Nice tune.

In a way reminds me a little of Chris Isaak.

The latest Michigan poll shows Trump with his smallest lead since early February:

Poll: Trump holds 10-point lead in Michigan GOP primary

However, in Mississippi, Trump has an overwhelming lead (gee, I wonder why…):

The paradox of this race is election after election, the GOP establishment has basically made GOP voters fall in line. That’s another reason why it’s an uphill battle against Trump. As I’ve gotten at, I don’t feel bad for the GOP leadership at all. They’re the ones who created an environment where Trump could succeed and they chose Rubio, a subpar senator as their answer to him.

The choices are dwindling… now with Carson gone, I suspect that Cruz will be helped.

I think Trump’s support of Planned Parenthood probably hurts him more than his enthusiasm for torture.

Rather seems, like with most Clinton “scandals,” that the investigation is scrambling at this point for anything it can to justify the amount of time and energy put into it. Because I fail to see how this guy can shed any light on whether she was knowingly keeping classified documents on the server or using it to conduct quid pro quo transactions to foreign donors to the Clinton Foundation.

Possibly. But more likely, I think, is that he thought of JFK as something of a friend when they were younger, and felt betrayed when (in Nixon’s eyes) Kennedy fought dirty to win in 1960. And then there was the debacle of Nixon’s campaign for governor of California in 1962, which Kennedy and Earl Warren seemed to take a bit too much joy in. My guess is that Nixon decided in the early 60’s that he couldn’t trust anyone and that’s probably why things went sideways later.

I’ve mentioned before, I grew up in Yorba Linda, my high school was right around the corner from the presidential library (we got days off when it opened and for the funeral). So there’s always been sort of a weird fascination for me when it comes to Nixon. My senior year of high school, the AP government classes did a post test field trip to the library. It was interesting, mostly because this was before it was transferred to the National Archives, so the “Watergate Room” was a hallway specifically designed to get you to move through quickly and not read too much.

History would have been very different had Nixon won in 1960, I don’t know if it would have been better or worse, but very different.

I strongly suspect the immunity deal has to do with the judge’s order the other day for all of her aides to testify under oath about her server and whether the intent was to skirt open records laws. The party demanding the testimony? Judicial Watch.

Yes, the defense was very good. But the prosecution sucked. He’d have gotten off with a lesser “dream team”. I vividly remember Clark at the prelim (I think that’s what CA calls it) and the medical examiner was in the stand (Lee, I think, along with someone from the coroner’s office) and they handled it so very badly that *I* noticed. This was long before my five years with a defense attorney boyfriend).

I understand that technical testimony is dull (this was before CSI was a thing), but you can’t do that for days on end without making connections as to why you’re putting them to sleep…why it’s important and what it means. The prosecution never did that.

That’s me yesterday. Got up early in the morning to pick up my Explorer from the mechanic after dropping it off Monday only to be told there was nothing wrong with it and the sputtering couldn’t be reproduced. Got it home, no problems. Drove to work, no problems. Drove to the mall, no problems. Then driving back home, what had been sputtering turned into it dying on me just I get to the light. Managed to nurse it back to the mechanic, who says he’ll take it off my hands to look at. Called today to get an update…and they say their tech can’t reproduce the issue, there’s no error codes popping up, and there’s nothing visibly out of sorts. They have a working theory it might be the fuel pump, but the earliest I’ll know is tomorrow.

And this is roughly two weeks after dropping it off at the same shop for a whine that turned out to be a failing alternator, only for the bill to grow as they found a leak in the coolant system and brake fluid in need of replacement. That bill was just shy of $1800. Here’s hoping the next one will be less than half, or I’m going to have to go begging somebody to loan me the other half until my next paycheck.

Has it been sputtering more when you try to start after not having used it for a bit?

(I’m just asking because that was how the fuel pump made itself BEST known on mine when I had to have it fixed.)

When I did have my fuel pump replaced (on a Rav4 about 5 years ago now), it was about $600 and at least half of that was labor.

Yeah, it has. It sputtered out when the manager and I tried to take it for a test drive after I got to the shop, but then sat in the parking lot out of gear and revved up and down alright. Seems like there’s some sort of interruption in the fuel flow.

Mine was failing to maintain the pressure in the line, which was most noticeable when trying to start it up after it had sat for a few days. Frequently didn’t have nearly as much trouble when driving it every day.

This was all happening right around when my grandmother died, so I actually left the car with the mechanic while I went to the funeral and he was able to reproduce it after a few days, which is how I got it definitively diagnosed.

That’s the thing, it hesitated a couple times when I got it back after the alternator was replaced, but didn’t think much of it. It drove fine for two weeks, though after it sat for a few hours it was a bit harder to start. It only really acted up Sunday night, which is why I took it in Monday. And I drove it around fine on Monday, until it just acted up on the way home. No errors codes from the transmission (thank Dog), everything looks alright in the engine, and the fact that the tech could drive it around alright seems to suggest its not electrical or computer related. So something in the fuel system seems to be the likely culprit.

