UPDATE: Trump Campaign Says, “What? White Supremacist? Press Pass? Inconceivable!”

And now, the spin
Politics • Views: 47,908

The Donald Trump campaign has responded to the story Little Green Footballs broke yesterday about white supremacist James Edwards, who was given media credentials to attend Trump’s rallies. And of course, they’re claiming they had no idea who Edwards is, they condemn his views, and they don’t vet people who get press credentials.

Which seems a little odd, since they definitely do withhold press credentials from members of the media Donald doesn’t like.

Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for Trump, told POLITICO in an email that Trump’s son and the campaign had no knowledge of Edwards’ views “and strongly condemns them.”

“The campaign provided media credentials to everyone that requested access to the event on Saturday in Memphis. There were close to 200 reporters in attendance and we do not personally vet each individual,” Hicks said. “The campaign had no knowledge of his personal views and strongly condemns them.”

The campaign also said Trump’s son did not participate in an interview with James Edwards as Edwards stated on his hate site.

“Donald Trump Jr. was not in attendance and although he served as a surrogate for his father on several radio programs over the past week, to his knowledge and that of the campaign, did not participate in an interview with this individual,” she continued.

Except, uh, he actually did.

Donald Trump’s oldest son gave a 20-minute interview last Tuesday to a panel that included a radio host who once wrote that slavery is the “greatest thing” that ever happened to African-Americans.

James Edwards — who is host of a radio show called “Political Cesspool” that has hosted leaders of the Ku Klux Klan, Holocaust deniers and neo-Nazis — was on a Super Tuesday episode of “The Liberty Roundtable” where he, along with host Sam Bushman and an additional co-host, interviewed Donald Trump Jr. In a blog post Edwards said he would air the interview on his own show March 5.

Oops. Well, now the scion of the Trump empire is spinning like an Iranian centrifuge.

“This is clearly the mainstream media trying to turn a story into nothing — much like they did with my father, who I witnessed denouncing David Duke and any KKK endorsement on multiple occasions,” the younger Trump says.

He just sort of “ended up” speaking with the white supremacist somehow. Could happen to anyone.

Says he called 35 different stations to tout his father’s GOP presidential campaign, and one host asked him to speak with another host, who ended up being Edwards.

“Had I known? I would have obviously never done an interview with him,” Trump Jr. says.

Right.

On another note, Politico gets this part wrong:

The news of the interview with Trump’s oldest son was first reported by New York Magazine…

Nope, it was first reported right here at LGF, and New York Magazine’s Eric Levitz has graciously added a credit to us in the latest version of his article.

UPDATE at 3/2/16 4:24:49 pm by Charles Johnson

By the way, this is not our first run-in with James Edwards and his hate site: webcache.googleusercontent.com

Well, if Charles Johnson and the Tinfoil Yarmulke Brigade are denouncing something or someone for “white supremacy”, odds are it’s worth reading. Johnson and his ilk think wanting grandkids that look like you, and guiding your children’s dating habits to bring that about, is “white supremacy” and only a “Nazi” would care about his kids engaging in interracial dating. In other words, he’s a complete nut job.

UPDATE at 3/2/16 4:54:57 pm by Charles Johnson

About that “we don’t vet the media” statement from the Trump campaign, Wonkette owner Rebecca Schoenkopf relates what happened when they tried to get credentials for a Trump event:

Of course, nobody should really be shocked by Trump having… dalliances… with racists since, you know, he went birther years ago.

What a tangled web

the campaign defended itself by saying it provided press passes to everyone who asked.

But TheWrap has learned that that wasn’t true for an African-American newspaper.

“We sent out two email requests,” Karanaja Ajanaku, executive editor of The New Tri-State Defender, told TheWrap. “The first email was sent on the Monday before the event, but we never heard back. The second email was sent on Thursday. They never even acknowledged our emails.”

Thing is…this is all the denial that’s required.

Invoke “mainstream media”—ride the back of the behemoth trope that US conservatives have nurtured for decades…that anybody contradicting or criticizing them is in the bag, or stirring up drama.

So…again…Trump’s trumpery is a direct continuation of what was already there.

“This is clearly the mainstream media trying to turn a story into something, much like they did with my father, who I witnessed denouncing David Duke and any KKK endorsement on multiple occasions,” Trump Jr. said.

He provided Bloomberg with a copy of his schedule, which does not list the interview with Edwards in it.

“I didn’t even know I was on with anyone other than Sam as it was radio and I only was scheduled with Sam per the call sheet,” Trump Jr. said. “I certainly had no idea of James’ background, and if I had I would have refused.”

“The way the media is spinning it is as though I voluntarily spoke with this guy and I knew his background, rather than I was essentially duped by him being in the room and asking an inane question where I clearly could not have ever known what or whom I was talking to. It’s very unfair, and typical of the way much of the media has handled us,” Trump Jr. said.

