t attack Gabbard too hard on that point since entering Congress she has co-sponsored much pro-LGBT legislation but what I’m getting at is don’t throw stones when the stones just as easily could be thrown on you which is why I think Clinton’s Hispanic surrogates did push back on immigration.

Trump, whose casinos went bankrupt 4 times.

Trump, whose airline shut down after losing money.

Same for the magazines, liquor, and steaks.

Anything outside real estate or branding his name as a premium (namely TV), and he fails.

He’s on the record as saying that wages are too high in the US to compete worldwide.

He’s avoided working with union labor as much as possible - so as to maximize his personal profits once again.

American workers wouldn’t benefit from a Trump presidency. Trump and the other GOP contenders all would benefit the richest of the rich through tax and social policies that shift the burdens from the rich on to everyone else.

Anything outside real estate or branding his name as a premium (namely TV), and he fails.

We have all read that if he had simply invested his inheritance in a stock market fund, he would be worth twice what he is today.

But neither would he have the notoriety to run a successful bid for President at almost no personal expense.

And you could have said it about Teddy Roosevelt as well, or even FDR to an extent. Anyhow here’s how I look at Bernie versus Hillary. I think he has to his credit got her thinking a little more to the left than if just O’Malley had ran though I think O’Malley who I voted for BTW could have pushed her to the left on some issues too than she would have. However, I think where Bernie’s failed is not so much in ideology itself though I think he is a tad unrealistic sometimes and I do wish he would realize that there are a lot of issues at play and not just economic inequalities. I think where Bernie failed is convincing people outside of white young Progressives that he’s presidential material. Maybe that’s harsh but a President takes on many roles. I’ll be happy to have Bernie remain in the Senate especially if we get a majority and he can start drafting some legislation that can pass and get signed. And finally I hate to sound dismissive but a 74 year old man isn’t the best face for a revolution and honestly I think they needed to do a much better job of reaching other demographics and they failed big time tehre.

Super Tuesday? Some winning candidates over the years spoke to and tried to inspire the more positive things in our national makeup. The essential problem with Trump is his play is relentlessly negative and angry. Thuggish. For me that is more threatening than almost any other issue. Trump is most likely to inspire violence. Everything else pales.

Despite the outcomes yesterday, there’s still bad news for Democrats. While Democrats are doing exceptionally well with minorities (blacks, Latinos, etc.,) there’s one demographic that the Democrats aren’t - non-college whites:

That’s a not insurmountable problem, but it is a problem. Democrats can win without that group, but this is a group that is likely to vote in droves, especially for the likes of a demagogue like Trump who panders to them with asinine claptrap about how he’s going to do X and Y without ever actually saying how in a way that makes sense.

These are among the demographics that have not seen their economic outcomes improve despite the end of the recession, and are among those who think that minorities have taken all their benefits/resources. Trying to combat those lies/smears (which the GOP has cultivated for years) will take lots of work (deprogramming) but it has to be done.

And it has to be a sustained effort.

He’s tapped into the demographic that doesn’t think too well, is confounded at how lousy their lives are, and wants it all to change right now.

If you think Hillary hasn’t locked up the nomination, you’re playing with skewed polls and GOP math.

Hillary has more than 50% of the delegates needed for the nomination. Bernie has a 1/3 of the number.

Bernie won a couple of states last night, but the deck is stacked against him. He’s the last one to realize his campaign is all but over.

In answer to your comment and some comments Sergey had made upthread…It has been reported that Bernie received 40+ million in contributions in February alone. I’m thinking he isn’t going to be going away any time soon. He probably thinks he can buy commercials in the hard-hit rust belt Midwest states where his economic populism will take him to victory and he can close up on Hillary.

For Bernie, he’s raised $96.3 million. He’s spent $81.6 million, leaving him with $14.7 million on hand. He has next to no PAC money being spent on his behalf.

The GOP is engaging in class warfare too - they just disguise it as tax cuts for the rich and cutting the safety net programs for everyone else. That includes attempts to repeal Obamacare, slash food stamps, EITC, welfare, and even unemployment assistance.

The sum total of the GOP policy is to shift the burdens (tax and social) from the rich on to everyone else. The rich are those who benefit from the GOP policies, and everyone else is stuck with the bill (literally and figuratively).

The tax policies simply are fantasy - tax cuts for the rich do not stimulate the economy and only accelerate the divide between the rich and everyone else. At the same time, the tax cuts, whether it’s income tax cuts or demands to cut the estate tax, only benefits the wealthy while expanding the debt and deficits (whether at the state level or nationally).

There is no external enemy that is going to rebuild the middle class.

You pay for government by paying taxes. It’s a requirement.

It’s not about treating the rich as the enemy. It’s about requiring the rich, who can afford to pay more, to be proper citizens in this country. If you’re not busting your butt the way most middle class and poorer people do, you can pay a little bit more.