Mine seemed to be hit or miss too. The car shuddering when stopped at a light or something also stopped after I had the fuel pump work done, so…

The plus side was it wasn’t as stupidly expensive as some other things could have been, but yeah.

“I’ve interviewed him a number of times,” O’Reilly said of the Republican front-runner. “Not an easy interview. How would you do it?”

“You and I have talked about this general subject many times over the years. It’s irrelevant how I would do it,” Koppel replied. “You know who made it irrelevant? You did. You have changed the television landscape over the past 20 years — you took it from being objective and dull to subjective and entertaining. And in this current climate, it doesn’t matter what the interviewer asks him; Mr. Trump is gonna say whatever he wants to say, as outrageous as it may be.”

The real estate mogul’s audience, Koppel added, was not even a television audience, but one better suited for Twitter.

“They deal in messages of 140 characters or less, which keeps it nice and simple,” he explained.

O’Reilly did not respond to Koppel’s critique, and instead repeated the question.

I’m watching the latest. And have been reading the Dominick Dunne re-cap in Vanity Fair.

Gripping horrible story. Still.

At the beginning of it all, I had his son, Jason, as the killer and OJ covering stuff up for him. So much weirdness about the whole thing. I was a total Court TV junkie. Watched both of the Menendez trials start to finish. And a whole lot of others—the Maglite flashlite folks divorce trial, the nanny trial. Business was slow and I had all kinds of time on my hands.

It’s amazing how many of the early Court TV folks went on to have big news media careers—Cynthia McFadden, Greg Jarrett, Terry Moran, Catherine Crier, (of course, Nancy Grace), Savannah Guthrie, and others I can’t even remember right now.

That’s how I got my BMW wagon fixed last time. Left it with the mechanic and said, “Just drive it for a few days…you’ll understand.” He did, and two days later called to say, “What the fuck?” Turns out it was two bad coils. He replaced them and the car was all luvvy duvvy.

Gas tank leak and the pump can’t always hold pressure?

Sounds possible. Another symptom is that whenever it gets below a quarter of a tank, the needle starts dipping around and doesn’t give an accurate reading. When I mentioned that over the phone and asked if it might be a sign, the mech came back in the affirmative. So, hopefully I’ll get a call early tomorrow telling me that it’s the pump and they can have it back to me before end of day. Even if it’s $600, just having a car that works will be worth it.

re: #68 Targetpractice

I had that exact thing happen. After weeks of taking it in, their never finding anything, having the service manager call me a dumb girl (resulting in a call to Pontiac with me completely losing my shit on the customer service person), Pontiac towed it to a different dealer where they discovered the radiator line got damaged and radiator fluid got into the transmission creating transmission fluid that was more like pudding. They finally fixed it (new transmission, radiator, lines, the whole shebang).

I traded it in for a Mercury the next week. M

Years before that I had a similar instance where the fuel line in the gas tank kept getting clogged. I must have gotten gas from the bottom of a fuel tank that had debris. When the fuel would suck down it would sputter. Then it would float again and work for a while.

I have a love/hate relationship with cars. I so love cars when they work but fear the unexplainable. I’m uber particular about what I buy now. I’ve had nothing like that for 15 years now. Thank god.

Good luck!

Fuel pump check valve, or replace fuel filter (some filters have internal check valve), or insufficient fuel pump output volume (gotta have pressure *&* volume).

(failure to maintain proper fuel feed line pressure)

Have you checked to see if there is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for this issue. Google is also a good source for diagnosing vehicle fuel system issues.

As you work your way up the “wonder if this will fix it” tree, remember OCCAM’s razor and always consider the least expensive repair as the first option.

My last enigma with my car, I let the boy do a tune up right before a holiday weekend. I started it to go around the block, but it barely started and immediately gasped out. Could not figure out why it wouldn’t start. Turns out the timing belt broke exactly at the time I started it up. Lucky me because it was an interference engine and if it was actually running would have ruined the car.

I second the fuel filter issue. A clogged or dirty filter can restrict your fuel flow, like Klys has experienced.

Replacing a fuel filter in a fuel injected car is not a lot of fun, *especially* if the filter and pump are inside the fuel tank. I curse the auto engineers who came up with that idea. First of all, all the fuel lines are pressurized, even when the car has been idle a day or two. So, if you’re lucky enough to have a filter inline and outside the tank, you can get sprayed with gasoline if you undo a fuel line. No fun. But, replacing this kind of filter is do-able for the home mechanic.