Seeing how helpless this makes the GOP establishment fat cats in the face of a hostile takeover by a rogue fat cat (i.e. Trump) is deeply satisfying.

From Balloon Juice: Progressives begin shifting focus from supporting Bernie Sanders to beating Donald Trump

Even as Clinton was sweeping to victory in delegate-rich states Tuesday, building an advantage Sanders is increasingly unlikely to reverse, some progressive groups began to realign their messages.

moveon.org, which has formally endorsed Sanders, spent as much of its statement on Tuesday’s primaries warning about the threat posed by Trump as it did praising the potency of Sanders’ message.

“If Trump is the Republican standard-bearer, it will be crucial for progressives, and all Americans, to unite to defeat a man who represents the antithesis of everything our nation stands for,” said MoveOn’s executive director, Ilya Sheyman.

Rather sounds like many are seeing the writing on the wall, that Bernie would need a Hail Mary by this point in order to win the nomination, and so it’s better to lay off the presumptive nominee rather than continuing to savage her and thus weaken the party come November.

Bernie should stay in in order to keep Hillary “honest” and prevent her from tacking to the center too soon. But he and his supporters need to lay off the personal attacks and drop this “Give us the transcripts” bullshit, not carry it to the convention and then to November out of spite.

138
HappyWarrior  Mar 2, 2016 • 6:31:55pm

I really think and I don’t care it it makes me sound like a sell out but too much of Bernie’s agenda is about going from A to Z without stopping at B through Y first. It’s not that I don’t want a tuition system like Germany has, it’s that I realize we can’t go from having tuition more expensive than ever to having it at 0 just like that. Work on reducing existing tuition rates. The same could be said about a number of his proposed policies honestly.

Re: chocolate, I have a portfolio of solutions, all involving Hershey’s Dark cocoa powder and splenda (or the artificial sweetener of your choice):

1. Mix a spoonful of powder with hot water, a dash of cream, and splenda, for a cup of hot cocoa
2. Mix a lot of powder with warmed cream cheese and a lot of splenda, for something like a pudding
3. Eat a small handful of almonds dipped directly in loose cocoa powder with a bit of splenda and cinnamon mixed in (this is to combat my hangup on crunchy chocolate)

I’ve also eaten baker’s chocolate raw in small squares. It’s weird, but your brain gets so discombobulated by the taste that it stops asking you for junk food ever again. :D

Bernie article from 2013, where he argues that the Democrats need to focus on winning the South by appealing to working class whites. How?

While he reserved his harshest criticisms for Republicans, a party of “extremists,” Sanders didn’t apologize for the Democrats. In his reading, the Democrats have become more and more reliant on corporate money and correspondingly have prioritized social issues at the expense of a progressive economic agenda. It’s not that Sanders disagrees with most Democrats on social issues—he’s been pro-choice for the entirety of his more than 30-year political career and proudly points out that Vermont was the first state in the nation to allow civil unions for same-sex couples.

But he argued that the rightward drift of the party on matters of income and wealth distribution along with its declining defense of social welfare programs has left working class voters deeply disillusioned and with nowhere to go.

“By and large, it would be hard to say that most Americans believe the Democratic Party is the party of working Americans,” Sanders told the crowd in Birmingham. “Both political parties are heavily influenced by big money and I think that people are in trouble and they don’t see anybody speaking up for them and the answer is they don’t vote or they vote on some tangential issues.”

But if candidates for office can put an egalitarian economic agenda front and center, Sanders is convinced they have a future in the South. They just might also get his blessing and some financial assistance.

I guess we can call that idea a wash.

What Bernie doesn’t get is that white working class voters were leaving the Democratic Party when it was economically as he would like it. McGovern and Mondale got creamed by Nixon and Reagan with the white working class and overall. And honestly, again this shows one of my faults with him. He just doesn’t appreciate the importance of social liberalism to what makes liberalism work.

I found the reason for the Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone, uh unhappiness.

From Jezebel

From the very beginning, many have been, let’s say, skeptical, about the casting of Zoe Saldana, a light skinned black woman of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, as the dark-skinned Nina Simone. In the film, Zoe Saldana wears a wig far from her natural hair texture, a prosthetic nose and most jarringly, dark brown makeup. For many, Saldana is effectively wearing blackface.

Sorry, I do not agree. You don’t make any community website better by just leaving.

I admire your stance as you do what is best for your site your way and are successful at it.

I also understand the need to be on Twitter and have a Facebook page and all that to help drive your business.

But as commentary debate, I sort of understand William too, but on a different level. He does not have a lot riding on Twitter. And he is free to easily make that choice. He can’t make that decision for you.

There is a bit of ‘take your business to the competition’ arrogance by some internet services/companies mixed in with the last of the freedom cowboys say-anything-you-want liberalism. Sorry if your feelings got slammed, but thems the breaks.

But overall, you do have to fight it if you want to change it. It is the new wild wild west. And overall, it is about business. But the fight can be from all sides. Enough Williams quitting and enough filing of complaints and pointing out issues with the service from you and it will change.