And the rich that I consider the enemy are those that prey on the fears of the middle class in order to stay rich.

The class war on the 1% is figurative. The war on the poor is literal. I know young people who are going to die much younger than necessary because of TPGOP ratfucking of ACA.

So…just like your main man Marco. Except Marco has no experience because he has never actually done his jobs while running for the next.

I guess once again for a Republican, trying to work all those years on healthcare also falls under no definitive views.

Yeah Marco wants to be the establishment man so bad but unlike the Clintons he doesn’t want to have to work for it. Say what you will about Bill and Hillary, they did work hard to get to where they were. I haven’t seen a damn thing from Rubio that indicates he takes his job seriously.

I disagree, class warfare will get us nowhere. Better to unite against an external enemy who can be beaten and humiliated with disrupting things internally.

Reform is needed, and simple tax cuts won’t do it, but treating rich people as “the enemy” is the way to ruin.

Ok, because you’re going to ask why I downdinged you: Your argument is that instead of the 1%, we should just make up an “external enemy” to beat and humiliate. That is ridiculous, immoral, and self-defeating.

You can argue that we have more important enemies that we should unify against, or that the rich are not the enemy at all, but what you wrote was appalling.

The thing is. The right and DF’s Republican Party have been engaging in class warfare Whether it’s Reagan attacking poor people on welfare (not even discussing that he used racially charged language which is another argument) to Mitt Romney just four years ago insisting that people vote Democratic because they’er “victims” and want “free stuff”, the Republican Party and right wing wages class war all the time. IT is the tax cut for the wealthy that results in a cut in education for your state’s poorest schools. It is the belittling of people who want a better wage. So yeah there is class warfare in American politics. Only it’s been done at the less well off and front and center has been the right doing it.

Damn Dark, you really do have the GOP bad.

It is not about treating them as the enemy, it is about them treating everyone else as the enemy after their already fat piggy banks. It is called fair tax and it has always made this country great. It is what made the country after the war debt, it made the infrastructure and it made for a strong military. And the rich were still damn rich.

When we had a great external enemy to combat, the rich were paying a 90% upper marginal tax rate.

And an effective tax rate of about 30% after they figured out how to dodge them. Seriously, that is pretty much where historically the effective rate ends up settling out regardless of top marginal rates. My theory is we should look at what the effective rates have been historically, pin that as the tax rate and get rid of all deductions, credits, incentives, trusts, loopholes etc.

Last night’s post-primary shindig was interesting. Lots of head shaking over Trump doing so well, a whole lot of relief that at least Ted Cruz denied him Texas, and sadness that Rubio wasn’t more competitive nationwide. And I got one of my co-workers to admit that if it came down to Trump vs. Hillary, she could be persuaded to pull the lever for Hillary because Trump would be objectively worse as POTUS.

It’s going to be a weird ride to the Republican National Convention.

And fight tooth and nail against things like wage increases, living wages, healthcare, etc. Those who can afford a heart transplant out of pocket change should not have input into whether others should have access to doctors other than by going to the ER.

Kind of. Bernie unlike Clinton was winning younger voters and unlike Clinton was very much the outside bet. However, she like Obama did in 2008 have a broad coalition. White progressives need to realize they share a party with African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians(though they haven’t been a big demo yet), more moderate voters, and other people. Honestly I was shocked to see how well Clinton did here in Virginia since Obama won here pretty big in 2008.

Kentucky, where our state legislature spends so much time finding solutions to non-existent problems:

Christmas Counterattack: Rep. Will Coursey, D-Symsonia, filed HB 565 which would give any business owner immunity from civil liability for exhibiting a Christmas display and the bill also makes it unlawful for an employer to fire an employee for saying “Merry Christmas.”

And also pretty much defying SCOTUS:

Marriage Amendment: Rep. Joe Fischer, R-Ft. Thomas, filed HB 571, which is a proposed constitutional amendment that would add this sentence to the Constitution of Kentucky: “Only a matrimony between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a matrimony in Kentucky.” Fisher also filed HB 572 which is a 454-page bill “to redefine and establish the legal parameters of the civil institution of marriage.”

historymatters.gmu.edu
Interestingly enough this comes from my alma mater’s history department where I did my studies. It’s interesting you’re doing this. I have a short story that has to be 10 pages for my creative writing class and i’m thinking about doing it from a British soldier’s perspective in one day during the Somme. This is what I got so far:

“I starred across No Man’s Land. I imagined my German counterpart; he too stuck in a pointless war that appears to have no end. When this war started two summers ago, I hated him, I too fell in with the fervor that we all did. I happily took my oath to serve the king and empire. I was not lucky to be alive. No, the lucky ones were the dead who fell that first summer. The ones, who died believing that their cause was and still believing in god, king, and empire, they were the lucky ones not me and those of us who had survived. I used to believe. I was an altar boy and my earliest memory is of father weeping as he told me that the queen had died. I only remember Father crying once and that was one day he did. She, like so many was all that so many of us including even my grandparents had ever known and then she was gone.
Before that stupid Serb shot the Archduke and ignited this forsaken war, I was in university. I was going to be a barrister like my father before me. But when I heard that we had declared war on the Germans, I left school and immediately enlisted. I figured the empire had given me so much and the least I could do is volunteer for her in her hour of need. And here we are two years later with no end in sight. Thousands already dead and the same maimed. The old men sending us to die never faced a war like this. They never faced weapons that could mow down an entire company of men within minutes.
This morning is peaceful. I don’t know what today’s date is. I’ve lost track but the sweltering heat told me it was July. Summer in France, it’d be actually be romantic if these weren’t fields of death. “Hey Joe”, I hear, I turn around and it’s Frankie. Frankie and I get on quite well. He’s a coal miner’s kid from Wales but we’ve been through this together so it gives a bond that transcends whatever class differences we had before the war. “Say Joe, you don’t happen to got a fag do you?” “As a matter fact I do.” “Thanks mate.” Cigarettes, it was funny, I remember the smell of father’s cigars and I hated that smell but cigarettes are a lifesaver out here. I think it’s because the taste makes me think about something other than that I’m going to be firing a rifle into another man. I wondered about my German counterparts across the line. I wondered what they thought of this war. I remember hearing about Marx at university and thinking it all a bunch of rubbish but the more this war progresses the more I think the crazy German may have had a point about how class systems ruin countries. “You’re quiet this morning, Joe. Something troubling you?” “Dunno Frank, I keep on thinking about the Germans.” “Yeah what of them?” “I don’t think they’re too different from us.” “How do you mean?” ” I mean the average German bloke can’t be that different from you or me, only he’s German. I mean I don’t care about their officers but the average German has to be sick of this bloody war as we are.” “You think too bloody much”, he said with a laugh.
I guess he was right. “Wonder when we’ll get leave?”, I asked eager to make the conversation about something we could look forward to. Leave was always something we could look forward to. I have liked the French girls we’ve met in the villages. They flirt, kiss, and seem to appreciate us being there. And of course leave also meant better meals and alcohol. Oh alcohol, to drink good wine with a cute French girl and get your mind off of battle. The whole thing amused me thinking about the French. Grandfather told me when I was a boy about how his grandfather had fought against Napoleon. But here I am in a part of France that no one can find on a map. There is no Louvre nor Notre Dame here but endless fields. Frankie and I finish our cigarettes and go back in the dugout.
The modern trench is one of mankind’s worst inventions. It stinks, rats are everywhere, men live in cramped quarters, and disease is rampant. If you’re not getting sick from a rat, a comrade is happy to give you his ailment. But still we must fight on the officers say. “

Does the KY constitution still attach disqualification to a politician who fights a duel?

Not if Zell Miller has anything to say about it.

It is an an issue to them that Christianity is no longer the default semi-official religion of the USofA.

That is the real issue yes.

Anyone know where I can find some accounts of life/death in WWI field hospitals? I’m working on a new story and need some reference points - I’m amazed how little I know of WWI beyond “Archduke Ferdinand was shot and the world burned.”

Hemmingway. A Farewell to Arms comes to mind immediately.

A Farewell to Arms?

Farewell to Arms though is a great idea though. I thought you were looking for first hand accounts.

I should have remembered that one.

re: #581 HappyWarrior

Beautiful, thank you.

The entire story isn’t about WWI, but it plays an important part - as will other times in history, but this was the scene I thought of first and wanted to get some meat on the bones.

I’d prefer first hand accounts, but I do need reference points beyond “trenches, no man’s land, and France.”

Oh I see. Interesting stuff. Good luck. It does sound like a powerful opening scene.

Oh the trench, no man’s land, and France is my work. Just wanted to share it. This could be interesting though. I used some of these first hand accounts when I took a German history class to show how the idealism of 1914 had become cynicism by 1916. As you can see, it’s influenced my creative writing.

They are not wishing you a Merry Christmas, they are trying to shove an agenda in your face. That is not the spirit of Christmas.

The folks who wish you a Merry Christmas with an agenda are unlikely to actually be at Mass on the evening of the 24th of December (Christ Mass). Several of the original “Founding Fathers” Protestant sects the modern Evengelicals claim to trace their descent from frowned on any sort of a celebration on those days as it reeked of Papism and other works of the Devil.

At the risk of sounding partial, try a nursing angle. There are probably some vivid accounts of WW1 hospital conditions from the nurses of the day.