If the pump and filter are inside the tank, you have to de-pressurize the system, drain the tank, carefully drop the tank (no sparks allowed!!), wait for the fumes to dissipate from the tank, then proceed to finally replace filter and/or pump. This is a job for a professional mechanic, and the lengthy process is why labor costs are so high.

Also, it could be bad gas, or water in the tank if the problem occurs when the tank is below 1/4 full. You can try a bottle of gas treatment to see if it makes any difference when the tank is low.

re: #73 Targetpractice

If you are out cruising around and it starts cutting out again, pull over somewhere safe, leave the engine running, get out and pop the gas cap. If there’s a rush of air into the tank then the valve that allows air into the tank (as the level drops) is blocked or stuck. This can overwork the fuel pump, causing it to prematurely wear out (or work less efficiently).

We have a friend with a son who had this problem that I helped solve. I had him drive over (about 20 miles) and it was cutting out on him as he pulled in the drive way. I quickly popped the cap and heard a huge WHOOSH as air rushed in. The engine quickly smoothed out afterward but testing showed that his fuel pump was about 10 PSI low so I also recommended we replace that. I replaced the roll-over/vent valve and fuel pump, solving the problem for him.

It can be a bit of a pain because it takes time for the vacuum to build up in the tank, thus the dealership often never drives it long enough to reproduce the problem.

We cannot avoid doing what we think is right and best for the country based on how the GOP will react. There is really no way to avoid the GOP reaction/insanity anyway. Remember, even proposing right wing proposals still yields a NO! from the right.

So Mitt Romney is trying to get a little shine from the chaos in the GOP.

Trump has already sent out the disparaging tweets.

I don’t know what Romney thinks he can accomplish outside of getting another 15 minutes of fame. I’m pretty sure the short little message sent out from Huntsman a couple of weeks ago about possibly supporting Trump had nothing really to do with Huntsman liking Trump, but rather to throw dust in Romney’s face.

What a sad turn of events for our “democracy”, when billionaire Mormons throw around meaningless support/unsupport for a reality TV star… just for sport.

Yesterday morning, while teaching class, I reviewed with my students the results of what happened on Super Tuesday. Lots of good discussion, and then one student asked something to the effect of:”…so when do you know it is really getting weird in the Republican primary?” I said- When Mitt Romney makes some big announcement about Trump and possibly threatens to get in the race. Little did we know that soon after class, we would hear about Romney making an announcement. Now the kids think I’m some kind of soothsayer(I’m going to let it ride for a while).

When I was in 7th or 8th grade history class, my teacher then, an ex-military guy with a flat top buzz cut, told us that Brazil would be an important economic power by the time we were adults. This was around 1969, and IIRC Brazil was classified as a Third World country back then. At the time, I thought nothing of his prediction. Then, years later when Brazil became one of the BRICS, I remembered what he said and realized my teacher was a pretty smart guy.

But I bet he could not have imagined what China has done. In ‘69, China was as fucked up as North Korea is now, and almost as isolated.

re: #150 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

Byrd sort of did:

In it, Byrd says he viewed the Klan as a useful platform from which to launch his political career. He described it essentially as a fraternal group of elites — doctors, lawyers, clergy, judges and other “upstanding people” who at no time engaged in or preached violence against blacks, Jews or Catholics, who historically were targets of the Klan.

His latest account is consistent with others he has offered over the years that tend to minimize his direct involvement with the Klan and explain it as a youthful indiscretion. “My only explanation for the entire episode is that I was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision — a jejune and immature outlook — seeing only what I wanted to see because I thought the Klan could provide an outlet for my talents and ambitions,” Byrd wrote.

While Byrd provides the most detailed description of his early involvement with the Klan, conceding that he reflected “the fears and prejudices I had heard throughout my boyhood,” the account is not complete. He does not acknowledge the full length of time he spent as a Klan organizer and advocate. Nor does he make any mention of a particularly incendiary letter he wrote in 1945 complaining about efforts to integrate the military.[…]

Byrd’s book offers a truncated description of his days with the Klan that does not completely square with contemporaneous newspaper accounts and letters that show he was involved with the Klan throughout much of the 1940s, and not merely for two or three years.

I’m just guessing here, because who can fathom the minds of Chinese party officials, but Nixon’s acceptance of China as a world power may have enabled Deng XiaoPing to break with Maoist tradition and modernize China’s economy a few years later (the “Great Opening Up”). Deng made the economy more capitalistic and said it was honorable to become rich.

Deng is like Nixon, in some ways. Both men are simultaneously admired and despised in their own countries. Though he’s regarded as the father of China’s economic success, Deng is also (secretly) despised for his role in the 1989 Tian’anmen Square Massacre, for ordering or condoning lethal military action against students and civilians. One of my Chinese friends here says Deng’s portrait will never appear on Chinese currency for that reason.