IF not, it will go away. Enough Williams leaving their service and there will be less reason for you to use it. There will be something else.

That is often how stuff comes to an end. I hope Twitter realizes it, but they really seem to struggle.

I wonder if he’s simply going to try and make a huge comeback on the 15th with the Florida primary and some of the other Winner-Take-All events? I would have to think that behind the scenes the GOP leadership would have offered him all kinds of assistance to try and take down Trump and Cruz.

If he does pull out, who do you think it’s going to benefit more, Trump or Cruz? I don’t have any kind of a guess for how his supporters would split out.

What have they got?

They’ve got a racist bully who has hijacked the entire party, and who is meeting resistance on every front - business, science, media, his own presumptive party, other world governments. Nobody wants to see him in the White House.

The only viable alternative at this point is an egotistical Dominionist who has garnered so much ill will in his time in the Senate, no one there will endorse him. Hell, the Supreme Court interns didn’t even want to be seen with him.

And the Donor’s choice is bailing on campaign appearances and appears to be readying to hang up his shoes, in the face of being abandoned by the propaganda arm of the party that was supposed to keep him viable until the convention.

If that’s not fatally screwed, it’s damned close.

Not close at all. And the districts are much changed since his days as a congressman. He had the district that ran from just out of downtown Columbus and straight north and northeast of that and took in may small communities about 30 miles out of the Columbus area as a quick explanation.

Boehner’s district ran north of Cincinnati and up along the western edge of Ohio probably about 1/3 the way up, two or so counties wide. Probably a good 90 miles or more from each other in distance.

As far as relationships, I think they were probably cohorts in congress. They would have had to have come across each other as their careers overlapped for many a year. I’ve never heard they had any differences, and the Republicans as we know are always strong together.

Wonder when Marco announces he’s not running for re-election since after all he’s bored with the Senate. I think that seat may well be one we could pick up if cards are played right. I’d love for Murphy to get it. I know it sounds silly but it would be great to have someone from my generation in the Senate. I think he’s a more stronger candidate than the bombastic Grayson too.

He already announced last April he didn’t have plans to run for reelection if his presidential run failed. FL law prevented him for running for both simultaneously

The answer I gave on the other thread was that I don’t recall any animosity, but Boehner, aside from being an asshole, always seemed to pretty gregarious, while Kasich has always been a sanctimonious dick, so I don’t imagine they were ever particularly friendly.

Charles? It’s too late for VB to do so but could you please make this a private comment?

My wife read it and it triggered her PTSD. Her ex was the same sort of murderous asshole as the man in the article. I’m sure other people would find it the same.

Oh okay, so he’s done. Wow just like that. Maybe he’ll run for governor in 2018 once Scott’s term ends but by then he’ll be very much forgotten I think.

Sorry I missed your answer. That does sound right. I think you’re right about Boehner. I think with a more rational GOP, Boehner while he woulldn’t have been a great Speaker could have been effective. I don’t think Obama has any ill will towards him at all. In fact, I sort of feel bad for Boehner a little.

Drink some beer. Not being snide. Beer and chocolate don’t mix tastewise. If I have a beer working, you could run a whole platter of chocolate treats past me and I’d ignore it.

Tic-tac’s or Altoids. Works almost as good as toothpaste for me — don’t want to mix anything else with overwhelming mint. (Lousy substitute for Thin Mints, mind you.)

AFIK, there have been no new Trump verbal outrages or public assaults today.

I need to weigh in on this BS. If that is what she actually said [that blacks are uniformed,] she’s not doing her hubby any favors, she’s souring us against him. I’ve always hated when those who aren’t black feel they’re qualified to tell us what we do/don’t know. How in the hell can they know this when they have little/no contact with us? We’re a lot smarter when it comes to politics than they know, and the proof is in the documented fact that we showed up in 2008 and 2012 to flex our political muscles and keep Obama in office, even though some of us had to wait hours to vote. Bernie or someone on his campaign staff needs to keep her off TV.

At this point, I would encourage the Hillary supporters to start breaking their hearts, and let them know that them getting the pretty pink pony will not happen.

And also shoot down the demonisation bullshit.

At this point, I would encourage Hillary to not say a word about Mrs. Sanders’ misstep, and encourage her supporters NOT to rub it in with the Berners. Talk a lot about the down-ticket races and let the disillusion/disappointment sink in without any added salt.

We need those votes.

We’re getting a March miracle - expecting four feet of snow over the weekend. I’ll stay home on the coast but then I have to go get in the rest of my patrol days.

When you’re done with that lovely storm, could you send the leftovers east to Colorado? We need some too.

By the way, the Guardian has also picked up the son of Trump interviewing w/ Political Cesspool story, and has nicely credited LGF for being 1st to post about it.

I think this bypasses MRA and goes straight into psycopathy.

Not-crazy people call it attempted murder.