Thanks. It’s very hard to get a read on what people really think about Tian’anmen. Even if I could ask them, my young Chinese students don’t really know anything. I haven’t heard about “minders” outside China, but I am not surprised. Since Xi took office, there’s been increased party supervision of university professors in Chinese universities, and it’s widely understood among all teachers that at least one student in each class is a “minder,” reporting to Party officials. The Public Security Bureau police are also minding foreigners, particularly ones with an obvious religious bent.

Xi’s daughter attends an American university (Harvard, maybe), but at the same time he encourages mistrust of Western values, and blames “outside influences” for any dissent or “non-harmonious” behavior in China. Sounds very familiar, y’know?

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I’m sure we’re going to hear a lot about how Romney is going to put the stake in Trump’s campaign and end it.

If you believe that, there’s a bridge in Brooklyn I can sell you.

Let’s put this bluntly. The GOP hates Hillary with a white hot passion. That hate will transcend any hesitations they have over Trump mostly because the issue that the GOP establishment has with Trump is over style, not substance.

So all these people saying that they wont vote for Trump are lying - mostly to themselves, especially when you put them in a head-to-head race.

If you care about making sure Democrats win the WH in November, let alone the down-ticket ballots, you better make sure you get out and vote for those candidates. They aren’t going to win all by themselves. And Democrats have to sustain this in every election thereafter - failing to vote in midterms and off year elections inures benefits to the GOP that are completely undeserved.

That’s true, to some extent, based on what I’ve read. The PLA had to enter Beijing from outside, and in some places were stopped by civilians blockading the roads. These were not pitched battles, because they were one-sided, but the units couldn’t enter the capital until the roads were cleared.

Tank Man was one of those obstructions, although he stopped a unit in Beijing’s suburbs, IIRC.

Most Chinese, including PLA members, were aghast that the government would order the army to shoot at unarmed civilians, but that’s just what happened. Some soldiers refused and were punished, or escaped to live as fugitives. Most complied, and suffered the great guilt afterward.

My reasons are more personal and subjective: as soon as she is nominated, the GOP are going to start impeachment proceedings against her, and it is going to get really ugly, misogynistic and unpleasant, even more so than under Obama.

My answer is “BRING IT.” Misogyny will not be dealt with as long as we’re unwilling to confront it. It’s just like racism. The left needs to be as up front and aggressive about their support of women and minorities as the right is against it.

Trump’s the hugest friend of Israel. Greatest friend the country ever had, except he’s never actually completed any projects there.

So why does this matter? He’s managed to complete multiple projects elsewhere in the Middle East, often with as complex issues as any in Israel. He’s even managed to offend Muslims who are involved in his projects (as he did when he called for a total ban on Muslims entering the US - including Muslim-Americans). Project names were changed to minimize his involvement, but those projects continue to go ahead or are open.

The projects in Israel just didn’t get that kind of attention or interest by Trump. That includes proposed skyscraper projects and golf courses. In one instance, there was a proposal to build something and the property identified, but when it came time for the land to be auctioned, there were no bidders - Trump passed on it.

Some friend.

Let’s not forget that Romney courted Trump’s endorsement, and made that announcement at one of Trump’s hotels.

So why did Romney do that? Politics. He needed the votes and considered the endorsement to gain support of Trump’s fans/sycophants/backers.

So why is Romney turning on Trump now? Same thing. Politics.

The beast that the GOP created is now feasting on the party establishment because they haven’t been sufficiently open and hostile in their extremism, and Trump’s offering them a way forward. Romney will find that he’s just as ineffective in dealing with Trump as every other GOPer so far.

Trump is immune to criticism. He will point to the Romney endorsement he made 4 years ago and paint this as an attempt to thwart the voters will. He’ll say it’s the media pushing this and that he will be the nominee.

And Democrats who have been warning of the hate-right for years will say that they’ve been right all along. The proof is that the GOP is now Trump’s party.

The Party of Lincoln, let alone the party of TR or Ike is dead. Heck, even the Party of Reagan is toast. The hate-right built that.

Donald Trump on Thursday flirted with launching an independent bid if it he does not lock up the Republican presidential nomination after turning out “millions” of voters.

“The establishment - they want to throw that right out the window. Because if I get out, all those people are going, they’re all going with me,” Trump said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.’

Pressed about whether he was still willing to run as an independent, Trump said, “Well, look. Do I want to? No. I’m leading by a lot [among] Republicans.”

“But they’re spending now $100 million on negative, phony ads on Trump University,” Trump said.

Pushed again on potentially launching a third-party bid if Republicans do not unite behind him, Trump referred to the letter he signed with the Republican National Committee last year pledging to support the GOP.

“I signed a letter with the RNC and I said I want to do this as a Republican,” Trump said. “But I’m not being treated the right way, I’m not being treated properly.”

“Whether I ran as an independent or not, those people will never go out and vote … they didn’t vote for Romney last time,” Trump said.

Trump’s the hugest friend of Israel. Greatest friend the country ever had, except he’s never actually completed any projects there.

[Embedded content]

I don’t think that Trump will win the general, but it’s a real possibility. Anyone who says it could never happen needs only to look at what happened with Sylvio Berlusconi in Italy.

The frightening thing in a general election run though is that Trump will easily argue that he can work with Democrats because he’s a ‘deal maker.’ And it will be believable because the Democrats have a long history of folding like a lawn chair rather than obstructing the President (respect for the offices they hold and all that shit). And that will convince swing voters. Hillary can’t say she’ll get the GOP to work with her with a straight face because nobody believes that’s possible.

I would be concerned that a major terrorist attack would really give him a bump, as would any other sort of natural/man-made disaster that disrupted basic services and law enforcement over a wide area, calling for a state of emergency or martial law: that would get hordes of angry, suspicious and well-armed “militias” out there shooting first and asking questions later.

Trump warns GOP: “If I get out” my supporters are going with me

A lot of his supporters are people who feel disenfranchised and alienated from the political process. If they feel that they have been “cheated” out of their choice of candidate at a brokered convention, they will indeed abandon the GOP, and certainly not in favor of the Democrats…

The GOP is in a bind of their own creation. They promised that they’d support whoever was the nominee. Trump is the presumptive nominee. He’s holding the GOP’s feet to the fire over this, and is explicitly threatening the GOP leadership over failing to hold up their end of the bargain by trotting out the last GOP nominee to undermine the current frontrunner.

Trump is right - if he gets forced out, he’s taking at least 1/3 of the GOP voters with him. If that happens, the GOP ceases to be a national party, but they’ll still be working at the local and state level to destroy the safety net, undermine the fiscal stability of the states and federal government, etc.

The Modern GOP in action.

Every GOPer and conservative is busy taking aim at each other over the rise of the Trump wing of the GOP (which is to say - the GOP itself). It’s glorious in its shadenfreude.

There’s a whole lot of denial and avoidance of the fact that the GOP brought this all on themselves by pandering to the extremists, hate mongers, and pushing nothing but anger and frustration as policy. Trump is the logical conclusion of all of it, and he sells it better than the rest.

So, the GOP’s problem is one of style over substance.

ObserverArt  Mar 3, 2016 • 7:10:13am

Morning!

You know, just reading the comments here this morning I get the feeling this is going to be one of those days in the politics world.

Also, I don’t think it is so easy to say things will go exactly the same with Hillary in office as they did with Barack. We have no way of knowing that. They are two very different people that find themselves in two very different situations.

My reasoning.

1. People are getting increasingly sick of all the Washington blockage. 9% congressional approval proves that. I think that is going to bring pressure on the GOP more now than it did even as little as 8 years ago. It will benefit Hillary and even Bernie.

2. Hillary is a woman. Sure people could bulk about working with a Black guy in office and say they don’t trust him. Racism is still around and it gave cover to the messing with Obama. It is also a numbers thing, as Blacks didn’t have the numbers to make the GOP pay for their crap. Over half our population are women. Big difference. Women are way more concerned about doing things right and they may not be as inclined to be party aware. Numbers favor Hillary. If she can sway the women of America there is a power source their that is unavailable to a man. Think Bernie, Barack.

3. I really do think Obama was a bit too concerned to really attack the GOP. Could that be because he feared the “angry Black man” that would make it even harder for him to work with anyone and he didn’t want that to ever be seen or used? Also, he is just not the attack kind of guy. His attacking was through deft politics and reason.

4. Hillary has been through all the negatives for so long that it really doesn’t matter to her. I think she thrives on it. In other words…”bring it on assholes…I can deal” I think she knows what she faces and yet she is still in the game and looking forward to it.

It is my opinion Hillary brings a totally different political game than Obama. She will not be fearful or hesitant to use the bully pulpit. In fact I count on it. I think she is hard to fluster and that is one of the things I am a bit concerned about Bernie. He has yet to ever be attacked like he would be attacked. Can he handle it? I think Hillary can.

So, America sick of politics, lots of women interested, Hillary is a tough ol’ gal…and a political landscape at the lowest point in many a year. I think that sets up for a way for Clinton to get some stuff done. I really do believe she would be more effective at making (not getting) the GOP to work with her. Those GOP guys all have mothers, female friends, wives and daughters. Many of them had no Black people to answer to, sad to say. Same for RWNJs. conservative journalists, etc. There will be women asking why they are attacking a woman like that? That is unique to anyone in American politics so far.

Just my opinion. And no, I don’t hate Bernie. I just wished he was younger because I think someone like him would make a great President as the third Dem in a row. That would be after Hillary takes the Republicans on and is not afraid to call them out and be very clear about it to the American public. That is something I wish Obama had done more. But, I understand while he may have not been able to.

I’m putting on the hazmat suit and a helmet. I’m ready for the sleaze of the day. I think it is coming. And then there is a debate tonight. Ugh. That is going to be ugly.

So to work now…lurking throughout the day and ready for the Lizard view on the debates. Later! And sorry for the long comment! Just felt the need to vent. I feel better now.

And the other thing. If the government were truly worried about classified communications by the SoS, they wouldn’t let them send emails. You can’t make communications over the Internet completely secure because there are so many points of failure, such as the displays of the two ends.

re: #249 Tigger2

Well it seems like until it was Hillary it was a pretty common practice.

It’s my understanding that the law/rules were changed during the Obama Administration to preserve documents/records for the future. That meant that private computer setups had to either be eliminated or conform to the federal rules. Note too that Hillary’s setup straddled the period when the old rule and new rules applied.

What’s unusual is that she didn’t use the state.gov email address at all, while others used both private email and the .gov addresses. That, by itself, doesn’t mean she did anything wrong.

In Clinton’s defense, we should note that it was only after Clinton left the State Department, that the National Archives issued a recommendation that government employees should avoid conducting official business on personal emails (though they noted there might be extenuating circumstances such as an emergency that require it). Additionally, in 2014, President Barack Obama signed changes to the Federal Records Act that explicitly said federal officials can only use personal email addresses if they also copy or send the emails to their official account.

Add to that the whole idea that some information could be considered classified after the fact, or that information is considered classified depending on how gathered, even if it is common knowledge (to preserve the source - like the NRO, SIGINT, HUMINT). So, it’s entirely possible that a piece of information that was reported in the NYT can be subsumed into a classified document because it’s backed up by some piece of data from a classified source after the fact.

Lotsa things Americans want…

And when it comes to “precedent” or “tradition”, the only thing I can seem to make out is that it usually takes 3-4 months to select and nominate a new justice.

Obama is in office for the next 10 months…

I saw it pointed out that 1/3 of presidents have made a Supreme Court pick in an election year. Hell when Scalia died, I even found out that Adams made an appointment after he had lost and that was an ugly election. And Marshall did got in. FDR got to appoint Murphy even though the Senate perhaps rightfully was wary of him after the court packing scheme two years prior. There is no principles in the GOP’s blocking the nominee only they’re afraid of an Obama nominee who will reverse a lot of the damage their laws have done and precedent set up under Scalia. Tough shit for them. When Marshall resigned, H.W Bush was free to choose someone closer to what he wanted.

Yes. My mom’s family lived there. My great grandmother was even stranded pregnant with my great aunt/godmother in the flood of 1936. Found out that my paternal grandmother’s great aunt survived the first flood from a cousin. Still need to read that but it’s an interesting story. I work for the fed gov and I access my gov email from home although it is from the gov servers. But I assume the private server works differently.

That’s easy. Under US classification laws, there are times when you can put two unclassified things together and the composite becomes classified.

Yep. We lost a liberty port visit because a couple of wives were overheard talking about one of them flying out to meet her husband. The date she was leaving and destination wasn’t classified nor was the windbreaker with the ships name on it classified. But the two taken together was enough to compromise the boats movement. The adage about loosed lips sinking ships is still true today.

He said he’d vote for the nominee which looks very well to be Trump. How is that not fair? He shouldn’t have vowed to vote for the nominee if he didn’t want that to be used against him. It’s not the Dems fault that McCain is a party man through and through and underestimated Trump.

And if he did not so vow he’d have been pilloried as a RINO and the media would have gladly fanned those flames as would have the Dems.

It’s to be expected, though. Unfair attacks are part of the game and I only don’t like them when the Dems use ‘em. Which is partisan of me, which is why I’m coming clean and just admitting my feelings are based on party loyalty.

Unfortunately, while the writing is of course good, the pictures in the book (again from 1968) are not very clear. And it’s a bit hard to visualize everything that’s being described. I’m not far from Johnstown so I think I’ll do a drive up there when the weather gets nicer. There’s a museum or memorial of some kind about the flood.

You know when John Warner refused to endorse Oliver North for Senate in 1994, he still managed to survive in 1996. I will concede the Senate and Presidency are two different things. I just take issue with you calling this not fair when the man’s own words are that he’d support the nominee. He probably didn’t foresee Trump getting this far which I concede none of us did but it’s perfectly fair but I am glad that you admit that you’re just saying this based on party loyalty. By the way your party’s officials need to stop being afraid of being called RINOs and actually lead. Yet, historically, few if any of the former British colonies turned on their British residents once they achieved independence. Mugabe has made life for the whites in Zimbabwe difficult, but Mugabe has made life for everyone in Zim difficult.

I need to learn more about Mugabe. God he’s gotta be nearly 90 by now.

I think they really are afraid that they’ll get treated with the same bigotry they’ve treated other people with for years. They have this fantasy of racial minority payback squads.

Heinlein wrote about this and failed miserably with Farnham’s Freehold

Charles Stross has rhetorically asked whether “anyone (has) a kind word to say for (…) Farnham’s Freehold”, and then described it as the result of “a privileged white male from California, a notoriously exclusionary state, trying to understand American racism in the pre-Martin Luther King era. And getting it wrong for facepalm values of wrong, so wrong he wasn’t even on the right map … but at least he wasn’t ignoring it.”

So a high school friend is posting this meme that insists every single Senate Democrat voted to cut veterans’ pensions. That sounds very wrong unless there’s a catch and an increase in veterans’ pensions was linked to something prosperous like a ACA repeal. No real desire to engage this guy. It just sucks that a fairly smart guy doesn’t get that the Republican party could care less about veterans like himself and he’s too blinded by his hatred of Democrats and liberals to see it.

Yeah he’s pretty scary. I need to learn more about African history. One of the many courses I’d like to have taken but could never quite fit into my BA. I did take two classes on China which has proven quite helpful in understanding China I think better than the average American when China gets discussed. I took Latin-American history as well. and Middle Eastern. In short a lot of the non-European history I took were in places that we’ve gotten a lot of immigrants from and important regions. Well every region is important obviously but you knwo what I mean.

re: #137 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

I really wish there was another candidate. Although as far as available candidates go, she is clearly the best choice.

My reasons are more personal and subjective: as soon as she is nominated, the GOP are going to start impeachment proceedings against her, and it is going to get really ugly, misogynistic and unpleasant, even more so than under Obama.

This really makes me sad. Why does HRC have unfavorables? Because the GOP has spent everything destroying both Bill and her. This is GOP led bullshit that is repeated ad nauseum everywhere republican from Fox to every right wing blog and radio outlet.

What exactly has she done that makes her unfavorable? That she was an attorney for corporate America? That she tried to do something for healthcare in the 90s? That she stole all the W’s from the White House computers when Bill left office?

I am not saying she’s perfect in any way - no candidate is. But damn, she spent time trying to do what she felt was right while she was in public office. I am not sure exactly what more a public servant is supposed to do.

So, if one really wants to be disgusted by humanity and the uselessness of the dog and pony show I’ve been avoiding, read: Foliage.

It’s the authors first book and I really think she needed a better editor. The non-fiction parts seems spot-on and is just about more than I never needed to know about global finance and black money.

It’s a quicker and easier read than the non-fiction tome: The Outlaw Bank. I’m a little ways into this one. It’s very well written. The whole affair is nearly impossible to describe, so the information is dense and difficult to hold in the memory. I think the authors have done a difficult job very well.

Well, it’s already affecting the dynamic on the Court as per yesterday’s oral arguments on the TX HB2 TRAP law. The tag team of Sotomayor, Kagan, and the Notorious RBG completely dismantled Roberts’ attempts to limit discussion and in effect protect the TX legal team from being dismembered by facts.

Had Scalia been in the room, I doubt the dismembering would have been so thorough or complete.

Rulings likewise will be affected.

Roberts knows the court’s being politicized by the GOP, but there’s little he can say or do (even if he should). The Court is ultimately at the mercy of the GOP’s obstructionism and Roberts isn’t likely to come out and openly state that the obstructionism has no place in the nomination and confirmation process because he wants to be remembered as nonpartisan, and knows the GOP would take any statement on the obstructionism as taking sides - against the GOP.

He’s between the rock and hard place.

I’m not far from Johnstown so I think I’ll do a drive up there when the weather gets nicer. There’s a museum or memorial of some kind about the flood.

The museum is quite well done. It help put all the individual events that lead up to the flood in context. And, the pictures are, impressive.

Well, it takes some doing to fail that often and still be wealthy.

Not genius mind, just a total lack of ethics.

It also helps to start out with a lot of money. When you’re worth $100m to start, you can lose $100,000 and it not be the end of the world. When you’re worth $65,000, losing $100,000 you’re effed in a major way.

Cruz, Rubio, and Trump actually have a lot of overlap on fiscal policy (in particular, how taxes are recofigured) and immigration, and strike the same bellicose stance on foreign policy.

The idea that Trump is unserious about policy and the other remaining candidates are serious is utter tosh.

This is a panic move. It’s also got the worst optic alignment possible: Romney is twice-condemned as an outspoken patrician of the moneyed class Trump has set himself against, and as the candidate too weak/not conservative enough to beat Obama.

It’s also weak because it has to go to well of “stop Hillary” to give itself weight.

What I meant by cutting on Trump was the bit about Mittens saying watch Trump come out and attack him (Mitt). You are right about all the other stuff, but only a GOP pol could frame that bit about Trump attacking and have it have some impact. That to me made it a good ‘cut’ because in a way it forces Trump’s hand. Anything Trump does now is going to hurt him and the GOP. Actually everything that happens today is going to hurt the GOP. They have a war on now. And it is all in their ranks.

If you guys haven’t been following the news on Robert Morrow, the new Republican Party chairman of Travis County, TX has gone completely off the cliff since his victory on Tuesday.

Sorry about the shortened Gawker link, but there’s language in it that might not make it past the filters. Additonally, be forewarned that some of the images in the story could pass for NSFW.

The Newest Texas GOP County Chairman Is Completely F*cking Insane

Robert Morrow is the newest Republican Party chair of Travis County, the Texas territory that contains the state capital, Austin. He appears to be an absolute lunatic.

I don’t mean “Donald Trump” crazy, or “Rand Paul” crazy. Between his tweets, public statements, and website, he is “I’m wearing pants made out of snakes, I am Son of God” crazy.

If you want to witness his unfiltered insanity, hop over to his Twitter feed. This thing is so absolutely unhinged that I originally thought it was a hacked/spoofed account with the level of crazy hatred being posted, but it is ALL Morrow.
This is not only NSFW, it’s not safe for lunch, or brain cells for that matter.

The weirder the better. China Mieville wierd.

Sci-Fi is my favorite genre —David Brin, Vernor Vinge, Connie Willis and the classics.

Nothing that insults my intelligence.

Opiates don’t work for me, so it’s just a matter of being able to sit in a position in which I can actually read —or listen —depending on the format.

tanks

I haven’t read as much science fiction as I should, for someone who’s spent as much time at SF cons as I have. Also don’t mind things that insult my intelligence if they appeal to my sense of humor. Did you ever read The Witches of Karres? That was one of my favorites back in the day. I was an Andre Norton fan; also liked Diana Wynn Jones on the fantasy side. In steampunk graphic novels, there’s the Girl Genius series from Phil and Kaja Foglio — that gets plenty weird.

My confess my current taste is running to historical/cozy style mysteries and Regency romance. Wandering back through Agatha Christie and Georgette Heyer to admire the skill and the ambiance.

My reasons are more personal and subjective: as soon as she is nominated, the GOP are going to start impeachment proceedings against her, and it is going to get really ugly, misogynistic and unpleasant, even more so than under Obama.

So do you think it was a bad choice for Obama to run? His presidency has certainly been an ugly shit show by the republicans and most of the media.

Thing is, it’s not Hillary’s fault that her opposition is fucking crazy with hatred. Her opposition is crazy with hatred whether she’s the candidate or not. Who could the dems run that would win even Chuck Fucking Todd’s favor.

Whether Trumpenstein gets 1,237 delegates and the GOP convention is a glittery Trump Entertainment production, or especially if he doesn’t get to 1,237 and its a WWE Battle Royal for the nomination, this Summer’s GOP convention will be must-see television. I bet it gets the highest ratings of any TV show this year short of the Super Bowl.

re: #487 Belafon

Theoretically, the path would be through pointing that Trump’s occasional populist outbursts are kind of liberal, while the starched “conservative fiscal policy” of his Republican detractors is entirely elitist.

But the problem is, the Democratic Party, and liberals in general, really don’t have an angle from which to work with the kind of anger that Trump supporters are throwing around. “Populism” doesn’t really have a valence, and the populism pushing Trump is fundamentally about white anger. Awhile back I put up a long post about how systemic racism ultimately screws most white folks via bait-and-switch: what Dr. King referred to as “eating Jim Crow.”

Trump supporters are now angry at “elites,” but they haven’t questioned a whole series of faulty premises about why they deserve things and various other groups that are also citizens don’t. Indeed, via the conspiracy-style thinking present in Tea Party and the Alex Jones crowd, they’ve done the exact opposite of question this premise: they’ve re-confirmed that everybody is out to get them.

re: #486 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

Like I said, my reasons are subjective and personal. And I am sure it will get even uglier than with Obama. Would really rather see somebody else running, but if she is the only realistic and reasonable choice, she will get my vote.

I understand you have concerns. I think everyone does about all politicians.

I however do not understand how is could get any crazier with Hillary than Obama and you can be sure about it. We have already reached the bottom.

The dam that is in our politics has to break some time. If it doesn’t, it will not matter who the Dem candidate is. Heck, right now it doesn’t appear it won’t matter who the Republican candidate is. We are that screwed up politically.

Nomination contests are confusing to Chuck.

Life is confusing to Chuck. I really do not understand how he got his job and then promoted to where he is now. I guess it’s just another sign of how screwed up our media really is. They must be fine with a toad like Todd.
